Executive Summary

Nicholas Yunge-Bateman was employed by the Peterborough Examiner from 1954 through January 1965 as both a reporter and photographer. He worked as a staff photographer from December1959 through the end of his employment period, and was the first Examiner employee to receive recognition for his photography in the newspaper. While employed as a staff photographer, Mr. Yunge-Bateman created a collection of 15,000 photographic negatives, primarily in 4”x5” format, covering December 1959 through January 1965 only. The work is generally of high quality, and the negatives were preserved by the photographer in individual glassine envelopes with the date and photograph number indicated. The numbering system was year (one digit); month (two digits); assignment number (up to three digits); hyphen; photograph number within the assignment (up to three digits). The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman sous-fonds has been housed in 14 Hollinger reinforced acid-free boxes each holding over 1,000 negatives.

Mr. Yunge-Bateman’s photographs have been housed at the Trent Valley Archives in Peterborough, Ontario since December of 2011. Little organization of the collection exists, making it difficult for researchers and historians to find specific photographs. To provide easy access, a finding aid for the year 1960 was created in accordance with international archival standards of respect des fonds under the Rules of Archival Description, a set of rules governing the description and creation of finding aids to facilitate research within archives. The sous-fonds has been arranged in the order developed by the photographer; Mr. Yunge-Bateman’s systemic chronological approach ensured easy access and clear reference numbers.

The present project aimed to recreate the information surrounding the context of the photographs, and thereby make the sous-fonds accessible in a manner other than the chronological route. The Trent Valley Archives wanted archival controls including a description of the sous-fonds, a scope and content report, and a file listing. I undertook to do as complete a report as possible on ten percent of the negatives in the first complete year of the sous-fond, 1960, with the hope of characterizing the range of events undertaken by Mr. Yunge-Bateman.

Acknowledgements

The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman project would not have been possible without the help of

many people. Firstly, I would like to express many thanks to Dr. Elwood Jones of the Trent

Valley Archives, who accommodated me these past eight months and answered all my

questions with enthusiasm, assurance, and patience. I appreciate your flexibility and willingness

to attend the TVA on your days off to allow me access to the vast iconographic collection at the

root of this amazing project. I would like to extend further thanks to Heather Landry, also with

the Trent Valley Archives, for being willing to supervise my work and answer my questions

when Elwood was unavailable. The generosity and kindness I received by the TVA staff was

more than I could have ever asked for, and the knowledge I gathered through the staff at this

incredible establishment will stay with me forever.

Secondly, I would like to thank Marjorie McDonald from the Trent Center for

Community Based Education (TCCBE) for organizing my spot with the Trent Valley Archives. You

helped design a project that met the needs of the TVA, Trent University’s Forensic Science

program, as well as my personal interests. The NYB project would not have existed without the

effort you put in; not only in its design, but also in introducing me to Elwood and opening my

eyes to what the project could offer me. Thank you.

I would like to thank John Marris, also from the TCCBE. From day one you were

enthusiastic to help in any way you could. I appreciate all the time you set aside to read and

edit my drafts, and to talk about the project. Not only did you organize my spot in the

Community Innovation Forum, but provided not only me, but all my classmates with guidelines

and feedback on our poster design and layout for the Forum. Thank you for expressing a

Introduction

The Project

Nicholas Yunge-Bateman was born September 2, 1929 in Lancashire, England. He was

employed at the Peterborough Examiner from 1954 as both a reporter and photographer and

from December 1959 as the Examiner’s first full-time staff photographer who received credit

for his photographs in the newspaper (2). Throughout his career, he captured landscapes,

townscapes, and citizens in their daily routines, as well as special, sporting, and school events.

Collectively, these photographs provide windows into life in the City. Upon leaving his position

with the Examiner at the end of January 1965, Mr. Yunge-Bateman moved to Port McNeill in

West Vancouver British Columbia where he owned North Island Camera (2, 3). Sadly, he passed

away on June 2, 2014 at the age of 84 as the result of a stroke (4); however his collection of

photographs is proudly housed at the Trent Valley Archives (TVA) on Carnegie Avenue in

Peterborough, Ontario.

Throughout Mr. Yunge-Bateman’s six years employment as a staff photographer, he

compiled over 15,000 photographs, which have become known as the Nicholas Yunge-Bateman

(NYB) collection, a sous-fonds of the Peterborough Examiner archive. The NYB collection was

passed from the Peterborough Examiner, a daily local newspaper company, to the Trent Valley

Archives in December 2011 (5). Founded in 1989, the TVA promotes and studies local and

family histories in the community of Peterborough by organizing pub tours, ghost, heritage, and

cemetery walks, and gives presentations to countless City organizations (5). The TVA strives to

preserve, identity, and care for archival material including photographs, newspapers, and public

records.

7

Page 9: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

The purpose of the present project is to assist the TVA to understand and document the

iconographic collection. When properly documented, analyzed, and cross-listed, a finding aid

will be created following the Rules for Archival Description (RAD) to provide historians and

researchers a user-friendly navigation tool. The present project is an opportunity for the TVA

and citizens of Peterborough to better understand Mr. Yunge-Bateman himself, and to explore

several cultural and anthropological themes relating to the collection. These themes include the

development of photographic technology during the 1960s, the professional dynamic of staff

photographers, and newspaper photography as a lens of shaping a community versus a

medium for allowing a community to tell its own story.

