LAKBAY LOKAL 2018

Known as the “Art Capital of the Philippines,” the town of Angono in Rizal province is ideal for thoselooking for a unique art and food tour near Manila. Home to the famed Angono-Binangonan Petrogylphs (the oldest known work of art in the country), quirky folk art museums andrestaurants serving native and exotic cuisine, Angono offers an alternative destination for weekend foodtrips. UAP Quezon City embarked on a Lakbay Lokal 2018 tour of Rizal Province, held last January 13,2018. 35 Chapter members participated on this Local tour. Both educational and food trip was the highlightof the Lokal Tour.

Angono is a bit underrated compared to popular foodie destinations like Tagaytay and Pampanga. But if you’re into folk art and food, it can be an interesting road trip destination for those based in the metro. It’s easy enough to get here by public or private transportation. I prefer driving a motorcycle because youcan avoid the traffic. We usually pass Angono going to Art’s hometown in Binangonan, so we’ve managedto sample a lot of the restaurants in the area over the years. But I’m highlighting the ones where you canenjoy food and local art/culture at the same time.

Angono is best known for celebrating the Higantes Festival, a fiesta held in honor of San Clemente, which is celebrated with a procession of higantes or gian paper mache effigies, which have become asymbol of the local culture. You can see Higantes and festival masks and heads decorating a lot of thelocal restaurants. For those who want to get a taste of Angono’s distinctive folk art with native cuisine, hereare my top picks of where to eat there.

Nemiranda Arthouse and Atelier Museum CafeNemiranda Arthouse and Atelier Museum Cafe is a family art museum owned by renowned Angono artistNemesio R. Miranda (more popularly known as Nemiranda) who specializes in paintings and sculpturescelebrating the rural scenery and figures from folklore.

The Atelier Museum Cafe serves local specialties like fried itik (duck), pesang dalag (stewedmudfish), sinigang na kanduli (a type of catfish), alongside regular Pinoy staples like tapsilog, grilled liempo, chicken barbecue and pork sisig at affordable prices.

AngNewNo Arts Design CafeAngNewNo Arts Design Cafe gives a more modern spin to folk art and food. The cafe’s name is theshortened version of the term “Ang New Angono” (The New Angono) and the place serves as a gallery foraspiring artists.

St. Jerome Parish Church (also known as Morong Church) is a Roman Catholic churchlocated in Morong, Rizal, Philippines. It was built under forced labor during the Spanish colonization in thecountry, where men, women, and even children had to dig stones from a hill called Kay Ngaya; lime fromthe stones of the mountain Kay Maputi; and sand and gravel from Morong River.

The National Shrine Of Our Lady Of Peace And Good Voyage

The Antipolo Cathedral, also known as National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, is one ofthe most well-known destinations in Antipolo. It is also a popular pilgrimage site among Catholics in thePhilippines and other neighboring countries. The church was first established and was governed by theJesuits in 1591. The church houses the image of Nuestra Senora de la Paz y Buenviaje.

Nemiranda ArthouseAngono, Rizal takes pride of having several museum destinations where one can also dine

and marvel at the artistry in the form of sculptures, paintings and the likes. It seems its a place wherethe people were more into art and creativity.

Nemiranda Arthouse (The House of Myth and Legends) was created by Nemesio B. Miranda,or Nemiranda himself. He is famous for bringing in a form of art called “Imaginative Figurism” or thedrawing of the human form from pure imagination. This art house showcases Angono’s mysticcharms as well as the sculptured Filipino myths and legends, one of which is “Si Malakas at SiMaganda”. Situated at

10 Doña Elena St. Doña Justa Village I Angono, Rizal. The Nemiranda ArtHouse andMuseum is located in Dona Justa Subdivision Angono, was designed and created by using old localmaterials such as bamboo, sawali, and old recycled material from old churches and convents inAngono, Rizal. The arthouse has 4 facets, which are the house gallery, Foyer, Second FloorGalleries, and the Main Gallery. Many of the artworks depicts Angono's mystic legends andlocal olklores such as "Ang Nuno", "Habagat", "The Mermaid of Angono", "Amihan", and "Malakasat Maganda".

The Nemiranda Arthouse/Atelier Cafe, the art gallery cum coffee shop of Angonon artistNemesio "Nemi" R. Miranda, is a lofty old wood, bamboo and concrete house converted into a home-studio with a prominent signage at the street corner.Visitors enter the arthouse (also known as "The House of Myths and Legends"), via a side gate, intothe coffee shop. The extensive, 3-floor art gallery has a massive, larger-than-life, pastel blue stonemermaid (sirena) prominently placed above the art gallery's arched entrance.

