INTRODUCTION

The University of South Australia is pleased to announce the ongoing development of the Leadership Program in 2016.

Ongoing evaluation and research into best practice models across the sector has driven the following adaptions to the 2015

version of the program:

The ASPIRE Program will be absorbed by a new student recognition award program which will be launched in 2016.

The UNITE Program will continue with very similar content, but with sessions being moved from mostly weeknights to

full week-days and some week-ends.

The UNITE Live-In Camp will change focus from being workshop and training focused to an enterprise focused

planning and team-building event.

UNITE participants will have the option to bring their own Enterprise activity ideas and form groups to work on their

proposal. Depending on the proposal, groups may choose to align with Venture Catalyst, Community Connect,

ENACTUS or TEDx UniSA programs.

The LEAD Program will continue with a sharper focus on participants taking an active leadership role within the

programs listed above. LEAD participants will receive additional training and support in mentoring, coaching, project

management and facilitation.

Any student who feels they have sufficient Leadership experience, whether it be through participation in the UniSA

Leadership Program or another leadership or entrepreneurial focussed program, is strongly encouraged to apply for

the LEAD Program.

LEAD OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the LEAD Program, students should be able to display these behaviours.

• Understanding strengths and weakness, overused strengths that derail success and personal goals and drivers

MENTORING & COACHING

• Guiding others through reflection and learning from their experiences

FACILIATION SKILLS

• Guiding groups through learning activities and facilitating learning and reflection

CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

• Understand conflict styles and strategies for managing conflict effectively

EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP

• Ability to provide frontline leadership through participation on an executive board or committee.

LEAD PROGRAM

LEAD will experience some changes in 2016 and to be eligible participants will need to have completed an approved

Leadership-focused activity. Participants in the LEAD program will receive additional training in self-awareness, mentoring,

facilitation and executive leadership and provide guidance and direction for student participating in the UNITE program.

Objectives

At the conclusion of LEAD, students will have developed these additional skills and graduate attributes:

Applications

Applications close at 9:00am on Monday 2nd

November 2015.

Participants

Up to 15 students will be offered a position in the 2016 program. All

participants will be required to attend the Introductory Session in early

December 2015.

Requirements

The complete the program and receive the LEAD Award, participants must:

Attend all core sessions listed

Actively participate in the Advisory Board for one of the listed

programs

Attend a minimum of 6 Innovation MasterClass session

Assist with Group Coaching following the INSPIRE Seminars

Facilitate online discussion and reflection with UNITE participants

Ensure sustainability of the Enterprise activity for the following year

Value

This program is offered to UniSA students at no cost, but it is important for

participants to note that the accepted value of this program in the open market would be well in excess of $5000 per student.

It is expected that student recognise the opportunity that is being offered and fully commit to participation in all activities and

overall completion of the program. Withdrawal from the program at any point after the Live-In Camp (except in extremely

extenuating circumstances) will be viewed as an extremely disappointing outcome and students may be held financially

responsible for their participation to the point of withdrawal.

Hogan Profiling Tool – Bright & Dark Side of Personality and Values

The Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) describes normal, or bright-side personality – qualities that describe how we relate to others when we are at our best. The Hogan Development Survey (HDS) describes the dark side of personality – qualities that emerge in times of increased strain and can disrupt relationships, damage reputations, and derail peoples’ chances of success. The Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory (MVPI) describes personality from the inside – the

core goals, values, drivers, and interests that determine what we desire and strive to attain.

Facilitate Learning

1/02/2016 Learn strategies for effective group facilitation. Discover how to set the learning environment, develop an understanding of learning styles and build the skills to guide conversation and then apply learning with your audience. This session will provide a valuable education in helping others to learn through guidance and

support.

Mentoring and Coaching

15/02/2016 Building on the Facilitation workshop, discover strategies for effective mentoring and coaching of others. Prepare a mentoring plan and discover the keys to

effective communication as a mentor and coach.

Conflict Management and Negotiation

26/02/2016 Increase self-awareness in relation to your approach to managing difficult people and situations. Understand different conflict styles, your preferred style and

the impact it can have on relationships. Complete a self-analysis using the Thomas Kilmann Conflict Tool.

Skills for Executive Committee Leaders

19/03/2016 Learn about the role of an executive committee and the process and protocols of committee meetings and functions. Effective committees need engaged and committed members to function effectively and participants will need to consider their role on their chosen committee and develop a plan for how they will

make a valuable contribution to its success.

Pitch your Idea

11/04/2016 Attend the Pitch Presentations from the UNITE participants. Identify which Enterprise activities align best with your personal interests and skills.

Build your Team

12/04/2016 Present a brief personal introduction to the UNITE participants, following a selection process, mentors will be allocated to Enterprise teams. This will be a day of team-building and planning, mentors and coaches will be invited to provide support and advice throughout the session. Enterprise teams may work through the

evening. Dinner will be held from 7pm – 9pm.

The Next Step

13/04/2016 Mentors will be invited to work with the team and start planning their projects. Enterprise teams will map out their project implementation and agree on

upcoming meeting times and actions.

and guidance to their Enterprise team.

30/04/2016 Develop strategies and use tools designed to help your group map out your Enterprise activity. Spend time with your project group developing your project

management plan. This will be the last chance for participants to change groups.

