It’s the traits—kindness, resilience, generosity, loyalty—that make you who you are. Sometimes all we see are our perceived weaknesses or limitations, or we let the words that describe our physical selves (like hair color or pants size) define us. But we are all more than curly hair or freckles or straight teeth.

How it helps: Recognizing our personal strengths—and tapping into them—may increase happiness and reduce depression. In one study, people who identified their unique attribute and used it in a new way every day found longer-lasting happiness than those who simply

journaled about happy memories. Science has also shown that happier people make healthier choices: engaging in fewer unhealthy behaviors, being more active, sleeping better and longer, and eating more nutritious foods.

WHAT TO DO: USE YOUR SUPERPOWER!Recognizing and engaging our strengths can enhance them and help us use them. Use the three Ds to awaken the superpower inside you.

THIS WEEK’S FOLLOW-UP Identify a personal strength you’d like to enhance and describe how you will use it at least once each day this week in a new and different way. At the end of the week, debrief: what you did, how you did it, and what you learned.

SUPERPOWER?What’s Your

DEFINE. Think about your strong points and what comes naturally to you and write down a strength you’d like to use this week. For example: curiosity, honesty, humor. (For help in identifying character strengths, check out viacharacter.org)

DESCRIBE. Describe how you’ll use that strength in a new way. (If you choose curiosity, for instance, you might go to a new restaurant or try Zumba®.)

DEBRIEF. Afterward, write in detail what you did, and when and where you did it. Note how you felt and what you learned.

Off heat, coat a grill rack with cooking spray. Preheat grill to high heat. • Place watermelon on heated grill; cook 10-20 seconds on each side until lightly charred. • In a medium bowl, toss arugula with oil; season with salt and pepper. • Place a watermelon slice on a small plate and sprinkle with 2 Tbsp cheese; top with another watermelon slice. Place 1/2 cup arugula on top and drizzle with 2 tsp balsamic glaze; sprinkle with 2 tsp pumpkin seeds. Repeat with remaining ingredients to make 4 salads. • Yields 1 salad per serving.
