Page 1: Unit 1 – distinction criteria

Unit 1 – Distinction Criteria Did the film successfully change the representation of women in horrors? In my opinion I would say the film has changed the way horror movies show women. This is because in most horror movies the girls are either the not so bright characters/dumb blonde and always get killed first or they are the promiscuous type girls. Sometimes the girl survives to the end if she is the survivalist type but not many movies does this happen. The descent is different in this situation because most girls are strong and brave but there are still stereotype characters such as Juno as the promiscuous girl. Consider the purpose of the film did the film achieve its intended purpose? The film did well and this is why they had a sequel. Only movies that made a big profit get a sequel. However the sequel to The Descent didn’t do very well. The first movie did well, spending 3 million on the movie and making 56 million back. So I think the movie reached its purpose. Its purpose was also to entertain its audience with blood and gore which was achieved. Did the film change the horror genre? The film changed the horror genre in some ways because its one of not many horrors of an all female cast. Also it’s a horror when you don’t see the creatures till the last 20 minutes and this doesn’t happen that much. Most movies have a male cast or a mixed gender cast and this is why it has changed the genre a little. How successful was the movie at keeping the audiences attention? The film does keep the audience entertained because it keeps it intense and interesting. Because we don’t see the monsters until the end and this keeps everyone waiting and wondering what they are and what they look like and why they are there. So I would say this is successful because it keeps the audience entertained and it’s easy to understand what’s going on. Overall I think the movie is successful.
