Nobles and ladies,Spring is here and the days are getting longer. We started April with a great 50’s, 60’s, 70’s

Sahib Unit Spring Sock Hop in the Sahara Lounge/Restaurant. Most everyone dressed up in their favorite oldies outfit. See the pictures of this event in this edition of “The Reporter”. If you were not there, you missed a good time. I want to thank everyone who helped put this on and the units that donated their money and time.

We had a Mini-Ceremonial on March 30th and brought in five new members. Please see Past Potentate Connie Jacobi and High Priest & Prophet Gene Marinelli to bring in your new members.

I’m proud of our parade units: Marshall, Provost Guards, Legion of Honor, Clowns, Model Ts, Venice Keystone Kops, North Port Shrine Club, Hillbilly Shrine Club, Hospital Transportation Roadrunners and Divan. Sahib won “2017 Grand Champion Arcadia Rodeo Parade.” Good job!

Let’s give the Hillbilly Shrine Club a big thank you for donating $12,500 to Sahib Shrine. Clan Raban Ron Johnson presented the check to us.

Bingo is still our SUPER FUNDRAISER and if you can help on Tuesdays, please come in. Summer means many less volunteers available, so if you can, please help.

We have taken a different approach in the kitchen and it has taken a few months to get it back in order. Noble Sam Chavers is volunteering to run the kitchen with one cook. We could use some extra help in the kitchen on Mondays, Wednesdays and the Thursdays Men’s Luncheons and Friday night dinners. If you haven’t noticed, the food has gotten much better. Our hats go off to the kitchen and waiting staff.

Manatee Shrine Club is working with the Pittsburgh Pirates in helping with the concessions’ operations. This is a good way to make some additional money for your unit or club at LECOM Park in Bradenton, Florida. See Noble Jim Smith.

The Sahib Shrine Gun Raffle has about 50 tickets left, at $20 each; remember this is a one-of-a-kind RIFLE with the Sahib 35th Anniversary logo on the stock of the gun or you could win $1,000 in cash. See Chief Executive Aide Bill Athas.

On May 21, at 1:10 p.m., it is Shriners’ Day at the Tampa Bay Rays vs. New York Yankees. See Noble Roger King or me for tickets - we have 47 and they are going fast!

I hope everyone enjoyed their Easter and had the opportunity to be with family. Remember to support your Shrine and keep a child in your heart!

Fraternally Yours,

William “Bill” Balkwill Sahib Potentate 2017

With courage, our Potentate Ill. Sir Bill Balkwill and Divan have put in many hours

in the past few months reviewing our budgeting and revenue programs. Although difficult, with guidance from our Treasurer Wayne Thomas, the change to a new accounting system has disclosed many shortcomings of the accounting program. Now, with a new system, profit and loss can be determined. Projects that are profitable will continue and those that are not, unfortunately, must be stopped as we oversee the revenue needed to meet the obligations of Sahib.

With our decreasing membership, we must review where and what produces revenue. The Divan is striving to manage Sahib as a business

with review of costs and cutting costs where they can be cut. The Potentate and Divan understand that some activities have been part of Sahib for many years, but as time has changed, society is changing. Sahib must change to continue to exist, for the reason of managing Sahib as a business, some difficult decisions concerning activities must be made.

Unfortunately, Sahib does not have the luxury of 2,000 plus members as we did in 2003. As I advised the nobles at the April Stated Meeting the report of membership to the Imperial was approximately 1,000. Only 700 are in good standing for 2017, those members that are in arrears with

Nobles, we want to wish all of you returning to the north a very safe journey. Have a great

summer and we look forward to seeing you in the fall.

What a great (busy) year we are having here at Sahib. As we wind down for the summer, I want to emphasize that Sahib will be open for business. We urge you to attend our events. Attendance at our activities is a major problem for Sahib Shrine.

To succeed, we need you to come out and support your fraternity. Check your calendars for the up and coming events. The opportunities here are many and we hope you are taking advantage of these events. We must keep our Shriners involved with the various opportunities that we have. Please get involved in your clubs and units. It takes a village. Until next month, be kind to one another.

The Shrine is not a building. The Shrine is you, all of you! The Divan works for you. If

we do not know what you need, and what you want, we cannot effectively work. We ask that you communicate with us, and the best way to do that is brother to brother, face to face at the Shrine building or a Shrine function. With positive attitudes and civility, we will ensure that Sahib Shrine continues to survive and thrive. Peace be with you.

This month’s attendance was limited to thirty members due to approximately twenty-five

members working at the baseball game concession at LECOM Park. Next month we should return to over fifty in attendance. The March meeting was a joint one with the ladies in attendance. It was a nice break from our all-male luncheon and we men were on our good behavior. Thanks go out to Noble Ed Cramer, the winner of the 50/50 drawing, for his donation of the $26 award going to the Manatee Shrine Club treasury.

The club social calendar is filling up with an April 25th Marina Jacks luncheon cruise scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon. A signup sheet was made available at the April meeting. A baseball worker’s recognition social is tentatively scheduled for October after the return of our snowbird members. The idea is to recognize the volunteers with a photo program of their ball park activities and a dinner. April was also the month in which our club played the host role at the Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance on Tuesday, April 11. The theme was a “Spring Fling” and the MSC ladies provided the table decorations.

Important MSC news: The MSC Board of Directors has a request for an active MSC member to accept asap the position of 1st V.P. The new 1st V.P. will have the support for 2018 of all the board members including Russ Sexton, as Past President, and the entire board of directors. Please let any of the board members (Nobles Paul Zeissler, Bill Padelford, Ron LeVene, Jim Smith, Connie Jacobi, Jim Fletcher, and Ernie Ryder) know of your interest in volunteering for the 1st V.P. position. This position is vital for the

continued success of our club. At the April 7th meeting, the guest speaker was Wanda Odum, Activities Director of the Florida Masonic Home, located in Pinellas County. She will inform us of the benefits of a retirement in a Masonic Home and the financial requirements to enter the Masonic Home care system. The hot meal entrée at the April meeting was a house salad, chicken fried steak with country gravy, mashed potatoes and chef ’s vegetables. The cold entrée was a spring salad with grilled pineapple and chicken. The dessert was vanilla ice cream with strawberry topping.

Meal reservation options, current and trial method: The current method for making meal reservations is to respond to a meal reservation email sent out to all members by me, Russell Sexton, or contact me at (941) 773-7280. In addition, as a trial method of making meal reservations, I will ask if you always order a hot or cold entrée and plan to attend each monthly meeting; you only need to indicate your meal order once for the entire MSC season. You will only need to respond to monthly meal reservation emails if you plan NOT to be in attendance. If you choose not to make a commitment for the year, please respond to the monthly meal reservation email by the cut-off date which is always the Friday before the meeting. Payment and meal tickets will be at the door. No cancellation later than 72 hours before the luncheon. Please note that you must sign in at the front reservation desk and receive a meal ticket. This requirement is necessary for us to keep a record of the number of meals for which we are charged by Peridia.

The month of March was a very full one for the Venice Shrine Club Kops. The Kops with nine

members along with “Paddy” our infamous pre-World War II paddy wagon motored to Arcadia for their notable Rodeo. All the Kops had a wonderful pancake breakfast at the local Methodist Church. There were nine nobles on the streets of Arcadia. Two drivers, two balloon attendants, four foot patrolmen and one high wheeled patrolman. The question was, who had more fun? The Kops or the locals enjoying the parade. The parade was followed by a delicious lunch that was supplied by Noble Joe Smedley local ranch owner in Arcadia.

March 18 saw a second raid - the RCR pancake breakfast being held at the RCR Recreation Hall in Nokomis. The raiding party consisted of the Kops’ Chief Bill Moore, the Assistant Chief Mattson along with two foot patrolmen with one prisoner in tow. The Pancake Chairman Bill Rogowski was placed under arrest and cuffed to the already captured prisoner. Approximately

eighty folks enjoying the pancakes were subsequently arrested. Charges against the body was for not drinking and most likely not planning to attend the Car Show to be held later in the day. After negotiations between the Chief and a spokesperson representing the arrested party, it was agreed that all would be released if all agreed to begin drinking again and with a further assurance that all would attend the Car Show later in the day. The infamous “Paddy” was available for all Car Show enthusiasts to look over for their inspection.

