    Kindergarten Registration

    February 5 & 6, 2014 Kindergarten registration for the 2014-2015 school

  • Outstanding Students of the Month One student is selected per month from each grade level by their teachers for various positive rea-sons based on our C.H.O.I.C.E. initiative (Care, Help, Own, Include, Cooperate, Excel). Each stu-dent receives a packet of goodies for his or her efforts. Congratulations to all the students!

    2nd Grade Lexi Manteufel is this month's outstanding student. Lexi is a self-motivated individual who does her best work

    and treats all students respectfully!

    3rd Grade Caroline Novak is not only kind and respectful, but she has never had a late assignment. She puts effort into

    everything she does, and she's a great example for others. Congratulations, Caroline! You deserve it.

    4th Grade Anna Klawinski is extremely helpful and caring to others. She puts great effort into all of her work and is a good

    example to other students. Fantastic job, Anna!

    5th Grade Anthony Bednar is a student who puts exceptional effort into all that he does. His dedication to succeed in fifth

    grade is admirable. Anthony is also a kind and patient friend who works well in groups, makes positive contribu-

    tions to classroom discussions, and is an overall pleasure to have in class.

    6th Grade Kameryn Wisch is a hard working student who puts time and effort into her work. She also works well with oth-

    ers and has great classroom behavior! Keep it up!

    7th Grade Tyler Hoegsted is a hard worker, always putting forth full effort using all his resources. He’s conscientious

    about his learning and shows pride in his work.

    8th Grade Danya Almoghrabi is a leader among her peers. She is organized, responsible, and has a strong work ethic. It is

    evident that Danya takes pride in her work, as she puts great effort in everything she does. Keep it up, Danya!

    Will the groundhog see his shadow on February 2nd? Legend has it that if the groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil does not see his shadow we will have an early spring! Keep your fingers crossed!

    8th Grade Graduation Gowns

    All graduating 8th graders will wear graduation gowns dur-

    ing the ceremony. Each student will purchase a gown to

    keep for $18.00 or use a previously purchased gown from a

    sibling/friend (UGHS graduates use the same gown).

    Order forms will be sent home with students in February.

    Inspired by Ryan Arts Fair On March 29th the third annual Inspired by Ryan Arts Fair will be held in memory of Ryan Luxem here at UGES, to increase childhood cancer awareness and also raise funds for the MACC Fund for childhood can-cer research. Please take a minute to read the infor-mation at the end of this newsletter and/or visit the event website at http://inspiredbyryan.webs.com. Please also pass this information on to anyone who may be interest-ed in getting involved. Sharing this information is key to a successful event. Please help us find a kinder and gentler cure.

    Southern Lakes Anthology

    Congratulations to the following stu-

    in the 2014 Southern Lakes Anthology called

    "Figure it Out". These students and their

    parents will also be invited to a special

    ceremony and reception at UW-Whitewater in May. (More

    details on that later.)

  • Wisconsin Public School Observance Days

    Feb. 12 - Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday Elected president in 1860, Abraham Lincoln was commander-

    in-chief during the Civil War. In 1863, he signed the Emanci-

    pation Proclamation, which declared that slaves held in the re-

    bellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free." Four

    months before his assassination, the 13th Amendment to the

    Constitution, which abolished slavery, was adopted. Originally part of court statutes to observe these days and was enacted for the schools on June 27, 1923, from the

    1923 Laws of Wisconsin, Chapter 307, section 20.

    Feb. 15 - Susan B. Anthony’s Birthday

    Susan B. Anthony, an early suffragist, organized campaigns

    across the United States advocating the rights of women to

    vote, to get an education, and to own property. In 1872, she

    voted in a federal election and was arrested, tried, and fined for

    her action. In 1920, 14 years after her death, the 19th Amend-

    ment to the Constitution granting women the right to vote was

    ratified by three-fourths of the states and adopted. Enacted April 15, 1976, from the 1975 Laws of Wisconsin, Chapter 204.

    Feb. 22 - George Washington's Birthday

    George Washington is honored for his efforts to create

    a new nation dedicated to the rights of the people. He was com-

    mander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary

    War. In 1789, he was inaugurated as the first president of the

    2014 UGES Spelling Bee Results

    Congratulations to all of the spelling bee

    participants. A special congratulations goes to Maddie

    Vogel-8th grade, (3rd place), Samantha Gilboy-7th grade,

    (2nd place), and Katy McCarthy-8th grade, (1st place)!

