UNC Hospitals again received due recognition from U.S. News & World Report, with three health care
specialties in the top 50 in the United States and several others in the top 25 percent nationally. This marks the 20th year the Chapel-Hill-based hospital has received multiple top rankings from the magazine – no small accomplishment for a hospital seeing more than 37,000 patients per year.
Established in 1952 as a four-year medical school and hospital,
UNC Health Care now employs more than 7,200 employees with an 804-bed medical center. A not-for-profit hospital system owned by the State of North Carolina, UNC Hospitals was awarded 11 top rankings in specialties from U.S. News & World Report. The hospital was nationally ranked among the top 50 hospitals nationally in gynecology (34), ear, nose and throat (42), and cancer (43). The hospital also received high-performing recognition in cardiology and heart surgery, gastroenterology, nephrology, pulmonology, diabetes and endocrinology, geriatrics,

competition-winning food service. Creating a healthy environment through the Healthy NC Hospitals initiative, UNC Hospitals joins 127 organizations in the state to meet high standards for healthy, tobacco-free hospital campuses with healthy food policies.
The Healthy NC Hospitals initiative is spearheaded by NC Prevention Partners, “a statewide nonprofit and leader in reducing preventable illness and early death caused by tobacco use, poor nutrition and physical inactivity,” according to its Website. Founded
in 1998, the NCPP has dabbled in everything from insurance reform to advocating for funds from North Carolina’s tobacco settlement to increasing cigarette excise tax.
UNC Hospitals have done much to meet and exceed standards set by the NCPP initiative. Visitors and patients can now choose from a variety of café-style options ranging from sandwiches to gourmet-style meals. These culinary delights are prepared by UNC’s awardwinning culinary team and Black Hat Chefs. Created within UNC, the Black Hat program is a mandatory four-tiered program complete with written and practical exams that provide in-house cooks with culinary training in week-long modules. This program continues to elevate the quality of food served to patients and customers.
The chefs at UNC Hospitals have expanded their culinary chops to bring healthier, tastier meals to sta and patients alike. Inpatients meet with hosts from the Nutrition & Food Services department before each meal and are given options in conjunction with personalized nutrition plans. The variety of meals available in the cafeteria caters to a variety of tastes, from some locally sourced options at “Continental Traders,” to made-to-order sushi at
