The University of Missouri-St. Louis sports teams compete in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) is a
collegiate athletic conference affiliated at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)'s Division II level.
Member institutions are located in the U.S. states of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, and Wisconsin. The
GLVC is considered one of the top small college basketball conferences in the nation and placed a team in the
men's NCAA Division II final over 11 straight years from 1994 to 2004.
In October 2008 Maryville University (MO) and The University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) accepted
invitations to join the GLVC and began competing in the conference in the fall of 2009. For men's and women's
basketball, the league split into three divisions based on geography (East, North, and West) for the 2009-2010
and 2010-2011 seasons, and reverted to two divisions when William Jewell College joined
in 2011. Baseball and Tennis operate in a two-division format, while all other sports run a single table.
On January 19, 2010, the GLVC announced the addition of football as a league championship sport, beginning
with the 2012 season. Kentucky Wesleyan, Missouri S&T and Saint Joseph's moved from the Great Lakes
Football Conference, McKendree University and Quincy from the Mid-States Football Association of the
National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and Indianapolis ended its
affiliate membership in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) to join William Jewell and
form the seven-team league.
On October 6, 2010 it was announced that McKendree University accepted an invitation to the GLVC as
the 17th member of the GLVC and begin participating in the conference in 2012. The following day, the
conference announced that it had approved Central State University and Urbana College for associate
membership in football, increasing the number of teams which will compete in the initial season of football to
nine.
On October 18, it was announced that a new league, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC;
not to be confused with the former Division I Great Midwest Conference), was forming for 2013. Charter
members include Kentucky Wesleyan from the GLVC along with Central State and Urbana (GLVC
members in football). Joining them are Ursuline, Notre Dame, and Cedarville, with the G-MAC hoping to
expand to 10 members. The new conferences' sponsored sports were not immediately announced.
Kentucky Wesleyan, with its eight national basketball titles, is the biggest loss for the GLVC, but, with only 680
students, the school had trouble competing in the other sports against much larger schools.
On December 8, 2011 Northern Kentucky University officially accepted an invitation from the Division I Atlantic
Sun Conference, effective July 1, 2012. It was announced on June 8, 2012 that the GLVC Council of
Presidents had voted unanimously to accept Truman State University, located in Kirksville, Missouri into the
conference. The "Bulldogs" will begin competition in the GLVC effective Fall, 2013. Truman State was a
founding member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, and becomes the seventh Missouri
school to join the GLVC since 1995.
On August 27, 2012, it was announced that Central State University will be leaving the GLVC to join the
Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) as a football-only member, effective July 1, 2013.

MARK TWAIN BUILDING - CHUCK SMITH COURT
UMSL's Mark Twain Building, home of
the Chuck Smith Court, serves as the
home facility to the UMSL men's and
women's basketball teams and the
UMSL volleyball team.
The Mark Twain Building was built in the
fall of 1971 to serve as the host facility
for UMSL's intercollegiate athletics and
recreation and intramural activities. The
gym has seating to accommodate 3,700
fans, including a court-side, lower level
section with chair back seats.
In the summer of 2003, the University installed a new, four-sided scoreboard above the court. In 1986, the
arena underwent a face lift with the installation of new bleachers, including chair-back seats on the lower
level. Other recent upgrades include improvements in the facilities lighting and sound system. Prior to the
2003-04 season, the facility saw another upgrade with the addition of a new, four-sided scoreboard that
hangs directly above half court. In fall of 2006, due to storm damage, the gym floor was completely
replaced with all new support and wood surface. The new court was named Chuck Smith Court after
UMSL’s first athletic director and men’s basketball coach.
The Mark Twain Building has served as the host for a variety of sporting events outside of UMSL athletics.
Some of those events included the MHSAA boys and girls basketball tournament games, and in the
summer of 2002, served as the home gym for the St. Louis Skyhawks of the United States Basketball
League. Other accommodations in the Mark Twain Building include a jogging track on the lower level, a
swimming pool, locker room facilities, weight lifting room, equipment room and a training room.
Strength & Conditioning
The main objective of the UMSL
Strength and Conditioning Program is
to help each athlete achieve their
maximal level of performance while
reducing the occurrence of injuries
through a balanced total body program
that is designed and administered by
the Director of Sports Performance.
Training programs are designed to
develop the components of athleticism;
strength, power, flexibility, speed,
agility, footwork, endurance, metabolic
conditioning, body composition, mental focus and motivation.
We use free weight training. Free weights allow athletes to move athletically, and not in a fixed motion
pattern like most machines. We train movements and thereby train the muscles that produce these
movements.
We are not trying to produce Olympic lifters, Power lifters, or Bodybuilders; however we will use varying
exercises from each discipline to enhance the training or our athletes. We aim to train the body to move in
the most efficient manner possible. To accomplish this we will continually coach and emphasize proper
execution of lifts in the weight room, warm-up, agility, and speed drills on the playing field.
The Director of Sports Performance will challenge each athlete to bring an attitude of hard work,
accountability and total effort to each workout so that the athlete will improve both physically and mentally.
UMSL features 26 regular season games, including 12 home games and 19 games in the always tough
Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Under the direction of second-year head coach Bob Sundvold , the Tritons will officially start the campaign
on November 8 at NCAA Division I opponent Missouri in the lone exhibition game of the season.
UMSL will then open its 48th season of intercollegiate play in Quincy, Ill., November 15-16 as the Hawks
host the Microtel GLVC/GLIAC Challenge. The Tritons will face Grand Valley State and Ferris State.
The Tritons will host NAIA member Benedictine of Springfield on November 25 in the home opener and
also entertains Central Christian on December 5 before traveling across town to Lindenwood on
December 10.
UMSL will host MacMurray on December 13 before traveling to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for its final two non-
conference games. The Tritons will meet West Texas A&M on December 20 and Nova Southeastern on
December 21.
As the new year begins, UMSL will turn its attention to the GLVC schedule, beginning at home on January
2 against Illinois Springfield and on January 4 against McKendree.
UMSL then travels to Lewis on January 8 and Wisconsin-Parkside on January 10 for a meeting with the
two-time regular season GLVC East Division champions. The Rangers finished with a 23-7 overall record
and made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The Tritons return home on January 15 to host Truman State before their road strength is tested with six
of their next eight games being played on the road. UMSL will visit Quincy (January 17), Maryville
(January 19), Rockhurst (January 29), William Jewell (January 31), Indianapolis (February 5) and Saint
Joseph's (February 7). UIndy is coming off a 24-5 record and an NCAA Tournament bid.
Sandwiched in that road-heavy stretch are a pair of home games against Missouri S&T on January 22 and
NCAA-II Elite Eight finalist Drury on January 24.
UMSL then closes out the regular season by playing four of its final five games at home. UMSL hosts
NCAA Tournament participants Southern Indiana and Bellarmine on February 12 and 14, respectively,
and welcomes Quincy on February 19. A return trip to Truman State on February 21 marks the end of the
regular season road schedule, while the regular season closes at home on February 26 against Maryville.
