Me atrevería a decir que el Live Aqua es una especie de palacio personalizado en el cual todos los que se pasean en él son los dueños del lugar, y que, rodeados de opciones para explotar sus propios sentidos se deleitan con una experiencia sublime. Por ejemplo, el Spa Aqua es una de las mejores opciones para ello. Solo falta entrar al spa para, desde la vis-ta, relajarse con el mudo de posibilidades que éste ofrece. Quizás uno puede ponerse una mascarilla de lodo para limpiarse el cutis y re-lajar el rostro, mientras recibe un tratamiento personalizado. O quizás uno puede entrar al agua cálida del mismo spa y soltar el cuerpo, mientras el agua masajea los músculos y el so-nido arrulla la atmósfera.

Las opciones son múltiples, y todas con-figuran un mundo redondo en el cual no hay manera de no mejorar el espíritu. Live A qua es palaciego, hay gente, movimiento, pero siempre hay intimidad. No hay nada que in-terrumpa el ritmo vital de cada persona; al contrario: todo apunta a reforzarlo desde dis-tintos flancos.

El Spa Aqua está abierto de nueve de la mañana a nueve de la noche, tiempo perfecto para ir, entrar, salir y regresar cuantas veces sea necesario. De hecho, éste ofrece diversos tratamientos, como el Luces de Marocco, el cual se rige en un aceite especial extraido del Argán, un árbol cuyo origen se inscribe preci-samente de aquella zona africana.

También está el Masaje Sueco, un clási-co avocado a la relajación muscular. El Baño

Aromavédico es otra opción singular; como su nombre lo indica, este baño está inspirado en las técnicas ayurvédicas, las cuales son aplica-das según el dosha de cada persona; es decir, los humores o aires vitales de cada ser humano (léase el temperamento y los principios meta-bólicos). Asimismo, está el Fango Masaje, he-cho con estractos de mar, cristales de sal y ba-rro marino. Este masaje es ideal para vitaminar la piel del cuerpo, para eliminar toxinas y ge-nerar energía. Las opciones son interminables.

Otra de ellas es el también clásico Baño de Leche, basado (como su nombre lo sugiere) en un concentrado de proteína de leche y en un espíritu que se remonta al antiguo Egipto y a la bella y siempre joven Cleopatra, deidad famosa por su enigmática belleza. Así, pues, el Live Aqua es un parénetesis dentro de otro paréntesis, y justo por eso un camino al estado de relajación total.

Por donde quiera que uno vaya habrá estí-mulo tras estímulo que hipnotizarán el estado de ánimo. Y esto es un privilegio que no es fácil de encontrar. Una vez que se visita este lugar se entenderá por qué no se tratra de un hotel cualquiera, y se podrá apreciar que la dedica-ción y el diseño cuentan mucho más de lo que uno se espera.

Our pool could easily be mistaken with the sea itself. The infinity pool, much like our spa, is unique in the sense that one need only submerge themselves into it to realize this is not just any pool. Its color is Caribbe-an-blue and the view gives off the feeling of swimming in the vast ocean.

Y no es para menos, puesto que estos recursos arquitectónicos no sólo ofrecen espacio, sino una vista privilegiada del lugar que los sostiene. Así, no hay nada más adecuado para un lugar que pareciera es-tar sobrevolando el mar caribeño que el nom-bre mezzanine. Me refiero, por supuesto, al Ho-tel Mezzanine, uno de los 25 mejores hoteles en México según el Traveller’s Choice 2015.

Este sitio sin duda alguna está hecho con un espíritu que permite mirar el mundo des-de un lugar especial, y con esto no sólo hago alusión a la vista caribeña que contorna al ho-tel, sino al hotel mismo, postrado en uno de los mejores emplazamientos que pudiera uno imaginarse para apreciar la paleta de azules y la tranquilidad que se respira un lugar privile-giado. Hotel Mezzanine es, pues, un sitio refi-nado que vive en armonía con la naturaleza y, sobre todo, sencillo. Así, mientras su esencia es minimalista, la calidad de vida que puede experimentarse en él es abundante; esto, por supuesto, es algo que sólo podrán corroborar quienes coman ahí, ya que en el Hotel Mezza-nine está Dim Geefay, una de las celebridades del mundo de la cocina, y una de las estrellas del sabor tai.

Dim Geefay diseñó un menú especial para los visitantes de este restaurante; de tal forma que comer ahí es viajar a Bangkok, Tailandia, mientras se siente cómo la temperatura de Tulum golpea el rostro. Comer los platillos de Dim Geefay implica dejarse llevar por una com-plejidad de sabores muy difícil de descifrar, un mundo de sensaciones entrelazadas que nunca pueden separarse. Por eso, y lo digo de una vez, el Hotel Mezzanine no es para quedarse un día, y mucho menos el restaurante. Ambos son lugares que hay que vivir con calma, que deben de explorarse y recorrerse una y otra vez. Hotel Mezzanine se combinan dos varian-tes formidables: el paisaje y el sabor. Para mí, el caribe es uno de los lugares más má-gicos del planeta; y la comida tailandesa es una de las mejores combinaciones que nos ofrece el continente asiático, ya que ésta puede ser dulce, agridulce, condimentada, picante y lo que le sigue. Del coco al pes-cado. De la tierra al agua. De las hierbas al curry.

Además, y por si fuera poco, los ingre-dientes con los que se elabora la alquimia de la cocina de Dim Geefay están sembra-dos en el mismo hotel, razón por al cual ya no hay mucho más que pedir: todo es un sistema cerrado, un microcosmos, un clima local ubicuo y autosuficiente en el que se puede estar en la península de Yucatán por un lado y en la península de Malaca por otro, y simultáneamente, por supuesto. En otras palabras: “Tai-landia” quiere decir “tierra-libre”; y “tai”, puntualmente, quiere decir “libre”. De tal forma que no podría haber nada más ad hoc que estar en un sitio sin ataduras, frente a la liber-tad de la naturaleza, y comer comida tai, comida libre. Y esto francamente me hace pensar que cuando uno está en situacio-nes como esas podría parecer incluso que la vida es redundante. Por eso, como bien dijo el nórdico Henrik Ibsen, pluma del ma-ravilloso Peer Gynt y Casa de muñecas: “la belleza es el acuerdo entre el contenido y la forma”; esta frase, me parece, debería de ser el lema de Mezzanine, porque ya hi-cieron todo lo demás. “Comida Tai, paisaje mexicano (y “lema noruego”) son variantes dignas de Thor Heyerdahl, otro noruego, al igual que Ibsen, un expedicionario que recientemente volvió a estar en boca de algunos después del estreno de Kon tiki, una película que se centra en el viaje que realizó, en 1947, Thor Heyerdahl para de-mostrar que la población de Polinesia pro-venía de Perú.

La teoría de Heyerdahl sostiene que un grupo de la población del Perú viajó 8000 kilómetros en una balsa diminuta, llevados por las corrientes y el viento, hasta llegar a las lejanas islas oceánicas. La aventura de Heyerdahl fue épica, y su premio inigua-lable. In situations like this, life can sometimes seem redundant. As Henrik Ibsen, the famed Norwegian playwright once wrote, “beauty is the agreement between content and form.” Seeing as they’ve already done the rest, this quote should be Hotel Mezzanine’s motto. “Thai food, Mexican landscape (and a “Norwegian motto?”) are variants worthy of Thor Heyerdahl, another Nor-wegian, recently in vogue due the premier of Kon Tiki, a movie centered around his 1947 travels in Peru that aimed to prove the origin of Polynesian people.

