Official newsletter of Christ’s Ardent Disciples in Action (CADA) © 2001-2005 Vol. 5 Issue 3 page 2 Characteristics of a people. One of the characteristics of a people is that they have a certain way of life, similar to a culture i.e. a Christian culture that honors the Lord. He chose us and He is calling us to not be assimilated by the world around us. We are called to be one, as Jesus and the Father are one. This is our ideal. It is God’s plan to join His people to Him and we are called to be a part of it. We are CADA. Christ’s Ardent Disciples in Action. Disciples taking action in both simple and great ways. In community, we can live this life with others who are similarly minded. We are different from the world around us. If Christians are called weird, then let us celebrate our weirdness. We are called to preserve and support our personal relationships and to make the best use of it. We are called to live our Christian life ecumenically through the Holy Spirit. Our commitment involves our whole lives. It is not a relationship based on attraction or convenience. It is about our brotherhood and sisterhood for better and for worse. It is loving and caring for one another. We are committed to each other’s commitments. We are committed to a Christian way of life. It is a serious commitment. It is a promise to give our word to each other and to commit to our word. Let us do it together. (Contributed by Jon Azucena)

MISSION AND VISION - WAY OF LIFE TALK SERIES

Speakers: Renz Tejada and Chris Simon “To become a community which would foster spiritual and personal growth as a Christian, and would cultivate relationships among members as committed brothers and sisters in Christ.” A vision can be thought of as our goal. Our mission is what we do to get to our goal. This is in alignment to God’s plan for us to experience love, peace, joy and unity with God. However, God’s plan was disrupted by sin. God wants to restore the original plan. Jesus came to save us so we can be reconciled to God. To recall the story of the processional caterpillar, without a vision, we would follow another caterpillar until we die -or- we could have a vision that will nourish us, sustain us and give meaning, hope, and value to our life. It is important for us to

know our vision, so all of us can work together. As Christians, our vision is to be Christ-like. Hence all of our activities are aligned toward being like Christ. To become a community… common, unity, togetherness, put Christ as the center of the community, all of us united in purpose striving to be Christ-like. This also entails a certain way of living, involving our brothers and sisters in the community (sharing in life’s messages). It does not mean that we have to behave exactly the same way or have to live together. We are different from a social group in this way because our ultimate goal is to go together to the kingdom of God. Our goal also aims to enrich our life with the Lord, by reading scripture and Christian books, by participating in our church traditions, and serving in ministry to further the kingdom of God. Cultivating committed relationships with others involves a covenant, a contract, a bond. This entails that we align our life to that commitment. There are 2 types of commitment, a vertical commitment to Christ and a horizontal one to others. This vertical and horizontal commitment is rooted in the 2 greatest commandments stated in Mark 12: 29-31: “Love the Lord with all our heart, and with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength. And the second is this, love your neighbor as yourself.” Foster spiritual and personal growth… Serve the Lord; learn about Him and His will for us. Serve others by praying together with them, encouraging others to continue to strive to be Christ-like in our work, in our action and in our speech. Our mission is to bring one another closer to Jesus Christ – that we all may have a personal relationship with Him and that we may all have a life that is being lived in the Holy Spirit. Personal Relationship with Him. Having a personal relationship with someone entails a time investment. It may take all that you have. It takes effort. At some point, there will be communication and understanding. As a result of this communication and understanding, some of has have experienced a conversion of heart – from being sinners to being a new creation. This conversion can be manifested in faithfulness to daily prayer. In addition, we want to place importance on scripture reading, as it is part of our response to God’s own love letter in the Bible, to God’s words. Let us spend time in studying and meditating on the words of the Lord. We also encourage attending our church services regularly. We can also performing works of charity or service. In short, people can see Christ in us. To Love God is to love others. This is responding to Christ’s command to love others as He has loved us. Our service can take many forms: time, talents, and treasure. One good way of evangelizing is to live a life in the Holy Spirit, not a life of the flesh. (Contributed by Jon Azucena)

Welcome to the CADA Sportsfest 2005! First event of the day, an event seemed like straight from ʺAmazing Raceʺ, finding the sportsfest location using an outdated map and direction. ʺ Oh no, not another event!ʺ one would say, having already played a deluge of games all throughout the summer. Thus with some participants already stressed out even before the start of the games, the variety of foods waiting in the breakfast table prepared by Ellen Obsum was a welcome treat. For Bro. Jun Siwa, who had gone as far as Orchard Lake Road, the breakfast food was eaten at lunchtime. Brother Jun, you are ʺLostʺ and a ʺSurvivorʺ rolled into one! With the only glitch of having provided the participants with somewhat confusing directions to our new sportsfest venue at Gilbert Willis Park in Wixom Township, this yearʹs sportsfest was a resounding success and the most highly attended ever. The park, with its rolling hills, basketball court, three tennis courts, a childrenʹs playground and a rural area setting which provided a little bit of exclusivity, provided a perfect venue for this yearʹs event . And so with some of the events already played even before the Sportsfest day, everyoneʹs momentum was running high with many participants sharing their excitement by eagerly tagging along their friends. With just the cheering competition and the ball games remaining to be played, everyone expected a heated but friendly competition. As early as June, the 6-day series of bowling competitions were played at Cloverlanes in Livonia and the Sunday tennis at Rotary Park in Livonia, both events drawing a number of participants and guests as well. Two events were added this year, scrabble and chess which were played in the homes of our

gracious hosts, the Cadelinas in Shelby Township and the Nicdaos in Canton. In keeping with this yearʹs CADAlympics theme ʺRace to Godʹs Graceʺ, the two teams appropriately came up with names bearing spiritual tones, The Crusaders & The Flaming Chariots. Voltaire Diaz and the couple tandem of Rolly and Rhabi Hernandez captained the Crusaders. Dave and Jing Demetria captained the Chariots on the other side. At the end of it all, the Crusaders doused the Chariotsʹ flames by winning the CADA Cup by just a margin of points. Earlier, the Crusaders won the womenʹs bowling event, tennis and chess while the Chariots won the menʹs bowling and the scrabble. And for sure, the sportsfest would not ever be complete without the cheering competition, which turned out to be the deciding event that gave the Crusaders the overall win. The day of the sportsfest was a bright sunny day, a big contrast to the past year when it was rained out causing the organizers to scramble to find an indoor venue to continue with the games. The day started with the usual parade, the traditional lighting of the torch by last yearʹs MVP, Portia Almendras and a short worship led by Voltaire Diaz. First game to be played was men’s basketball, followed by the womenʹs, both of which were won by the Crusaders. If you think the menʹs basketball was a tough competition, the womenʹs game with the usual running and foul violations ruled out, proved to be much tougher. I think one would be lucky enough to come out of the game free of bruises. The volleyball event was Chariots’ answer to their basketball loss when the team won both the men and womenʹs event. Some wacky games were originally planned to be played but with the change in the schedules and the sheer exhaustion of the participants, the organizers decided not to push through with the events. Even so, a lot of participants found time to fellowship with one another and play tennis till dark. Not to forget, the children’s ministry also did their part by conducting mini sportsfest events just to make sure that the kids have participation as well. The Whalers led by Pedrito Esteva won over the Tigers headed by Simoun delos Reyes. They were also able to raise some money for the various childcare activities by selling ice cream. The individual awards were handed out during the Friday prayer meeting that followed. MVP award went to Lorie Reyes and Rick Woloszyn, Most Brotherly went to Melchor Garcia and Most Sisterly award went to Tricia Alcasabas. As the sportsfest coordinator, I would like to thank Lawrence Tejada for providing the needed administrative support; Ellen Obsum for coordinating the team uniforms and the food preparation; and the game coordinators (Chris, Gigi, Ivy, JP) and Jun, Cliff and Rey for officiating the basketball and

HONORING ABYONG

During the September 16 prayer meeting, the brothers and sisters of CADA allotted ample time to honor Brother Abyong Calo as he concluded his three year formation program with the Servants of the Word and his service to CADA. He was honored for being a very gifted and humble man who has offered his life and talents for the advancement of God’s kingdom and the Christian way of life. He was also honored for his unique and effective ability to give talks and to speak God’s message. People also thanked Abyong for the many practical ways he served families through carpentry and electrical works. He was recognized as a good brother to the sisters and a very good friend and role model for the men in CADA. Brothers and sisters then prayed over Abyong after the honoring session. After which he was given an opportunity to thank the people in CADA including Stuart Ferguson, an elder in the Servants of the Word brotherhood, who was present during the prayer meeting. A late dinner at Shangrila restaurant after the prayer meeting was given in honor of Abyong. It was inspiring to witness how one man with many abilities and talents would abandon his life for the service of the Lord. Like the servant in the Parable of the Talents (Matt. 25:14-30) who was given many talents by the Master, Abyong has made good use of his gifts, which he enhanced, invested and multiplied for the service of the Master. Such that even now the Master, our Heavenly Father, is well pleased saying, “ Well done good and faithful servant Abyong”. (Contributed by Jun Siwa)

CELEBRATING 4 YEARS: ANOTHER MILESTONE FOR THE HOMEGROUP The married couples gathered at the St. John Center in Plymouth on the evening of September 30 to celebrate the anniversary of the formation of the CADA homegroups. The groups arose 4 years ago out of the need to provide the growing number of married CADA brothers and sisters support in their married and family life. The evening consisted of some time for prayer, presentations, an open forum discussion, fellowship, and cake. The main presenters were Joe and Mary Firn and their oldest daughter Janice who are all members of the Word of Life Community. Joe and Mary have been married for 26 years and have been members of the community for over 30 years. They shared about the value of Christian community and its way of life on their relationship as a married couple and on their role as parents. Janice who grew up in community shared about growing up in a community family. After their sharing they opened the floor to questions which the younger married couples took advantage of. All who were present were definitely enriched by the nuggets of practical wisdom, which was passed on. The evening continued with brief presentations over some cake by Jon Azucena on the history of the homegroup; by Chris Simon on how Rhoda and he came to serve as homegroup leaders; and by Pedro Esteva on the plans for the homegroups, which include group changes and teachings. A special guest that evening was Belen Paredes from the Ligaya ng Panginoon Community in Metro Manila. She was in town for the recently concluded international conference of “Consecrated virgins” – women who have chosen to live single for the Lord outside a religious order - held at the Work of Christ Community in East Lansing. One interesting bit of information, Ate Belen was Jing Demetria’s pastoral leader when she was single. (Any questions about the presentations should be directed to the respective homegroup leaders) (Contributed by Toni Esteva)