Due to the large size of the collection, the photographs captured during Mr. Yunge-

Bateman’s first full year as a staff photographer (1960) will be the focus of the present project.

The 1960 sous-fonds will be preserved and documented to allow historians and researchers

alike to learn about Peterborough with the help of visual aids. The project is designed to

address three research questions. The first question addresses what can be learned about

Peterborough during this one year. Secondly, whether the Examiner, and by extension the

community, was well served by Mr. Yunge-Bateman’s position within the Examiner. The final

research question asks why some events and stories are represented with disproportionately

large collections of photographs. The TVA will be provided with a finding aid for the sous-fonds,

and a written report with an analysis of the photographs contained therein. Additionally, the

deliverables include a written report exploring the life and work of the photographer, and a

template model to be used for the preservation and documentation of the remainder of the

NYB collection.

8

Page 10: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

Previously Completed Research

Very little research has been done as of yet on Mr. Yunge-Bateman or the NYB

collection. A telephone interview was conducted with the photographer in early 2014 by Karen

Hicks, a TVA employee. This provided a brief biography of Mr. Yunge-Bateman, and it was learnt

that he held in his possession a journal describing the context of his photographs. Due to his

passing, the TVA has been unable to inquire about the contents of the journal or the possibility

of having the journal donated to the collection.

Research that has been completed includes a brief description of all the negatives in the

whole collection as completed by TVA volunteers. These descriptions are currently stored in a

binder and volunteers have been transferring them to a Microsoft Excel file on the TVA

computers. I will be expanding upon these brief descriptions for the present project. The

descriptions will be utilized in the creation of the finding aid. Finding aids from other TVA

collections have been created and will be used as a template and amended where necessary to

fit the NYB sous-fonds.

Methods

Rules for Archival Description

RAD is a set of instructions governing the description of an archive and the creation of a

finding aid to provide a consistent and common foundation for all material within a fonds. This

set of rules states that respect des fonds is very important for the maintenance of archival

integrity. To promote an archives’ accessibility, archival description identifies and explains the

content and context of the material, including chain of custody, and circumstances of creation

and use (6).

RAD details the major parts of the finding aid document should include: title, date of

creation, physical description, administrative history, biographical sketch, custodial history,

scope and content, and notes. The physical description depicts the overall size and general

content of the material; i.e. ca. 15,000 photographic negatives, 15 cubic feet. The

administrative history provides information relating to the authority and function of the

archive, while the biographical sketch gives an account of content and a history of the creator.

Custodial history provides information on all agencies or persons that have had legal control of

the archive. The scope and content outlines the structure of the archive including organization

and classification, as well as the period of time covered in the archive and the geographical area

to which it pertains. Finally, notes can contain information about the physical condition of the

materials and any other information worthy of mention (6).

The present project consists of three parts: the preservation of the collection, the

analysis and description of the negatives, and the creation of the finding aid.

10

Page 12: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

Preservation of the negatives

1- Remove each negative from its glassine envelope and examine the negative for any

aspects of poor quality including, but not limited to, the flaking of emulsion, water

damage, or the envelope sticking to the negative. In the NYB collection the latter two

causes of poor quality are common, as the negatives were housed in the basement of

the Examiner where it was affected by the 2004 Peterborough flood.

2- If the negative cannot be removed from the envelope because they have adhered

together, carefully tear the envelope and take it off the negative. Be sure not to damage

the negative, or the photographic code on the envelope.

3- Mr. Yunge-Bateman numbered all his photographs sequentially based on date and

Examiner assignment, and maintaining the numbering system maintains the integrity of

the collection. The first digit in the code represents the year and indicates the last digit

of a four digit year; i.e. 1960 is represented by 0. The second and third digits represent

the month, from 01 indicating January to 12 indicating December. The following two to

three digits indicate the assignment within the month. 01 therefore represents the first

assignment the photographer completed in a given month. The number after the

hyphen is used to indicate the sequence in which the photographs within an assignment

were captured. The numbering system is to be maintained; however in cases where Mr.

Yunge-Bateman has more than one image in a single glassine envelope, subsequent

negatives are to be labelled (2), etc.

4- Obtain a new glassine envelope and copy the photographic code onto it. Glassine

envelopes are used for three primary reasons: they are inert, non-acidic, and

11

Page 13: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

translucent which protects the negatives from light while still allowing the opportunity

to see through them. The photographic code used by the original photographer, Mr.

Yunge-Bateman, is utilized to maintain archival integrity.

5- Envelopes containing damaged images (i.e. emulsion is coming off, glassine envelope

has adhered to the negative, or the emulsion is discoloured) are to be marked ‘CC’

(check condition) to highlight that they need additional care for preservation.

6- Any paper found within the envelope alongside the negative should be removed and

paper-clipped to the outside of the envelope. These papers need to be removed

because acid in the paper reacts with the emulsion causing discolouration, but must

remain with the corresponding negative for proper documentation and to uphold the

integrity of the collection.

7- Make notes regarding which envelopes required replacement, which photographs were

marked ‘CC’, and which negatives are missing from the collection. The following works

well;

Envelopes Requiring Replacement

Check Condition Missing Negatives

002126002128-2, 002128-5 002128-3, 002128-4 002128-1002129-1 through 002129-2 002129-200301-5

The full preservation document can be viewed in Appendix 1.

Description of the negatives

1- Remove the negative from its envelope and place it on a light table. This provides a

contrast between the dark and light spaces for ease of viewing photographic details.