Heyerdahl sustained that a group of Peruvians travelled 8,000 kilometers in a small raft, guided only by wind and water, to reach said Polynesian islands. Heyerdahl’s adventure was epic and his reward unmatched. The Norwegian ex-plorer experienced a feeling that no one else has ever shared, and it culminated in paradise, surrounded by succulent prizes. Even though one needn’t reach Hotel Mezannine by raft, the reward is kind of the same.

Calle 13 es el nombre de uno de los grupos más sonados de los últimos años. Los trujilla-nos, quienes conquistaron al mundo y el cora-zón de no pocas adolescentes y veinteañeras de su continente, han marcado la pauta en la histo-ria de la música. Y esto no deja de ser admirable en muchos sentidos.

En primer lugar, claro, en el sentido del fe-nómeno musical, y en segundo, en el sentido urbano de la relación de las calles con sus habi-tantes. Vamos por partes: las calles de nuestros continentes han sido un homenaje a personajes ilustres, héroes revolucionarios o de la indepen-dencia que nunca podrán ser olvidados. Sin em-bargo, y aunque estamos rodeados de héores, hay calles que simplemente obtienen el nombre de un número, como sucede con esta: trece.

In Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, there is a street that few have walked but millions have heard of, Calle 13 —13th Street in English. Most people that have heard of the eponymous reggaeton band are unaware that it’s named after a street in this town.

Calle 13 is one the most popular bands in recent years. The Trujillan-based out-fit has conquered the hearts and minds of many young women on the continent and has etched out its spot in music history. This is a formidable feat on many fronts.

Firsty, in a musical sense, but also in an urban one in how streets form bonds with their inhabitants. The streets of our continent are usually named after il-lustrious men of history, revolutionaries or freedom fighters that must never be forgotten. However, even though we are surrounded by heroes, there are streets that simply get a number, like the number thirteen.

As such, certain streets serve as a form of homage to an important figure. Others have a simple name but are in themselves honored by important figures. However, my purpose here is not discuss Calle 13 but actually 12th Street, another Carib-bean artery that is famous not for produc-ing stars but rather because of what it has become, despite it’s name: 12th.

I’m talking about the main street in Playa del Carmen: 12th Street. The back-bone of a cosmopolitan atmosphere set in the Mexican Caribbean. Any visitor with designs of strolling around with an ice cream, sitting down for a cup of coffee, or having a drink will have to visit 12th Street.

Anyone who’s ever been to Playa will know I’m telling the truth. 12th Street is a strategic spot for any visitor. And the strategic spot within said strategic spot is Hotel InFashion —a beautifully de-signed hotel right in the heart of town. Its roof garden boasts one of the best views in Playa del Carmen, seeing as it is the tallest building in town.

Casting Sky Lounge is where one must go to lie in a beach chair and take a nap. Afterwards one may dive in the pool and rest while they sip on a delicious cocktail. Así, hay calles que sirven para, con su nom-bre, homenajear a alguien. Y hay calles, como ésta, cuyo nombre no tiene chiste alguno pero que ha sido homenajeada por personajes ilus-tres. Pero no nos distraigamos, porque yo de lo que quiero hablar no es de Calle 13, sino de Calle 12, otra arteria emblemática en el caribe; emblemática no porque de ella haya salido al-guna estrella, sino por lo que se ha convertido, muy a pesar de su nombre: doce.

Me refiero a la calle principal de Playa del Carmen, Calle 12, columna vertebral del am-biente cosmopolita del caribe mexicano. Quien va a Playa del Carmen a pasearse con un helado forzosamente pasa por esta calle, quien va a tomarse un café, y lo mismo quien va a beber, etcétera.

Quien visite esta calle sabrá que no estoy mintiendo. Calle 12 es el lugar estratégico del visitante de Playa. Y el lugar estratégico den-tro del lugar estratégico es el Hotel InFashion, un sitio deliciosamente diseñado que hay que conocer. Su roof garden tiene la mejor vista de Playa del Carmen, puesto que es el edificio mas alto de la ciudad.

Así, el Casting Sky Lounge es donde hay que subir a tirarse en un camastro y dormir una siesta; esto, claro, para después meterse a la al-berca y relajarse mientras se bebe un clamato. En el InFashion puede estarse en el cielo de la región y bajar directamente al Canibal Royal, bar playero hecho con un abanico de sillas y muebles que remiten a un mundo orgánico con-ceptual; el brasil de los 50’s.

En InFashion no se aceptan niños, y nada contra ellos: simplemente se acepta que —diría yo— se está en un último modelo que aún no puede ser conducido por alguien sin experien-cia. Ahí, justamente, y no sólo por su nombre, sino por sus elegantes adecuaciones, suelen ha-cerse encuentros de moda, con lo cual el hotel se transforma en un sitio de ensueño, una bur-buja playera muy difícil de encontrar. InFashion es una especie de palacio que, cobijado por la hermosa Playa del Carmen, siempre resulta ser la mejor opción para estar.

DE TAL FORMA que, en Perú, Inti ha engullido a otro dios, al dios de la creación, a Viracocha. Inti es quien arroja luz sobre la vida, el padre de los incas. Y los incas, por cierto, son una cul-tura original; es decir, no vienen de otra cultura, como muchas otras, sino de ellos mismos, y tienen a un dios solar, que no es de nadie más que de ellos. Y lo mismo sucede con los egipcios: ellos también son una cultura compleja y primigénea que, por supuesto, tiene un dios del sol: Ra. El dios Ra es inconfundible, pero sobre todo se reconoce al medio día, cuando los rayos apremian sobre las márgenes del desierto africano del Sahara, cuando la fuerza está en el cenit y nadie puede esconderse del esplendor divino de Ra, quien es dueño del horizonte y es asociado a los halcones, sus emisarios ópticos. Y es que, como tal, los egipcios creen en el poder del ojo de los halcones, capaces de vislumbrar todo des-de las alturas. El halcón es la contraparte femenina del dios. Para los egipcios el ojo del halcón es el otro ojo. Así, mientras el ojo del sol quema y es poderoso, el ojo del halcón es sutil y vivaz. Y algo similar sucede con Tonatiuh, dios del sol de otra cultura primigénea: los aztecas.

Considering the fact that the Mayan Riviera is a loca-tion that was governed by a mystical and observant culture, the Ahau Tulum hotel is designed to honor this history and re-spect the surrounding nature. Cuando uno cami-na por la playa del hotel puede ver cómo de entre el verde de las copas de algunos árboles sobre-salen los techos de las rústicas chozas; y así, por ejemplo, palpar el diálogo intermitente entre la ar-quitectura y la naturaleza del lugar. Así, mientras el viento golpea amablemente el follaje de ambas construcciones, la natural y la articifial, uno puede caminar un poco más sobre la arena y postrarse en una hamaca para esperar el atardecer.

Por eso se puede hacer una fogata fácilmente y sentir que se está en una atmósfera totalmente agreste, pero sentarse en un cómodo tablón de madera barnizada. Y lo mismo se puede tomar un baño delicioso en el mar, y desués ir a la cabaña para sentir cómo el agua de la regadera se lleva la arena del cuerpo y luego cenar como se debe. El Ahau Tulum es un lugar cosmopolita en el que cabe todo mun-do, ya que su ambiente natural nos recuerda que menos es más. De hecho, los fundadores de este sitio son asimismo de muchas partes del planeta. De ahí que el balance que puede encontrarse en este hotel sea plural. Escaping routine is a passion of mine, alongside film and literature. To visit magical places is the reward we find in a life filled with the hustle of everyday affaires. To combine magic and passion is the greatest pleasure in my life.

