The campuses in both Fredericton and Saint John offer apartment-style and single room residences. Every suite comes with a private three-piecebath and full kitchen, equipped with all major appliances, including a dishwasher and microwave. Both cities also offer affordable and convenientoff-campus housing choices.

UNB’s faculty and graduate students arereaching out and changing the world —conducting world-class research in labs and libraries far beyond the four walls offormal learning —making a significant difference in people’s lives. Our studentsand faculty travel to the far north, plungeinto oceans and rivers, delve into forests and scrutinize our society.

Melissa Battler conducted research that will help to send humans to Mars. Working with Dr. John Spray, the director of Canada’s only NASA-affiliated planetary and space science centre, Melissa participated in a number of Mars simulation missions in the arctic.

Julie Easley is researching issues of support for young adults with cancer. Why? Because when she had cancer at age 23, she couldn’t find a wig for a woman her age.

The Canadian Rivers Institute, as a national centre of excellence in water research, has the best state-of-the-art research and teaching facility in Canada.Tim Jardine’s study of mercury contamination in streams and rivers tracks the movement of this toxic element through the food chain. His research will determine how common water insects and small fish can be used as “sentinels”.

Heidi LeBlanc’s research on the effects onwater insects of pesticides used in growingpotatoes will help the federal governmentwith pesticide management.

Dr. Kevin Englehart and Dr. Peter Kyberdat the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, internationally recognized for its research in artificial limbs, are developing “bionicarms” (prosthetic limbs that are controlledby muscle and brain impulses).

Leah Levac is studying marginalizedteenage women. She received a prestigiousTrudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarshipvalued at $150,000 over three years and is looking at barriers such as low incomeand low literacy rates that prevent adolescents from becoming more engagedin our society.

Dr. Thierry Chopin, marine biologist andseaweed expert, is combining complementaryanimal and plant species at aquaculturesites. This responsible aquaculture practiceprovides environmental biomitigation, economic diversification and increased societal acceptance to the industry inNew Brunswick and worldwide.

Numerous grad students, including Craig Davidson and Sheri Benning, havepublished books with respected Canadianpublishers shortly after graduating fromUNB’s MA in Creative Writing.

Hana Kucera who holds an NSERC award, was the catalyst behind “Let’s Talk SciencePartnership Program”, part of a national organization of grad students bringinghands-on science into the public schoolclassrooms.

Rose McCloskey, a winner of a CIHR doctoral fellowship of $55,000 per year, isimproving the quality of seniors’ health careby looking at clinical errors and the disintegration of care that may occur whenolder adults move from long-term care settings into hospital emergency departments.

Denis LeBlanc, a CIHR fellowship recipient, wants to help improve the quality of life forFirst Nations people in New Brunswick byexamining how Aboriginal communities access health research funding and how they use the research findings.

UNB offers you a great combination of people and place. Faculty and staff are easilyaccessible and go that extra mile for you; the environment is one of collaboration, providing combinations of opportunities, professional connections and excellent research capabilities.

As well, the active Graduate Student Association — founded by students — will provide you with a valuable network of peers to give you access to information andresources to help ensure your success bothpersonally and professionally.