12

Page 14: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

Multiple negatives may be placed on the light table at the same time, provided the

images are returned to the correct envelope to keep the photographs in chronological

order.

2- Describe the images in as much detail as possible. Providing sex and a general age

estimate of people (young, middle aged, elderly, etc.), the number of people,

background landmarks, and writing on clothing, documents, and any visible signs may

help someone find a specific photograph they are seeking at a later date.

3- One in every ten assignments for the year 1960 is described in full. An assignment is a

group of photographs taken at one time; the last two or three digits preceding the

hyphen in the number code represents the assignment number. One in ten has been

decided upon because, even with the focus on a single year, the collection is quite large,

and describing every negative was not realistic in the available timeframe. Thought the

idea of choosing the largest and smallest assignments was considered as a sample

method, the one in ten pattern was chosen because it is a random sample and should

provide a wide range of coverage of events in Peterborough during 1960. Certain events

within the City would be smaller, and therefore likely contain fewer photographs, and I

did not want to neglect such photographs from my analysis. Additionally, more

negatives does not necessarily lead to more significance because many of the

assignments repeat each other; for example there are numerous assignments capturing

local hockey games.

4- If the assignment corresponding to a tenth position is missing from the collection, it will

be skipped, but the eleventh assignment is not described in its place. If the negatives

13

Page 15: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

corresponding to the tenth assignment are found and added to the collection at a later

date, this method ensures that the negatives can still be described without interrupting

the sampling method.

5- Using a computer to type the descriptions is ideal because it saves time. Additionally,

since the finding aid is to be in digital and print format, using a computer will prevent

having to type handwritten notes and essentially doing the descriptions twice. The

following works well;

Photographic Negative

The full description document can be viewed in Appendix 2.

Finding aid creation

1- Create a Microsoft Word document that contains the title of the collection, the creator,

material date, and physical description.

2- Add a scope and content section detailing the collection.

3- Detail the custodial history of the collection, as well as a biographical sketch and

administrative history to provide information regarding which companies have had

access to the collection as well as a biography of the photographer.

4- Indicate that the access is open to researchers so that it is known that historians and

citizens can utilize the collection, and indicate that a finding aid is available at the TVA.

14

Page 16: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

5- Incorporate access points so researchers can easily see what categories the negatives

fall into (i.e. business, institutions, sports, etc.).

6- File listings are to be incorporated to illustrate which negatives fall into which year, and

this provides researchers with the first and last assignment of the year to indicate how

large the collection is.

7- Detail the methods used to preserve and describe the negatives so that the project can

be repeated and the same results obtained.

8- Provide a general description for each assignment and indicate how many negatives are

contained therein. Include commentary to add specific details, such as writing that is

legible. Include which box the assignment is found in to provide easy access to

researchers. The following works well;

Results

The final research guide or finding aid was created through an in-depth analysis of the

1960 portion of the sous-fonds. Approximately 5000 negatives filling five boxes of the collection

were examined for damage as a part of the preservation step. Two types of damage were

discovered; water damage, and discolouration. Steps were taken to prevent further damage to

the negatives.

While the sous-fonds was in the custody of the Peterborough Examiner, the City was

affected by a flood in 2004. Many of the negatives were water damaged, and the Examiner staff

sent the collection to the Rosco Group, an archival preservation agency, in Montreal to stabilize

the damage by flash freezing. There is no data to explain the reasoning, but the glassine

envelopes were not changed prior to freezing. Through the stabilizing process, the glassine

envelope adhered to the emulsion on many of the negatives and was very difficult to remove. I

have attempted to resolve the water damage preservation problems, however have had little

success. A previous student studying archival management at Fleming College provided me with

the best means of discovering how to preserve the photos exposed to water damage by

contacting the Peterborough Museum and Archives website. Following the link, I was to fill out

the required information (name, email address, subject, and message), and send my request to

the conservator. Unfortunately, I never received a reply, and suggest that this be followed up

on in further research. Scans of several of these damaged negatives have been included in

Appendix 4.

The second type of damage affecting the photographic negatives is discolouration. Some

of the envelopes containing the negatives also housed a folded piece of paper. On this paper,

16

Page 18: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

there was a note containing a name, address, and price. The acid in the paper reacted with the

emulsion on the negative, and caused discolouration. The section of emulsion in contact with

the paper was copper in colour, as opposed to black. There is no means of reversing the colour

change, and therefore the damage cannot be undone. Further damage was minimized by

removing the paper and using a paper clip coated in plastic to attach the note to the outside of

the envelope. The paper clips must be plastic coated so that the acid in the metal does not

react with the negative, or rust and damage the envelope and negative. A scan of one of these

damaged negatives has been included in Appendix 4. The scanned negative appears copper and

blue. The copper represents the unaffected portion of the negative and the blue represents the

portion affected by acidic discolouration. In the scan, the copper represents the unaffected area

due to the change from negative to positive, and the light from the scanner passing through the

negative.

Upon the completion of the preservation stage of the project, analysis and description

of the negatives was required in order to create the finding aid. Sixty-seven assignments were

described in detail, totaling 461 negatives. The detailed description of the negatives can be

viewed in Appendix 2.

After examination and analysis of the negatives, it became apparent that there were

certain activities and events occurring more often than others, creating the access points in the

finding aid. These include recreational sports, businesses throughout the City, and car

accidents, among others. These access points provide researchers with the opportunity to

search for specific photographs by subject. The access points also provided insight into what

could be learned about Peterborough in 1960.

