Part 1: Review Important Definitions Directions: Review the following definitions to prepare for today’s activity. Topic : What a piece of writing is about. Theme : The central idea or insight about human life the author wants us to obtain from reading a piece of writing. It is the story’s deeper meaning. Theme Statement : A complete sentence that describes the theme of a piece of writing. Moral : A moral gives advice and wisdom to the reader. Please note: We are not writing morals today. Part 2: Determine Theme Statement Rules Directions: Think back to when we were discussing themes. Let’s create a list of Theme Statement Rules based on what we already know. Theme Statement Rules Part 3: Brainstorming Directions: Watch clips from the movie and think about the details and events presented in the movie clips. Record what you observe in the table below.
