Dimensions of Parental Behavior

• Warmth – At one end of the spectrum, parents are openly affectionate, and involved with their kids. On the other end of the spectrum, parents are uninvolved and sometimes hostile. These parents seem focused on their own needs and interests .

Dimensions of Parental Behavior

• Control – At one end of the spectrum are dictatorial parents, who try to control every step of their child’s life, like a puppeteer. On the other end of the spectrum are parents who do not try to control their children and put little effort into it.

Parenting Styles

Authoritarian parenting – combines high control with little warmth.

• Lay down the rules and expect adherence to rules, no discussion

• Cultivate hard work, respect and obedience.

• Parents do not consider child’s needs or wishes

Parenting Styles Authoritative parenting

combines a fair degree of parental control with being warm and responsive to children

• Explain rules and encourage discussion

Parenting Styles Permissive parenting offers

warmth and caring but little parental control

• Accept their child’s behavior and punish them infrequently

neither warmth nor control • Provide for their child’s basic

physical and emotional needs• Minimize the amount of time spent

with child to avoid becoming emotionally involved