The spot evokes Daniel Defoe’s, “Robin-son Crusoe”, which in turn was inspired by the life of Alejandro Selkirk who lived on a deserted island for 4 years and 4 months. I remember feeling trapped and anxious when finishing the story. This is no coincidence seeing as before me lies a scenery as breath-taking as the one I pictured when reading that book.

Escapar de los padres a temprana edad por el ansia incontrolable de aventu-ra como lo hizo Robinson Crusoe, caer en una isla aparentemente desierta en la que debe convertirse en un solitario sobrevi-viente y descubrir de esta manera el senti-do de la vida hacen de su historia una de mis favoritas. Retorno con mi imaginación al siglo XVIII donde el anhelo colectivo es de libertad, felicidad y obsesión por el destino y empatizo con el desbordamiento de sentimientos y vehemencia de los ro-mánticos de la época, me siento atrapa-

da y conmovida ante la idealización de la naturaleza y pasión por los viajes de los poetas y narradores. Observo a mi alrede-dor y me embeleso con lo irresistible del paisaje e imagino cuan semejate podría ser con los escenarios de aquellas historias fantastícas.

En mi habitación resulta muy fácil y hasta seductor confiar en el destino, despe-jar la mente de sobresaltos y entender fácil-mente el sueño de Robinson: Unir su vida al infinito mar, el cual puedo vislumbrar sin di-ficultad y gran emoción por la ventana y en momentos disentir entre la realidad y la fan-tasia. Wrapped in a rustic setting that lets me experience a uto-pian life surrounded by fresh air, I think of the difficulties faced by those in shipwrecks. Paradoxically, I observe and am pleasantly sheltered by the simplicity of my room, I can’t deny that I allow myself to be draped in its comfort even if I fantasize about a life of adventure on the open sea —Azulik know how to pamper its guests. I’m in paradise, when night falls, as I sit on my terrace, I feel the delicate mist brush up against the stars and I hear the seagulls as they serenade my visit. I’m overwhelmed by an infinite sense of peace and tranquility.

In the evening, with an exotic cocktail in hand, I feel a gentle tub call me, inviting me to submerge myself in it —to daydream and enjoy my imagination, to fly to places filled with adventure where others have built dreams and left their mark. I’m hypnotized with the renewed energy, minutes pass seam-lessly, I don’t miss electricity, phones, and other worldly concerns. The complicit silence lets me drape myself in the sounds of nature as I melt into the night.

I wake at the crack of dawn to the sound of birds chirping. I see paradise before me and take a casual stroll on the beach. I enjoy my stay and run away with my imagination.

ES MUY conocido el miedo al tába-no, ya que éste es un insecto que cuando ronda por la alberca los niños, al verlo, se sumergen en el agua, contienen la respi-ración y ruegan al cielo para que el bicho siga volando en busca de más víctimas. Y es que el tábano es una especie de vampirito: chupa sangre, y por eso su picadura duele, porque está diseñada para hincar el diente fuertemente, en las vacas o los caballos. Pero esta vez la historia es otra, porque Tá-bano es un restaurante en el que también dan ganas de sumergirse, pero para comer y, naturalmente, hincar el diente y alimentarse como los grandes.

Tábano es lugar placentero, en donde se puede sentir la respiración de la playa y de la jungla y, quizás, ¿por qué no?, escuhar el sonido nocturno de los insectos que la so-brevuelan de planta en planta. Pero eso es lo de menos, ya que lo que realmente importa en este lugar son las opciones culinarias que pueden encontrarse en él.

Tiene una magnífica carta de vinos, cuya temperatura controlada hace que sean siempre la opción idónea para acompañar la comida. Asimismo, el sabor de sus platillos

siempre tiene un toque que los distingue, ya que cada uno tiene un matiz especialmente diseñado por el chef. Es perfecto para pro-bar comida mexicana de diferentes estilos. En pocas palabras, se trata de un restauran-te sofisticado que mantiene la elegancia de lo natural.

Uno de los principales atractivos de este lugar es el Festival del Octavo Arte, que es un encuentro anual en el que se reúnen enó-logos, mixólogos y chefs de alto calibre, to-dos, para diseñar cocteles y platillos y, sobre todo, para plantear un esquema en el cual el buen comer y el buen vivir son el eje rector de la vida. Así, el Tábano es ya una marca re-gistrada en el mundo de la gastronomía, y es una referencia tanto para los locales como para los visitantes.

The horsefly —the English trans-lation of, “tábano”— is a famously feared insect. Whenever it approaches a pool, children will submerge, hold their breath, and pray that the horsefly leave as soon as possible —let it find victims elsewhere. The horsefly is a form of small vampire: it sucks blood and hence has a painful bite. Its very nature is designed to have a sharp bite so it may pierce into cows and horses. But today we’re here to tell a different sto-ry, seeing as Tábano is a restaurant where one also feels like diving in — but to eat, sinking our teeth into dishes and dining like kings.

AQUÍ, EN México, hay quienes dicen que la langosta se come más en Francia o Es-tados Unidos, mientras que en México se usa generalmente para alburear, lo cual (hay que reconocerlo) puede ser un exageración. De cualquier modo, hay sitios donde se pueden olvidar esas observaciones, como Cancún, donde la langosta no falta.

A la orilla del agua, Crab House es el sitio perfecto para deleitarse con ese su-culento animal, una de las especialidades del lugar; esto, claro, además de lo que su nombre indica: los cangrejos, mismos cuyas versiones gastronómicas abundan. Siempre he pensado que tanto los cangrejos como las langostas son alimentos que deben comerse en horarios especiales, ya que no son cual-quier comida: estos hacen referencias a un estilo de vida ocioso (en el buen sentido de la palabra) y placentero.

comer. Por eso, digo yo, las langostas y los cangrejos deben de ser disfrutados a deshoras; es decir, al atarde-cer o a medio día, cuando el mundo está en otro lugar, y cuando la vida nos pertenece. Y en el Crab House hay que seguir esta regla, ya que pareciera estar hecho a la medida de esa consideración.

Quizás quienes diseñaron este lugar estaban cons-cientes de ello, y por eso decidieron emplazar el restau-rante a lado de la laguna, donde pueden apreciarse los mejores atardeceres de Cancún mientras el agua, como una tabla congelada, recibe la luz y cambia de color. O probablemente la ubicación del restaurante se trate una coincidencia (honestamente lo dudo), pero lo que sí, es que el lugar ahí está, dueño del mejor punto para ver el atardecer cuando éste se come las horas y uno come a deshoras. Y lo mismo podría decirse del vino blanco, bebida con la que uno debe empezar a calentar el estómago mientras se cocinan los crustáceos.

El vino blanco es para beberse lentamente, frío. Y esto tiene que ver con todo. Cuando algo está frío es porque sus moléculas de agua no pueden moverse tan rápido como si estuvieran calientes. Las cosas frías son cosas que están de alguna manera detenidas en el tiem-po. Así, cuando el vino blanco esta frío, debe de respe-tarse su naturaleza y, por lo tanto, como si se quisiera entablar una empatía con sus moléculas ralentizadas, beberlo muy lentamente. Y esto, digo yo, sólo puede ha-cerse a deshoras, cuando el tiempo no puede perseguir-nos. Y debe hacerse, insisto, si se tiene un crustáceo en un futuro muy cercano.

El Crab House es el lugar. Tiene un diseño que dia-loga con la laguna Nichupté. Como en un zigzag que se abre y cierra ante el agua para recibir las embarcaciones, la madera donde están colocadas las mesas se bambolea para jugar con el espacio, tal y como lo hace la luz y la sombra que el sol mueve como si fuera un titiritero y como lo hace Kukulkan, palabra que designa a la ser-piente maya y a la avenida donde está el Crab House.

