What Is Unconscious

Bias?

Unconscious bias refers to a bias that we are unaware of, and which happens outside of our control. It is a bias that happens automatically and is triggered by our brain making quick judgments and assessments of people and situations, influenced by our background, cultural environment and personal experiences.

Unconscious Bias In The Workplace

• A bias is a mental process by which the brain uses associations that are so ingrained, we are unaware of them and cannot control them.

• While having a negative connotation they serve an important function, by helping us “fill in the gaps”.

• They help us to act quickly and make sense out of vast amounts of information.

• It’s call “fast thinking”.

• Studies since the 80’s confirm that people harbor unconscious bias even when they believe discrimination and prejudice are wrong.

• Interviews are a poor predictor of job success because we tend to hire people like ourselves.