Discussion

Research Questions

What does a photographic archive tell us about Peterborough in the 1960s?

The photographic negatives contained in the 1960 NYB sous-fonds displayed

predominantly people partaking in various activities throughout Peterborough. Children,

teenagers, and adults were captured in sports, celebrations, and City events, suggesting the

citizens were well involved in their community. Within this large collection of photographs of

people, the vast majority of the photographic subjects are children or adolescents. These

children are captured participating in sports, including hockey, soccer, and baseball, as well as

community events including biking safety programs, and circuses. Considering Mr. Yunge-

Bateman was born in 1929, he would be in his thirties when taking these photographs, likely

having children of his own. This suggests he is promoting education and safety, particularly for

children, as can be seen in assignment 00527 (Refer to Appendix 3), by photographing a biking

safety event held by the Peterborough Police. By extension, police officers hosting or

volunteering in these activities further demonstrates not only their involvement in the

community, but also their interest in promoting education and safety for youth.

Numerous assignments depicting car accidents are also present in the NYB sous-fonds. I

could simply state that this may have been the result of poor driving skills within the

community, but it is also important to highlight the fact that the 1960s represent a time when

many of the ‘baby-boomers’ would be obtaining a licence and driving. Baby boomers is a term

given to people born from 1946 through 1965 because of a period of increased birthrates

18

Page 20: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

following the great depression of the 1930s (7). History tells us that young drivers are more

likely to be involved in automobile accidents than are experienced drivers specifically for that

reason; they are less experienced.

Photographing car accidents would also have been important for insurance brokers and

police officers. Insurance brokers would require photographs of the damage created in order to

determine the cost of the repairs, as well as to determine the amount by which a driver’s

insurance rates would increase. Police officers would require photographs of accidents to

visualize the extent of the damage, and to help reconstruct the accident for court purposes.

The presence of car accidents within the NYB collection also tells us that many people in

the City were driving. In the 1960s it was not very common for families to own an automobile.

In today’s society, most families own at least one car, but in the 1960’s this was not the case.

According to a study completed by Dargay and colleagues in 2007, 292 vehicles were owned

per every 1000 people in Canada in 1960 compared to 581 vehicles in 2002 (8). They further

found that in total, there were 5.2 million vehicles owned in Canada in 1960, and 18.2 million in

2002 (8). Furthermore, automobiles are an expensive item. Per-capita income in Canada in

1960 was roughly 10.4 thousand dollars (8). During this year, the list price of the average Ford

vehicle was $3,034, and the Chevrolet Bel-Air was priced at $2,936 9). However, some citizens

of Peterborough were likely able to afford these luxuries thanks to the establishment of many

large-scale companies including The Quaker Oats Company, General Electric, Westclox, and the

Peterborough Civic Hospital.

19

Page 21: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

Though only one or two photographs of these previously mentioned companies are

contained in the sous-fonds, it is important to draw attention to them. Considering the majority

of the photographic negatives are of people, to be photographed by Mr. Yunge-Bateman these

buildings must have played a significant role in the community. Each opened in Peterborough in

the early or mid-1900s, and provided numerous employment opportunities in the City. General

Electric, for example, employed roughly 6000 employees during the 1960s (10), and the

Peterborough Civic Hospital housed upwards of 400 beds, requiring enough staff to care for

such a number of patients (11). Additionally, Westclox employed nearly 800 people during this

same time period (12). The population of Peterborough in the 1960s was approximately 47,000

people, and therefore companies such as GE, Quaker, Westclox, and the Hospital were

responsible for employing a great percentage of the citizens, and as such they were important

aspects of the City.

Did the Examiner benefit from a staff photographer?

The determination of whether or not the Peterborough Examiner benefited from

employing Mr. Yunge-Bateman as a staff photographer requires first the understanding and

differentiation of staff and freelancing photographers. Though both forms of the profession

supply photographs to newspaper companies, staff photographers are employed by the

company and freelancing photographers are not. Since they are employed by the company,

staff photographers earn a salary whether they capture photographs on a daily basis or not.

Freelancing photographers capture images without direction and bring them to a newspaper

company for sale and are paid if the paper decides to publish the photograph (13).

Furthermore, photographs captured by freelancers belong to the photographer until sold, and

20

Page 22: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

those images captured by staff photographers are the rightful property of the employer upon

time of capture.

It is then necessary to consider a cost versus product ratio of both staff and freelance

photographers. Mr. Yunge-Bateman was paid a salary of $50 a week, whether he captured

photographs or not (3). The Examiner would therefore be paying him regardless, whereas they

would only have to pay a freelancer when buying a photograph. Staff photographers, however,

are assigned an event or story within the City to photograph, and therefore the Examiner would

know what types of images they would be receiving, and they know the quality of Mr. Yunge-

Bateman’s work. As mentioned, freelance photographers capture photographs and sell them to

companies to publish; the company would not know what events are covered, nor would they

know the quality of a freelancers work until they are approached. Though the Examiner would

be paying more by employing a staff photographer, they most likely benefited because they

could control which events within the City were photographed.

The photographic negatives contained in the 1960 NYB sous-fonds displayed

predominantly people partaking in various activities throughout Peterborough. The

incorporation of photographs displaying people in their daily activities into the newspaper was

likely an editorial choice made by the Examiner as opposed to a personal choice made by Mr.