Nobles, the Kops are always willing to accept new members. The only requirement is membership in the Venice Shrine Club and you are a Kop just by being a member of the club!

The Venice Shrine Club meets at Left Coast Seafood Restaurant in Venice on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Social hour is 11:00 a.m. and Lunch is 12:00 noon. Reservations not required.

Motor Corps Shrine ClubGiles Light (G-man), Secretary, [email protected]

It’s May already. Where did the first four months of the year go? We’ve been riding quite

a bit since the last edition of “The Reporter” and we will be doing more this month. Hopefully on Memorial Day we’ll pause to remember the men and women who died while serving in our nation’s armed forces. So, the Motor Corps, along with others, salute our veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

On Sunday, April 9th, members of the Motor Corps and the Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association supported the Tour de Cure in Lakewood Ranch in support of the American Diabetes Association. This is the third year for this event which has proven to be very popular in the Lakewood Ranch area.

The Florida Association of Shrine Motor Corps (FASMC) will be holding its annual meeting

and competition in Orlando the weekend of May 3 - 7th. The actual motorcycle competitions will take place at the Manheim Florida Auto Auction of Orlando. We are hoping to have several of our members in competition.

The Motor Corps will be making its annual spring pilgrimage to Murphy, North Carolina the weekend of May 18 - 21. We will be riding in the mountains with some beautiful scenery. This is always a fun trip, albeit a long one.

Although it’s only May, in about ten weeks the Motor Corps will be taking over for the Hillbillys during the Thursday night dinners. Instead of the Hillbilly Buffet, the Motor Corps will be serving up their famous burgers, onion rings, and maybe even some battered mushrooms, plus several other items on our menu. More details forthcoming in

their dues are approximately 300. The dues income from those in arrears is not available for the 2017 budget year. There are many out of 300 that have not paid 2016 dues and by Imperial Bylaws, if these nobles are not in good standing by the end of 2017, they must be suspended. Nobles reflect on your position in the membership of Sahib.

As the Potentate and Divan strived to find revenue, it observed the success of the Widow Sons concert projects over the past few years. So, “Shrine LIVE” was created with help of members and volunteers from the community, but was not committed to until now. Now with commitment to this project, local bands will be performing in the Main Hall on Saturday nights with top name nationally known bands coming in at times throughout the year. A committee is established and has responsibility for obtaining top bands that draw people from the area that enjoy country, rock and blues music. Sahib has one of the best halls for music with a bar and restaurant which will produce income by ticket sales with limited food and drink being sold during these performances. Sarasota was known in the past as one of the great music areas in the country, “Shrine LIVE” may help Sarasota return to that recognition. Check out this edition of “The Reporter” and visit www.sahiblive.com for dates and

bands scheduled to perform during May and June. Come and enjoy our local talent at “Shrine LIVE”; looking for the young and those that think young.

A new box office created from First Lady Gail’s project is now located in the atrium which will provide Marylou and Bobby an area to sell tickets during the days they are available. The box office will allow purchases during any day or time of the week by credit card by going to www.sarasotashrinecenter.com. This will allow people wanting to attend activity at Sahib to purchase tickets to attend entertainment provided at Sahib by going to either website.

There will be some bumps as we go into the future, with the help of our nobles and ladies, we will succeed and make Sahib a place for people to gather, create new members and have fun in a safe place in Sarasota. Don’t forget to visit the Sahara Lounge and Restaurant with new items on a new menu. See you around the Shrine and don’t forget the child within.

the next edition of “The Reporter” since there is no July edition.

We have a number of competitions and events on the schedule for the next several months. But, we’ll save that for next month. In the meantime, “hydrate and inflate.” (That’s your body and your tires!)

