DESCRIPTION

The Undecided Art Collective are coming to the Ventnor Exchange for a different kind of art exhibition. The theme is LOVE: bringer of unequaled joys and unfathomable sorrows; catalyst of temporary (and sometimes lasting) madness; trigger for strange behaviours of every kind. Love penetrates the furthest reaches of our experience and tears us in every direction, from invincible ecstasy to numbing mediocrity, right down to unfathomable despair and back again, changed. Its partners in crime; light-headedness, joy, nervousness, self-doubt, excitement, fear, embarrassment, silliness, apprehension and the gang all play their part in its strange dance. 'It will be uplifting; it will be harrowing... Either way, you're going to LOVE it.'

Bringer of unequaled joys and unfathomable sorrows; catalyst of temporary - and sometimes

lasting - Madness. Trigger for strange behaviours of every kind; Love penetrates the furthest reaches of our experience and tears us in every direction, from invincible ecstasy to numbing mediocrity, right down to utter despair and back again, changed.

undecidedonloveFor this show we have expanded on the traditional Valentine’s

theme, presenting ‘the ‘L’ word’ as the vast and variable subject that it is. In bringing together this eclectic collection

of artworks and artefacts, we hope to examine, celebrate and lament the ubiquitous monster that is Love....

The Undecided Art Collective was formed in 2012 and now comprises more than 50 artists, poets and musicians from all over the world. This is the 8th Exhibition curated by the Collective, a peace-loving, experimental bunch who work together to expand their skills, further their practice and bring their work to a larger audience. We also produce a high end Art magazine called ‘UNDECIDED’ (www.facebook.com/undecidedartzine) and help to facilitate creative ventures, workshops and initiatives in the community here on the Isle of Wight.

Julie BarnesI’d say I’m really into textiles and embroidery, maths, Japa-nese anything and psychedelic posters. What I do with all these is make my own patterns to create ornate characters, very precisely. I also teach sewing to all levels and in groups.

Stephen ButterfieldI am a painter who doesn’t have a set style. At the moment I am concentrating on colour in acrylic paint and will probably move on to something else soon. I also paint in oil but again, I have no set subject or style. For this exhibition I have concentrated on the darker side of love stories.

Rachael BerryI’ve been working as a portrait Artist between London and the Isle of Wight for the past 8 years. I fall in love on average five times a day: with feelings, places, ideas, insects and all kinds of people. There are some people I fall in love with five times a day, most of whom are members of the Undecided Art Collective.

My work is largely concerned with the sensation of familiarity so, for the Undecided on Love show, I have tried to isolate and articulate some feelings that, although very personal, may be familiar to others in one way or another.

Holly CadeHolly Cade is a 23 year old freelance photographer cur-rently based in Newport. Over the past few years she has worked on an ongoing series “Little People” in which she follows miniature figures on their adventures around the Is-land and beyond, however, her main body of work focuses on people (portrait, fashion, street, events etc). Holly has also built an impressive portfolio as a wedding photogra-pher and is currently taking bookings.

Mark DicksonI paint portraits, landscapes, moonscapes and bitter-sweet voids, usually imagined, though sometimes to parody places I know and exaggerate any overtones of oddities within their character. Often splicing in elements of a world invented from a microcosmic void that certain places seem to be afflicted by, but only at certain times of the year.

Inspired largely by dreams and all the numerous subtleties of their atmospheres, and a slight but reoccurring realisation that somehow, matter is no more solid than music.

Dixcey‘I have drawn for as long as I can remember.. I find it is both an escape and a full immersion into and out of life. Everything inspires me in some way. How can it not?’

“Dixcey is the founder of the Undecided Art Collective. Her work is virvatious, honest and expressive of things that are deeply felt and difficult to articulate; things that she pinpoints with an incisive, approachable eloquence that welcomes even the most lost of souls back into the imperfect, beautiful world. She’s also inordinately humble and would never have agreed to me printing this.” Rachael Berry

Luke EllisonMy mind is constantly spinning; always analyzing the world around us, not sure why – probably its just me. I have an unusual, maybe unnatural, ability for focus on the unseen detail around us.