On the evening of August 12, the Servant of the Word brothers, namely Abyong, Marlon, Peter and Gello invited the CADA brothers for camping and fellowship at the Brotherhood center in Chelsea. Jon, Joshua and I were among the first to arrive at around 7:30PM. Joe came soon afterwards. As we were setting up the tent Chris, Carlo, Bobby, Don and Gener arrived. There were 13 of us all together. After we setup the tent, we ate dinner together. We roasted marshmallows and hotdogs on the campfire. The night livened up when Bobby started to play guitar and we sang different songs from the past, Filipino and English alike. The singing skills of the brothers were really put to the test. After the singing activity, we decide to play some group games, we called it psychiatry where people will change names and the psychiatrist would figure whoʹs who and what the pattern is. Joe, Gener and I were voted as the psychiatrist for the three games, the level of difficulty increased as the game progressed. Joe figured it out easily, Gener took sometime and I got the pattern but not the solution. It was already past midnight, and some suggested to go to sleep, but Bobby suggested that we have a sharing time. The sharing and honoring were really the highlights of the night, you can see what the brothers were experiencing in their walk of faith and hear how God was working in their lives. After that, we called it a night. The rain started to pour. Good thing we were in our tents, ready to sleep. In the morning, it was still raining, so we had our breakfast in the house. After breakfast we had our morning prayer together. The rain stopped so we were able to proceed with our outdoor activity. Brother Mike from the Servants of the Word guided us in our shooting activity. The brothers were all excited and bragged about who could hit the bull’s eye. We had fun. After that, some brothers went fishing, others played volleyball and still others just walked around the area. Finally, we ate lunch together and listened brother Stu from the Servants of the Word

share about how we could support one another and how to become good Christian men. Overall, it was a very good experience for all, it was kind of short but we decided that we would do it more often so that we could support one another. The Lord blessed us. We really felt it as the weather cooperated with our planned activity. This was intended to strengthen the CADA brothers and surely the Lord heard our prayers. ( Contributed by Renz Tejada )

REKINDLE YOUR PASSION FOR THE LORD

Return To Your ʺFirst Love!ʺ

by Marilyn Hickey

Have you ever wondered why some people donʹt have the same zeal for the things of the Lord that they did when they were first saved? They have become lax regarding the time they spend with Him and in His Word. Before my husband Wally and I were in the ministry, I knew a man who was just like the Apostle Paul. He was so ʺon fireʺ for the Lord that every time we saw him, his face would just glow with the love of God. Each time we had chance to fellowship with him, he would tell us about people heʹd witnessed to, and describe such beautiful revelations from God on how to witness. He had a real passion for Jesus. But as years went by, we lost touch; and later, I heard he had become cold and indifferent. He had compromised his faith. Jesus had become his pastime, not his passion. Some time later, this manʹs wife got turned on to the Word through our Bible school and got excited about the things of the Lord. She went home and built a fire under her husband again! Now heʹs turned around, ʺon fireʺ for the Lord, and is moving in the same kind of beautiful revelation knowledge that he once had. Godʹs Word turned him around and it can do the same for you if youʹve lost your first love! Has Your Spiritual ʺSizzleʺ Sputtered Out? When we are first born again, we fall in love with Jesus and He becomes the all-consuming passion in our lives. But sometimes we lose the passion for Him, and He becomes pastime rather than our passion. Oh, we love Him, but we slip into the ʺI-have-everythingʹʹ mentality: ʺI have two cars, a nice house, three bathrooms, Mastercard and Visa, and by the way, I have Jesus.ʺ Thatʹs the lukewarm attitude of a lukewarm Christian; and God hates lukewarmness. In Revelation 3:16, God says that He will spew lukewarm Christians out of His mouth! If you are experiencing any lukewarmness in your Christian life, God wants to turn that and give you back your first love. When we study Chapters 3 and 4 of the book of Revelation, we see that there are two Church Ages that exist at the same time. They are at the end of the ages, the time during which the Rapture will occur. That is the time weʹre living in right now. The Philadelphian Church Age is characterized by brotherly love. The Laodicean Church Age is characterized by lukewarmness. Only those who share the characteristics of the Philadelphia Church are going to be raptured; those who are lukewarm will be left behind. The lukewarm person views Christianity as his pastime, not his passion; he becomes a

Page 7: ULY EPTEMBER

JULY – SEPTEMBER 2005

Official newsletter of Christ’s Ardent Disciples in Action (CADA) © 2001-2005 Vol. 5 Issue 3 page 7 hypocrite. There is much more openness for a cold person to listen to the Lord than for a lukewarm person. The prodigal son was a cold person: but while he was cold, God spoke to him and got him back on track. His brother, on the other hand, was lukewarm and God had a harder time dealing with him. Is Your Passion for God--Hot...Lukewarm...or Cold? How can you identify a lukewarm Christian? Revelation 3:17 gives you a clue: ʺBecause thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou are wretched, and miserable, and poor; and blind, and naked.ʺ These are symptoms of the lukewarm Christian. He thinks he doesnʹt need anything. Yet God says that he is poor, blind, and naked. Fortunately, God has provided a solution! The Lord has provided a means for lukewarm Christians to become hot for the things of the Lord, because often they are so blinded that they donʹt know the way out. And God can turn you around to the place where you can say, ʺBecause I have Jesus, I am blessed beyond measure. Turn Up the Heat! The remedies for being poor, blind, and naked, found in Revelation 3:18, can restore us to the place God desires for us: ʺI counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.ʺ Godʹs solution, His counsel, is ʺgold tried in the fire.ʺThe true gold is Godʹs Word. Every born-again believer who has prayed a promise and has received an answer to prayer has experienced ʺgold tried in the fire.ʺ Every time you take hold of the Word of God, you know it has already been through the fire, so itʹs already gold. The cure for the lukewarm Christian is to take hold of the Word of God. Donʹt hold onto circumstances; those make you poor. The Word of God is what will make you rich. Now, some of you are going to say, ʺBut, Marilyn, when youʹre lukewarm, itʹs an effort to get into the Word.ʺ Youʹre right, it is an effort to read the Bible; but if you will do it anyway, it can bring you out of the lukewarm state and make you hot. Remember, when we are pressing toward the mark of the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus, we are pressing for a passion for Jesus, not a pastime. The more we press into Jesus, the more we want to study His Word. The better we know Him, the more we want to draw close to Him. Playing With Fire Only Gets You Burned Godʹs cure for ʺnakednessʺ is found in Revelation 3:18. We need white raiment ʺ...That you may be clothed; that the shame of your nakedness doesnʹt appear.ʺ Our raiment is the robe of righteousness. First John 3:7 says ʺ...Let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.ʺ You canʹt lead a ʺsecret lifeʺ or ʺdouble lifeʺ in which you go to