    This will be the third year in a row for Katy! Way to go!

    Katy will now go on to compete in the regional bee. Good

    Here’s What’s Happening in February at Graham Public

    Library

    Read to Achieve Read to Achieve at Graham Public Library in Union

    Grove sponsored by the Milwaukee Bucks is going on

    now! Readers in grades 3-10 can get a free voucher to a

    Bucks game just for reading 500 pages. Come into the

    library to get a reading folder to keep track of pages read.

    Read to Achieve a free Bucks ticket! Reading folders

    must be turned in by Wednesday, February 27th.

    Preschool Story Time will be held Tuesday mornings at

    10:00 AM.

    Feb. 11th-Nursery Rhymes

    Feb. 18th – Let’s Eat!

    Feb. 25th – Cuddle Up: Blankets

    This program is designed for children 2-4 with an adult/

    caregiver. Preschool Story Time includes simple stories,

    songs, finger plays, and movement for the "active" set.

    Pre-registration is not required.

    Family Story Time The second Thursday of the month (Feb. 13th) at 6:30 PM,

    join Ms. Kathy for Family Story Time. These sessions are

    for any age and any number of family members. This

    “intergenerational story hour” meets the needs of tradi-

    tional and extended families. Families gather at the library

    for stories, songs, crafts, and fun. The theme this month is

    “Unusual Pets”. Registration IS required.

    Lego Lab Family Night will be held Thursday, Feb. 27th

    at 6:30 PM. Let young imaginations work with Legos pro-

    vided by GPL. Registration is required and limited to 20

    children. Children must be accompanied by an adult. No

    drop-offs please.

    Make-N-Take Every Friday between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM stop in

    with your preschooler and make a super simple, self-

    directed art project for free! Supplies and directions are

    provided. Registration not required.

    Hours: Monday - Thursday 9 - 8 PM

    Friday 9 - 5 PM

    Saturday 9 - 3 PM

  • PBS Kids Go Club

    The Kids Go Club is a contest sponsored by Milwaukee Public

    TV to encourage 1st-3rd grade students to write and illustrate

    their own books. This club meets on Thursdays, 2:45-4:00

    PM in the library. Upcoming meeting dates include February

    6, February 13, February 20, February 27, and March 6.

    On Thursday, March 13, 5:00-7:00 PM, we will hold the Kids

    Go Club Celebration/Open House in the UGES Cafeteria.

    Students will share their stories, enjoy refreshments and turn

    in their books. The books are then taken to MPTV studios to

    be judged.

    Thank you to Mrs. Rivest for volunteering her services for this

    terrific program.

    Influenza

    Flu season is upon us and confirmed cases of influenza are on the rise in our area. In order to

    minimize occurrence within the school, we ask that

    you:

    go over proper hand washing techniques with your children and remind them to wash their hands

    frequently. remind them to cover their cough by coughing into

    their elbow or into the inside of their shirt.

    Signs and symptoms of influenza include fever (over

    100 degrees F), severe headache, muscle and body

    aches, exhaustion and dry cough. Children may have

    additional symptoms that are rare in adults such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

    Please be sure to keep your children home if they are

    experiencing any of these symptoms and follow school

    guidelines when getting students back to school after

    Gr. 5-8 Hoops for Heart

    Hoops for Heart will be held this year on Friday,

    March 7th for students in grades 5-8. The 5th and

    6th grade event will be held from 9:00-11:30 AM and

    the seventh and eighth from 12:30-2:45 PM. Jump, Shoot,

    Save!

    Students need to raise a minimum in pledge money of $10

    to attend the event. All students reaching this minimum lev-

    el will receive admission to the event, an event t-shirt, and

    a Bucks ticket. Our goal is to raise over $6000 again this

    year. Students wishing to participate in the 3 on 3 portion of

    the event must raise a minimum of $60 per team and fill out

    a team registration form. See Mr. Hansen if you have any

    questions.

    Get the entire family involved! Clean out your closets and

    go to any participating Goodwill Store & Donation Center

    between Tuesday, April 1st and Wednesday, April 30th.

    The school with the greatest number of items donated will

    receive a visit from Donald Driver. It’s that easy! This is

    a great way to give back to your community and help the

    environment too!

    If you are taking your own items to the Goodwill store,

    PLEASE MAKE SURE TO ASK FOR THE SPECIAL

    SLIP! Fill out the slip, and INSERT IN THE SPECIAL

    BOX! Otherwise, we will not receive credit.
