ICID
The International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) established in 1950 as a Scientific, Technical and Voluntary International Organization, presently counting 108 member countries.
The Commission is dedicated to enhancing the worldwide supply of food and fibre for all people by improving water and land management and the productivity of irrigated and drained lands through appropriate management of water, environment and application of irrigation, drainage and flood management techniques.
The continuing food crisis and unstable food prices Lack of investments in agriculture and water Population growth Competition from other water users Climate variability – floods and droughts Lack of water storage capacity Demands for energy and alternative fuels Changing dietary patterns Weak institutional capacity Weakened applied research and technology transfer capabilities Environmental and water quality degradation

Competition from other water users
Globally some 71% of the world’s fresh water resources are diverted to agriculture, which are considered to be too much by the public opinion.
FOOD PRODUCTION NEEDS TO DOUBLE OVER THE NEXT 25 YEARS TO MEET POPULATION DEMANDS
UNDER-INVESTMENT IN R&D, TECH TRANSFER AND CAPACITY BUILDING
• Drought and water scarcity; • Groundwater protection and management;• Low quality waters and wastewater reuse for irrigation;• Water harvesting and storage;• Drainage, and waterlogging and salinity control;• Lowlands development• On- farm water management and water use efficiency; • Energy and sedimentation control.