church on Sundays but practice sexual impurity the rest of the week. You may think nobody knows it, but God knows it! Thatʹs being lukewarm, and the lukewarm person misses a life of abundance, health, and harmony. God says to anoint your eyes with eye salve to cure any blindness. Lukewarm Christians really donʹt ʺseeʺ spiritually what God is doing. They come and do their little church thing. They read their Bibles some, but have lost their first love and are not really seeing people, circumstances, Godʹs plan, or the move of the Spirit as God sees them. But God says they donʹt have to be blind. They can have eye salve (the Word)--rubbed in their eyes to see their lifestyle the way God sees it. God knows how to change a lukewarm heart! God cares. Jesus says, ʺAs many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repentʺ (Revelation 3:19). I donʹt know about you, but sometimes I donʹt like people to correct me. Yet God says ʺBecause I love you, Iʹm here to correct you, to turn you around.ʺ God loves us enough to correct us. Burned Out or Fired Up? Jesus gives a wonderful promise to the Church in Revelation 3:20: ʺBehold I stand at the door and knock if any man hear my voice, and open the door I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.ʺ If you repent and take hold of His Word and His righteousness, then use the raiment and eye salve that He provides, you will see the way He sees and you will return to your first love. If you are born again, you are a part of the Church and cannot afford to be lukewarm. You cannot afford to say, ʺlʹm rich, Iʹm increased with goods.ʺ God says that kind of person is poor, naked, and blind but he doesnʹt have to stay like that. He needs to repent, turn from being lukewarm, and return to being zealous for God and jealous for the kingdom. Zealous means ʺred-hot, boiling over, just turned on.ʺ Furthermore, zealous and jealous have the same meanings in the Bible. Therefore, the church that is zealous for God is a church that is jealous for Godʹs work. And thatʹs the kind of church God wants. Are you a lukewarm Christian? Do you want to get right with God and make Him your passion instead of your pastime once again? Letʹs pray right now: ʺFather God, I want to return to You and make You my first love once again. I repent of my ʹl-have-everythingʹ mentality; and, instead, I turn to You as my provider. I choose to get into Your Word and to draw closer to You. Rekindle the fire under me so that I will once again be a person who puts You first in my life. I surrender my life to you, Lord. In Jesusʹ name, I pray. Amen.ʺ (Contributed by Renz Tejada )

Official newsletter of Christ’s Ardent Disciples in Action (CADA) © 2001-2005 Vol. 5 Issue 3 page 8 IN THE NAME OF JESUS The following is taken from the book “Intercession – A Guide to Effective Prayer” by Sr. Ann Sheilds, S.G.I. It tells us what it really means when we intercede for others and pray for ourselves. At the end we can find some Bible verses and guide questions that we can meditate on.

><> ><> ><> ><> ><>

Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in my name will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son; if you ask anything in my name, I will do it. – John 14:12-14 Jesus promises us: “If you ask anything in my name, I will do it” (John 14:14). Yet is the name of Jesus just a formula we can attach to the end of any prayer request we make? What does it really mean to pray “in the name of Jesus”? Consider what it usually means to make a request in someone else’s name. If I were to ask you for money in the name of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, for example, you would rightly expect your money to help Mother Teresa’s work. If I asked you to sign a petition in the name of the Right to Life movement, you would expect your signature to support the Right to Life movement. If I turned out I was actually taking your money or signature for my own purpose, you’d be justifiably angry. In the same way, if we are praying “in the name of Jesus”, our requests should have some connection with Jesus and his work. Which means I had better have some reason to think I am asking for something Jesus wants. So often when we pray, whether for ourselves or in intercession for others, our own ideas about what should be happening come rushing to the fore. We may think we are praying in Jesus’ name, but in fact we do not stop to ask whether our requests actually represent what Jesus would want. I believe this is one of the primary reasons why so many people end up feeling that God doesn’t answer their prayers. As the Letter of James says: “You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.” (James 4:3). Jesus’ promise – “If you ask anything in my name, I will do it” – is made in the context of another promise: “He who believes in me will also do the works that I do” (John 14:12). Jesus’ “works” have a very specific meaning in John’s Gospel: they testify to his unity with the Father. “For whatever he does, that the Son does likewise,” Jesus said. “These very works which I am doing, bear me witness that the Father has sent me” (John 5:19, 36). For us to do the works of Jesus means to do the work of his Father. It means bringing God’s power into the world to save men and women from sin and death. And it is when we are

doing the works of Jesus that we can trust that he will give us anything we ask. The following are Bible study designed to take a careful look at the works that Jesus does and how we are called to participate in them:

