La exposición Projects: Done reúne trabajos de Candida Höfer pertenecientes a distintos proyectos realizados entre 1968 y 2008.

En este contexto, “proyecto” se refiere a un método de trabajo que viene predeterminado por unos plazos temporales o una finalidad concreta, o por ambos factores a la vez. A efectos de la exposición, las obras de Projects: Done se sitúan al margen de las producidas habitualmente por la artista.

A juzgar por los temas aquí abordados, tal separación no parece evidente. Únicamente el proyecto de las máquinas de pinball —destinado inicialmente a una publicación etnográfica que no vio la luz— o el de Liverpool, con sus numerosas escenas de calle, justificarían a primera vista esa separación, puesto que no abordan temas asociados habitualmente al trabajo fotográfico de Höfer: bibliotecas, museos y otros espacios expositivos o de reunión pública. Sin embargo, una vez observadas las imágenes de los proyectos expuestos resulta patente de inmediato su conexión con la temática general de Höfer, con sus contenidos, usos, presentación y percepción.

La diferencia entre proyecto y obra habitual es más sutil: cada uno de los proyectos fija un marco estructural de ordenación para las imágenes que reúne; un orden que las imágenes aceptan y a la vez trascienden. La exposición es una invitación a explorar esa tensión.

Se exponen aquí imágenes de catorce proyectos. Hay además un decimoquinto que es variable y cuya instalación es distinta en las diferentes etapas de la itinerancia. La producción de Sevilla, como las anteriores del Museum Morsbroich y MARCO de Vigo y las que vendrán a continuación, es fruto de una estrecha colaboración entre la artista, Kuehn Malvezzi Architects y los comisarios Doreen Mende y Markus Heinzelmann.

Cada una de las instalaciones reitera la idea central del proyecto: “Exponer”. Es decir, relacionar las imágenes con un lugar concreto, un espacio concreto, un momento concreto y un contexto cultural concreto.

The exhibition Projects: Done assembles works by Candida Höfer from projects she realized between 1968 and 2008.

“Project” in this context means a way of working that is predetermined by a time schedule or a defined goal or by both. Works from these projects are – for the purpose of this exhibition – set apart from works that result from the continuous workflow of the artist.

Judging from the subjects of these projects such a separation does not seem evident: At most the project on pinball machines (intended for an ethnographical publication that never came out) – or the Liverpool project with its numerous street scenes may at first sight justify such a separation because these projects do not show the kind of subjects we associate with Höfer’s work: libraries, museums and other exhibition or public assembly spaces. However, upon looking at the images even from those projects it is immediately clear that they connect with her general theme, space, its contents, its use, its presentation and its perception.

The difference between project and workflow is subtler: Each project sets a structural framework of order for the images it unites, an order that the images accept and transcend at the same time. The exhibition is an invitation to explore this tension.

Images from fourteen projects are being exhibited; the fifteenth project is a moveable one, it is each different installation of the exhibition at its different venues. The production in Sevilla, as the previous ones at Schloss Morsbroich and MARCO in Vigo, and the ones to follow, are the result of a close cooperation between the artist, Kuehn Malvezzi Architects and the curators Doreen Mende and Markus Heinzelmann. Each installation reiterates the project “to exhibit “, i.e. to relate the images to a specific place, a specific space, a specific time and a specific cultural setting.

La estrecha colaboración entre la artista y los arquitectos se remonta a 2002, cuando Kuehn Malvezzi acondicionó la fábrica de cerveza Binding en Kassel para acoger una de las sedes de la Documenta 11, un espacio que fue precisamente donde Candida Höfer presentaría sus Burgueses de Calais.

La presentación de “la exposición” como proyecto diferenciado de los demás proyectos de Candida Höfer responde a la convicción de la artista de que la exhibición es una parte integral del trabajo artístico. También es un comentario irónico acerca de la noción —introducida por la propia exposición— de que existe una diferencia entre los “proyectos concluidos” y las actividades cotidianas de la artista. Los proyectos de Höfer sólo pueden darse por “concluidos” cuando han sido expuestos, y tal exposición constituye siempre un proyecto en sí mismo, dado que está determinada por unos plazos y responde a una finalidad consistente, en este caso, en mostrar imágenes de espacios en un espacio específico y en cómo un espacio muestra imágenes de espacios específicos.

the Binding Brewery into one of the sites for Documenta 11, this particular site incidentally becoming the space where Candida Höfer was presenting her Burghers of Calais.

Presenting “exhibiting” as a distinct project in the context of the Candida Höfer’s projects reflects the artist’s conviction that showing is an integral part of an artist’s work; it is also an ironic comment on the very notion – introduced by the exhibition – that there is a difference between “projects done“ and the artist’s day-to-day activities: Höfer’s projects can only be seen as “done” when they have been exhibited and any such exhibition is always a project determined as it is by a schedule and a goal, here the project to show images of spaces in a particular space and to show how a space is showing images of particular spaces.
