Cultural Competency Initiative:

Through a funded grant from HRSA, we developed a mentoring program along with the Center for Professional Development and Mentoring, (CPDM), in order to impact nurse retention within the profession.

Part of our commitment to the grant is to have our mentors be aware of cultural competency issues both in patient care and within their leadership roles as mentors.

The Center for Professional Development & Mentoring is supported in part through a federal grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), DHHS. Grant #: D65HP05254

We developed a cultural competency module, (by utilizing public on-line modules and a series of video sessions conducted by Dr. Patricia Coleman-Burns, Director of Multicultural Affairs at the School of Nursing, and Co-investigator on our grant), that in part, assess fundamental awareness of cultural competency and diversity concepts.

Completion of the learning module is a requirement for mentor matching and is considered part of our mentor training.

Impact: Mentoring program launched February 2007 – potential

200 – 300 trained mentors within UMHS and UM School of Nursing.

Lessons Learned: There are many aspects of cultural competency

awareness as it relates to patient care and the nursing role. There is a need for cultural competency and diversity awareness as our mentors prepare for their roles as leaders.