• John 14:8-11 – Jesus says that his works, meaning his miracles, show his unity with the Father. Look up the following Scriptures and compare Jesus’ miracles with the Old Testament reference to God’s action. What does each comparison show you about the work God wants to accomplish in our lives and in the world?

o Matthew 9:1-8 – Jesus forgives and heals Isaiah 38:16-17, Psalm 103:1-3 – The Father’s work

o Mark 8:1-9 – Jesus feeds the hungry Deuteronomy 8:2-3, Psalm 104:27-30 – The Father’s work

o John 9:1-7 – Jesus gives sight to the blind Isaiah 42:6-7, Psalm 146:8-10 – The Father’s work

o John 11:38-44 – Jesus raises the dead to life Ezekiel 37:12-14, Psalm 16:10-11 – The Father’s work

• John 14:12-15 – We have reflected on the works that Jesus did and does in unity with the Father. But Jesus also tells us that if we have faith in him, we will do these same works. What are practical ways you can share in these works?

• John 14:15 -17 – Jesus’ promise to give us anything we ask in his name applies especially to the gift of the Holy Spirit. John’s Gospel calls the Spirit the “Paraclete” – a Greek word that means defender, spokesman, teacher, or intercessor. Have you consciously asked Jesus for the gift of his Spirit? Can you recognize the presence of the Spirit, as Jesus said we would?

• John 14: 18-21 – Loving Jesus and being united with Jesus is closely connected with keeping his commandments. What is the connection between praying in the name of Jesus, obeying Jesus’ commandments and receiving answers to our prayers? Can you really pray in Jesus’ name if you are not obeying his commandments?

And lastly, the following are the author’s tips in interceding for specific people to help her focus on the work Jesus might want to do in their lives:

• Have they repented of sin? Are they striving to live according to God’s law?

• Do they know Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior?

• Have they surrendered their lives to the action of the Holy Spirit? (Contributed by Ivy Senger)

CADA COMMITMENT TALK

One week after the CADA Anniversary Celebration, Jon Azucena gave a talk on commitment to CADA’s way of life at St. John’s. He emphasized that it was a life centered on God and Jesus Christ. The good thing is that in a religious group, we can grow closer to God through prayer meetings (protected praise time), scripture readings/talks, and through guidance and support from other brothers and sisters. God takes time to mold us and being continuously faithful to CADA’s activities is a way to become mature Christians. He read the CADA commitment card, and asked us to seriously think about our dedication to the group.

STATEMENT OF COMMITMENT

In grateful response to the exceeding goodness of God, I want to give my

life fully to Him, to love Him and to serve Him.

I want to love Him in faithfulness to daily prayer

in Scripture reading, study and meditation in holiness, living righteously free from serious sin

I want to serve Him

by giving generously my time, talents and treasures by calling others to a full life in Christ by active participation in my church

I want to love and serve others

by living in right relationship with my family by loving my brothers and sisters in CADA

by faithfully participating in my cell group and other CADA meetings

by taking active concern for the poor and needy

These ideals, I set before me as an upward call. In the grace of God, may

I live them out together with my brothers and sisters in CADA. To God be

the glory forever. Amen Some definitions, synonyms of commitment

• a pledge to do • state of being bound emotionally or intellectually to a

course of action or to another person or persons • trait of sincere and steadfast fixity of purpose • promise - a verbal commitment by one person to

another agreeing to do (or not to do) something in the future

• consecration - a solemn commitment of your life or your time to some cherished purpose (to a service or a goal); ʺhis consecration to studyʺ

I want to love Him…

• Vertical Commitment to the Lord Why? It arises from our grateful response to the Lord’s goodness. It is our own decision to respond to the Lord.

In faithfulness to daily prayer

• To be like Christ, we need to learn about Christ. • Spending time with the Lord listening in prayer • Communicating with the Lord in prayer

In Scripture reading, study and meditation

• Learning more about the Lord through reading books, listening to talks

• Attending mass in our own parishes and serving in our own parishes

• Catechism • Scripture Reading

In holiness, living righteously free from serious sin

• Living a holy life, a “different” life from popular culture.

• We recognize sin and occasions of sin and avoid it: drunkenness, infidelity, swearing, love of money, pride, etc…

I want to love and serve others…

• Horizontal Commitment to the Community By living in right relationship with my family

• Our families are our first communities, it is important that we live in right relationships in our own families. We have roles as husbands, wives, children, brothers and sister, fathers and mothers

• For me as a father, husband – my mission is to make sure that my wife and children get to heaven. As a son and brother, I also want to

Page 10: ULY EPTEMBER

honor my mother and father and keep an eye out for my brothers and sister.

• If this is my mission, then I need to be equipped to be able to do it. o I needed to be 3 Ps and a G in the family. Can

anyone guess their meanings? Where do you think I learned it from?

Priest Protector Provider Governor

o There are some roles and responsibilities in my house.

I take care of the yard, garage and home repair and take on the primary role of provider.

I listen to my wife and care for her. Jen takes care of the finances, bills

and groceries and meals. Jen supports me and the decisions

we make by expressing her strong opinions on them.

Both of us instruct and discipline our kids.

Kids have to take care of their own toys and clothes.

They also have to obey and respect us.

We pray together as a family every night.

