introduction

Dear reader,

The following is a selection of the works I’ve done during the three and a half years of my architecture bachelor at the Technical University Delft. Already as a child I had a drive to realise my designs, to make my dreams become real. On the picture at the left you see the summer house I designed and built for myself, at the age of ten, using a discarded boarden kitchen floor of my parents house.

For me architecture is about the process of transformation. Transforming an abstract idea into real, organized, material. From the start of my studies I was eager to work in the real world instead of doing virtual “school projects”. I was lucky to be invited by one of my teachers to work part time in his architecture office. The many things I learned during this internship made it possible to start my own practice “unknown architects” with Daan Vulkers, a fellow student. The selection in this portfolio is a combination of a broad range of projects; from interior renovation and conceptual stage design to the public building. By this selection I would like to show my possibilities and interests in all these aspects of architecture and design.

pied à terre

A married couple asked us to make a design proposal for the renovation of their 17th century house in the historic city centre of Leiden into a pied à terre and a small office.

All the non-authentic parts of this monument, like partition walls and sus-pended ceilings, were removed to bring back the authentic character and spatial clarity. In this relatively small house three fixed multifunctional furni-ture elements were added.

The ground floor functions as office and second bedroom. One bamboo furniture element incorporates storage space and a platform, covering a guest bed which can be pulled out. An important wish of the client was to make the kitchen ‘’the heart of the house’’ , a place where all essential activities of living, like cooking, eating, meeting, talking and reading, could come together. This was translated in two kitchen elements, made out of bleached walnut wood. The central element includes a table, kitchen dress-er and a fixed bench that shields the stairwell and provides the best lines of sight to the outside.

On the second floor we added one small dresser made of bamboo shield-ing the stairwell and providing a place to sit under the dormer. The walls are finished with white clay plaster. The uncovered ceilings are intentionally kept as we found them and form a contrast with the new.

The city of Rotterdam is planning to develop a former industrial harbour, Merwe- Vierhavens, into a residential area. The task was to design a cultural centre with a grand café, theatre, offices and rehearsal spaces, while including an existing industrial building. At the moment the adjacent neighborhood is neglected, deals with social problems and is quite poor. With my design I aimed to improve this situa-tion. Because most of the inhabitants of the surrounding neighborhoods are not primary interested in theatre I decided to focus with my design on the public space. A footbridge crosses the building and connects the poor neighborhood with a park behind the theatre.

The heart of the building is a public square connected with the urban fabric by different breakthroughs in the building volume. As a result of the break-throughs the buildings volume is downscaled to a complex of different small building volumes.

Benches are cut out of the facade to make the skin of the building not only protecting the people inside but also offering a comfortable protected space to rest for the people passing by.

V-House

This single family house is a reinterpretation of the typical dutch house. The program requires much more space on the ground floor in comparison to the first floor. Therefore the ground floor serves as pedestal for the first floor which got the typical shape of a dutch house.

The whole exterior is clad in one material to sharpen the shape of the vol-ume.

As an intern I was responsable for execution drawings for the exterior and the interior. Since the house is clad in one material it was important to make the slates fit well on the walls and roof. My task was to adjust the plans, sec-tions and elevations to make this possible.

For the interior I drew wall elevations and placed carefully the switches and sockets taking into account not only practical issues but also esthetic demands. I was also responsible for choosing and ordering of the plumbing and made wall elevations to make clear the exact placing of these elements and the tiles as well.

The house was completed in september 2011 and as you can see in the pictures the slates fit very well!

exhibition installation

On the occasion of an art exhibition in a cultural centre in Prague the client invited designers and architects to make a design proposal for the interior of a gallery space. In this space art would be exhibited during the day and par-ties and concerts would be held at night.

Unknown architects proposed a design consisting of one element that could serve both purposes of the space: gallery interior and party venue. They designed a seating element with an integrated light. By hanging these ele-ments from the ceiling with a cable and fixing one end to the element and the other to a counterweight a flexibel system was created.

