where to stayThe Close combines the best of

town and country, being right in

the centre but with the bonus of

a walled garden. This 16th century

townhouse oozes charm and

character, as does The Priory,

also centrally situated and

renowned for its wood-fired

pizzas and dry-aged steak.

hidden gemsLocal lore: Dolphins feature on the

Market Hall and on the town crest.

Legend has it that either a local man

was saved by two dolphins, or that

the dolphins saved a locally-owned

ship from sinking. Whatever the

truth, the dolphin is now the symbol

of the town. Feoffees is not a

mis-spelling of coffee, but the term

for four residents who bought the

Market Hall for the town in1633.

It is still owned by public-spirited

locals.

top tipWalk down Chipping Street to

the Goods Shed Art Centre and

Whistle Stop Café. The former

railway buildings now house a

thriving arts centre hosting film

nights, exhibitions and craft

workshops. The Rail Lands Park

is ideal for an after-lunch stroll,

bike ride or work out.

Tetbury is the second largest town in the Cotswolds. Built on the site of a Saxon

hill fort, its prosperity stems from the medieval wool trade. Look up at the steep

gables of the wool merchants’ houses, and climb the Chipping Steps lined with

weavers’ cottages – architectural heritage in abundance! The town centre is a

conservation area and many buildings have graded listing.

day 1The Market House is the centrepiece of

Tetbury – physically and historically.

The Grade I listed building dates from

1651, and the town was granted a market

charter in the Middle Ages. Markets are

still held here twice a week. Look one way

to glimpse St Mary’s Church – worth a

visit to see the box pews – before exploring

all the individual shops in Long Street.

Antique shops, fashion boutiques and

art galleries all feature, as does HRH

Prince Charles’s own shop Highgrove.

There are plenty of teashops and cosy

inns to tempt you along the way too!

hidden gemsChavenage House may seem very

familiar to film buffs, as it features

as Trenwith in Poldark and can be

spotted in scenes from Wolf Hall

and Larkrise to Candleford.

This atmospheric gem has barely

changed since Tudor times. Built

much later, but using traditional

materials, is the wonderful Arts and

Crafts house Rodmarton Manor.

Both properties are open to the

public.

top tipFor a truly relaxing stay head for

Calcot Manor and Spa, just a few

miles from Tetbury. This converted

farmhouse is a true rural retreat.

day 2Tetbury is the Cotswold town with

the most royal connections. Just

outside is HRH Prince Charles’s house

Highgrove – a tour of the remarkable

gardens is a must. HRH Princess Anne

lives close by at Gatcombe Park which

hosts the annual festival of eventing.

Also nearby is Westonbirt, the national

Arboretum, with its treetop walk, play

trail and some 15,000 trees from across

the globe – beautiful in every season.
