Situation and BriefIntroduction to my client
My client is Karen Jewell a Financial Director of an independent financial support and design house for small to medium size businesses.
Karen founded the company Courts Design in 1990 and over the pas years she along with the in-house designers have a number of clients and a vast portfolio of work they have done.
Working along side of Karen are her two second directors, Jon Eton and Tracey Larkin. Jon and Tracey have also been working for Courts for 15 years and have watched it grow.
Introduction and information on Courts Design:
The company is split into two different locations “The Office” is in Hartley Whitney were financial, administration and marketing work is carried out. It is spread over 2 floors and has 30 people working within it. “The Studio” is located not far from The Office on a three story muse house that’s been modernized to give off a crisp look with soft lighting and whitewashed walls.
Courts produces and provides a service for crisp designs using special techniques such as modernization and minimalism..
Although Courts Design is based in the UK, its work does internationally within Europe including Berlin, Madrid, Barcelona, Budapest and regularly to USA and UAE.

Situation
Karen has explained that she’d like a product to display what the company produce. So that when new potential clients visit the headquarters they can see what Courts Design is all about.
However at the moment its incredibly difficult to think of ideas as I haven’t seen the space in which she wants to be utilized.
BriefI’m planning on researching with Karen into existing products and narrowing down the type of product she wants. I’m then going to approach her with some initial ideas, get feedback and continue on designing until a product that suits her needs has been created.

1st Meeting with Karen Jewell – Managing Director of Courts DesignFriday 2nd October 2009
This first meeting with Karen was simple meet and greet – and allowing me to see the space in which I was able to work with.
Karen explained what she wanted to achieve from the project and that was simply something with a “wow” factor that potential clients would be impressed with.
We also discussed the idea of having the product so that It can be transported to shows and events to advertise the company.

Contact with my ClientDear Ms Karen Jewell, Thank-you for agreeing to be my client. After our conversation I put together a brief for the project. This is to design and manufacture a set of three wall mounted A3 acrylic lighting boxes; to be placed in your office.
In order for me to work on the Design Specification we need to meet to discuss our thoughts.
I’ve found some existing products on the internet that I feel can be adapted and used for ideas that I’d like to show you.

On the right is a A3 Scan in of some pictures I took of Courts Designs office in Hartley Wintney. I’ve made some small annotations and discussed the current artwork and modern paintings and display systems within the office.
For example the very modern canvas painting is a very effective piece of art that stands in the reception waiting area above the sofa, it states “Creates Communicate”. One of the companies new logos and slogans.
After this email, I constructed some Initial discussion boards to take back to Karen and get her opinions on some existing and similar products. Hopefully after this next meeting I will walk away with a clearer Idea of what I need to create as Design Sketches.
Initial Discussion Board
This photo here shows the Studios upstairs meeting room. Used for slideshows and design concept meetings. A display system in this room wouldn’t be seen as much as what it would in other parts of the office.
This photo here shows one of the designers desks in “The Studio” each designer uses 3 computer displays on their desks for a maximum overview of the computer systems.
This shows free wall space on the back wall behind the desk were a display system would be seen by clients and employees on a day-to-day basis.
This photo here shows the back studio room, where 4 designers have joint desks to share their design concepts. A display system im here similar to in the upstairs design meeting room would not be seen daily. Therefore this room isn’t exactly perfect for its use.
Because Karen is constantly working and on the phone we decided the best method of communication is via email. Its quick and reliable plus attachments and files can be added.

Its important for me to be able to visualize the space I’m going to utilise. These photos were taken on my first visit to courts design and show the modernism and minimalism of the newly designed headquarters.
Starting from left to right: Photo 1: Shows the first thing people (potential clients) see as they walk through the main entrance. Photo 2: Shows the receptionists newly designed desk curved to make the most of the room. And finally Photo 3: Shows the space in which Karen wants utilised.
One thing that Karen expressed was that it needed to look in place. Meaning that it cannot clash with what's already within the room.

All these points on the left are going to be very important when it comes down to the actual design stage of the product.
Analysis of 1st meeting with Karen
After my first meeting with Karen it was very clear on what she wanted.

Something very important that we discussed is that its incredibly important for information and details about the company to be updated regularly. For example website news feeds and company reviews and weekly news are sent out.
Therefore, its so important that the product can be updated with new portfolio images.
After this first meeting, I made some research into existing products, research into materials and fixtures and fittings then made some designs….
The mood lighting very much determines the way in which visitors feel as they enter the building.
Its very important the product has an effective balance between this.

Research into Pop-Up DisplaysThis section show research into pop-up display systems. Here are a few current products that are on the market.
How pop up display systems work
Pop-Up Display: A device used for temporary graphical presentations. Pop-up displays are very portable with the graphic rolled up in the base or stand. Product Analysis of a Pop-Up Display system for a College
Shiplake college hold many events in which display systems and literature holders are needed and used. Events such as Speech Days, Open Days and Parents Conferences.
The college have several display systems that they use and I contacted Mrs. Jarrett the Registrar of the college to get hold of one and analysis it.