No hay persona que vaya a Cancún sin que reciba mi recomendación de este magnífico restaurante, cuyos pla-tos casi siempre estarán rojos-cangrejo, por su comida, al igual que su cielo, rojo-atardecer. Hay que hacerse un tiempo y olvidarse del tiempo para ir a la que sin duda alguna es una de las mejores opciones de Cancún, Crab House.

preciate the Cancun sunsets. As the light hits the water and changes colors, mak-ing for a lovely meal. Even though I doubt it, the restaurants’ location is perhaps a coincidence, but either way, it’s in an enviable piece of real estate to be able to appreciate the beauty of the Mexican Ca-ribbean. And what better way to enjoy it then to start off with a perfect, tall glass of chilled white wine.

White wine should be enjoyed slowly and chilled. For something to be cold it means its molecules aren’t in the same frenetic haste as when it’s warm. Some-thing that’s cold is inherently frozen in time. As such, when white wine is cool, we must respect its nature and drink it at a leisurely pace. This, in my opinion, can only be done in off-hours, when time has no chance of catching up with us and hearty seafood is in our near-future.

Crab House is the spot. Its design makes it an integral part of Nichupté lake. Like a zig-zag that opens and closes to re-ceive incoming boats, the wood on which tables are set plays with the surrounding space. The light and shadows serpent around the restaurant like Kukulkan, the mayan serpent and namesake for the street on which the restaurant is located.

I’ll tell anyone set to visit Cancun to visit Crab House. With its deep red plates to match both the shellfish and the color of the sky when the sun sets. We must make time to visit one of Cancun’s pre-miere dining spots, Crab House.

IN Mexico, there are people that say that lobster is a dish more likely served in France or the US. Here in Mexico, they say, lobster is a term more often used in sexual puns —which is of course an exaggera-tion. In any case, there are exceptions to every rule and as far as Mexican lobster goes, Cancun is the place to eat it.

Located right on the waterfront, Crab House is the perfect place to taste this suc-culent fruit of the sea. Lobster is a local specialty along with, as its name suggests, crab dishes which come in many forms. I’ve always thought that both lobster and crab are dishes best enjoyed at spe-cific moments, they’re special that way. They’re the type of food you order when you have the whole afternoon ahead of you to just enjoy.

To eat lobster and/or crab implies not only eating, but eating well. That’s pre-cisely why they must be had at strange times; as noon rolls around or the sun sets. When the world has checked out and our life is our own. At Crab House we must always follow this rule, seeing as the whole restaurant seems to be built around this idea.

Y es que —a pesar de que algunos digan que el golf proviene de un antiguo juego ro-mano llamado Pagánica (el juego de los cam-pesinos), y otros digan que viene de Francia, e incluso de Holanda— el golf es justamente de origen británico, particularmente de Escocia, donde incluso fue prohibido por el parlamento en 1457 por órdenes de Jaime II, rey de Esco-cia, quien consideró que este entretenimiento iba en contra de los intereses de la nación.

Así, el golf fue prohibido; pero despúes volvió con todo, hasta nuestros días. Es un deporte antiquísimo, y como tal ha cosechado un sinfín de técnicas, anécdotas y palabras. El golf es una cultura. Hay que saber tener un swing. Hay que saber vestirse. Hay que saber colocar el talón, equilibrar el cuerpo y mover la cintura. Hay que tener ojos de águila. Etcéte-ra. Y también hay que saber escojer los palos, y hay que fabricarlos bien, personalizarlos. Y lo mismo sucede con los campos de golf: hay que saber caminarlos, entenderlos y al mismo tiempo cuidarlos y diseñarlos. Por eso es im-portante reconocer cuando hay un campo de golf de caildad.

It’s an attitude towards life that makes us dress properly, have a sense of humor, and do things how we were meant to. Composure is, naturally, a British invention. They are by nature a composed people, the inventors of suspicion, calculus in all its variations —including the one we owe to Newton. It’s a feline attitude that measures and executes actions while sporting a tweed jacket and smoking a pipe.

While some claim golf stems from an an-tique Roman game played by peasants, and some say it comes from France, or even Hol-land, golf is of Scottish origin. At one point, in 1457, it was even outlawed by James II, King of Scotland, who thought golf was not in the nation’s best interest.

As such, golf was prohibited but remerged and exists to this day. An ancient sport that has generated endless forms of technique, anecdotes and its own special lingo. Golf, in essence, is its own culture. You need to master your swing. You need to know how to dress. You need to know how to place your ankle, balance your body, and rotate your waist. You must develop an eagle eye and know how to pick a club. Clubs need to be properly fashioned and personalized —as do golf courses. ES BIEN SABIDO que los cenotes encierran muchos misterios. Son una especie de estación en la inmensa red subterránea de agua que circula bajo la tierra de la península de Yucatán. Fueron lugar de sacrificios mayas que, incluso, esconden tesoros. Los cenotes son un oasis dentro del paraiso del Cari-be mexicano. Son lugares perfectos para bucear o incluso chapotear: todo depen-de de a cuál se vaya, cómo y con quién. Por supuesto, son sitios con flora y fauna propia. Así, en ellos podemos encontrar al pez ciego, fósiles de coral, sirénidos y una infinidad de seres vivos y rastros de ellos.

Entrar a un cenote es suspenderse en un silencio en el cual se siente, bajo los pies, una profundidad impalpable; y eso es mágico: los cenotes son enigmáticos por dónde se les vea. Algunos están ro-deados por cascadas, mientras que en su interior corre un río; otros están rodeados

It’s well known that cenotes1 encapsulate many myster-ies. They are each a station in an immense network of underwater caves that lie within the Yucatan peninsula. They were at one-point places of sacrifice in the Mayan culture and are also known to hide treasures. Cenotes are an oasis within the paradise that is the Mexican Caribbean. They are ideal spots for swimming and diving, depending on which cenote you visit and with whom.

por el verde y su interior es azul; y otros son negros, negros y profundos. Así, po-dría hacerse una enciclopedia del cenote, un documento colorido lleno de historia y preguntas; de humanidades y ciencia. Los cenotes son formaciones únicas debido al tipo de suelo de la región, y por eso, por su unicidad, quien vaya a la Penísnula de Yucatán tendrá que aprovechar la oportu-nidad, visitarlos y enterarse aunque sea un poco al respecto. Hay dos cenotes ya muy conocidos por su belleza: el cenote Cristal y el cenote Escondido. El primero, el Cris-tal, está muy cerca de Tulum, aproximada-mente a unos 3 kilómetros de distancia. Este lugar no es la clásica circunferencia que caracteriza a los cenotes, sino que tie-ne una forma extraña que, justo por eso, ofrece distintas posibilidades al visitante.

Cuenta la leyenda que en él los mayas arrojaron sus tesoros para que no fueran capturados por los invasores durante la Guerra de Castas. Aunque claro, hay que decir que hoy día dificilmente se encontra-rán esos tesoros por ahí; pero sí pueden encontrarse una variedad de animales, los cuales se deslizan entre el agua mientras explora amablemente su entorno. Es un lugar ideal para ir con niños, ya que el ce-note tiene muchas zonas amigables.

Naturally, the boast impressive flora and fauna. We find within them many types of fish such as the pez ciego, fossilized coral, sirenia, and an infinity of other species.

