IASP and Areas of Innovation
• In 2012 IASP opened its doors to Areas of Innovation:
Projects that share many objectives with STPsWork with similar elements and toolsYet are different in a number of aspects

STPs at a glance
• Designated areas• With a dedicated and specific
management• To host some types of companies (and
help the creation of new ones)• Supporting their growth and
competitiveness• Via added-value services and
connections to Universities

The area
• Size of the area does not define an AI• Some AIs are like big STPs
Poznan, Poland | 20th May 2015
Date of creation
• Most AIs created in the 2000s• The AI concept follows the STP
concept

Staff
• In terms of staff compared to STPs, AIs tend to be on the upper side of the scale.
• Average STP staff: 14

Resident companies
In terms of resident companies, the bigger size of AIs compared to STPs implies:• A looser relation between firms and AI managers• “Head counting” of companies becomes more complex
in AIs

The “geography” of AIs and STPs
• AIs: in pre-existing developed locations.
• STPs: in empty green field sites that need to be built and populated.
There are exceptions in both cases
• The property/facilities management has more importance in STPs.
Poznan, Poland | 20th May 2015
Mission and appointment
• Common mission to STPs and AIs: economic development through technology/innovation.
Who assigns these tasks?
• STPs: external appointment (appointed by govs., etc.)
• AIs: external appointment but also self appointment

Hybrid use of space
• From working environments to living-playing-working ones.
• Coexistence of businesses and people.• Recovering and expanding an old concept:
cross fertilisation• A new dimension

Integration•Businesses•Educational centres•Residential areas•Service zones
within a spatial unit

Some STP features
• Outside cities / car-dependent
• Low density development
• Rigid norms regulating the use of the land
• Only ‘working areas’
• Lifeless for 2/3 of the day
in 1991!
From my paper: “From STPs to Learning Villages”IASP World Conference 2001 | Bilbao - Spain
Poznan, Poland | 20th May 2015
The new Learning Villages can be “meaningful units” of the global society: global but locally-rooted, inhabited by global citizens, yet keeping solid marks of identity.
This new learning villages could give birth to “globapolitans with roots”
From my paper: “From STPs to Learning Villages”IASP World Conference 2001 | Bilbao - Spain

These new spaces may be an interesting solution for the further development of older cities

The “living” dimension
• The residential areas and the leisure or cultural spaces/facilities may or may not be managed by the AI management team.
• But they are an important element of the whole area, which exert a great influence, and must be always taken into account.
• The AI management team should, in any case, work for correct hybridisation (integration of all the elements).
Poznan, Poland | 20th May 2015
A way to look at it
AI managers are applying
STP formulas and mechanisms
to a different kind of space.
Poznan, Poland | 20th May 2015
5 initial conclusions
AIs and STPs have a lot in common
AIs take the STP concept to another level
AIs often apply STP ideas to pre-existing locations/communities
AIs sometimes apply STP strategies to revitalise urban areas
Gathering STPs and AIs in a common global network makes sense

Thank You.