We have three birthdays and four anniversaries to report this month. Birthdays include Lady Leslie Bock (Skittles) on May 10, Lady Muriel Young (Snow Angel) on the 19th and Scott Steelman (Gray Fox) on the 25th. Anniversaries include Eric Bock (Ironman) and Lady Leslie on the 3rd, Mark deStefano and Lady Kelly Pace on the 4th, Bryan Pullman (Shortcut) and Lady Terri on the 7th and John Hubbard (Hotrod) and Lady Carol on the 24th.

SHRINE UNIT NEWS

As you know, May brings spring flowers and it also means that the snowbirds head north. Of course,

this means that our Clown membership will shrink also. We hope that “Corny”, “Checkers”, and “Gabby” have a safe and happy summer and return soon. You can see all these Clowns in the picture as we all gathered before the Arcadia Rodeo Parade. The parade was short, but the Clowns had a great time amusing all the people along the parade route. It should be noted that our Shrine won the trophy for being the outstanding unit in the parade. We are sorry that we will not be able to perform at the Children’s Parade in Palmetto next month.

Last month I talked about a review of the “Red Sneaker” located in the corner of the jewelry sales counter in our Main Hall. The original idea came from Noble Bob Andrews using a “plaster of shoe” to collect money to purchase canvas shoes for Boston’s Burn Hospital patients. The sneaker was presented to the NESCA membership and it was then accepted by the Shrine membership at the Imperial Session in Atlanta, Georgia in July 1973.

Noble Abe Flacks went to Keds Corporation and sold their leaders and union on the idea of a giant red high-top sneaker. The union agreed to build twelve shoes initially, one for each Shrine region and, eventually, Keds donated over fifty shoes that are still being used by the Sneaker Fund for collection of monies. For many

years, this fund was used to purchase sneakers for the patients in need of sneakers at the many Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The Sneaker Fund has continued over these many years by the International Shrine Clown Association (ISCA) to collect money for our Shriners Hospitals for Children even though patients no longer use a canvas shoe in the hospital. Through the “Red Sneaker” collection and hard work by the Shrine Clowns all over the world, several million dollars have been generated and donated to the Shrine Hospital funds. This is the story of the “Red Sneaker” and the Sahib Clown Unit appreciates your help in our “Red Sneaker” project. Next month our Clowns will be sending our collection to ISCA for distribution to our Shriners Hospitals for Children and once again, the Sahib Clowns say, “thank you” to the Sahib nobles and others for their help in filling our “Red Sneaker”. It should be noted that five of our Sahib Clowns are members of ISCA.

Many of you have seen the Clown calliope in front of Sahib Shriners playing circus music for the patrons as they come and go from the King Pins’ famous Pancake Breakfast. In addition to the calliope, you will often see one of our Clowns at the breakfast entertaining the patrons. We thank “Checkers” Grant and “Corny” Cobb for their service. As I close another month of Clown news, just remember, “it is our Shrine children for whom we are working”.

Oriental BandJim Austin, [email protected]

As briefly mentioned in the April “Reporter”, the Oriental Band entertained the members

of Pleasant Lake Mobile Park at the end of March. It’s the third time we have been invited to play there, and it’s a genuine pleasure to go out there. The folks there are friendly, generous and so very accommodating. They had many places for our group to park (always a problem), ice cream and cake after we ended and a very genuine appreciation for our performance. There were quite a few nobles living in the park; saw several in Fezzes and quite a bunch with unit shirts. We love to play out there.

On other matters, we are still determined to play at Daytona Beach for the Imperial Session the beginning of July. We still don’t know if there is going to be a competition, but we have heard

over the grapevine that a band from Oregon is going to be there, having come about 4,000 miles with their band trailer for the big parade. Wow! Guess we should think about taking ours, after all it’s only about 150 miles and we don’t want folks to think we are pikers - do we?

Floyd, our musical director, has been experimenting with different songs and programs, so whatever comes up, we will be prepared.

Got a question from one of the noble’s wives the other day. She asked if the band ever did anything but win first place in all these competitions. The answer is, we have been awarded second place twice, but we just gave them to the Special Olympics kids, we sure didn’t want them. That’s all folks, give your sweetie a hug and stay healthy till we meet again.

