FROM “THEY” TO “WE” UMCOR is the United Methodist Committee on Relief, and yet they are anything but a typical committee. They are a program by the General Board of Global Ministries taking action when disaster strikes around the globe. March 31, 2019 UMCOR SUNDAY UMCOR acts as the hands and feet of Christ’s church, moving towards the most vulnerable in their time of need. Helping people in their darkest days doesn’t have to be something “they” do, it can be something “we” do. We hope that you will give generously this upcoming UMCOR Sunday so that we, along with our United Methodist congregations around the globe, can share compassionate relief in the midst of devastation. Until then, let’s be praying for the volunteers, the lives they touch, and for hearts to be moved. This grandmother is raising several special needs grandchildren and all have been displaced since the flooding occurred. volunteers to assist with the process of getting this family’s belongings back into thehome after the repairs are complete and to provide a caring Christian presence.

The plan is to help with the “moving back in” on Friday, April 12 & Saturday, April 13. Ifyou (or a team) are available and willing to serve, please contact Katherine Hunter atthe conference office with the day(s) and time(s) so that we know how many folks toexpect.

Fall 2018Giving thanks for your response to last fall’s flooding. Many of you responded to theflooding that happened last fall in Tarrant and Ellis county, along with helping in theMarble Falls area of the Rio Conference. We had folks assisting with an EmergencyAgency center in Tarrant County, several folks helping with assessments and manyteams provide a caring Christian presence during a difficult time for the folks of thesecommunities. We recently had a group go to help with cleanup at the Mooreville UMCthat burned down. Thank you all for responding. In addition, as a Conference ourchurches generously gave to support the relief and recovery efforts of last fall’s storms,hurricanes, and typhoons. On behalf of ALL the survivors, thank you for respondingthrough your prayers, gifts and presence. 2019 Jan- March classesWe have had a wonderful start to 2019 with our classes. We have held 5 ERT basicclasses throughout the conference with 114 registered and 3 re certifications/advancedlevel classes with 35 registered for those classes. We will be scheduling one more set ofclasses before June to be held in the Central district. If you know of folks wanting ERTtraining or needing to re-certify watch for these dates. (Re-certification should happenwithin a 6 month window either prior or after the expiration date listed on the badge.) Ifyou have questions about expiration dates contact Clara Downey,[email protected]. What are we doing this spring? Spring is here, which means beautiful spring days, blue bonnets and Texas springstorms. Please consider checking your PPE and making sure you have your personalthings ready to go along with touching base with the other ERT’s in yourchurch to prepare necessary items to respond when a need arises. Remember you canalways respond to your local communities, but outside of that area please wait for anemail of invitation from Clara or me. If you do have a disaster in your own community besure and touch base with us so we can assist and support you. The Mid-West record flooding and what we can do. As always pray and give to UMCOR Disaster Response. As an ERT; the Great PlainsConference has said they will be opening up a call for help as soon as they can getready to receive volunteers. Let Clara know if you would be interested in traveling tothe Mid-West once we receive the invitation to come. Supplies on handWe currently have cleaning buckets and hygiene kits spread throughout ourconference so that we can respond quickly in the event of a local disaster. If yourchurch assembles kits for Sager Brown let us know so we can celebrate that with you.We may also ask to transfer a few to one of our supply depots around the conference.The locations are Lifepoint UMC & Silver Creek UMC in the North district, Tenth StreetUMC in the South district, Mansfield FUMC in the East district, Comanche FUMC in theWest district and Hillsboro FUMC in the Central district. InterGenerate is a conference designed for both practitioners and academicsseeking to enhance life-long faith formation through intergenerational Christianexperiences. Senior pastors, professors, age-level ministers, sociologists, churchconsultants - anyone who seeks to better understand and ultimately cultivate moreintentionally intergenerational discipleship practices will find something atInterGenerate. Conference dates are May 20 - 22, 2019.

ZOE Ministry transforms the lives oforphaned and vulnerable childrenfrom poverty and neglect to self-sufficiency and community within threeyears. Creating Hope andEmpowering Lives

McCurdy Ministries Community Center createshope and empowers the lives of children youth,adults and families through education, life skills

and faith-based programs in Española, NM.McCurdy is a 106 year old United Methodist NationalMission Institution providing after school, preschool,

mental health counseling, summer camp and youth programs. McCurdy MinistriesCommunity Center supports the students and families of McCurdy Charter School byproviding free mental health counseling services and by acting as the vendor for theBreakfast and Lunch program. Volunteers in Mission Teams, Emergency ResponseTeams and NOMAD Teams come to McCurdy usually for a week at a time as a means ofmaking God’s difference in our community. This mission opportunity is especially designed for men and women who might identifythemselves as Baby Boomers or of the Quiet Generation or the Greatest Generation

who want to transform the world as a disciple of Jesus Christ! The UMCOR Sager BrownDepot is a United Methodist ministry that receives, sorts, packs and ships supplies for

disaster relief around the world.

Mission team members may choose to work in the depot, or in the local community orwith maintenance opportunities on the depot campus. Accommodations are climatecontrolled dorms with beds and an excellent dining hall. There is also availability for

people to stay in their own RV Campers. The work-week will include one day to tour inthe local community. Cost of trip is $236.00 plus transportation costs.

Alabama Rural Ministry is an UMVIM project in the Alabama-West FloridaConference. Due to the recent disasters, the tornadoes in Lee County and HurricaneMichael in the panhandle, they have expanded their ministry, while continuing theircurrent work. There is a great need for mission teams now and into next year. ARMcan host a variety of teams and they have staff to assist with the work on theministry. For more information, please click here.