We go to church every Sunday.

Without these roles and activities in our commitment – there would be chaos in the house. There would not be any order. The environment probably would not be a place I want to be in.

And when I meet my Creator, what will I say to Him? I will be accountable for my wife, and the children entrusted in my care.

By loving my brothers and sisters in CADA For myself, I consider the CADA community as an extension of my own family. Hence my wife and I have taken on some responsibility like home group, cell group, this talk so that we can share some of the things we have learned and are grateful for to others. There are some roles and responsibilities that I commit to in the community. These are the courses of action that I will take.

Attending the Prayer meeting – why? • Protected time to Worship the Lord

• Finding out God’s will for the community • Listening to others, sharing how the Lord is

visible in their lives. • Sharing our experience of the Lord with others. • Fellowship, encouragement with other Christians • Talks (practical teaching, simple message) about

how we can be more like Christ in our speech in our action in the way we raise up our families, in prayer, in resisting temptation

Listening to Talks and participating in Discussion – why? • Personal reflection, decision, order and growth • Relationships with others • Encouraging one another • Passing on to our children • Sets the ground for us to build an environment

with Christian values

By faithfully participating in my cell group and other CADA meetings Participating in the Cell groups – why? • Building up others, living by example for others. • Simply sharing our burdens may make them

lighter or us stronger. • Walk the talk - Living the good life in fellowship

with other Christians • Correcting one another in love • Leadership and pastoring skills are learned and

wisdom is acquired and developed • Men - “As iron sharpens iron, so one man

sharpens another.” (Pr 27:17) It is among men that manly character can be learned. Manly character is built up. Men can discuss and encourage such traits as aggressiveness, courage, loyalty, strength, and self-control. Also, they can talk freely about things that pertain only to men.

• Women grow more to being good women supportive, nurturing, strong women in the Lord.

In time, cell groups should grow where former followers, members become leaders of their own cell groups. Encouraging others and being encouraged and refreshed by how others have gone through similar trials and over-come them. By taking active concern for the poor and needy • I know that during the time I needed work that

other brothers and sisters would come by bringing over groceries. Now that was amazing to me. I was a recipient of the goodness and love of other brothers and sister.

• CADA lipat • We pass on hand me downs • We share the resources that we have been given • We pray for one another • We comfort one another

I want to serve Him…

By giving generously of my time, talents and treasures Serving in the community Ministries – why? • Ministry work – a form of service to the

community, making yourself available, time, talent, treasure springs from us and gives back to the community

• Supports the activities of the community – o Place o Music o Newsletter o Intercession o Reaching out to others - evangelization

Tithing – why? This is related to the sharing of our time, talent and treasure. As with anything – nothing is free. Our community needs money for the practical items like any family.

• We need to provide for our place, speakers, instruments, etc….

• Leadership materials and training • Reading materials and songbook • Promo materials

Are these reasonable expectations from us - why? • As a child grows, it is natural that there is growth

in responsibilities • Example of baby, child, adult = New to

community, cell group • Eventually, you may have to take on cell groups

for other new members • Eventually, you may take on more responsibility

in ministry work • Eventually, you may be sharing how the Lord is

leading in your life, inspiring, encouraging others in an LSS

Community is more than a place where you go for personal reform and support. When you have achieved your goal then it is time to leave. e.g. Alcoholics Anonymous. Commitment extends beyond getting reformed.

By calling others to a full life in Christ Community is more than a social group without any agenda. Commitment is not just in the UP times but also in the DOWN times.

We have a mission that we have been given – to evangelize, to tell the good news and share Jesus with others. We are not an exclusive group, but one that is inclusive – join with the Lord to call others to know about Him. The harvest is plenty but the laborers are few Community helps us to live the Christian life along with others who have decided to do the same. This commitment is for the long haul.

Community commitment is not for everyone. It is not easy, often tiring. It causes us to walk a different path in the world. It causes us to place value on the spiritual more than the material.

By active participation in my church We also bind ourselves not to gossip about each other and keep confidential things confidential.

We are loyal to one another, servants of one another, leaders of one another, setting up a favorable environment where each of us can flourish through mutual support so we can grow in spiritual maturity.

There is order • Manifested in our speech • In our manners and conduct • In our ways of life

The things we do affect each other and reflect who we are. We want others to be able to see Jesus alive in us. If you have love for one another, then everyone will know that you are my disciples. (John 13:35)

CADA Commitment is our way of responding to the 2 greatest commandments: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind and love your neighbors as you love yourself. (Mathew 22:37-39) • This is our purpose - We have a vision. • This is our course of action - We have a mission. • This is our contract with the Lord - We acknowledge what

the Lord has done for us and out of love for Him we respond and seek to become like Christ. To love the Lord with all our heart, all our mind and all our strength. And to love other as you love yourself.

• This is our agreement with one another - We talk the talk. • This is our obligation - We walk the walk. • This is our way of life - We give importance to community

activities and allocate appropriate time in our schedule. We want to have this environment for us to grow in and our children to grow in.