Scottish Riteby Casey A. Fletcher, KCCH, [email protected]

Last month’s missive reminded us that words are symbols for great ideas, concepts and

beliefs. It asserted that we need to be attentive to their meanings so that they retain their usefulness.

Freemasonry offers us many words and language that symbolize great ideas and concepts, such as Justice (May 2014 issue) or Virtue (November 2014 and February 2016 issues). In April, we considered the words “moral” and “morality.”

We considered the views of Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), who asserted morality is determined by reason; Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), who held that morality is based on will; and David Hume (1711-1776) who argued morality is determined by human desires.

Ah, much to think about. But is the matter settled?

In an essay entitled “Where the New Science of Morality Goes Wrong”, philosophers James Davison Hunter and Paul Nedelisky provide some thoughts and ideas that may be worthwhile for a Freemason’s search for the meaning of the word “moral.” (Their essay is a critique of scientism and its limitations.)

They identify three different types of morality: prescriptive, descriptive and instrumental.

Prescriptive morality is grounded in fundamental laws; it directs human behavior based on authoritative rules and values. Generally, prescriptive morality is derived from sacred texts that assert what acts are genuinely right or wrong. Prescriptive morality, without apology, is judgmental. It is morally wrong to kill people for fun. The source of prescriptive morality is something greater and more authoritative than our own judgment.

Descriptive morality is the realm of “social rules and practices” that groups develop to constrain certain kinds of actions or encourage the pursuit of others. Societies or groups develop moral codes of conduct deemed beneficial and helpful – without asserting whether they are “really” right or wrong in an intrinsic sense. Such codes facilitate the functioning of a community. Chivalric codes might be an example of descriptive morality.

Instrumental morality associates results with

means and is akin, perhaps, to the utilitarianism of philosophers such as John Stuart Mill and Jeremy Bentham. An act is “right” if it is instrumental in producing a “good” result. This is perhaps the weakest of the types, but is important to recognize it so to distinguish it from the other two.

As Freemasons, we first entered the Lodge with some sense of prescriptive morality. We rely on (our interpretation of) the Volume of Sacred Law and, hopefully, return to it often as the “rule and guide” to our conduct. Our ritual references the VSL often and helps us define or recognize morality in a prescriptive sense.

Freemasonry seems to concern itself most with descriptive morality; our work is replete with “valuable instruction” regarding social and moral codes that promote and enhance harmony in society. The 7th Degree, Provost and Judge, and the 11th Degree, Elu of the Twelve, teach us much about demonstrating Justice in our lives; emulating impartiality and disinterestedness. But neither degree ever defines Justice prescriptively; they only describe how we should behave for the betterment of society.

Morality. The word symbolizes a great idea and thought. We should not utter it casually without examining that which it symbolizes. Exploring its origin (whether from reason, will or passion, or otherwise) and its type (prescriptive, descriptive or instrumental, or otherwise) can guide our steps in our search for enlightenment, Light and wisdom.

The search continues at the next Scottish Rite on October 21st and 28th. Petitions are available at http://tampascottishrite.org.

The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in Tampa on the 2nd Monday of each month. Dinner is served at 5:45 p.m. and the regular meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. At our May 8th meeting, Brother Joseph Gonzalez, 32nd Degree KCCH will present an educational program.

Casey Fletcher is Past Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6 in Bartow, Florida. He writes about whatever he has read during the previous month and observes that these articles can be derived from unlikely sources. He does not read Sports Illustrated.

For several years, Sahib Shriners had what was referred to as an “Angel Fund’ to assist nobles who were unable to pay their dues because of health, financial or age related issues. The “Angel Fund” remitted the necessary funds to keep them as current members, and to avoid suspension due to non-payment of Shrine dues.

This fund has been fully exhausted and there is no place in our budget to replenish the fund. This is where you can lend a helping hand to a fellow Shrine Mason,

if he is in good standing within his Blue Lodge. For your contribution of $35, you can keep one

delinquent member from being removed from our membership rolls for another year pending his status as a Master Mason. You can personally select a member from the current delinquent list, or we will do it for you.

Please remember these nobles in need of a helping hand. Stop by the office and be responsible for keeping a fellow Shriner on the active list.

