Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital

DESCRIPTION

The Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital (formerly

known as Queensland Children’s Hospital) will

be Queensland’s Primary Specialist Paediatric

Hospital offering 12 clinical levels, 4 basement

levels and a remote energy plant to supply

energy needs of the hospital precinct that is over

110000 m2 in total. This purpose-built facility

will incorporate the history, skills and expertise

of the staff of the Royal Children’s hospital and

Mater Children’s hospital.

UNI-SPAN SOLUTION

The package amounted to supplying and

erecting around 44,000m2 of edge protection

and 3650 tonnes of scaffolding for the duration

of the 130-week program. Over 40 Uni-span

personnel worked at the QCH site, including

skilled scaffolding labour, supervisors,

engineers, draftsmen, contract administrators,

WHS personnel and contract managers.

Uni-span also dedicated a WPHS representative

to the project, who undertook safety audits

in conjunction with the client and Uni-span

Site Supervisor to ensure all contracted

requirements, due diligence requirements and

applicable safety standards were met. Solving

the access to these work fronts, with a safe,

smart and accurate design was essential.

Other complex design solutions were the

helideck, QCHEP Cantilevered eastern façade

and Core 3 suspended special bracket scaffold.

RESULT

For the length of this contract, Uni-span had a

remarkable safety record. Despite unforeseen

general project delays, Uni-span met every

required stage of completion. Another challenge

Uni-span was successful in was the co-

ordination of scaffolding to satisfy various trades

needing access to the work face, within the

design and also within the location constraints,

due to the site’s proximity to the Mater Special

School and Stanley and Raymond Terrace road

fronts.

QCLNG

DESCRIPTION

Queensland Curtis LNG (QCLNG) will be the

world’s first project to turn gas from coal seams

into liquefied natural gas, or LNG.

This major, integrated US$20.4 billion project,

located from Western Downs to Curtis Island,

involves:

u Expanding QGC’s existing natural gas

production in the Surat Basin of southern

Queensland.

u Building a 540km buried natural gas

pipeline network linking the gas fields to

Gladstone.

u Constructing a natural gas liquefaction plant

on Curtis Island, near Gladstone, where the

gas will be converted to LNG for export.

UNI-SPAN SOLUTION

Approximately 900 tonnes of access scaffolding

solutions has been supplied to the Southern

Region (4+1), demonstrating Uni-span’s

industrial capabilities by highlighting that

Uni-span:

u Has a large quantity of stock and labour

resources to supply major industrial

construction projects.

u Doesn’t have the need to cross hire stock or

labour.

u Has a very competitive pricing structure.

u Has ongoing supply of maintenance and

support services.

u Has the support for commissioning trades

and services.

Another advantage is that logistically, Uni-span’s

yard is situated in close proximity to the site.

Order management system BizSync, also allows

Uni-span to manage the project remotely and

accurately.

RESULT

The project will draw on QGC’s extensive natural

gas expertise and BG Group’s international

experience in liquefied natural gas, at a time of

rising demand for cleaner, more efficient energy.

Importantly, QCLNG will also help to address

climate change by allowing natural gas, which

has the lowest carbon emissions of all fossil fuels,

to be transported economically around the world.

North QLD Line Crossings

DESCRIPTION

To ensure the continued reliability of electricity

supply to Far North Queensland, the existing

50-year-old 132kV transmission line between

the substations required replacement. This

replacement line will cater for future growth

in electricity demand. After all the necessary

environmental and planning approvals were

received, construction of the replacement

transmission line commenced over a two stage

approach, to allow one line to be kept in service

at all times so as to maintain a reliable supply of

high voltage electricity to the surrounding grids.

UNI-SPAN SOLUTION

The Uni-span solution which secured the

contract, was cost-effective and created the

safety measures expected for a project of this

nature.

272 tonnes of scaffold was supplied for

this project. 40m long x 12m wide birdcage

scaffolds, supported by Uni-beams were

situated either side of the highway, ensuring

that all vehicles travelling on this route were well

protected, should any of the power lines have

accidentally fallen during the transfer process.

There were a few project challenges to

overcome that the Uni-span team worked

through with our client BBUGL (Balfour Beatty

UGL), namely:

u Liaison with Main Roads.

u Consistently update and liaise with

BBUGL and the Traffic Coordination team all

while working safely and efficiently around

the highway and power line upgrades.

RESULT

The result was a protection system that ensured

safety for motorists using this highway and a

spectacular looking scaffold formation.

Trackstar

DESCRIPTION

The Stage 2 Richlands to Springfield Project will

provide key public transport infrastructure to

support the expected population growth in the

western corridor. The project will deliver a 9.5km

dual track passenger rail line between Richlands

and Springfield, extending the city rail network

to this rapidly growing area.

UNI-SPAN SOLUTION

Uni-span Formwork Solutions secured this

contract by providing a cost effective and time

saving solution to create the 22m wide x 12m

high arch forms which will become the support

structures for the elevated bridge. Tony Pepe,

Director of Niepe Construction Pty Ltd had this

to say, “Uni-span’s MK system has ensured

the fast assembly of a very complex structure.

Further, Niepe are concreting the arches in

one pour. Uni-span’s solution was the only one

which allowed that sequence.”

RESULT

Uni-span Formwork Solutions was able to

provide a “one pour” solution by using the

skillfully designed travelling MK system.