Page 12: ULY EPTEMBER

JULY – SEPTEMBER 2005

Official newsletter of Christ’s Ardent Disciples in Action (CADA) © 2001-2005 Vol. 5 Issue 3 page 12 • This is our pledge - We are accountable to one another to

live out this commitment. How do we know if we are living out our commitment to the Lord and to each other? • If others can see our joy arising from the grace that comes

from the Lord. • If others can see our lives transformed by the Spirit.. • If others can see Jesus alive in us. We want to share this information with you so that if you want to make this commitment you are making it with full knowledge and your eyes open. Similar to a marriage commitment – di siya mainit na kanin na puwede mong iluwa kapag napaso ka (It’s not like hot rice that you can spit out if you get burned). In grateful response to the exceeding goodness of God, I want to give my life fully to Him, to love Him and to serve Him… As God has given us our free will, it is your own decision to make if you will make a commitment to live the Christian life with the fellow Christians in CADA. These ideals, I set before me as an upward call. In the grace of God, may I live them out together with my brothers and sisters in CADA. To God be the glory forever. Amen. In closing, think about the statement of commitment: • Pray about it • Meditate on it • Make a decition • Act on it • Live it (Contributed by Jon Azucena and Tricia Alcasabas)

OUR FAITHFUL GOD

As most of you know the past year and a half to two years have been full of trials for our family. Through all those trials, God has never forsaken but showed us how we may be able to face them. It was like a multiple choice test, it was up to us which one we were going to choose. I was laid off, but Gener got a job in Babies R Us. We lost our medical coverage while I was pregnant with Gio, we got Medicaid from the government to cover our medical needs. My AFP pregnancy result didnʹt turn out good and they suggested abortion, but despite Gio’s low birth weight he is growing healthier every day. Our family in CADA supported us all the way, emotionally, spiritually and financially. Itʹs just unending love that we receive from CADA, until now, just as God loves all of us! Then Gener got a more stable job at Burger King and we decided to move to the east side. It was still trying times for us but we never gave up. Burger King employed me in September of 2004 and in between that I was able to work part-time for a Consulting company with DaimlerChrysler. In January 2005, I received an e-mail from INS stating that our I-485 application was approved. God protected our application and didnʹt let the INS interview me and check if I was then working in IT. Now we are safe and we just have to strive harder. One of the main reasons I came here to the US was to support the education of my step-sister, Ningning. She was in grade school when her father died. He joined our family when I was three years old and was a good provider. He allowed my two (2) elder sisters and me finish college. But after he joined our Creator, it was a struggle for our family. My mom tried to open a business here and there, but it was not working. So, I decided to apply for a position here through my brother-in-lawʹs best friend. My youngest sister, despite the problems that our family was experiencing, remained steadfast and concentrated on her studies. She graduated this March, Magna Cum Laude from the College of the Holy Spirit. A very big blessing which indeed helped her land a great job! It was almost time to renew our apartment’s lease. Everybody knows weʹve been moving here and there every year. I have been here for six years and I have moved from Macomb to Oakland to Wayne and back to Macomb at least seven times. We decided it was time to settle down. In spite of our low monthly income, we got financed to buy a property. This property, I would say, has brought us a lot of blessings and it has just been nonstop. However, there were times after coming from work (Burger King), I would tell my husband, ʺIʹm going to quit!ʺ Same line all the time, every time I dealt with annoying/disobedient crew members, a sudden change of my/his schedule; customer

John 6:25-53 Matthew 5 Philippians 1:21 Philippians 3:7-9 I Peter 2:9-10 II Corinthians 13:3 ʺGod is sufficient in our needs.ʺ ʺI have chosen you.ʺ ʺOur home is in heaven.ʺ ʺTrust on His faithfulness and continue to consecrate our lives to Him.ʺ

I always complained that this was not my line of work, not my field, but still, God has been so good to us and I should be even more thankful for this opportunity to experience other jobs, be of service to others and be able to help my husband provide for our family. We had a small gathering at our condo the day after my birthday, also a house-warming affair. Friends from CADA came to celebrate with our family and prayed over our home and our family. I felt so much love and compassion and I knew then that God heard our cry. A month later, I received a call from a consulting companyʹs recruiting manager, with whom I had interviewed in January. They had been submitting my resume to every opening they had with their clients and it happened that when they sent my resume to Daimler Chrysler (DCS) for a new opening, the client saw my application and told them I was fit for another position that they were about to open. I was scheduled for an interview and when the day finally came, I was face to face with a lady I used to see in the hallway of DCS (I used to work in the same building from 2001-2003), said ʹhiʹ and ʹhelloʹ to every time we saw each other. We just knew each other by face, but not by name. Our conversation didnʹt last five (5) minutes when she told me that I will probably be called for a second interview with the Manager. A couple of days after, I was informed by my recruiting agent that the client liked me and that I would be starting in a week. I was speechless! That time when she called me, I had just left work (BK) and was on my way to meet with my former BK Restaurant Manager because I planned to apply in the other store he manages. I parked my car at the nearby strip mall in Shelby Twp, cried and thanked God. I almost gave up hope. I thought it would be like my other job interviews where the recruiter would say, they found a better person for that position. Then, I felt sad suddenly. I had enjoyed and learned to love my job in BK and the people I worked with. That same day, I went back to the BK store I worked at to speak with my Restaurant Manager. Since they actually required at least two weeks notice when leaving your job, I would have to do it then, giving them less than a weekʹs notice. It was hard especially knowing that I would leave them hanging until they find another manager to fill my spot. I didnʹt start the following week in my IT job, but it was nice to take a weekʹs rest and be able to spend quality time with the kids and Gener. I started August 1st and was welcomed back by my former teammates and friends in DCS. Iʹm so grateful for having very nice friends/co-workers in DCS. In fact, they didnʹt stop checking for any open positions in Mainframe and informing me about it until I got that last interview. Though this project is not a long-term one, Iʹm still so grateful for this opportunity. We have learned our lesson, I hope. A very good friend/co-worker of mine has told our friends that we (our family) have

