SEPTEMBER, 2013 Under the Bell Tower Minding Your Ps and Qs… and Rs (part 2) Last month I proposed that minding ones Ps and Qs applies to churches going through an interim time, and that newsletter I’d offer a series of Ps and Qs worth minding in three parts. I added that a couple of Rs fit well into the mix as well. Last month we considered the importance of paying attention to the balance between patterns and people. Today we’ll look at another pair of Ps: Programs and Prayer. Congregations need to mind the emphasis they place on prayer relative to programs. Programs are essential to the life of any organization, including churches. For example, worship is central to church life. It is a program. Effective worship doesn’t just happen. It requires careful programming. In turn, careful programming requires planning, preparation, and practice. Finally, effective programming inspires people to participate. And yet, even though worship is a program its goal is not to entertain, nor even to inspire popularity. Its goal is to draw us into a communion of prayer. Every act of worship is an expression of prayer. Prayer is any action in which we intentionally turn our minds from our own routines and into the routine of becoming the body of Christ in this place and time. From the moment we enter the church and greet the first person until we audibly respond to the benediction and depart in the strains of the postlude, worship models for us what prayer is. It is our holy occupation. If worship is our model for prayer, then prayer encompasses a lot more than talking at God in private or how we start and end church meetings. Prayerful communion together outside of worship is as necessary for church vitality as talking together is for families outside of family meals. Prayerful communion happens when we get together to read and discuss the Bible, when we couple up with another to visit the sick or homebound, or when we simply get together to listen to and support one another. However, it often happens that during the rest of the week all the meetings needed to maintain the programs of the church threaten to squeeze out opportunities for prayerful communion. We just don’t have the energy to get together for one more event, even if it is for prayer. An unbalanced schedule of meetings to maintain programs can indicate that a church places more emphasis on patterns than people (see last month’s article). Congregations need carefully to reflect on the importance they place on programs relative to prayer. As with worship, it need not be an either/or. Worship is a program to be sure. But it is a prayerful program. As a result, it might contain models for how other kinds of programs can incorporate opportunities for prayer even when the task of the meeting is to “take care of business.” Then, worship’s influence can inspire congregations to imagine ways that opportunities for prayer can be added to the calendar that complement and enhance the other programs of the church. Minding Your Ps and Qs… and Rs (part 2)

Last month I proposed that minding ones Ps and Qs applies to churches going through an interim time, and that newsletter I’d offer a series of Ps and Qs worth minding in three parts.

Next month: Quality and Quantity; Roots and Ruts.

BOARD OF DIACONATE

Seeking only to restore a greater atmosphere of solemnity and Holiness to People’s worship services, the congregation is asked to PLEASE refrain from all loud conversation and take up a countenance of prayerful reflection upon the entrance of the Pastor and Liturgist in front of the sanctuary. Welcoming and reuniting with one another is cherished by all at People’s Church, but we encourage that everyone save their greeting until the appropriate point in the service or after services. Again, we seek solely to make our worship with God as respectful and special as is possible. ---We Thank You for your indulgence.

The Diaconate.

Interim Pastor Search Committee (ISC) Report

25 August 2013

The Interim Select Committee (ISC) convened on 24 February 2013. It was tasked, upon the retirement of

Reverend W. Daniel Griggs (31 January 2013), with finding an Intentional Interim Pastor to help transition

Peoples Church of Dover to a new Call Pastor.

Approved by the congregation at the 20 January 2013 Annual meeting, the ISC members were:

Kathy Hanebutt Robin Hinderer Betsy Stewart

Gerald Rice – Chairperson Keith Kreisher Phyllis Tarburton

Louise Warfield – Secretary

Over four months, the ISC held six meetings, reviewed seven candidate profiles, and interviewed two candidates.

A final recommendation was presented to the Board of Trustees and approved on 19 May 2013. A formal

Covenant was signed on 7 June 2013 and Reverend Dr. Douglas L. Griffin became the Intentional Interim Pastor

of Peoples Church of Dover on 8 July 2013.

Provided below is an approximation of the cost of the Interim Pastor search and placement as well as the

anticipated savings realized since Rev. Griggs retirement. Also, provided is a chronology of the Search process

and the work of the Interim Select Committee.

Archived for the church record is a package containing this report, the Minutes/Agenda/ Documents of each

meeting, letters of the ISC, the ISC Secretary’s communication with candidates, internal committee emails,

emails with UCC Conference advisors, and the profiles of all the candidates.