At this meeting I took along these Initial Discussion boards to get Karen’s general feed-back and opinions on these existing products. The annotations on this scan in were made by Karen giving me her detailed opinion.
Evaluation of MeetingI made an evaluation/analysis of this meeting in that…
Karen liked most of the products on the page, although the Illuminated Wall Sign saying “Open” looks very un professional and night clubbing like. Most of the other products she liked.
Karen came up with a good idea of collaborating two products together taking two features to make one product.
This idea was too take the Acrylic Picture frame and the hanging display system and incorporate them together.
Now I no how Karen thinks and things she likes and doesn’t I can go ahead and create some initial design ideas/sketches and present them for more feedback.

Although she likes the idea of engraved acrylic. (Light weight, easily manpowered from site to office)
Here Karen analyses back light display system such as this one. She discussed that she didn’t like the full back lit idea, however spotlights looking down on the system was ample amount of lighting.
Here is a blank wall space where we annotated putting design ideas on it. This design shows a hanging display system. Hanging on mesh wiring with a clear engraved acrylic front to it. Karen liked this idea however this isn’t portable between Office and Exhibitions.

This product is available to buy from Discount Displays.co.uk. This product also includes a literature holder, although is more for the smaller exhibition stands it could still look effect within the office workplace. It also Flat Pack and can be taken on the road easily.

Trying to organise a meeting/viewing after or Friday on Exeat.
Category Specification Explanation
Function Its main function is to display the company portfolio throughout the day so when prospectus or existing clients of the company are greeted in the waiting area by this on-going presentation.
Every month the company has enough clientele or new markets to create a new medium sized 10 page, 10 case study portfolio.
Structure The end product needs to be stable and be able to stand the weight of the display system or pictures of the portfolios.
Aesthetics Because the system is going to sit in the main reception of the headquarters of courts – and courts is primarily design agency, and the headquarters have recently been re-furbished and re-designed to fit in with the ambient lighting and whitewashed walls.
The end product needs to fit in with the current living room waiting area. If not the It will not look in place and will cause concern for the client.
Its also very important that the end product is photographed well – showing all aspects of the design and manufacture side.
Ergonomics •The product needs to be designed and created with ergonomics in mind. Therefore the average height, to eye level . •How high the graphics and at what angle do they need to be placed?
•This is so that people using the system to look at new graphics etc are not straining their neck and eyes to look at the product in uncomfortable angles. •This would deem the product a failure!
Safety Slightly referring back to the structure of the product its needs to be weighty so it can hold its own weight.
•This means that free standing wise it will be highly unlikely it will topple over using heavy and study base. Wall mounted wise the correct sized brackets will be used.
Cost As shown in my client brief and specification Karen and I agreed on a price of £100.00 for the entreaty of the system. Its very important that I stick to this product – because if this product is a success it will be a great unique one-off order manufacture.
•Karen specified that she wouldn’t pay more than £100.00. However if the product works well and she is impressed more products may be produced for a higher price.
Client/Product Requirements Board: Research Summary
Materials used in the product will be as eco friendly as possible.
In order to reduce the amount of materials wasted from the cut off production, I’m going to investigate and plan into my cutting list.
Moral and Social Issues Environmental Issues
Materials used will not be environmentally dangerous to get rid of or to store. In order to reduce the amount of harmful material left over from the of cuts production and for its disposal after its useful life has expired
Evaluation of Requirement Board:In evaluation to this client requirements board it quite clearly sums out how the client wants the finished product to look, function and cost.
With this feed-back I can now look into and start coming up with initial ideas and get client and end-user feed-back..
The end user being business men and women who often have to wait around in waiting areas, who look for that something interesting to look at!
Research: Presentations InternationalExhibition Stand Designers
Research: Current Displays and there characteristics.Laura from Presentations then passed my on to Roy Kenneth the functional designer for the pop-up display division at the design studio.
I met with Roy in Windsor on December 13th 2009 to discuss some of the pop-up display systems that he has designed.
I took notes throughout the meeting and below is a write up of what we discussed.
Roy said that when designing a portable display system you must make it simple to put up and lightweight so that its easy to carry between 2 people depending on how many are displaying it.
Needs to have a components list and an operation set up and embedded into the system: I.E stuck to the inside case..
I also discussed the lighting issue, and showed Roy my design for the system. He expressed that all lighting gets hot, and therefore especially at exhibitions there is a danger that people can burn themselves on it.
All lighting and or anything else dangerous or that gives off heat must be displayed/stored above the exhibition safely.
ALSO: After speaking to Laura again regarding Power supplies – they are delivered to the stands through the roof and drape down onto the stand themselves.
Laura also expressed that the power voltage is enough to supply up to 20 plasma screens so therfore it will be enough for two 240wt lights.
Roy also expressed that displays systems unfortunately go out of date..
- By design and content of what your displaying (literature), logos??
- Not only this but also the design of the system as well. It needs to look simple to the eye, not confusing and very minimalist.
Client Analysis: Karen’s Feed-Back on this…I think Roy has given some really clear points and I hope to think if these criteria are met then we could have a successfully designed system to work with.
Design Ideas:
Design idea 3:This design is very modern. It’s a curving single
simple block containing images from the portfolio.
Backlighting: Backlighting will bring out the images and will
express them to the client/viewer of the system.
Spotlights will enhance the colour
of the system:
The most important part is that the images can be
changed when the company portfolio
is changed.
This mock-up shows how the system will layout in the room. Giving a good idea of how it will look in
contrast to its surroundings.
Design 1: This design is a simple clear cut box.
Expressing right-angles and reflecting on the way the
newly designed office looks.
Wall mounted: This means that its out of the way away from the floor,
looking minimalist
Most importantly the images can be changed annually when the
company portfolio changes..
For each image there will be a slight back-drop, allowing lighting
to be inserted. Expressing and maximizing the attention of the
viewer into the images.
This small mock-up of the room shows how the product will look in
comparison to the rest of the room. Again the box can either be tilted
vertically or horizontally giving it a fresh new look!
Above are some designs of pop-up stands that are movable. However I don’t think these best fit the criteria.
Design idea 2:This design is again very modern, and I think it would compel well with the rest of the office, making the most of modern curves.