Yunge-Bateman. Displaying such photographs in the newspaper would render better sales

because people like to collect memories of themselves. If a picture of themselves appear in the

newspaper, they are more likely to purchase a copy than they are if it contained only pictures of

landscapes and cityscapes. Staff photographers therefore were beneficial not only to the

Examiner, but also to the community because they would have access to photographs of

21

Page 23: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

themselves in the newspaper, and also images of events and stories alongside them to save as

memories.

Why are some assignments represented with a larger collection of photographs?

There are multiple possible explanations for the representation of some assignments

with a larger collection of photographs than others. Certain City events are larger than others,

and as such a photographer may be required to take more photographs to properly document

the event. Similarly, Mr. Yunge-Bateman may have had more personal interest in a certain

assignment, and therefore may have taken more photos out of pleasure. Finally, lighting

conditions may not have been optimal, and therefore Mr. Yunge-Bateman may have captured

several images, each with different shutter speeds or F-stops, in order to ensure at least one

good quality photograph.

Digital cameras did not exist until 1975 when invented and built by engineer Steven

Sasson (13), and therefore there was no way for a photographer to check the quality of a

photograph directly after capture. Rather, photographers had to develop film either on their

own or by taking the film to a professional developer. As such, it would often times be difficult,

if not impossible, to know the quality of a photograph at the time of capture; they could only

judge the quality based on lighting conditions and camera settings. To increase the likelihood of

a great photograph, photographers were required to adjust a camera’s shutter speed, F-stop,

and use and angle of a flash to capture photographs in a variety of lighting conditions. The

shutter speed controls how quickly the camera film is exposed to light by how long the shutter

stays open. Longer shutter speeds allow more light, while shorter shutter speeds allow less light

22

Page 24: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

(14). F-stop refers to the size of the aperture opening; a small opening that allows light to pass

through and to the film. Smaller F-stop numbers mean the aperture has a larger opening,

allowing more light in, and larger F-stop numbers mean the aperture has a smaller opening,

blocking more light from entering (14). When used together, shutter speed and F-stop numbers

can provide the perfect amount of light exposed to the film, and therefore producing better

photographs with ideal light exposure and better quality.

Benefits of the NYB Project

The finding aid created through the NYB project is important to the Trent Valley

Archives for numerous reasons. Firstly, the search for specific photographs is simplified because

one tenth of the assignments have been described to provide the user with a general idea of

what photographs are contained therein. Secondly, since all assignments are grouped

chronologically, the photographs can easily be found, allowing research and use to be more

effective.

The raw data outlining the preservation stage of the present project is beneficial for two

reasons. Firstly, it draws attention to which photographs are damaged and require further

preservation. Upon learning how to properly remove the envelope adhered to the emulsion on

the negatives, TVA staff will be able to refer to Appendix 1 and see which negatives have been

marked ‘Check Condition’. The appendix will save time as preservationists will not be required

to examine every negative to determine which photographs require attention. Secondly,

Appendix 1 can also be used to determine whether newly acquired negatives with a code

23

Page 25: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

resembling that created by Mr. Yunge-Bateman belong to the sous-fonds. If the negative code

is one presented in the ‘Missing Negatives’ column, it may be from the NYB collection.

Recommendations for Future Work

Further work will be required to properly preserve and document the remainder of the

NYB collection not covered in the present project. Additionally, research will need to be

completed to determine how to remove glassine envelopes that have adhered to the emulsion

on the negatives. I have attempted to solve this problem, but am yet to come to a solution.

Finally, the TVA has decided to contact Mr. Yunge-Bateman’s next of kin to inquire about the

journals.

Future researchers can contact the Peterborough Museum and Archives by utilizing the

following link and contacting the conservator regarding the preservation of water damaged

negatives; http://www.peterboroughmuseumandarchives.ca/Contact_Us.htm.

Conclusion

Though the process of creating the finding aid for the NYB sous-fonds was a large task, it

was made possible through appropriate organizational skills and the proper application of RAD.

The finding aid will prove to be a useful tool for the TVA and researchers within the community

of Peterborough as the search for a specific negative has been made easier. Researchers have

been provided with the opportunity to search chronologically or by key words. By combining

the two, more connections can be made and the history of Peterborough can be better

understood and will visually come alive.

Appendices Information

Appendix 1

Appendix 1 contains all the preservation data, including which negatives were water

damaged by the 2004 Peterborough flood, which required a new glassine envelope, and

instances in which multiple negatives were contained in one envelope and required separation.

Appendix 2

Appendix 2 contains the descriptions of negatives. Every tenth assignment was

described in full, and the description of each negative within these assignments can be found

here.

Appendix 3

Appendix 3 contains the finding aid for the NYB collection. This document outlines the

fonds number, title of the collection, creator, material date, the physical description of the

sous-fonds, access points and conditions, file listings, and accruals. It further details the scope

and content, custodial history, sous-fonds condition, biographical sketch and administrative

history, methods, observations, and applications. Finally, a description of every tenth

Photographic Negative

Description

00110-1 Middle aged man sitting alone at a cluttered desk. Formal attire. Smiling with teeth visible. Body turned toward camera

00110-2 Same man as 00110-1 still seated alone at the cluttered desk. Same position. Smiling, but closed mouth and no visible teeth

00110-3 Same man as 00110-1, leaning back in his chair, and still seated alone at the cluttered desk. Smiling again, open mouth

00120-1 Group of three elderly women seated on a couch examining papers that resemble hand-written notes. All are wearing glasses and hats