On completion, the $475 million project built:

u Two train stations — Springfield and

Springfield Central.

u A 9.5 km dual track rail line from Richlands

to Springfield.

u Safety and capacity improvements on the

Centenary Highway.

u Changes to the local road network with two

crossings under the Centenary Highway

from Springfield Central station to the Orion

Shopping Centre.

u A cycle path from Johnson Road, Carole

Park to the Springfield Link Bridge.

u A pedestrian and cycle path between

Springfield station and Springfield Central

station.

WICET

DESCRIPTION

Increasing demand for coal is driving Australia’s

coal export market and worldwide demand

is expected to continue to grow significantly.

In order to meet this demand, greater export

capacity is required and WICET will provide a

valuable boost to existing and future coal export

capacity for Queensland’s coal producers in the

Bowen and Surat Basins.

This $2.5 billion project will provide more than

800 jobs on site and employ approximately 120

personnel during operation.

Main components included in this project’s

scope are:

u Rail receiver dump station, handling 7600

tonnes per hour

u 5.5km long overland conveyor

u Stockyard area for 1.9 million tonnes of coal

u 2km long jetty conveyor

u Single berth with travelling ship loader

(8250 tonnes per hour)

u Channels and wharf (accepting

40000dwt – 220000dwt)

u 132kV substation, access roads,

workshops, admin offices and amenities

Once fully commissioned the export terminal

will effectively double coal export capacity at the

Port of Gladstone, exporting 80 million tonnes

per annum.

UNI-SPAN SOLUTION

Uni-span was approached to offer their expertise

on how best to form the coal conveyor tunnels,

with each tunnel measuring 950 metres in

length. Many factors needed to be considered,

not least the integrity of the waterproofing,

but also the changes in direction and safety

constraints that is of paramount importance to

the project.

The MK System Civil Engineering Kit was

chosen as the optimal system solution best

suited to overcome the obstacles presented

through varying gradients and interfaces

of square to curved junctions of discharge

chambers throughout. The high moment

connections between the MK Walers allowed

generally less equipment to be used and larger

than usual pouring platforms to be incorporated.

AGJV (Abi-group Golding Joint Venture) concluded that the versatility offered with

the MK system, jointly supplied with wall formwork systems Orma and Enkoform

VMK as well as slab formwork system Enkoflex, would best address these issues.

RESULT

The tunnels were poured in varying lengths from 15.00m up to 30.00m sections

to enable the construction sequence to best meet the gradient change points.

120Lm of MK tunnel form were supplied in total. Coupled with hydraulics to

enable a smooth strike and Ulma’s electric driving motors, the tunnel forms were

easily moved into the next position at travelling speeds of 6.2m/minute. The

tunnels internal diameter of 6.50m was consistent, with the wall thickness varying

externally from 375mm at the highest point to 700mm at the stub sides.

Uni-span were also engaged to engineer and supply formwork on the remaining

global works structures including a Barge Wharf and a 2km jetty as well as supply

the projects scaffolding needs.

Legacy Way – Smoke Duct Corbels

DESCRIPTION

Two TBM’s (tunnel boring machines), each

12.4 metres in diameter and 110 metres in

length were used to excavate Brisbane City

Council’s Legacy Way tunnel. It took each TBM

approximately 10 months to complete this

stage of the project, which will connect the 4.6

kilometre road tunnel from the Western Freeway

at Toowong to the Inner City Bypass at Kelvin

Grove. Each 2,800 tonne TBM excavated spoil

from the tunnel while lining the tunnel with

precast concrete segments forming the tunnel

wall.

Along with the TBM’s, Transcity used cut and

cover structures to construct the tunnels entry

and exit portals. In order to move to the next

stage of construction, the mechanical and

electrical fit out, Transcity was looking for an

innovative solution to assist with the installation

of corbels and smoke ducts for the tunnels.

UNI-SPAN SOLUTION

Uni-span was engaged at the beginning of

the project in the planning, procurement and

construction of the ventilation smoke duct

corbels in the Legacy Way twin 4.6km road

tunnels. A first for an Australian road tunnel, the

pre-stressed precast concrete slabs are simply

supported by cast in situ corbels. Erecting the

precast slabs post corbel construction poses

considerable challenges in terms of logistics,

geometry (space) and safety. This meant the

corbels had minimal tolerance to ensure the

critical airtight seal was achieved.

Uni-span took on the challenge by designing

and offering the MK System motorised traveller

with custom made retractable steel forms. The

MK system was selected to form the corbels in

two 50m hit and miss travellers, each traveller

had 20 hours to be lowered, driven 100m,

raised and the next section poured. Due to the

speed of this system, Uni-span also supplied

two additional advancing travellers per tunnel to

ensure that both the safe drilling of the starter

bars and also the placement of the 8m long

reinforcement cages would not hold up the

progress of the Smoke Duct Corbel traveller.

The MK System therefore created a seamless

motorised production line to ensure the

programmed 50m pour per 20-hour shift from

start to finish was achieved.

The whole solution revolved around a 700mm height difference halfway along the

tunnel. The versatility of the MK System ensured that this was a smooth transition,

demonstrating its market leading edge over all other formwork systems.

RESULT

This traveller in motion is a vision of impeccable engineering, demonstrating how

early engagement between Uni-span and our client will assist in meeting tight

project programmes and deadlines. We believe we have raised the standard and

set the bar for all future civil projects on how to solve a complex road tunnel fit out

challenge in Australia.