A system that could function both as light during the parties at night and as furniture for the visitors to comfortably watch the exhibition during the day. The cladding of the elements provides a playfull scenery for the parties.

The client was satisfied with our design and decided to raise the budget for the realization of our proposal to make the installation permanent instead of temporary.

Sukkah

This Sukkah, a temporary structure for celebrating the Jewish Sukkot Festival, balances on the border between heaven and earth, past and future.

We have created a simple structure by using one single element, a repetitive timber frame that functions as the structure and the skin and at the same time creates the volume. The rigorous repetition of these frames generates an expressive interaction between shadow and light. The frames are a filter that provide the visitor with shelter from the surroundings and at the same time emphasizes the contact with the sky above.

The metamorphosing volume is derived from the program; an entrance, a space for eating, sleeping and conversation, and a window that provides a different view of the world. The volume presents the Sukkah with a contemporary appearance and simultaneously generates a reproduction of the changing times. Capturing movement through a series of images like a stroboscopic photograph, the Sukkah seeks to explain that it’s not the times that are changing but the components that make changes in time.

The metropolitan area of New York will provide all the building materials. The Sukkah shall be constructed of timber found as waste and recycled building materials.

We were asked by the Canja Ensemble to design a scenery for a performance in ‘t Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam. Normally the ensemble likes to perform in a homely or intimate atmosphere and strengthen their interaction with the audience. In a large venue like the Muziekgebouw aan ´t IJ this is hardly possible. So for us was left the task to design - with the smallest resources - a decor that would make this interac-tion possible.

We decided to construct the whole decor of the program booklets - a4´s - to minimize the cost of the decor. We built a wall of these programs that stretched out over nearly the whole width of the podium. Instead of placing this decor behind the artist we decide to place the decor between the artist and the spectator and so draw a barrier between them. By placing the decor in front of the musicians we try to make the barrier between performer and spectator - that we think is always there - visible.

After entering the venue the audience has to come up to the podium and take a piece of the decor - the program - before returning to their seat. In this proces the audience helps taking away the barrier between them and the performer and shapes the decor itself.

The remaining form is the result of the action of the audience and focusses the view of the spectator on to the ensemble.

logo for DoorZigt B.V.

This logo is developed for DoorZigt B.V., a consulatancy company contributing as an independent consultant to the improvement of the quality of rail transport.

The logo is assembled of four generic elements; train tracks, as you can see in the bottom picture. A majority of these train track-elements incorporates railway points. These points visualise the relevance of a consultancy company like DoorZigt. With their advice the client can make the right decision, can take the right direction at the railway point.

logo for Seál

For Seál, a tea garden and small restaurant, I’ve developed this logo. The name of this enterprise is derived from the Irish word “seál” wich means “shalw”. The tea garden and restaurant are located on a small Irish island in the Atlantic Ocean.

This island is completely covered with old stone walls fencing the small meadows. I used an aerial photograph and used the pattern of walls and meadows to make the logo. By erasing most of the meadows the name Seál is made visible.

music

Before I started my architecture studies at the Technical University in Delft I studied violoncello (classical music) at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague and the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Before starting with the last year of the bachelors I decided to quit and study architecture.

Why? Thats a simple question but difficult to answer. For me music is the most abstract of all the arts. Because it’s a performing art, music is only there when you play. At the moment you stop playing there is just the memory. This character of music is both fascinating and frustrating.

As an architect we can work towards a product. When a design has been built we can move on without losing the result of our effort. Because we materialize our ideas we can bring our inside world to the outside where it can manifest itself independantly from it’s creator. For me, that’s a relief.

I still play the cello, with even more fun then ever before. I think I found the right balance in between architecture and music, materializing and dematerializing, collecting and giving away.

Since a few years I play in a Turkish ensemble, I contributed to recordings of albums of David Guetta, Rihanna, played in gigantic soccer stadiums and earned my vacation by making music in the streets of Italy.
