The hydrosphere

The hydrosphere is a layer formed of all the water on Earth, except the water vapour in the atmosphere. This layer covers three quarters of the surface area of the planet.

Page 3: Unit 9

The waters of the hydrosphere

The hydrosphere includes:∞ Oceanic waters: the waters that form the

oceans and seas.∞ Continental waters: the waters that cover part

of the continents (rivers, lakes, masses of ice) and underground water.

Page 4: Unit 9

The hydrosphere is always moving The waters in rivers flows until it reaches the seas and oceans. The water in seas and oceans moves because of three phenomena: Waves are undulations of the water on the surface, caused by the

wind. Currents are masses of water that move from one place to another,

like a river within the sea or ocean. Tides are movements up and down of the leven of the water, every

six hours.

The importance of the hydrosphere

The hydrosphere provides the water that all living things need to survive.

We use the water of the hydrosphere to drink, clean, cook and in industry and farming.

In the hydrosphere we realice activities like swimming and fishing.

The hysdrosphere provides the water that all living things need to survive. It is also an habitat and we use the water for many things.

The atmosphere

The atmosphere is the layer of air that surrounds the geosphere and the hydrosphere .It extends about 1000 kilometres above the Earth’s surface.

Page 7: Unit 9

The layers of the atmosphere

The atmosphere has different layers: Troposphere. The first 12 kilometres above

the surface of the Earth. Stratosphere.Between 10 and 50 kilometres

above the surface of the Earth. Higher layers.Above the stratosphere are

other very cold layers with few gasses. They are: The mesosphere, the thermosphere and the exosphere.

Page 8: Unit 9

Changes in the atmosphere

The atmosphere changes continually : wind, precipitation, clouds …

All the changes in the atmosphere are called atmospheric phenomena.

Page 9: Unit 9

The importance of the atmosphere

The atmosphere is very important for life on Earth:

It filters dangerous solar radiation, particularly the ozone layer.

It maintains the heat of the planet. It contains gasses necessary for

photosynthesis and breathing.