proven that even with a low income, we can still survive. I told him, it was not just with the income, it was how we kept fighting and believing that in Godʹs time we would be relieved; and how much help weʹve got from others. And lastly, I am so happy and grateful for the time the Lord gave our family. We finally had the chance to go out and have our first family vacation. Gener and I barely see each other and spend time with the kids together. Our daily routine would be - I go to work in the morning, leave the kids with him. He tries to sleep during the day while watching the kids. I come home and itʹs time for him to go to work. Then he comes home early morning, tries to get as much sleep as he can before I leave for work again and the kids will wake up. Usually, if we’re off on the same day, we spent most of the time catching up on chores - cleaning, doing laundry or resting. This time, we were able to enjoy it and have quality time out of our home. Itʹs odd that we never even got the chance to watch a movie or go to the mall during a regular week. But this time, we were able to, while out of town. God is truly amazing! Even this time, He planned it for us. AMEN! (Contributed by Lulu Bagtas)

WAIT ON THE LORD I woke up at 3 am today and came up with these thoughts and wanted to share it. I hope it would be an encouragement to others: Have you ever faced what seemed like an insurmountable difficulty in life that you find yourself despairing? This man did as expressed in PSALM 88 (A Despairing Lament)- a prayer for one who is in despair. Right now, I share exactly his sentiments feeling trapped in a certain situation with nowhere to go or not knowing what to do except bury your head in the sand in shame and sorrow. And as I prayed for my predicament, the Lord led me to Psalm 25 (Confident prayer for Forgiveness and Guidance). And what is God’s guidance? TO WAIT UPON THE LORD AND REMAIN FAITHFUL IN HIM. To be honest, I have no other choice but to wait. But wait a minute, that was not the only thing that God said, He also said remain faithful to Him. After turning away from Him a few years back, I vowed to myself that I want to remain faithful to Him no matter what. As I went about with my daily life, I still find myself despairing, hurting inside and being angry about a lot of things. I went back to God and said, “Help me go through this and tell me what to do while waiting.” I came across the book of Proverbs 16: 1-9. And I realized that I was waiting on the Lord but not being faithful to Him in little things. It was so easy to fall in the trap of giving in to anger, cursing and being ill-tempered when you are faced with a problem. And as I prayed more, I realized that God wanted me to be faithful not

Page 14: ULY EPTEMBER

JULY – SEPTEMBER 2005

Official newsletter of Christ’s Ardent Disciples in Action (CADA) © 2001-2005 Vol. 5 Issue 3 page 14 only in prayer or in being with the community but also to continue to show kindness and love to those around me in spite of the difficulties. This time, I cried because I realized I could not do it, I hadno more strength to love or to show kindness. I was all spent and weary and it was too much for me to handle. Then, I remember my promise to Him -- to be faithful to Him. I have to let God be God by letting Him take charge of my life -- to allow Him to love others through me in spite of my difficulties, His love not mine, by His grace and power and strength, not mine. Now I know, waiting on the Lord also means fixing our eyes on Him, not on our needs, not on what lays before us as we wait and hope for Him to come to our aid. Come to think of it, His aid has already come to me and I just didn’t realize it when I allowed Him to take charge of my life and allowed Him to love others through me. What an awesome God He is! He lets us go through difficulties that we might be changed and at the same time experience His love in a very powerful way. As I end this sharing, I still do not have the answer to my problem but it no longer matters. I am content with His love. Our God is all that matters. How blessed we are to know His love and kindness! Let it not remain with us but shared with others that they too may come to know of God’s love. (Contributed by Jing Demetria) ARE YOU SAVED? One Saturday morning, when I was in Costco doing some shopping, a man approached me and said he wanted to ask me a very important question. I replied ok, and he asked me, ʺAre you saved?” I was speechless; I didn’t know what to say. He then continued saying that he could show me how to be saved. He took his pocket bible. At that point, I was able to respond to him. I said I believe what he believes and that I am a Christian. He said, ʺGood thenʺ. Our conversation ended, but it made me think about this encounter, especially when he asked me ʺAre you saved?ʺ Before this happened, I was feeling very low spiritually. I felt that God gave me a burden to follow Him. I asked myself, ʺWhy should it be so hard?ʺ ʺWhy canʹt I just be anybody else?ʺ. Distractions and discouragement continued to pour in, which really made it hard for me to really focus on my spiritual growth. I really felt alone this time. Then I started realizing how God continues to bless me. He blessed me with brothers and sisters that I really could count on. He blessed me with a cell group where I could express my pain and joy. He blessed me with a job that supported my needs. He blessed me with shelter, good health and many many more. Then I heard the Lord ask me, ʺWhy despair?, Is my grace not sufficient for you?ʺ. I replied, ʺForgive me Lord, I have sinned against you for not trusting in youʺ. This became my prayer, for a long time it was my own shortcomings and sins that brought me down on my spiritual journey.

The Lord does not want me or anybody else to suffer and live a miserable life. He wants what is best for you or me, we need to respond and continue to seek His will and grace for us. Also, we need to repent and turn away from sins; this will really strain our relationship with the Lord. Through this we will experience joy and peace. Now, if anyone will ask me again if I am saved, I will say yes, though I am a sinner by the grace of God I will be saved. ʺBut because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.ʺ - Ephesians 2:4-6 (Contributed by Renz Tejada)