Section B: Generating ideas
Section C: Developing and communicating design proposalsThis shows a scan in of some Development Sketches I’ve made. This expresses the wall mounted display system and how it would work.
Here shows how the system could be displayed, either square, or full length
mirror style.
This enlarged copped screenshot shows how the bracket would fit into the wall if it were wall mounted.
The bracket would have to be the correct length and width depending on the size and the height.
Caps can be put on the front of the bracket to make them more ascetically pleasing.
These two screenshots show the way in which the acrylic will hold the paper graphic display. Enlarged on the left is the sandwidge effect were the paper is sandwidge between two sheets of acrylic.

This design shows a wall mounted or free standing display system. Its modern and can display the logos and graphics on three different panels or three different ways.
This product is designed like most of mine to be portable or free standing.However I have designed this so that It can be wall mounted and more permanent.
This product needs a electricity point for the spotlights to work.
Materials used for this, it would be a metal frame and have acrylic pop-in-panels so that they can be easily changed and adjusted.

This display system has been designed along the lines of one large slogan or logo.
This product is moveable, however its got to have an electricity point for the spot lights to work.
Materials used for this an Aluminium Frame (Lightweight) and then acrylic in the middle again lightweight) ?
This product is very modern and would fit in well in Karen's Office.It’s a floor too ceiling display.
Product would not be movable. It would need brackets and specific measurement for one place and one place only in the room.
The hanging system is made from metal mesh wiring (strong and secure) and will be connected to a metal bracket in the wall. At least 4cm’s in. The display panels within the system will be made from acrylic and have engraved company logos.

This product is simple. But would work well. Its like a large photo frame, however linked to the wall.
This product isn’t permanent, however it will be screwed into the wall their for it will leave holes in the wall were it was before.
The frame of the product is made from stainless steel giving off a very ascetically pleasing look. The display system in the middle is made from acrylic and shows off the logos, slogans and graphics using engraving's ?

This design shows great use of angles.
Having different panels curve at different angles and lights shinning on allow the display system
This product would be completely movable. It looks like it could be split and built up of 4 different sections allowing more to be added on If necessary.
The great thing about this design is it could be wall mounted if Karen wants it too look more permanent in her office, however It will still look effective just floor standing.-
When designing this product I was thinking wood, however now its design its also possible to think Perspex suction formed allowing to mix and match colours and give off a really good futuristic and design feeling.
When designing this, I was thinking of an acrylic front and using a glass base, so it was sturdy and ascetically pleasing.
I also designed it so it was moveable and not permanently placed on the wall. The bad thing about this product is that its slim and doesn’t

Karen’s Feedback:
Dislike this design – would look very out of place for the environment we have planned.
It wouldn’t fit right on the wall – if you look at all the objects within the reception they are all square, coffee table, sofas and even down to small detail like square indents on the wall you can see it won’t fit in.

We are now living in the 21st century and having to manually update and change portfolio images into the display system would be a lumber.
Therefore I discussed with Karen the idea of having an electronic plasma system displaying the portfolio and welcome image.
Change of plan….Karen and I came up with a new better idea!
This was discussed on a meeting on the 13th January:

- Ross proposed using an electronic system to display the portfolio! I completely agree! It will fit in well with the company profile as he suggests.
- Ergonomics of the system – the height needs to be correct and meet the eye!
- The product I think will be best facing down the corridor because the clients all ready have the plasma screen with constant news flashing on – so I think two screens might be too intimidating. However, this is something we can look into and review once the product is designed and built.