00120-2 Group of three elderly women (different women than 00120-1). Two are seated at a table and the woman on the left is standing at the same table writing in a notebook. A box is placed on the table and contains paper in plastic bags resembling Ziplock bags; the paper reads “Canada” and appears to be money bills. The two women seated are watching the woman who is standing and writing. All are wearing glasses and hats. Mantel situated behind the seated women reads ‘one thousand envelopes bouvier – 6 coins, 620 wove’

00120-3 Same photograph as negative 00120-1, only the lady on the far right is appearing more closely at the documents they have, and these documents are held higher above their laps

00120-4 Same photograph as negative 00120-2, only the lady standing on the left and the lady in the middle (first seated on the left) both have their mouths slightly open as though they are talking

00130-1 Woman seated at a filing cabinet, multiple drawers are open, and she is removing a document from one drawer. She is looking straight ahead, rather than at the document in her hand, as though she is thinking. The document title can only be partially read ‘pray galend’. The file cabinet top contains numerous documents. She is in professional attire

00130-2 Same photograph as negative 00130-1, only the woman is this time looking directly at the document in her hand

00130-3 Two men standing in front of an open cabinet with multiple shelves divided into thirds. The man on left is looking directly at the man on the right and holding up to eye level a document that reads ‘butter-making on the farm’. The man on the right is looking directly at the man on the left, and also holds a document in his hand at chest level; the title is not visible. They are both in suits and dressed professionally

00130-4 Same photograph as negative 00130-3, only the document title held by the man on the right can be partially read as he is holding it further from his body; ‘ dairy’

47

Page 49: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

00140-1 Two women standing and one man sitting in foreground of negative. A bag reading ‘march of dimes’ is placed on a table, and the man is showing the women a poster that reads ’50,000 mothers are helping the handicapped tonight – join the march of dimes’. On the wall behind them hangs a poster that reads ‘your dimes prevent polio – join the march of dimes’. All three people are smiling, and the woman standing in the middle is not looking at the woman on her right (the far left in the negative)

00140-2 Same photograph as negative 00140-1, only the lady standing on far left and the man sitting are smiling, whereas the other woman wears a straight face with her left hand on the man’s upper back, whom she is looking at directly

00201-1 Woman lying in a bed with a very young baby placed to her right (the left of the negative). The photograph is taking from the far right (the woman’s left) so that you can only see the side of the woman’s face as she is peering at the infant. Appears to be a hospital room based on the wires attached to the head of the bed and the movable tray table

00201-2 Same woman lying in a bed with the same infant placed beside her. The photograph is taken from the foot of the bed so that you can see the woman’s face, smiling at the baby

00211-1 Photograph of a sink and mirror hung on the tiled wall above it. You can see through the mirror that the door is closed, and you can see a portion of a person (unknown sex) through the mirrored reflection. Space for a Kleenex box is inserted into the wall beside the sink

00211-2 Photograph of the same sink and the toilet to its right. The mirror cannot be seen00211-3 Photograph of the same sink and a small portion of the toilet (only the metal tubing at

the top used to flush). Through the mirror, you can again see that the door is closed and the side of a person

00211-4 Appears to be the same photograph as negative 00211-3, only the person’s reflection cannot be seen in the mirror

00211-5 Appears to be the same photograph as negative 00211-2, only the bottom portion of the mirror can be seen indicating the camera was held or angled slightly higher

00211-6 Very poor quality photograph that appears to be the same as negative 00211-1. The contrast is very poor, making it difficult to discern detail. Perhaps the camera flash was reflected in the mirror therefore obscuring the photograph

00221-1 Two men dressed in suits are standing behind a television placed on a table. A tag is attached to the power knob on the TV. The men’s bodies are angled towards each other, but they are both facing the camera, neither is smiling and each has one hand placed atop the TV

00221-2 Same two men as in negative 00221-1, although they have switched sides. Man on the left is looking directly at the camera and the man on the right is looking at the other man. They hold the same body position (bodies angled towards each other and one hand atop the television). The man on the left is now wearing glasses. Neither is smiling

48

The woman (on the right) is looking directly at the man (on the left), and he is looking directly at the camera. He rests one hand atop the TV, and she rests both in front of her stomach, just behind the TV. Neither is smiling

00221-4 The man on the left of negative 00221-1 (man on right in negative 00221-2) and the man in negative 00221-3 are shaking hands, still positioned behind the television. Both are smiling

00231-1 Four women in dresses are standing in a group and appear to be conversing. The three women on the left are looking and smiling at woman on the far right, who appears to be talking

00231-2 Same group of four women. All four are smiling. The two on the left are looking at the two on the right, and the two on the right are looking at the two on the left

00241-1 Outdoor shot. A truck is driving down the road, headed towards the camera, and the road is flooded. The tires are nearly half submerged in water. The car appears to be just part the end of a bridge.