Howard HardimanArt communicates both the subtle and sub-lime in ways that fascinates me. Whether it’s the poetry of mathematics or the gentle colour shifts in paint, there’s a power that speaks to me. My research branches into pure mathematics, colour theory, architec-ture and Bronze Age shamanism. My work uses drawing (both physical and digital) and painting in oil to explore movement through line and colour and to reach for a sense of beauty and majesty.

Adam HarveyIsle of Wight based Artist Adam Harvey produces delicate pencil works from life and from his nightmares. He also makes large pieces in oil and acrylic depicting dys-topian scenes based on the dirty failings of capitalism and rooted in a life-long fascination with propaganda.

Two of his drawings were recently shortlisted for the inaugu-ral Derwent Drawing Prize and exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London.

JO JOHNSONJo Johnson creates contemporary embroideries that are both quirky and playful using ephemera, text and chil-drens’ drawings. Subtle interventions of scale and form are employed giving new permanence to found imagery and emerging narratives.

Mhairi MacaulayMy work is characterised by a fascination with ‘The So-cial’: the way individuals interact with each other may it be in reference to their dwelling, cultural grounding or political spheres. I am sustained by a fascination with the psychology behind human ritualistic events. From a monument of peace being created in the streets of London during riots or a rural traditional event being constantly modernised to stay alive. When an individual joins a crowd they move as one entity like a murmuration of starlings or a shoal of fish that has automatic action, this is just one of the many things that bug me from time to time.

Jo Hummel-NewellCollecting is an important part of my creative process, I gather things, scraps, shopping lists, tickets I have found at a train station, pockets, all of a particular appearance—discoloured, loved, lost, stained, beautiful and damaged. The visual quality of the work references the aged appearance of my collec-tions. Since graduating from the royal college of art, joanne has exhibited with WW Gallery at the 53rd Venice Biennale, was shortlisted for the jerwood drawing prize and RWS contemporary watercolour prize. She was also selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2014.

Jake PackhamJake Packham has been knitting on and around the South coast of England for years and is now based in Germa-ny. He takes what work he can to learn more about wool because he reckons there must be more to life than BFL 4-ply. Recently he has started to take knitting, if not him-self, seriously. This piece is made of favours Jake and his lovely fiance Anna have been knitting for their Wedding this coming April.

HOLLY MASLENHolly Maslen works exclusively in black and white, concentrating on the balance between occupied spaces and those in-between. In the forthcoming Love exhibition Holly has incorporated her written work and produced a couple of handmade books, one of which was released last year, the second book hasn’t been available until now! Both books are influenced by her love of Japanese culture and the simplicity behind telling a story with meaning but using few words. There will also be a limited edition range of Love matchboxes availa-ble, created especially for the exhibition.

STEVEN SALESMy practice is stimulated by queries and investigations. For this work I wanted to discover and explore which common element was present in all the people I had ever loved. What did I do for the people I cared for?

The piece depicts portraits of loved ones permanently brought together on a sharing platter, the centre piece of the dinner party. The work is a commemoration of everyone I have ever cooked for and how each person has, at some stage, eaten their way into a man’s heart. StevenSales.co.uk

KERRIE JANE STRITTONKerrie Jane Stritton trained as an illustrator at the royal college of art, while practising as an illustrator her clients included Random house, corgi and the guardian. After a career in education at UCCA teaching degree level Kerrie now is embarking on a new practice of ceramics spe-cialising in very fine works in paper clay inspired by the natural word.

XHEMICAL GDNS.My artery is an innate curiosity for the unseen and the impetus to capture such things. As an artist, my intention is to present these ideas subtly within photographs, illustrations, mixed media and words - to attempt to weave within these works a gentle manifestation and close lucidity. My work is often buried in dreams, memories of slight things, views upon the cusp; things I would wish to forget, and other things I cannot seem to remember.

Maya MalfattiMaya Malfatti is a graphic designer and sculptor. Her stone and plaster works emphasize the archi-tectural within the figurative. With other materials, sensuality and physicality are drawn to a point of abstraction. Her more absurd compositions chal-lenge common perception and viewing habits pro-vocatively, daring to question the concept of art. Thus, a refreshing degree of irony and distance towards her own work is expressed. Her latest pieces stem from her work in typography, focusing on the transformation of words, in this case poetry, into two and three-dimensional physical objects.