This concludes a full accounting, and acknowledgment of, the hard work, dedication, and professionalism of each

member of the Interim Pastor Selection Committee. May the Good Lord Bless this work that it further His

Kingdom.

What’s Happening In the Interim Time? On Sunday, September 8, Rev. Dan Schroeder will be with us to preach and to lead in “Blessing

the Interim” a service of officially recognizing the interim ministry relationship between People’s Church

and Rev. Doug Griffin. Rev. Schroeder is our Interim Associate Conference Minister. He has been

offering guidance from the Central Atlantic Conference to People’s Church since Rev. Griggs’

retirement. September 8 is also the Sunday that the Christian Education Board hosts a luncheon

immediately following worship.

Also in September, but more behind the scenes, Rev. Griffin and Richard Merriwether, who

agreed to serve as co-chair of what will eventually become the pastor search committee, are

coordinating efforts to utilize those individuals who volunteered for search committee activities earlier

this year. The first phase of interim activities are directed toward developing an accurate profile of who

People’s Church is now and where it discerns Christ’s spirit guiding it as we look forward to our next

chapter of pastoral leadership. This will take several months and will enlist congregation-wide input

and participation at key junctures. Stay tuned to this new section of People’s to People for news and

information as we approach each new juncture.

Efforts are also underway to coordinate a series of gatherings in October and November for

members to meet in small groups in other members’ homes. The purpose of the gatherings is for Rev.

Griffin to meet the church in more casual settings and to hear what members’ feelings, hopes, and

suggestions are for People’s Church as we move into the interim time. Look for more information in

the October newsletter.

BOARD OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

The board met on August 25th with Doug Griffin, our interim pastor. We have made the following plans and decisions: There will be a BACK TO CHURCH luncheon, hosted by the CE board, after the important installation service for Doug, our interim pastor, on September 8th. We will provide deli sandwich fixings, and the congregation is asked to bring salad, vegetable, or dessert. Please plan to stay for this fellowship opportunity! Sunday School will begin for all children and youth, on Sunday, September 15th, with youth dismissed for class by our pastor. The Adult Learning Opportunity class will begin on October 27th. Doug will lead a session, “UCC 101”, an informative discussion about our denomination and how we “know Jesus”. We will share a simple lunch, at 11 am, followed by the 45 minute class. You will want to be part of this class! Our youth and their families will enjoy a FALL HAYRIDE in November, touring our rural areas. Stay tuned for date and time. Our ANNUAL SPAGHETTI DINNER is planned by Sunday, November 17th, pending the availability of our renowned chefs!

Page 8: Under the Bell Tower Minding Your Ps and Qs… and Rs (part 2)

We are hoping for the education and nurture of all ages in our church family. Plan to join us as we enjoy each other and grow together in God’s love. The board will meet on October 6th, after worship.

BOARD OF MANAGEMENT

Good morning to all, Wish you all well as we begin the fall season at People’s Church. The Board of Management has had many challenges though the summer months that will continue to be addressed as the weeks and months progress. We would like to thank everyone for their support as we have dealt with the many issues of the church this past year. The new sound system has been completed in the sanctuary. The old system was re-purposed and installed in the dining room downstairs so when we have luncheons or meetings we will be able to hear and understand the speakers. If anyone has any concerns about the new systems please speak to one of the BOM members.

As you know, our building is aging and that presents many challenges as we address its needs. Issues include the heating and air conditioning systems, management of surface water outside of the church leaking into the basement (this includes roofing, gutters, sidewalks, outside stairwells and aging brick walls). The bell tower is an ongoing project to maintain the chimes and the physical structure. We have begun to move ahead with replacing the 20 year old carpet in the hallway and offices. We have received bids on replacing our aging computer systems both hardware and software. We have, with the help of Elinor Baker, the church’s webmaster, moved the hosting site for our web page to a new company. We hope this will give us some new flexibilities and options with our connectivity to all the church members. We have been working to sandblast and repaint the radiators in the sanctuary, but because of the slow process and expense, will probably be tabled until next spring.

Stay tuned to bulletin postings and announcements for opportunities to lend a hand to small projects around the church. Ron Zink’s Saturday project days will be resuming in September. Let the BOM know if you are aware of issues we need to address. Again, thanks for all your support.

One last item, one of our BOM members has resigned so we are in desperate need of at least one new member to help us. Five new members would be better. According to our bi-laws we are to have 10 members. We now have 5, and one is out of the state on an extended job related absence. Please join us. There is just too much fun for 5 people to have all to themselves. –

Best regards, Paul Hanebutt