Entering a cenote is to suspend oneself in a piercing silence. You feel an impalpa-ble depth beneath your feet that gives you a sense of magic. They are enigmatic, no matter where you see them from. Waterfalls surround some; some have rivers that run through them; and others are engulfed in vegetation. Some are blue and some are a deep form of black. An encyclopedia could be fashioned just for cenotes. A colorful docu-ment filled with history and questions posed to science and history. Cenotes are unique formations due to the type of ground that ex-ists in the region. As such, any visitor to the area must make time to see visit at least one. There are two well-known cenotes that stand out on account of their beauty: cenote Cristal and cenote Escondido. The former, Cristal, is approximately 3 kilometers from Tulum and has a unique shape that sets it apart from other cenotes.

Legend has it that during the Caste Wars

of Yucatan, the Mayans hid their treasures there. Although said treasures are long since gone, we can still find a variety of fau-na that swims through its waters, exploring its terrain. It’s an ideal family stop as it has an endless array of kid-friendly zones.

The cenote Escondido, which is also close to Tulum, is more of an adult desti-nation seeing as its waters run deeper —17 meters versus Cristal’s 5. Said depth means a greater variety of animals and allows for underwater diving. The visitor can easily explore them seeing as light reaches the depths and allows anyone to appreciate the variety of colors and textures.

Cenote Cristal and cenote Escondido are but two sights we recommend due to their beauty and accessibility. However, the Mayan region plays hosts to almost two thousand “water caverns” or ts’ono’ot as the Mayans call them. To visit any is to have an adventurous spirit, seeing as one must make their way into the jungle. These two, however, are fairly visitor friendly. One thing is for sure, visiting at least one cenote is something that cannot be missed.

El otro cenote, el Escondido, es un poco más “adulto”, por decirlo de alguna manera, ya que si el cenote de Cristal tiene en pro-medio cinco metros de profundidad, éste, el Escondido, tiene diecisiete. Este cenote está también cerca de Tulum. Por su profundidad pueden apreciarse más especies animales y, por supuesto, puede bucearse un poco más adentro: sobre todo, el visitante pue-de sumergirse en las cuevas que esconde el lugar, las cuales no son del todo obscuras, sino todo lo contrario, luminosas, ya que es-tán estocadas por claros de luz que permi-ten apreciar tanto el interior de las mismas como los colores que las atraviesan.

Cenote Cristal y cenote Escondido son sólo dos recomendaciones, dos cenotes fa-mosos por su belleza y, también, accesibles. La región maya alberga prácticamente dos mil “cavernas con agua”, dos mil ts’ono’ot, como los nombran los mayas. Visitar algu-nos obligatoriamente implicará un espíritu muy aventurero, ya que habrá que adentrar-se en la selva; pero hay otros, como los que aquí recomiendo, que, además de mante-ner su magia natural, pueden visitarse sin mayor problema. Visitar los cenotes es una actividad que no puede dejarse de lado por ningún motivo.

COZUMEL ES TAN IMPORTANTE QUE FUE EL PREÁMBULO DEL VIAJE QUE HERNÁN CORTÉS TUVO ANTES DE VENIR A MÉXICO

COZUMEL ES una islita al este de la Península de Yucatán. Es una isla que, a mi parecer, siempre a tenido la forma de acento y que, mejor aún, siempre ha sido como el acento de la península. Se trata, como toda buena isla, de un lugar en me-dio de la nada y en medio de todo. Su agua e identidad no son del todo caribeñas, sino antillanas; o al contrario, no son del todo antillanas, sino caribeñas: todo depende, y ahí radica uno de sus atractivos. Se trata de una porción de tierra empotrada en un mundo exhuberante y sutil. Cozumel es tan importante que fue el preámbulo del viaje que Hernán Cortés tuvo antes de venir a México: fue ahí en Cozumel donde éste, gracias a Juan de Grijalva, hizo su primera parada antes de emprender la conquista de México.

Cozumel is an island that lies east of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is an island that, in my mind, has always had the shape of an accent. Very fitting as it serves precisely that purpose on the peninsula as a whole. Like any good island, it is a place in the middle of noth-ing and everything. Its waters and its identity are neither fully Caribbean nor fully Antillean. It all depends on where we’re looking from —therein lies its brilliance. It’s a stretch of land anchored in a world of exuberance and sub-tlety. Cozumel is so important as it served as a stepping-stone in Hernan Cortés’ journey to Mexico. It was there that, thanks to Juan de Grijalva, Cortés made his first stop on his way to carry out his conquista.

brave and adventurous. Without Grijalva and Cozumel, some say history would have turned out differently —although this is most likely said to increase the destination’s allure. In ad-dition to boasting the kind of personality only allotted to land with great historical relevance, Cozumel is so much more. Apart from its ex-tensive beachfront, Cozumel boasts one of the largest coral reef’s in the world. It is so impres-sive that it caught the eye of Jacques Cousteau who, on board the Calypso, couldn’t resist the spot’s natural beauty and explored it to share it with the world. Although Cozumel literally means, “the land of swallows”, one could not be faulted for referring to it as the “song of the mermaid” as it possesses the same enchanting quality.

It is the second largest island in the country in terms of population and the third in size —it is no small place. It has 27 different forms of native vertebrate species, amongst which we find the picasombra lizard or the pygmies rac-coon, as well as a wide variety of indigenous sea creatures. Likewise, Cozumel boasts lakes that are like an island within an island. In the northeast corner of the island we find the Chankanab Lake which is a form of marine superhighway due to the many different kinds of fish that circulate in it. Seeing as this is Co-zumel, which boasts an impressive fauna in itself, this is no small compliment. Close by we find botanical gardens which also cannot be missed when visiting.

In short, Cozumel is an island filled with surprises. One of Mexico’s premier destinations which has been spared from the total invasion of big hotels and still has many kilometers of deserted beachfront on either coast. Actually, one of the best ways to enjoy the island and feel its freedom is to hop in a car and ride along the deserted beachfront —after having applied sunblock, of course. The highway has a spec-tacular view that stimulates the senses every step of the way. Every second on it allows the Caribbean and its tranquility to wash over us. And when it does, who knows, you just might bump into a native lizard and be wrapped up in the Caribbean-Antillean mix.

Cozumel is a place where you can’t find the word “rush” in the dictionary —that’s back on the mainland, as it should be. Cozumel is dominated by time, and each moment contains beauty that goes back millennia. This is why we must make the time and surrender to the island. Both the island, and its swallows, will take it from there.


Juan de Grijalva fue uno de los hom-bres más importantes de Cortés, fue uno de sus hombres clave, valientes y aventu-reros: sin Juan de Grijalva y sin Cozumel, dicen algunos, la historia sería distinta. Aunque en realidad probablemente esto sólo signifique aumentar el drama del destino, el cual a veces es inexorable. Pero Cozumel, además de tener la personalidad de uno de esos pequeños grandes fac-tores de la historia, tiene mucho más. Y no me refiero a los kilometros de playa, sino a uno de los arrecifes coralinos más grandes y por lo tanto especiales del mun-do, al arrecife que cautivó al emblemático Jacques Cousteau, quien, quizás a bordo del Calypso, tampoco pudo resistirse ante la naturaleza del lugar y la exploró a más no poder hasta proyectarla al mundo. Co-zumel quiere decir “tierra de las golondri-nas”. Pero también podría decirse, pese a su nombre, que Cozumel es, por mucho, el canto de la sirena, el lugar para ser hipno-tizado por la naturaleza marina.

Es la segunda isla más poblada del país, y la tercera más grande. Vamos, no se trata de un lugar pequeño ni mucho menos. Tiene veintisiete especies verte-bradas endémicas, entre las que destacan la Lagartija picasombra o el Mapache ena-no, y especies marinas que también son propias de la zona. Asimismo, en Cozumel hay lagunas que son como una isla den-tro de la isla. Entre ellas está la Laguna de Chankanab, al sur del poblado pero al noroeste de la isla. Esta laguna es una suerte de avenida acuática en la que gran

variedad de peces circulan. Y tratándose de Cozumel (tengo que subrayarlo) esto no es menor: la riqueza de la fauna es enor-me. Además, muy cerca de la laguna hay un jardín botánico que tampoco puede de-jar de ser visitado.

