Unit 78 – Digital Graphics for Computer Games HA3 – Transformation Production Log

Name: Luke Summers

Created and finished HA3 task 1, research document. To do this, I looked into existing games that related to the game I wanted to create. I did this to give me self and idea of what games are already available and to get some inspiration from game titles I love in creating my own game, whether it’s the outfit, the general theme of the game or even a simple asset of the game like a vehicle that I might have wanted to include. I was successful in my research and was able to find assets that could help me to begin production for my final product. I used Microsoft Word to create this research document.

Created and finished HA3 task 2, ideas map. To create this mind map I used the site Bubbl.US, this site allows you to use its tools to create a mind map enabling you to develop your own ideas on whatever it is you want to develop your ideas on. When creating the mind map that you can see in the picture below, I was able to develop ideas as I went a long, as one thing came to mind so did another and I was able to create different headings and sub headings.

Synopsis. To create my synopsis I first researched using the internet, what different synopsis’s for already existing games there were, for inspiration. This helped me to create my own, which I did so by using Photoshop. I used several layers, one for my text, one for my image and one for the plain black background, I think by doing this I made a fairly good synopsis.

Completed HA3 task 3, character profile. In order to draw my draft sketches, I had to conduct some research into what my character will be like and what he might look like. I decided to outline the basics of my character, his name, age, gender, race and I included some information about his personality and lifestyle and appearance. I included some pictures in my research to help visualize what my character might look like. To create this document I used Microsoft Word.

Conducted research for draft sketches. This research was conducted to get an idea of what my character will look like, so I can decide how I am going to make him look during the main production stage. I was contemplating two possible looks, a fairly casual look in which my character would wear a suit or a more tradition reaper style look. Due to my limited skills with the software Adobe Illustrator, I decided to go with the reaper look. To create this document I used Microsoft Word.

Drew and scanned draft sketches. Using a standard pencil and a blue colouring pencil I drew up some very rough sketches of what I wanted my character to look like. AS my drawing skills are fairly limited, my attempt was not of the best standard. Using my personal scanner, I scanned the two drawings and saved them on my computer so I could use them as I template for my first attempt of what my character will look like using Adobe Illustrator.

Draft illustration. Using Adobe Illustrator I imported my drawing into a new layer and began to layer images over it to create my final draft.

As a restriction of my drawing skills, this draft was not of a very high standard, so a mor stable technique was used next.

As I did this part of my work outside of college, I was limited in photography equipment, so I decided to use my laptop to take the picture I would later use as my template for my main character on Adobe Illustrator.

Once I had taken my picture, I was then ready to import it into Adobe Illustrator to begin my final illustration of my character.

Using Adobe Illustrator, I began to layer on different shapes and outlines onto the template of myself.

I used fairly simple shapes on each layer to create my final product, which I think is of a satisfactory standard. The Adobe Illustrator software was a fairly new concept to me while I was instructed to take on this task, so I was on the quality of work I could produce having still trying to learn how to use the tools.

Now that I was happy with my character that I had created using Adobe Illustrator, I was ready to create a background. I did this using Adobe Illustrator.

Background

To create my background, I used fairl primitive shapes to create a scene depicting the top of a buliding in a city at night time with the moon and skycrapers in the background. I did this using several layers and a vast anount duplication.

Finished product, background and character combined. Now that I had my background and my main character, I decided to import the main character into a new file with the background on a separate layer, I did this so I could finalize my work and by adding a background to the character it made the image look more appealing.