Borrowing from what was already written about the Nemiranda Arthouse, the materials usedin the arthouse could have been the oldest in Angono. The Arthouse is surrounded by mythical reliefmurals, and three dimensional mythological characters such as The Mermaid of Angono, "Amihan",Habagat" and Mariang Makiling", Bernardo Carpio", "Mutya ng Pasig", "Malakas at Maganda", and"Ang Nuno". whole edifice is also called the house of legends, an artistic creation by the artisthimself. The gallery is a showcase of Nemiranda and his five children namely; Katrina, Zarah, PaulGreco, Don Nemesio III, and Chesca attached to the gallery is also the residence of the Nemirandafamily which has become part of tourist interests because of its turn of the century wood design, component, showcasing, some of the early works of Nemiranda in the sixties and seventies.”

St. JEROME PARISH CHURCHSt. Jerome Parish Church (also known as Morong Church) is a Roman Catholic church locatedin Morong, Rizal, Philippines. It was built under forced labor during the Spanish colonization in the country, where men, women, and even children had to dig stones from a hill called Kay Ngaya; lime from the stonesof the mountain Kay Maputi; and sand and gravel from Morong River.

Architecture

The Morong facade and bell tower is easily the most striking of all church facades along Laguna de Bay.Frequently photographed and described as baroque, the facade/bell tower is more properly describedas Baroque Revival architecture. The central portion of the facade surges outward and the catenatedbalustrade above give the whole a dynamic felling. Various decorative elements, some Mexican in origin, give the facade a richness characteristic of Baroque. Four angels, representing the cardinal virtues, stand atthe corners of the bell tower. Fr. Felix Huerta, writing in 1852, states that the facade had finials shaped asjars and shells used for illuminating it.It is said that it was built by Chinese craftsmen as evidence: two Chinese lion sculptures ( a boy and a girllion ) at the entrance to the steep driveway. One lion, said to be the girl lion, was stolen between 2000 and2005. Local folklore said that the female lion has a hidden treasure inside it. While the other lion, the malelion, is safeguarded at the St. Jerome school vicinity. The stone and mortar church which has a three-story facade, and an octagonal bell tower whose cross isilluminated at night and can be seen from the surrounding countryside. The bell tower of the church is usedby local fisher man in the nearby towns as a light house when fishing at night and during the storm. ItsFrontispiece and he belfry were renovated by Bartolome Palatino of Paete, between 1850-1853.

1st class relic of St. Jerome

An added attraction in the church of Morong is the first class relic of the town's patron saint Saint Jerome;(Patron of scholars of the bible, Saint who translated the bible, feast day : September 30). The first class relic(a part of the saint's body) was given to the parish year 2005, through the effort of then parish priest Rev. Fr.Lawrence "Larry" Paz, when they had their first pilgrimage tour to holy land and Vatican City. The relic is publicly exposed every Saturday during the anticipated mass, guarded by the knights of SaintJerome. While the kissing of the relic is done every last Saturday of the month. After two years, another relicwas given, in 2007 to the parish again as a gift from the main chaplain of the church of St. Jerome in Rome, this time bigger. This relic is now buried on top of the table of the main altar which is being kissed by thepriest every time there is a mass.J

NATIONAL SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF PEACE ANDGOOD VOYAGE (ANTIPOLO CITY)

The Antipolo Cathedral, also a national shrine (National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace andGood Voyage), is a favorite pilgrimage site. It’s one of the two well-known destinations in Antipolo(the other is Hinulugang Taktak). We decided to visit this cathedral one cloudy afternoon, inpreparation for the visita iglesia we plan in the neighboring province of Laguna.

In front of the church is the marker placed in 1937 by the Historical Research and MarkersCommittee. The marker gives us a brief history of the Nuestra Senora de la Paz y Buen Viaje.

The Antipolo Cathedral, built by the Jesuits between 1630-1633, damaged during theearthquakes of 1645, 1824 and 1883. We could have a good idea of strong earthquakes in the pastbased on damage to churches, just like the Manila Cathedral and the churches of Ilocos.

The image of the Virgin was discovered by a Spanish Governor named Don Juan Nino deTabora in 1626. It was said that when Gov. Tabora died, the image was turned over to the JesuitFathers who were then constructing a church in Antipolo. Another church was also being plannedto be constructed in honor of Our Lady in Barrio Sta. Cruz. However, the brown image always “gotlost” and was always found on the trunk of the Tipolo tree that stood on the original site of the oldchurch. The Fathers and local folks took this as a sign that the image didn’t want to leave that placeso they made a pedestal carved out the trunk of the Tipolo tree. Henceforth, the image was referredto as the Virgin of Antipolo

In 1954, Antipolo Church was declared as a national shrine of the Philippines. Statues of thetwelve apostles were erected on top of the church’s main door and pilasters. The church was greatlydamaged in 1639’s Chinese uprising and various earthquakes from 1645 to 1863.

People primarily go to Antipolo Cathedral to have their vehicles blessed. While some visitbefore going on long journeys. In fact, one of the most well-known traditions of religious overseasFilipino workers (OFWs) is visiting the Cathedral before leaving for another country. In my opinion, any trip to Antipolo would not be complete without stopping by the Cathedral.