En pocas palabras, Cozumel es una isla llena de sorpresas, se trata de un atractivo clásico de México, pero afortunadamente no está colonizado por los grandes hote-les, que los hay, sino que aún mantiene kilómetros prácticamente vírgenes al este y oeste de la isla en los que puede reco-rrerse el blanco de la arena y el azul del mar. De hecho, quizás la mejor opción para disfrutar la isla sea tomar todos los aditamentos posibles para sumergirse en el mar, y para protegerse del sol, y subir-se a un coche recorrer la isla y sus playas vírgenes. Hacer esto genera un sentimien-to de libertad incomparable. La carretera tiene una vista panorámica que estimula cada segundo, ya que pareciera que reco-rrerla es recorrer el infinito del caribe, su sonido y su tranquilidad. Probablemente así uno podrá encontrarse con alguna de las especies endémicas, o con alguna pla-ya paradisiaca que se deja acariciar por el bamboleo caribeño-antillano.

En Cozumel no hay prisa: ésta se que-dó en el continente, ahí debe de perma-necer. En Cozumel el tiempo domina cada instante, cada momento de belleza mile-naria. Por eso hay que tomarse su tiempo y entregarse a la isla. No cabe duda de que ella, con sus golondrinas, sabrá hacer buen uso de él.

Historia, Turismo y Tradición

SIETE AÑOS DESPUÉS de la conquista de Tenochtitlan, el Capitán General y Go-bernador Diego de Mazariegos dominó militarmente parte de la zona sureste de la Nueva España y fundó la Villa Real de Chiapa en el territorio que hasta enton-ces se conocía en lengua indígena como Jo´bel (zacate grande), en 1535 se le otorgó un escudo de armas a la villa y al año siguiente se le dio la categoría de ciudad. En 1543 llegó un fraile dominico de nombre Bartolomé de las Casas con una misión muy especial: poblar la tierra firme, sin derramar sangre y anunciar el evangelio, sin estrépito de armas. Fray Bartolomé de las Casas había sido nombrado previamente por el Cardenal de Castilla “procurador y protector universal de todos los indios” por su renombrada actividad a favor de los nativos de las tierras americanas, frente al dominio feroz y sangriento de algunos conquistadores españoles. Solamente permaneció un par de años en la Ciudad Real de Chiapa, pero fueron suficientes para que dejara una huella profunda de amor por esa tie-rra y sus habitantes, al grado de que, con el paso del tiempo, el nombre de la ciudad fue modificado por el de San Cristóbal (por el santo patrono) de las Casas en honor al fraile dominico.

De ese pasado histórico en el que se mezclaron dos culturas para dar origen a una nueva nación que-dan grandes vestigios que hoy en día forman parte del paisaje urbano y la tradición viva de San Cristó-bal de las Casas, recorrer las calles de esta ciudad es adentrarse en el México profundo, arraigado en costumbres ancestrales, con una presencia indígena

vigente, una historia rica y apasionante y, sobre todo, una creciente importancia en al ámbito turístico.

Uno de los edificios más caracterís-ticos de la ciudad es sin duda la Cate-dral. Construida a partir de 1528 y re-modelada a principios del siglo XVIII, la Catedral de San Cristóbal de Las Casas está dedicada a La Asunción. Su primer párroco fue el obispo Fray Bartolome de las Casas. En el interior se conservan in-teresantes piezas de arte, entre las cua-les destacan dos bellos retablos de estilo barroco salomónico de madera cubiertos de hoja de oro y las pinturas del artis-ta Juan Correa, y esculturas estofadas y policromadas. El estilo de su construc-ción denota un toque barroco austero con detalles mudéjares. Muchos tesoros guarda la Catedral, por lo que se merece una visita detenida.

Otro de los más hermosos ejemplos de la arquitectura virreinal de San Cristó-bal de las Casas es el Templo de Santo Domingo, fundado por el Obispo de Gua-temala Francisco Marroquín al colocar la primera piedra a su paso por Ciudad Real el día 19 de enero de 1547, es muy probable que el conjunto arquitectónico que actualmente conocemos haya sido terminado entre el final del siglo XVII y

Seven years after the conquest of Tenochtitlan, the acting Governor Diego de Mazariegos had secured military dom-ination of the southeast region of what was then known as the New Spain —now Mexico. Therein he founded Villa Real de Chiapa in the site which had hitherto been known as Jo’bel. In 1535 he bestowed it with a shield of arms and the following year elevated it to a full-fledged city. 1543 saw the arrival of Bartolome de las Casas, the Dominican friar. His objective was clear, to populate the area and spread the word of the Gospel without spilling a drop of blood. Bartolome de las Casas was ap-pointed as the “universal protector of the indigenous population” by the Cardenal of Castille due to his defense of natives in the face of violent conquistadors. He only remained for a few years in the the Royal City of Chiapa, but they were enough to leave a lasting imprint of his love for that land and its people, to the point which the city was eventually renamed in his honor as San Cristobal de las Casas.

From that historic past we are left with the merging of two cultures that nowadays help to create the social and architectural landscape that is San Cris-tobal de las Casas. To walk through its streets is to wander into the depths of Mexico, to be engulfed by its ancient cus-toms. A variety of indigenous traditions, a rich and passionate history, and most importantly a growing tourism scene.

One of the city’s most important buildings is the Cathedral. Built in 1528 and remodeled at the beginning of the XVIII century, the local Cathedral is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Its first parson was Barolome de las Casas. Within it we find interesting art pieces, including beautiful baroque woodwork with gold leaf, the paintings of Juan Correa, and many famous sculp-tures. The architectural style is an aus-tere baroque with mudéjar touches. The Cathedral harbors many treasures and as such completely merits a visit.

Another architectural jewel is the Tem-plo de Santo Domingo. It was founded by the Bishop of Guatemala, Francisco Marroquín, who set the first stone when passing through the city on January 19th 1547. The building was most likely finished somewhere between the XVII and XVIII century. As far as the inside of the build-ing, we can remark the barrel vault ceiling which is particular to this building within the city. Its front façade is very representa-tive and finds parallels with some buildings in Oaxaca and Ancient Guatemala. It is the maximum expression of Baroque style in the state of Chiapas. It is highly adorned, to the point of exuberance. Its decoration is reminiscent of certain building in Guate-mala and also Central Mexcio.

A full tour of the city is required to take in its architectural significance. One can’t skip the Arco y Templo del Carmen. Built in 1680, making use of the mudéjar style of the colonial period, this building was part of the Convento de la Encarnación. At one point it was the gateway to the city and to this day it is seen as one of the city’s main emblems. This building, the only one of its kind in Mexico, is considered a great piece of mudéjar architecture from Chiapas due to its massive square base; the specific kind of brick-style ornament, and the wooden octagonal vault with an eight point star which is reminiscent of Islamic architec-ture. It is considered as the “city’s most prominent colonial building” and “one of the most unique and notable landmarks in Mexico.”

There are many unique and beautiful spots to visit in the city. Although we have mentioned three of the biggest ones, we can also find: City Hall, Utrilla Home, the Casa de la Sirena, Casa del Capitán Diego Mazariegos, Casa del Congreso, the Merced Convent, and many others.

