“We Can” Food Drive

The 4th grade food drive will be ending on Monday, May 15th. You can give non-perishable foods to the 4th grade classroom. All the food will go to the Come Spring Food Pantry in Union. Our goal is 300 cans. Each class will get 1 marble for every can you donate. The class that donates the most cans gets a secret prize. Before donating food, please ask parent for permission. You don’t need to donate food if you don’t have any to donate. Thank you for helping others.

Let’s  Get  Growing!

UES  has  big  plans  for  the  greenhouse  and  surrounding  area  this  spring!

We  are  hoping  to  clean  up  and  repair  the  greenhouse  for  vegetable  growing  by  the  end  of  the  school  year,  but  on  the  morning  of  Saturday,  May  13th,  I  am  hoping  to  get  our  butterAly  garden  and  cabbage  and  pumpkin  patches  in  the  ground!

I  am  looking  for  volunteers  to  help  dig  up  and  replant  Alowers,  possibly  set  up  box  gardens  (if  I  can  get  them  donated!)  and  plant  pumpkin  seeds.    I  will  also  be  on  the  lookout  for  free  plants,  seeds,  soil  and  gardening  tools  to  borrow.

With  all  of  this  combined  effort,  hopefully  our  students  will  have  pumpkins,  monarch  caterpillars,  and  other  life  cycles  to  study,  observe,  and  enjoy  in  the  fall  and  beyond!

Thanks  in  advance!

Maine Immunization Program Tel. (207) 287-3746 Fax (207) 287-8127

FAQ: Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) School Immunization Requirement

What is the new Tdap requirement? All students entering, advancing, or transferring into seventh (7th) grade will need proof of the Tdap booster immunization before entry into school starting this coming August, the 2017-18 school year. This requirement applies to 7th grade students ONLY; grades 8-12 are NOT included in this rule change.

Why was the Tdap requirement added? The new immunization requirement is intended to reduce the spread of pertussis in Maine. In recent years Maine has seen a dramatic increase in the number of cases of pertussis, also know as whooping cough, throughout the state. Prior to entering kindergarten, most children are fully protected against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis after receiving the DTaP vaccine in early childhood. However, immunity to these diseases wears off, leaving adolescents vulnerable once again. A booster dose of Tdap during adolescence helps to protect students and their close contacts, including young infants for whom pertussis is most severe.

Who is affected by the Tdap requirement? All public and private schools with enrolled 7th grade students are affected by the law.

What exemptions are available under Maine law? Maine law describes three exemptions for student immunization requirements. Schools should maintain an up-to-date list of students with exemptions so those students can be excluded quickly if an outbreak occurs.

o Medical exemptions: Physicians may grant in writing an exemption for students for whom immunizations are not medically indicated.

o Religious: You may request an exemption for children from immunization requirements if the immunization is contrary to your religious beliefs. The parent or guardian requesting an exemption needs to provide the school with a signed note stating the objection. Religious exemptions must be renewed annually.

o Philosophical exemptions: You may request an exemption for children from immunization requirements if the immunization is contrary to your personal beliefs. The parent or guardian requesting an exemption needs to provide the school with a signed note stating the objection. Philosophical exemptions must be renewed annually.

When should children get vaccinated with Tdap? Now. Avoid the rush and make sure your children can start school on time. Parents are encouraged to make an appointment for their incoming 7th grader to get a Tdap booster shot now. Children as young as 10 years old are recommended to get vaccinated with Tdap. This will protect them against the ongoing threat of pertussis and will meet the Tdap school requirement for when they are in 7th grade.  Keep  documentation  of  the  child’s  Tdap  booster  shot. Children will need proof of immunization in order to start school.

Symptoms of Tick-borne Illness

• Your symptoms• The geographical region in which you were bitten• Diagnostic tests, if indicated by the symptoms and the region where you were bitten

The most common symptoms of tick-related illnesses are:

• Fever/chills: With all tick-borne diseases, patients can experience fever at varying degrees and time of onset.• Aches and pains: Tick-borne disease symptoms include headache, fatigue, and muscle aches. With Lyme disease you may also

experience joint pain. The severity and time of onset of these symptoms can depend on the disease and the patient's personal tolerance level.

• Rash: Lyme disease, southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI), Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), ehrlichilsis, and tularemia can result in distinctive rashes.

! Tick-borne diseases can result in mild symptoms treatable at home, to severe infections requiring hospitalization. Although easily treated with antibiotics, these diseases can be difficult for physicians to diagnose. However, early recognition and treatment of the infection decreases the risk of serious complications. So see your doctor immediately if you have been bitten by a tick and experience any of the symptoms described here.

Adapted from the CDC online article on symptoms of tick-borne illnesses.

Many tick-borne diseases can have similar signs and symptoms. If you have been bitten by a tick and develop the symptoms below within a few weeks, a health care provider should evaluate the following before deciding on a course of treatment:
