UNIDO and its Energy Portfolio

• UNIDO is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability.

• The mission of UNIDO is to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in developing countries and economies in transition.

• ISID: Lima Declarations (1975 and 2013)

• 1975: https://www.unido.org/fileadmin/media/images/1975-Lima_Declaration_and_Plan_of_Action_on_Industrial_Development_and_Co-operation_26.3.1975.pdf

• 2013https://www.unido.org/fileadmin/user_media_upgrade/Who_we_are/Mission/ISID-Brochure-LowRes1_EN.pdf

4

ISID Means that

• Every country achieves a higher level of industrialization in their economies, and benefits from the globalization of markets for industrial goods and services

• No one is left behind in benefiting from industrial growth, and prosperity is shared among women and men in all countries

• Broader economic and social growth is supported within an environmentally sustainable framework

• The unique knowledge and resource of all relevant development actors are combined to maximize the development impact of ISID

6

SDG9 in the 2030 Agenda • The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

explicitly recognizes Inclusive and Sustainable Industrialization

• SDG 9: “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation”

• UNIDO’s relevance encompasses all SDGs

• Industry is a main driver of job creation, sustained economic growth and collective wellbeing, but also of technology transfer, investment and skills development

• The link to innovation and infrastructure strengthens ISID as the locomotive of sustainable development, a dynamic process that entails entrepreneurship, continued diversification and industrial upgrading, and growing trade

• Industrial development touches upon economic, social and environmental goals, and is thus intrinsically woven into the 2030 Agenda

Energy Activities

• Flagship Programmes: • Low-Carbon Low-Emission Clean Energy Technology Transfer Programme

• The Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP) for SMEs

• Global Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centers(GN-SEC)

• The Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN)

• The Vienna Energy Forum (VEF)

• Private Financing Advisory Network

• World Small Hydropower Development Programme

• ……

Vision: promoting sustainable energy for productive capacities, industrial

competitiveness and job creation

10

• Energy Efficiencies:

• Colombia, Egypt, Myanmar: Industrial Energy Efficiency

• China, Malaysia, South Africa: Energy Efficiency and Low Carbon transport

• India: Energy Efficiency and Renewable energy in MSMEs

• Indonesia, Thailand, Ukraine, Vietnam: Energy Efficiency through System Optimization and Standard, Green industry ……

• Low carbon technologies and cross cutting issues(NEXUS)

• Global Networks and Platform

• Gender Responsive Climate Policy

12

Small Hydropower Characters and Functions

• Definition : 10 MW and below in the majority , related to incentive policies for development

• Long historical application (over 100 years)

• Mature technology

• Relative low cost, and easy maintenance

• Off-grid, Mini-grid for remote area

• Environmental protection

• Economic advantages / local development

• Adaption for climate change

16

UNIDO plays key role on SHP worldwide

• Networking for cooperation: ICSHP, RC in Nigeria; India; Tanzania, and RE&EE centers in different regions

• World SHP Development Reports (2013, 2016, ……)

• International SHP Standard (in preparing)

• Green Hydropower Development

• Energy access: SHP pilot projects through GEF in many developing countries

• Promote south-south cooperation

• Productive use to support industrialization and PCP.

• … …

17

UNIDO’s Interventions in SHP projects

• Project implementation: India, Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zambia etc.

• Capacity Building, feasibility studies, technical transfer and investment promotion

• Research and development and networking activities

18

Shiwang’andu SHP station in Zambia

• Shiwang’andu SHP station is a turn-key project with capacity of 1MW, located in Muchinga Province, the northeast of Zambia, 800 km away from the capital city.

• UNIDO, ZESCO and ICSHP worked closely. The construction period was about one year and a half.

19

• The small hydro power station was successfully installed in Nigeria’s Taraba State in March 2014 by UNIDO,UNHCR and ICSHP

Tunga Dam SHP station in Nigeria

It has an operating capacity of 400kW and has been

supplying clean electricity to the tea factory and local

communities, benefiting 6 villages and about 3,000

people, including refugees

20

Challengers for SHP development

• Suitable Policy, legal and regulatory framework

• Financing Issues

• SHP knowledge and basic information

• Technical capacities

• Environmental concept

• Social concept

• ICSHP, established in 1994, China

• Under auspices of UNIDO and MWR

• HQs of INSHP

• MISSION:

Promote SHP development worldwide

Two regional SHP centers in Nigeria, India for regional SHP technical assistance One SHP center in Tanzania for country purpose through GEF project

24

Scale up of SHP development • Pilot in some selected developing countries (Nigeria, Ethiopia,

Myanmar, Kyrgyzstan)

• Investment mobilization for construction: Business Model Innovation

• SHP Master Plan for regions (ECOWAS, SADC, COMESA … )

• Scale up of SHP in Africa, Asia and Latin America
