Undergraduate Degree Planner Advisor Guide
The Degree Planner is a tool to help students select courses which will meet their program requirements in a timely manner. As an advisor, the Degree Planner allows you to review and approve or decline a student’s plan. To begin using the Degree Planner, log in to Howdy, click on the Advising tab and navigate to the Degree Evaluation channel:

What is the Degree Planner?
Clicking Undergraduate Degree Plan Approvals will open a page displaying all pending plans submitted by students within your department or college.
Find the plan you wish to review and click the View Degree Plan button located on the right to view the student’s plan.

An overview of the student’s plan will appear.
Degree Plan Overview:
Notice that the status is listed as “Submitted to Advisor.”
To view the student’s degree plan, make sure the desired program is selected and click “Continue to Degree Plan.”

Degree Evaluation Tab:Once you have selected the student’s program, you will be presented with the Degree Planner tab set. By default, you will be placed on the Degree Evaluation tab. The Degree Evaluation tab allows you to evaluate the courses a student has planned to complete their degree. You should review each area to determine which requirements are still lacking from the student’s plan.

Click on the area names to expand and contract the program areas.
A legend at the end of the degree evaluation explains the different “source” codes
used in the evaluation.
The text next to the requirements identifies the courses which
can be taken. Minimum grade requirements are also listed.

When an area has incomplete requirements, “Not Met” appears
next to the area description.
The Progress Bars will help you quickly determine which areas require your attention.

If the student’s plan is acceptable, you may add a comment and then click the “Approve” button. This will unlock the student’s plan, however, the student may have another plan for an additional academic program awaiting approval.

From the Approval tab, you will be able to see the status of all of the selected student’s submitted plans.
Approval Tab:
Once the student’s plan has been approved, a PDF icon will appear in the Archive column.
Click the icon to view a PDF of the student’s plan.Clicking on the sticky-note icon will display a comment associated with the submitted plan.

If the student’s plan is not acceptable, indicate the reason in the comments section and click “Decline.” This will unlock their plan and allow the student to make modifications before resubmitting it for approval.

If you decline the student’s plan, the status of the submitted plan will be listed as “Declined” under the Approval tab.

Viewing the Plan as a PDF:
A page with an option labeled “view pdf file” will appear. Clicking the button will open a PDF file depicting the state of the plan at the time of approval.

View Plan Tab:
The View Plan tab provides an easy way to view a current version of a student’s planned courses by semester even before the student submits the plan for approval. The “Term Taken” column allows you to see when the student took courses in their plan.

PreReq Check Tab:
The PreReq Check tab displays all courses added to a plan that do not meet their prerequisites. The Prerequisites column lists the course(s) the current plan lacks for the initial courses to be valid. When a prerequisite allows a concurrency (Concurrency: Y), the pre-requisite course may be taken at the same time as the planned course.

Course History Tab:The Course History tab allows you to view when a specific course has been offered within the past two years. The semesters in which the course has been taught are displayed. Each term listing includes the number of sections offered, previous instructor and the number of enrolled students for the course.
Enter a course to view past course offerings.
Click on a semester to expand and view the sections offered.

Curriculum Info Tab:On the Curriculum Info tab, the selected student’s current curriculum information is displayed. If the student is an entry-level or double-degree student, a button at the bottom of this tab allows you to view their planned courses in a different degree program.
Click here to select a different program for the degree evaluation. This option is not available to students who are pursuing only one degree or who are in degree-granting programs.

Links Tab:Useful links are provided on the Links tab which may help you in better assisting students with their degree plan. Each link will open in a new browser window.

Student Degree Plan Progress by Program:
After following the Undergraduate Degree Plan Status link, navigate to the Campus and Major you wish to view and then
click “Show on Screen” to display a list of students in that major.
If from the Degree Evaluation channel you select Undergraduate Degree Plan Status, you will be able to view
the degree plan status for each student in a given major.
If you return to the Degree Evaluation channel on the Advising tab and select Undergraduate Degree Plan Approvals once
more, the plan you just approved will not be listed.

The screen will populate with students matching your selected criteria:
Student Degree Plan Progress by Program (cont.):
If a student’s plan has been submitted, you may click “Degree Plan” to view the submitted plan.
Each student’s degree plan will have a status of Plan Not Submitted, Approval Pending, Advisor Approved, Advisor Declined, or Self-approved.