In order to truly say we’ve visited the city, we must enjoy the culinary tradi-tions of Chiapas. There are a wide array of restaurants of all price ranges where one can taste the local dishes such as Eu-ropean hams in the Spanish and German tradition, Chiapas Barbeque, Mole, Chiles Rellenos, Bread Soup, Gota Soup, Rice Soup, Bone Marrow Soup, Stuffed Tender-loin, Chanfaina, Stuffed Mutton, Azafran Tongue, Home Cooked Chicken, the famous Manchamantel, Siguamut, Chiapas-style tamales (especially bola, mole and aza-

Un recorrido completo para conocer la ri-queza arquitectónica de San Cristóbal no pue-de dejar fuera el Arco y Templo del Carmen. Erigido en 1680 con el más puro estilo mudéjar en la época colonial, éste perteneció al Con-vento de la Encarnación. Este edificio antigua-mente servía como puerta de entrada a la Ciu-dad Real, y en la actualidad ha sido adoptado como símbolo emblemático de la misma. Esta construcción, única en México, es considerada parte del muestrario mudéjar chiapaneco por su planta cuadrada de macizas proporciones, sus aplicaciones ornamentales en argamasa y la bóveda octogonal de madera con una estre-lla de ocho puntas, que recuerda los alfarjes del arte islámico. Es considerada “el edificio

colonial más llamativo de la ciudad” y “uno de los monumentos más notables y singulares del Nuevo Mundo”.

Desde luego, hay muchos otros lugares bellos e importantes qué visitar en la ciudad, solo hemos mencionado tres de los más im-portantes pero el listado podría crecer para incluir otros edificios como: Palacio Municipal, Casa Utrilla, Casa de La Sirena, Casa del Capi-tán Diego de Mazariegos, Casa del Congreso, Templo y exconvento de La Merced, entre mu-chos otros.

Para conocer a mayor profundidad la cul-tura de esta ciudad es indispensable disfrutar los manjares de la cocina chiapaneca. In regards to local festivities that have become popular amongst tourist we have the “Spring and Peace Fair (Feria de Prima-vera y Paz)” which is a week long affair that immediately follows Holy Week. It includes shows, culinary events, bullfights, cultural activities, sport matches, children’s games, mechanical rides, traditional dances, and a majestic parade for the elected Queen of the proceedings.

One of San Cristobal’s biggest draws is its vibrant cultural scene. Starting from 2002, the Cervantino-Barroco Festival is celebrated each October and it lasts for about a week. It includes several artistic events put on by peo-ple from all over the world.

Na Bolom is a first-rate cultural center. The name is derived from the Tzotzil Mayan language and means, “The House of the Jag-uar.” The House, that was originally built in 1898, was originally used as a Catholic semi-

En cuanto a las festividades propias del lu-gar y que se han convertido en grandes atrac-tivos turísitcos se debe mencionar: La llamada “Fiesta grande” de San Cristóbal de Las Casas es la “Feria de la Primavera y de la Paz”, la cual se celebra durante una semana, la siguiente a la Semana Santa, en la que se llevan a cabo diversas actividades: espectáculos artísticos, muestras gastronómicas, corridas de toros, ac-tividades culturales, deportivas, infantiles, jue-gos mecánicos, y tradicionales bailes, además de un majestuoso desfile de la Reina electa de la Feria.

La vida cultural de San Cristóbal es, sin duda, otro de sus grandes atractivos: desde el año 2002 se celebra anualmente durante el mes de octubre el Festival Cervantino-Barroco que tiene una duración aproximada de 1 sema-na, en la que se lleva a cabo diversos eventos artísticos y culturales provenientes de todas partes del mundo.

Na Bolom es un centro cultural de primer orden. El nombre viene del idioma maya tzotzil y quiere decir “Casa del Jaguar”. En el principio la casa, que fue construida en el 1898, era un seminario católico, más adelante fue la casa del arqueólogo danés Frans Blom (1893-1963) y de su esposa, la antropóloga y fotógrafa Gertrude Duby Blom (1901-1993). La Fototeca cuenta con más de 50,000 imágenes desde principios del siglo XX hasta el presente, mu-chas de las cuales se exhiben en sus bellos co-rredores, donde además cuelgan colecciones de artesanía y la más grande colección de cru-ces forjadas en hierro de Chiapas. Se reciben más de 30 mil visitantes anuales, de los cuales un 10% aproximadamente son estudiantes.

nary. It was later converted into the private residence of Danish archeologist Frans Blom (1893-1963) and his wife, photographer Ger-trude Duby Blom (1901-1993.) The photo archive has more than 50,000 photographs from the beginning of the XX century until today, many of which are exhibited in the es-tate’s long halls that also have local artisan products and a large collection of sculptures fashioned from steel. It has more than 30 thousand visitors a year, 10% of which are students.

The municipality of San Cristobal de las Casas is a strategic jumping off point for nearby spots. A lot of travelers start from there and head to Comitán, Palenque, Amer-indian sites, natural wonders, etc. The city is a 5 hour bus ride to the Palenque ruins and less than an hour away from the Sumidero Canyon. As of the year 2000, it had 82 hotels and 2066 rooms —as per data collected by the Ministry of Tourism. It’s possible to find hotels for every price range. Plus, there are boutique hotels, special grade hotels, motels, cabins, bungalows, hostels, inn’s, bed and breakfast, student inn’s, etc.

In May 2010, the Mexican President be-stowed the city with the distinction of being “the most magical of cities amongst those considered Magic Cities in Mexico.” In September 2011, the city won the award for the second year running due to its colonial image, hospitality, and culture that it offers travellers.

JAMES BOND FUE, como seguramente lo ha sido para la mayoría de los hombres, una aspiración del ser. ¿Por qué lo hacía tan bien? Nunca lo supe. Simple-mente era Bond.

Pensé que el mundo de los autos era una dimensión inalcansable para mí, primero por-que no vivo en el midi, y segundo porque no tengo ninguno de esos autos. Dejé que la vida pasara. Tiempo después los autos volvieron a llamar mi atención, y sin Bond. Creí entender por qué hay tanta gente apasionada de esas máquinas animales llenas de sutileza que concentran en muchos sentidos la historia de la humanidad. Tuve ganas de adentrarme un poco, miré algunas transmisiones de Fórmula 1, y dejé que la vida pasara.

Voy por partes: aunque uno nunca pueda ser futbolista, puede mirar el futbol y estar en un equipo con sus amigos, o salir a jugar a la calle en la tarde después de ver un partido por la mañana. Esto se puede y es un placer; no obstante, con los autos no se puede. Uno no puede ver Fórmula 1 y después salir a correr un auto en la colonia. No se puede simular, y por eso dejé pasar el tiempo.

Pensé que se necesitaba ser millonario, te-ner una pista para ensayar, una escudería que se encargara de mí y tiempo para viajar por el mundo e ir al Grand Prix de Malasia, razón por la que nunca tuve un interés genuino en el ámbito motorizado; quiero decir: nunca tuve un interés que me hiciera querer dedicarme a ello, ya que me parecía un deporte de clase social alta.

Mi falta de interés se debía principalmente a que nunca tendría la oportunidad de meter-me a ese universo. Sin embargo, y como suele suceder: siempre hay una primera vez. Y esta primera vez fue en Exotic Rides, Cancún, don-de pude transportarme bajo un sol caribeño (a veces más atractivo que el mediterráneo). Con Exotic Rides puedes manejar un Lamborghini, un Lotus o un Ferrari; claro, antes de ello, la gente de Exotic ofrece una clase teórica de manejo y seguridad, ya que no es cualquier cosa manejar estos hermosos autos. Así, en un Lamborghini pude ir de Cancún hacia Tulum en una carretera de 220 kilómetros y sentir que lograba cumplir más de un sueño.