12/10/2016 Present an annual report outlining the aims, strategies and outcomes of your Enterprise activity over the year. This can be presented as a poster

presentation with a brief (5 min) explanation and Q&A.

30/11/2016 Meet program alumni and network with invited guest speakers as an ongoing opportunity to develop your leadership and enterprise skills and career

opportunities.

Enterprise teams come together to work on their project with support from mentors and coaches. Guest hosts will be invited to share ideas, strategies and provide expert advice. LEAD students will be expected to attend at least 6 of these sessions.

INSPIRE Seminars

Starting Wed 23/03/2016 Guest speakers will be invited to share ideas and strategies related to leadership and personal excellence. Group coaching with facilitators will take place following the seminar to further debrief the key topics and themes raised in the seminar. LEAD students will assist with the facilitation of the

group coaching sessions.

Online Reflection and Discussion

Starting 29/01/2016 Following each workshop, participants will be required to engage in online discussion and reflection exercises to aid their understanding and

learning. LEAD students will facilitate online discussion and reflection and ensure engagement of the UNITE participants.

ENTERPRISE ACTIVITY

During the Live-In Camp session, UNITE participants will have the opportunity to present an idea for an Enterprise activity to

the rest of the group. Students will need to provide a brief of their idea before the camp and will be allocated 5 minutes to

present their pitch.

When all participants have presented their idea for an Enterprise activity, trainers will facilitate a networking session where

students have the opportunity to speak with others and negotiate to form Enterprise teams. Some participants will get to work

on their Enterprise idea; others may merge their idea with someone else’s, while the rest may need to abandon their idea

completely. There will be ongoing opportunities throughout the remainder of the Live-In Camp for Enterprise teams to shape

and plan their Enterprise activity. Participants may choose to change teams but must finalise their team by the Project

Management session.

•Idea for a startup, which Venture Catalyst defines as a product, service, or process that is both innovative and scalable.

•The business proposed must benefit South Australia’s economic development.

•Create community development projects that put people’s own ingenuity and talents at the center of improving their livelihoods.

•Project that is external to UniSA with a community partner

Community Connect

•Identify the issues that you feel passionate about and help to turn your ideas into professional, engaging and impactful projects and events.

•Project which is held at UniSA in cooperation with community partners

TEDx UniSA

•TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading." It supports independent organizers who want to create a TED-like event in their own community.

•Plan and deliver a TEDx UniSA event

LEAD participants will have the opportunity to observe Enterprise team activity pitches at the end of the first day of the Live-in

Camp. The following morning LEAD students will introduce themselves to Enterprise teams, outlining the skills and attributes

they possess that may benefit certain Enterprise teams. Following this, a short selection process will take place which will

result in mentors being allocated to Enterprise teams. LEAD mentors will work with their Enterprise teams on Day 2 and 3 of

the Live-In Camp and also assist with group coaching following INSPIRE Seminars and during Innovation MasterClass sessions.

LEAD mentors will also stimulate conversation and reflection amongst UNITE participants through the chosen online portal.

Enterprise ideas may not necessarily fit in with the listed programs and other activities may still be considered, but final

approval for Enterprise activities will need to be sought from the UniSA Leadership and Volunteering team. Enterprise teams

may also need to recruit additional students to their activity and while these volunteers will not be an official part of the UNITE

program, they will receive recognition for their participation through other UniSA programs.

SELECTION GUIDELINES

To qualify to apply for the LEAD Program, you will either:

have demonstrated strong leadership potential through participation in the UniSA Leadership Program or another

leadership or entrepreneurial focussed program

believe that you have this potential to be a leader and show a willingness to take responsibility

Consistently Positive

You will also have demonstrated a consistently positive approach to the University and your learning, this means:

Reliability – Good attendance and punctuality

Good conduct – Consistently positive and co-operative

Respect – Positively acknowledging students, staff members and

external clients

Organisation –Arrive on time for each workshop well prepared and

expectations met during the time frame

Ambition/Aspiration – Able to demonstrate a desire to be involved

in extra-curricular activities and University events

In addition to the above, you will be committed to:

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

PERFECT PITCH WORKSHOPS

Perfect Pitch is a series of workshops offered throughout the year on a range of topics that will assist students to develop their

professional skills. Any student can apply for as many or few workshops as they desire, however please note that places are

usually limited.

Students can keep up to date with upcoming workshops by joining the Perfect Pitch group on the USASA Clubs page

(http://usasa.sa.edu.au/Clubs/Club.aspx?CID=1589). Workshops will be posted through this page and students can register and

pay for those where a small fee is charged.

COMPLETION CEREMONY

The final part of the program will involve participants, staff, mentors and family/friends being invited to a Presentation Night,

where participants will be publically acknowledged for their achievements.

It is anticipated that this event form a part of a larger event celebrating achievements of a wide range of students across the

University for various student experience and extra-curricular achievements.

Applications for UNITE and LEAD will close on Monday 2nd

November 2015 and applicants will be contacted shortly afterwards

with the outcome of their application. Interviews will be conducted during November and December 2015.

The application forms will remain accessible throughout 2016 and students may apply for the 2017 intake at any time after the

2016 closing date.

ONGOING PARTICIPATION

Students who complete the requirements of the LEAD program will be invited to maintain their involvement with the

Leadership Program through ongoing mentoring or membership of the various Business Advisory Boards. These roles will be

voluntary, but will provide excellent ongoing professional development outcomes for participants.