00241-2 Outdoor shot. A large bus reading ‘Warbaw coach lines’ is now next to and slightly ahead of the same truck at in negative 00241-1. The truck is still in the water, but the front end of the bus is not in water. Overhead wires can be seen in the background on the right side of the photograph

00241-3 Outdoor shot. Appears to be a photograph taken from the opposite end of the bridge based on the position (now on the left and in the mid-ground) of the trees and overhead wires seen in the background of negative 00241-2. A car is on pavement, not submerged in water at any point, and a truck is behind the car, tires nearly half submerged in water

00251-1 A group of four middle aged women in dresses, all looking at each other as if they are conversing. Woman on the far left is standing in front of a flower covered trellis. To her right is a woman sitting. To her right a woman is standing behind a fence, leaning on it with her forearms. The woman on the far right is seated atop a cloth covered table. In the background there is a bare tree with little hearts hanging from it. None are smiling

00251-2 Same four women in the same positions. The camera is closer to the group. They continue to talk amongst themselves, but all are smiling

00261-1 Group of 11 women lined up one behind the other, each holding a long pole with a flag. The women are in a dress uniform. There are rows of long benches on the left of the negative. The women all wear straight faces, and are looking straight ahead

00271-4 Same two men as in negative 00271-1. Man in the scuba suit is no longer smoking. The two men appear as though they are still conversing, and the man on the left is leaning in closer to the man in the scuba gear on the right

00271-5 Camera is looking straight on at the man in the scuba gear, whose mask is still open. A large crowd has gathered behind him in the background

00281-2 Same photograph as negative 00281-1, only the camera is closer to the car and the woman. She wears a slight smile

00281-3 Same photograph as negative 00281-1, only the woman’s body is turned away from the camera, so that her back now faces the open door as opposed to her right side (our left). She is not smiling

00291-1 Four middle aged women in dresses and gloves with their hair done up nicely pose for the camera under streamers twirling down from the ceiling. All are smiling

00291-2 Same photograph as negative 00291-1, but with better lighting presenting more detail of their facial features and more contrast

002101-1 Close up image of scaffolding next to a brick building. Two men can be seen atop the temporary structure

002101-2 Photograph of the entire building. You can see a crane near the center of the building and the scaffolding structure to the right of the building. It resembles the old Peterborough hospital prior to its reconstruction

002101-3 A large scaffolding structure taller than the brick building. Smaller scaffolding structures can be seen around this large one, and men can be seen atop this smaller structures

onto a piece of fabric. A mallet and hunting knife in a case are placed on the table in front of him, as is twine, pencils, and a small book

002111-3 The young boy and middle aged man from negative 002121-1 have switched places so that the boy is now watching the middle aged man work at the table. The man appears to be drawing

002111-4 Same photograph as negative 002121-2, only taken from a greater distance

002121-1 Group of seven men and one woman seated. Most are looking straight ahead; two are looking at the camera. They all wear straight faces and appear to be listening to someone talk. All the men wear plaid vests with solid coloured shirts, and the women are wearing plaid dresses with solid colour sleeves

002121-2 An older gentleman can be seen with his back facing the camera; he wears a solid coloured suit. He is holding a microphone to a group of 2 men and one woman. Three other people are off to the right side, blurry in the foreground, listening

002121-3 The same group can be viewed in this photograph as in negative 002121-2. The older gentleman now holds the microphone to his own mouth as all the others listen

002121-4 The woman from negative 002121-2 whom the older gentleman held the microphone to is now handing him a piece of unfolded paper. The two men she was seated with in negative 002121-2 are watching intently.

00302-1 Two men in formal attire are facing each other and appear to be talking as the man on the right is inserting a time card into a machine (punching either in or out at work). Camera is slightly behind the man on the right. On the wall in the background hands rows of numbered slots that fall under columns titled ‘in’ or ‘out’

00302-2 Same photograph taken from an angle positioned between the two men, slightly more towards the man on the left

00312-1 A car parallel parked on the side of the road in what appears to be downtown Peterborough based on the style of the buildings. The car reads ‘Peterborough Electric Ltd. Service’. 51

Page 53: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

00332-2 Two men standing in front of what appears to be a shelving unit with a glass door. The man on the right is looking at the camera while sliding the glass door open. The man on the left is looking towards the other man

00332-3 Two men in the foreground. The man on the left is the man who was opening the glass door in negative 00332-2. He is again looking directly at the camera. Fonds Number: 340, series C1

Title: Nicholas Yunge-Bateman sous-fonds, Series C1 of the Peterborough Examiner fonds

Creator: Nicholas Yunge-Bateman (1929-2014), photographer with the Peterborough Examiner

Material Date: 1959-1965

Physical Description: 15ft, c. 15,000 negative images. Negatives are 4”x5” and 2”x2”.

Scope and Content:

This collection fills 14 shoeboxes and contains approximately 15,000 photographic negatives, organized in chronological order as taken by Mr. Yunge-Bateman himself during his employment as a staff photographer with the Peterborough Examiner from December 1959 through January 1965 inclusive.

The photographic collection captures Peterborough and surrounding region in numerous ways. Many photographic negatives capture the landscapes and townscapes, others show people in their daily routines, and yet many more illustrate special events, sports, and school. Collectively, these provide windows into life in the City from December 1959 through January 1965.

The start of the collection contains primarily 4”x5” negatives; however as we progress through the collection it is nearly half composed of 2”x2” negatives, especially near the end of 1960, starting in July. Throughout the years, the 4”x5” negatives become more frequent again. The prevalence of 2”x2” negatives may have been more common near the end of 1960 because Mr. Yunge-Bateman’s camera was being repaired.