Sin duda alguna es una oportunidad que no pueden desaprovechar quienes alguna vez han tenido el deseo de sentir la tecnología a este nivel. Estoy seguro que incluso quienes estén alejados del mundo automotriz lo dis-frutarán. Yo lo hice, y ahora entiendo por qué ese programa británico, Top Gear, tiene tan-to éxito: el mundo de los autos está lleno de sutilezas. Particularmente, el Lamborghini me parece la mejor opción: es elegante, es astuto y es sensible.

Se trata de una marca que marcó la pauta en el mundo del diseño industrial, desde el Es-pada de los años setenta, el Jarama o el Urra-co, modelos que no sólo llevaron de un lado a otro actores del cine italiano, sino también de la nouvelle vague francesa y muchas corrientes más. Estos autos se volvieron tan atractivos como los propios actores que transportaban, y a veces incluso más. Por eso, subirse a ellos no sólo es sentarse frente a un volante, sino sentirse dentro de una marca que estuvo pre-sente en la historia y que, por supuesto, sigue estando muy viva.

Subirse a uno de estos autos es, pues, adentrarse en la tecnología, el diseño, la ve-locidad y la historia. Manejarlos es soñar. No cabe duda que hoy día ir a Cancún se ha vuelto una oportunidad para, desde ahí, poder viajar a muchos otros lugares, y para trasladarse a través del tiempo. Y esto no deja de ser un pri-vilegio muy especial.

James Bond was an aspirational fan-tasy for most men. How did he always know exactly what to do and say? Who knows, he was Bond.

I always saw the world of competitive car racing as something unattainable. First of all, I don’t live in southern France, secondly, my car doesn’t even begin to resemble a profes-sional racing one. As such, I let life pass me by. Some time later, competitive racing caught my eye again —this time without Mr. Bond. I thought I understood why so many people felt passion for it, the massive yet subtle engines that encapsulate so much of human history. I felt like learning more so I saw a few Formula 1 races but again, let life pass me by.

Even though one may never be a profes-sional footballer, one can watch football on TV with your group of friends. One can play foot-ball with the neighborhood kids when the af-ternoon rolls around. This is a possibility and one of life’s pleasures. With cars, one has no such option. One can’t watch a Formula 1 race on TV and then attempt to mimic their idol in a quick race around the block. You can’t pre-tend, and that’s why I let life pass me by.

I thought I had to be a millionaire. I thought I had to have my own racetrack to practice on, a brand to sponsor me, and the time to travel to the Malaysian Grand Prix. It was because of this that my hobby for the sport was never too great. I always saw it as an ac-tivity reserved only for the super rich.

My lack of interest hinged on the fact that I would never be able to belong to that particu-lar universe. But then, as sometimes happen, I experienced my first time. This happened

To climb into these cars is to enter a world of technology, design, speed, and history. To drive them is to allow oneself to dream. To visit Cancun is a great chance to, amongst other things, travel in time —and if this isn’t a privilege, I don’t know what is.

EXTRAVAGANTE Y divertido, si hubiera que descri-birlo con una frase, esta sería “más es más”. Su estilo se caracteriza por el predominio de las formas y texturas, de elementos llamativos y del color.

Oriundo del Distrito Federal, a sus veinte años alcanzó gran éxito al presentar la síntesis “Mexican kitsch” en Fashion Week, siendo invitado a permanecer como diseñador del evento.

Ha realizado desfiles en San Diego, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Ale-mania, Brasil, además de colaborar con marcas reconocidas internacio-nalmente.

Hoy prefiere los desfiles locales producidos por él mismo, para pre-sentar su ropa “de forma diferente, con grados de dificultad más diverti-dos”; lo que él llama“acción artística no convencional”. Lo suyo es moda de la calle; 100% kitsch y urbana, y más recientemente, reciclada.

Realcalanizar –explicado por él mismo– es “acción-efecto de vestir de Sergio Alcalá. El ‘re’ es porque se trata de reutilizar y el objetivo es introducir una nueva tendencia en el mundo de la moda”. Trozos de prendas desechadas dieron origen al primer desfile clandestino “Realca-lanización”. El lugar: el Mercado de San Juan.

El escenario sirvió para presentar de ma-nera espontánea la nueva colección del dise-ñador mexicano con ayuda de una convocato-ria abierta en FB, en la que se invitó a chicas no profesionales a lucir los vestidos, porque él asegura que la moda debe ser para todos y no solo para las modelos rusas de 1.90 m que aparecen en los desfiles tradicionales.

Todas las piezas de Sergio Alcalá son úni-cas; no hay dos iguales, porque no le impor-ta si se vende o no, todo lo hace como arte, pero… ¡claro que se vende!

If you had to describe him in one line, it’d be “more is more.” If you had to use two words, extravagant and fun. His style is marked by shapes and textures, flashy materials and vivid colors.

Hailing from Mexico City, he pre-sented his “Mexican Kitsch” collection at Fashion Week when he was just twenty years old —and was invited to be a resi-dent designer thereafter.

He’s presented his own collections in San Diego, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Ger-many, Brazil and has collaborated with many top international brands as well.

He now prefers local shows that he produces himself. He feels it’s the best way to present his collections, “in a more original way, with fun levels of difficulty” in what he calls “non-conventional ar-tistic manner.” He specializes in urban fashion, kitsch and, more recently, recy-cled.

To realcanize —as explained by the man himself— is the act of dressing in Sergio Alcalá clothes. The “re” stems from having to re-use and the objective is to introduce this new tendency to the world of fashion. Bits of discarded clothes were the genesis behind the first “Real-canized” runway show which was held at no other than the historic San Juan Mar-ket in Mexico City.

The venue played host to an im-promptu presentation of the Mexican designers new collection —the RSVP was an open call through Facebook. Non-professional models were asked to wear the dresses seeing as Alcalá states that fashion is for everyone and not only 6’ 2” Russian models.

All of Sergio Alcalá’s pieces are unique; there are no two alike. He’s not interested in what sells but in the art form behind it. That said, his pieces sell just fine!

Mexico has many designers that are worthy of mention and Iker Ortiz is one of them. Ortiz is the founder of one of the most interesting and innovative jew-elry design firms, IK. IK currently boasts the most impressive designs in contem-porary jewelry —as it should, seeing as Ortiz is a fourth generation jewler.

“Minimalist” is a proper adjective to describe Ortiz’s work. He feels that, “Mexican jewelers should pioneer a new era, seeking new materials and new shapes that go beyond what is expected of traditional jewelry.”

Titanium, stainless steel, and corian, are but some of the materials that are combined with precious stones. Without discarding, of course, gold, silver, and platinum to create simple yet elegant de-signs.

Iker Ortiz has put out five collections under the IK banner. His last one, “SI-ETE”, is a collection based on geometric designs layered with stainless steel, se-cured by silver pins, or combinations with diamonds.

‘Minimalista’ es el adjetivo que mejor describe su trabajo. Opina que “los joyeros mexicanos deben iniciar una nueva etapa, buscando materiales diferentes y nuevas for-mas en lugar de quedarse en el estereotipo de la joyería tradicional”.

Diseña en titanio, acero inoxidable y co-rian con piedras preciosas. Siempre con la posibilidad de usar plata, oro y platino, en formas que denotan un fuerte sentido de es-tilo y simplicidad.

Iker ha diseñado cinco colecciones bajo el sello IK. La última, ‘SIETE’; es una colección ba-sada en juegos de geometría a base de layers en acero inoxidable y algunos de ellos sujeta-dos con pernos de plata o en combinación con diamantes.
