Unit 3:Environmental Requirements

and Growth Factors

Group Work

Page 2: Unit 3: Environmental Requirements and Growth Factors Group Work

Choose groups

• Students are to get into groups of three

• Each group must have three different learners

• After getting in groups, let Mr. White know who is in your group

Page 3: Unit 3: Environmental Requirements and Growth Factors Group Work

Project

• We are going to investigate the effects of different environmental requirements on plants. The absence or overabundance of different elements affect plants and how they grow.

Page 4: Unit 3: Environmental Requirements and Growth Factors Group Work

Process

• We are going to use the scientific method: – Ask a question– Do background research– Construct a hypothesis– Test hypothesis by doing an experiment– Analyze data and draw a conclusion– Communicate results to class

Page 5: Unit 3: Environmental Requirements and Growth Factors Group Work

Procedure

• Decide which environmental factors you are going to investigate

• Choose five different factors – 3 nutrient, and two environmental– Different nutrients, temperature, light, water, soil, etc

• Predict what the results will be• Design your experiment• Develop data collecting documents• Make a list of materials needed• Meet with Mr. White to discuss project

Page 6: Unit 3: Environmental Requirements and Growth Factors Group Work

Procedure Cont’d.

• Assign different tasks to each student in the group. Work as a group, but not in a group. Each member of the team should be working on their own facet of the project

• Example: – Background research– Design Experiment– Develop a hypothesis– Collect materials needed

• Each student will be required to write an explanation of what they did in the group, and how it lead to the success of the group.

Additional Information

• It is expected that the experiment will be monitored daily, with notes taken daily.

• If problems occur during the experiment, see Mr. White for ideas.

• Evaluate the data as the experiment is running, looking for trends or problems.

• This project may take many weeks or months. • Be prepared to present your project with an

explanation of your experiment, hypothesis and conclusion.