Access Conditions: Open to researchers

Finding Aids: Available below for the year 1960 only

Accruals: None expected; however, missing negatives may be found and added to the collection

Custodial History:

The archivist followed the numbering system devised by Nicholas Yunge-Bateman. The first digit refers to the year between 1959 and 1965; the second and third digits show month; the last two or three digits indicate assignment within the month. After the hyphen, the numbers indicate sequence within the project. This numbering system has been maintained by the archivist; however in cases where NYB had more than one image in a single glassine envelope, subsequent copies were indicated by (2), etc. Negatives that required conservation attention were marked with CC (check condition) on the glassine envelope. The iconographic (photographic) collection was housed at in the Peterborough Examiner Archives from the time Mr. Yunge-Bateman was employed until the end of December 2011.

The Peterborough Examiner fonds was in the custody of the Peterborough Examiner before it was donated to the Trent Valley Archives in December of 2011 where it currently resides. Founded in 1989, the Trent Valley Archives promotes and studies local and family history in east central Ontario. Not only does the TVA host archival material, but also promotes local history in the community by organizing pub tours, ghost, heritage, and cemetery walks, and gives presentations to countless City organizations.

Condition:

While in the Peterborough Examiner custody, negatives were damaged by the 2004 Peterborough flood. Glassine envelopes stuck to many of the negatives, primarily on the side containing the emulsion. Damage ranges from just around the perimeter to affecting up to 2/3 of the negative. The NYB collection was shipped to Rosco in Montreal for flash freezing to stabilize damage caused by the flood. The glassine envelopes were not replaced there. Though there is no definitive reason as to why, this may have been a cost issue.

Inside some of the envelopes along the negative was a folded piece of paper containing a name, address, and a price. Over time, the acid in the paper reacted with the emulsion on the negative, and caused discolouration of the emulsion. To prevent any further damage, the note was paper-clipped to the outside of the negative using a plastic coated clip, to ensure the metal would not react with the negative.

Biographical Sketch/Administrative History:

The Peterborough Examiner is a daily newspaper that services Peterborough, Ontario and surrounding area, and is currently owned by Sun Media. Between 1942 and 1955 it was edited by Canadian man of letters Robertson Davies, whose unique three-paragraph editorial style won several awards. Davies remained the owner and publisher of the

100

Page 102: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

Examiner until 1965, when it was sold to the Thompson chain of newspapers. It is the only daily newspaper in Peterborough city and county. Its publisher today is Darren Murphy and managing editor is Kennedy Gordon.

Nicholas Yunge-Bateman was born September 2, 1929 in Lancashire, England. In England he was employed at two newspaper companies, the 12. He and his wife moved to Canada from Wales in 1954, and ended up in Peterborough, Ontario. He was employed at the Peterborough Examiner as both a reporter and photographer from 1954 through 1965. In 1959, he became a staff photographer within the company, where he was tasked with capturing images of local events and people. Mr. Yunge-Bateman was the first Examiner employee to receive recognition in the paper for his photographs; his name appeared alongside his published photographs instead of ‘staff photographer’ like so many others. This gave copyright of the photograph to the photographer rather than the publisher. He moved to Port McNeill, British Columbia in 1965, where he continued photography for pleasure, and owned a small photography business. Mr. Yunge-Bateman passed away on June 2, 2014 as the result of a stroke.

Methods:

The project will consist mainly of two parts; the preservation of the collection, and the analysis and description of the negatives. Preservation of the negatives involves removing each negative from its envelope and examining it for any aspects of poor quality including the removal of emulsion, or the envelope sticking to the negative. While working through this aspect of the project, it was discovered that many negatives could not be removed from their envelope, and therefore required ripping the envelope. In these cases, the photographic code was written onto a new envelope and the negative was put into it, and the old glassine envelope was disposed of. Those images that were damaged were marked with a CC (check condition), indicating they require further steps for preservation.

For any negatives whereby emulsion was discoloured due to reaction with acidic paper, the paper was removed and paper-clipped to the outside of the negative using a plastic coated clip, to ensure the metal would not react with the negative and prevent further damage from the paper itself.

The description of the negatives involves examining a selection of the photographs on a light table, which provides contrast between the dark and light spaces for ease of viewing the photographic details. The negatives are then described in as much detail as possible. Due to the large number of negatives found within 1960, 1 in every 10 assignments will be described in full. One in ten has been decided upon rather than choosing the largest or smallest collections because it is a random sample and should provide a wide range of coverage of events in Peterborough during the year. The 10th assignment will be the first described. Every 10th after this will be described. If the assignment corresponding to a 10th

position is missing from the collection, it will be skipped, but the 11th will be not described

102

Page 104: Ungergraduate Community Based Research Project; The Nicholas Yunge-Bateman Sous-Fonds

in its place. If the assignment is found and added to the collection at a later date, this method ensures that it can still be described without interrupting the sampling method.

Applications:

Photography is important City newspapers because it provides visual appeal to the readers. Photographs capture the corresponding stories at the time they occurred to, and preserve them for years to come.

Staff photographers are more commonly employed nowadays because newspapers know what to expect. They provide the photographers with an event to cover, and can be certain they will be presented with good quality photographs because these people are professionals. Free lancing photographs capture photographs of their choice, and present them to newspaper companies in the hopes of being published.

The NYB collection can be used by researchers and histories, as well as community members for numerous purposes. Researchers can utilize the photographic negatives to add visuals to their reports, and can draw inferences from the collection to gather data for their reports. Similarly, historians can access the NYB collection to gather data regarding events that occurred in Peterborough in the past. The collection would also allow historians to see the landscapes and townscapes of the City during the 1960s. Finally, the community can utilize the NYB collection to find photographs of them in their past, or to learn more about local history.
