Beyond Words Chapter 1 (8-29)

Journal entries

Minimum 300 words

No plagiarism, please!

Post directly to the site, not as a document

No pages documents, please Discussion

Are multi-media texts new?

How have advances in technology affected the way we interact with information? (compare your [grand]parents writing a research paper and your own experience in writing research papers).

What does sensory overload mean? Can you ever have too much information?

What are some techniques we can use to make sense of the information around us (apply to research writing).

Discuss reading from Beyond Words. How do these passages help us respond to and analyze texts appropriately?

Interviews In what research contexts might interviews be

useful?

What are some good opening questions to ask?

What types of questions tend to work best in an interview?

Activity Interview exercise

Select four volunteers from the class to be interviewers and four volunteers to be interviewees. Each of the interviewees will receive a card with a personality trait on it they will exhibit during the mock interviews. The four students conducting the interviews will need to prepare a set of four questions dealing with the non-profit they are profiling.

Journal #2 For this journal assignment, read the plagiarism exercise posted on Blackboard under Course Library. Then, consider the following questions in your journal entry:

1. What is plagiarism? 2. Why is it wrong? 3. In your opinion, what are some of the “gray

areas” of plagiarism?

Page 3: UNIT I: COMMUNITY SERVICE REPORTwr.english.fsu.edu/sites/g/files/imported/storage/original/application/... · 3rd draft Community Service Report & Process Memo (2 print copies for

4. What strategies will you use to avoid plagiarism in this and other contexts?

Journal #3 Free journal—choose a topic that interests you, and discuss some possibilities for research and exploration with that topic. You do not need to conduct research for this journal entry (although you may). You do need to write thoughtfully on your topic and include possible questions that might be pursued in researching this topic at greater length. As always, this journal entry should be a minimum of 300 words.

WORKSHOP—show guidelines Journal #4 One of the most important steps in research writing is deciding on a topic. Choose four of the following six headings (Controversies, People, Places, Trends, Technologies, History) to go at the top of each four columns. Brainstorm a list of words or phrases that come to mind when you think about what you know and what you might want to know about each category. Just write whatever comes to mind. Review your lists. Look for a single item in any column that seems promising. Ask yourself these questions: Is this something that raises questions that research can help answer? Are they potentially interesting questions? Does this item get at something you’ve always wondered about? Might it open doors to knowledge you think is important, fascinating, or relevant to our own life? Circle the items. For the items you circled, generate a list of questions—as many as you can—that you’d like to explore about the subject.

Journal #6 Essay Proposal. Essay Proposal: 1-2 page, double-spaced research proposal describing the topic you have chosen to write about for this assignment. This proposal should contain the following items: "1. Focusing question; 2) Primary purpose (explore, argue, analyze); 3) What, if any, prior beliefs, assumptions, preconceptions, ideas, or prejudices do you bring to this project? What personal experiences may have shaped the way you feel?" (Ballenger 53-55). I will mark your proposal with a check if I believe the topic will work for the assignment. The New McGraw-Hill Handbook, Chapter 15

The Curious Researcher Presentation (Group 2) Discussion

Finding a focus—show students both Fair Trade articles. Start with article #2. Discuss the merits of the article, and also the faults. What would students suggest to improve it?

Move on to article #1 and repeat the exercise. What makes the two articles work or not work? Which is better? Why?

Journal #7 At this point of the writing process, you should be sorting through sources for your essay and applying the guidelines laid out in The Curious Researcher for distinguishing useful and reliable sources from others. For this journal entry, I want you to begin to think through the sources you have found. A good way to do this is to write about them. 1) Choose three of the sources you’ve located for possible use in your research essay and write a paragraph summary of each one (title, author(s), main argument/focus, supporting evidence). 2) Write a response to each of the three sources you summarized: What did you learn from these sources that you didn't know before? Do you believe these sources to be reliable? Why? How do you plan to use them in your essay? As always, your entry should contain a minimum of 300 words. This entry will be posted online; you will not bring a print copy to class.

Beyond Words, “The Comfy Chair Revolution” (205-211).

Free write A common struggle for new researchers is knowing how much you should be in the paper, and how much your sources should be in the paper? What do you think? How much should a writer’s voice appear in a researched essay and how much should the sources be heard?

Discussion Discuss the importance of not letting one’s

sources run away with the show . . . these essays are not patchwork quilts of others’ words. Instead, they are thoughtful approaches to specific problems that are back up by thorough research.

Compare summary and analysis. How are they different? How does this apply to the research essay?

Research writing does not need to be sterile and boring. Using colorful language and astute observation can help research writing come alive.

The Curious Researcher Presentation (Group 5) Journal #9 At this point in the writing process, you have conducted research and completed an early draft of your essay. For this journal assignment, I want you to choose one of the following note-taking techniques introduced by Ballenger in The Curious Researcher to engage in depth with one of your chosen sources. Your entry may include extensive quotations from your source (as you will see in the examples in The Curious Researcher) but you will need to write a minimum of 300 of your own words. NOTE: Formatting for this assignment may be tricky, so you can compose your entry in Microsoft Word and upload it here as an RTF (rich-text file). If you need help in figuring out how to do this, please speak with me or a tutor before the entry is due, Friday morning at 10:10 AM.

Chapter 23, The New McGraw-Hill Handbook

Finish MLA activity Journal #10 You have now made it to the second draft of your field essay. At this point you have looked at several sources, analyzing them, comparing them to each other, and coming up with your own ideas about your topic. At this point in the process you should have chosen your

Page 9: UNIT I: COMMUNITY SERVICE REPORTwr.english.fsu.edu/sites/g/files/imported/storage/original/application/... · 3rd draft Community Service Report & Process Memo (2 print copies for

sources for your paper. Remember that you need a minimum of five sources (you may certainly use more, if you find it necessary to so), only two of which may be "Internet" resources (websites). In this journal entry, I want you to do the following:

1. Upload a Word document with your Works Cited page listing all of your sources, formatted correctly according to the guidelines laid out in The McGraw-Hill Handbook.

2. Under each source, write 1) a brief summary of that source (2-4 sentences), and 2) a brief response to that source (2-4 sentences). In your response, you might mention how you initially reacted to the source. What surprised you about it? What did you learn from it that you didn't know before? You might also mention what role this source plays in your essay. Have you used it for its statistical value? Does it help add "faces" to your essay? Does it support your main claim or argument? Does it illuminate your topic in some meaningful way?

In some ways, this journal will be similar to your last journal in that it will require you to summarize and respond to your sources in your own words. As always, be careful to avoid plagiarism in all forms. If you quote from your source in your summary, then you must use quotation marks. If you are summarizing your source, however, and the source is listed immediately above (in your Works Cited entry), you will not need to use parenthetical documentation. It will be obvious that you are summarizing the source in the entry.