Sar-I Court No. 79 - LOSNAby Carol Hart, High Priestess, [email protected]

Nyla Temple No. 152by Katherine A. Rodd, Queen, [email protected]

We had a beautiful Installation. It was so nice to see a blanket of color. Each officer

wore their favorite color for the ceremony. We look to have a fun-filled year with some new twists along the way. Stay tuned to our reports that will interest you. We are always looking to increase our membership and wish to see some of our seasoned members attending session. For additional information about Daughters of the

Nile, please email me at [email protected] or phone me at (941) 776-0937.

Our Installation is over and the new officers are ready to get to work. Thank you to

everyone that attended and helped with the preparation and clean-up. Although Illustrious Sir Bill Balkwill was unable to attend due to other commitments, we know how busy he is, and want to thank him for sending Assistant Rabban Bruce Porter in his place. Each of our units performed their new skits for everyone to enjoy; they were: Songbirds led by Lady Marian Cox, Oriental Dancers led by PHP Lady Nydia Pease, Clowns led by Lady Marjorie Haab, Merrie Makers led by Lady Ginny Hochroth, and Klassy Kickers led by PHP Lady Mary Nell Fletcher. They were spectacular! If any of these units sound interesting to you, please see our members for a petition and come join us for fun, fellowship and fraternity. There are always petitions in the desk drawer outside of the Sahib Office.

The new officers are all studying their new parts and we would like to invite any members that haven’t been to Court for a while to come and check us out. If any ladies are unable to attend due to transportation issues, call us and we will try to find someone in your area for you to ride with.

We soon will be headed to Sandusky, Ohio for our 103rd Grand Council Session at Kalahari Resorts and Conventions Water Park. Can’t wait to see old friends and meet new ones. This is our annual get together for all the sixty-eight Courts

located in the Continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii and Canada. Just imagine the fun when that many women get together, to learn, shop and participate in our Grand Installation. As our Grand High Priestess Lady Diana Schmitz mentioned on her visit, “Did I mention the candy shop?” Can’t wait to report on this when we return.

Over the next few months I will feature each of our units and social clubs to give you an idea of all we do.

Our Hospital Sewing Workshop is a group of ladies that meet on the fourth Thursday of the month and have been sewing items for use at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Tampa, Chicago, Springfield and Twin Cities led by PHP Lady LaVerne Mims. Last year they sent 309 items to these hospitals. You don’t need to be able to sew as there are many other jobs of painting squares, cutting out patterns, and yes, we even have ladies who enjoy ironing. This group loves to make quilts, hats, gloves and covers for the casts that some children require. We have sewing machines, sergers and all the material and supplies needed to complete the projects. Does this sound like something you would enjoy?

As you can see, our ladies are always on the go and are very busy doing many projects for the children. Come join our ladies and be part of our great Court.

Shriners Hospitals for ChildrenCollection Boxes

What are they?A plastic cube with a slot in the top.

What are the boxes for?To help collect donations, money for our Shriners Hospitals for Children to help relieve the pressure from the Hospital Days Fund Drive.

Where are the boxes to be?In any store or business, preferably near a cash register. Within eyesight of customers making it easy for them to put their change in the box.

When are the boxes to be used? All year round, so our friends can donate small amounts of cash at any time.

As most of you know, many businesses have some kind of collection boxes on their counters, so why not one of ours?

Call the Sahib Office at 366-4449if you can arrange a placement.

Pull Tabs for Shriners HospitalsThe Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donating aluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As of January 31, 2017, they have collected 113,835 lbs., for a total of $61,166.16 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa.

Call: Marylou Ellis (941) 484-0089 or Chickie Johnson (941) 228-1855

Help us collect TABS! It’s easy and it’s fun!Put out a milk jug at every picnic or party!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS

1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete cans would require a great deal more storage space. You should go ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in the dumpster behind Sahib.

2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267.3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds

worth.4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs are

delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit loca-tion) and then taken to the recycling center. The money netted from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children.

If you’re a noble of the Shrine searching

for brotherhood and camaraderie,

remember that Sahib Shrine is

yours. Find your way and enjoy your
