STUDY IN THE UNITED KINGDOM OR IRELANDUC students may experience the United Kingdom (UK) or the Republic of Ireland by studying at one of EAP’s 21 host universities in England, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland. A variety of options are available, including summer, quarter/semester, and academic year programs.

UC students have the unique opportunity to read broadly in a given field and are encouraged to take course offerings not normally available at their home UC campuses. Instruction generally consists of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and labs, with more independent study opportunities than at UC. Classes are small by American standards, which creates a stimulating learning environment, often with more personal instruction and student-teacher interaction than at UC. As a result, EAP students find academic programs in the UK and Ireland to be interesting and challenging.

UC STUDENT INTERN PROGRAM EAP Study Centers maintain a website of internship opportunities available for student participation during and following their EAP term/year abroad (eap.ucop.edu/eap/country/uk/intern).

The internships are open to students at all EAP locations in the United Kingdom and Ireland. These non-unit-bearing internships are in business and industry, government, the arts, and non-profit public interest groups. Although most are located within the London area, the EAP Study Centers are working to expand options into other areas.

“ I was able to meet so many different people, which enabled me to expand

my way of thinking about the world. After studying abroad I have matured

incredibly and am comfortable traveling with only a backpack full of clothes (instead of

my previous usual two suitcases). Studying abroad has inspired me to pursue graduate

UNIVERSITY OF YORK Spring two-quarter or academic yearThe University of York enrolls about 14,000 students from almost 100 countries. Strong disciplines include archaeology, art history, biological science, computer science, economics, electrical engineering, English (a strong English background is required), history, linguistics, music, political science, psychology, social policy, social work, and sociology.

With more than 30 departments, and consistently ranked among the top 10 UK universities, York has a great international reputation for the quality of its teaching and research. York encourages specialized study in the student’s major field. Students at York are assigned an advisor or director of studies who helps them progress throughout the program.

The university occupies an attractive 200-acre lakeside campus at Heslington, just outside of York. York is one of the prettier historic towns in England. The city center features ancient timbered houses lining narrow, crooked streets. As a student city, York is big enough to feel cosmopolitan, but small enough not to be overwhelming. York provides excellent theater, cinema, concerts, and other cultural events as well as an attractive range of pubs and restaurants. Located on the north/south rail line, both London and Edinburgh are only about two hours away by train.

For more information, see the University of York website at www.york.ac.uk/admin/intnat.

“EAP helped me to realize my potential socially and academically. As an English

major I was able to take a variety of classes that counted toward my degree and

gave me a better understanding of both British and Irish culture. My professors

were active and engaged in their lectures, and were equally as interested in talking to

their students outside of class. I was not only learning about my host country, but about

myself and my country. My EAP experience was rich, and so far, the best academic and personal decision I’ve ever made.”

On-site SupportEAP students are supported by UC’s network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with EAP host universities throughout the world.

EAP options in the United Kingdom and Ireland are administered from two Study Centers, one located in London and the other in Edinburgh. EAP Study Center Directors and staff advise students on academic matters to ensure that their academic programs meet UC requirements. They also provide general information and help with living in the UK and Ireland. Each host university has advisors who work with EAP students to plan their course of study.

Students with disabilities can and do study abroad. Explore your options at eap.ucop.edu/eap/reference/guide/disabilities.htm.

STUDENT SAFETYStudent safety is a top priority. EAP continually monitors local and international conditions and provides support, counseling, and safety advisories. In addition, EAP networks with local US embassies and consulates, the US Department of State, and other international student exchange programs at each site.

See EAP Emergency Alerts at eap.ucop.edu/911.

Plan AheadThe key to success on EAP is careful planning. You can make normal progress toward your UC graduation by fulfilling major, minor, breadth, or elective course requirements while abroad. EAP students earn UC credit for the work they complete abroad, and EAP courses and grades are recorded on students’ official UC transcripts. Your home UC department and college will determine how courses taken on EAP apply toward your major and general education requirements. Meet with your academic advisors to discuss study abroad possibilities. You can find program details and links to host institutions, and search for programs by specific areas of study at eap.ucop.edu/programwizard.

General Selection RequirementsRequirements vary by program. Most programs have prerequisites and all programs have a minimum GPA requirement. Some programs require one to two years of university-level training in the host country language. For further details see your Campus EAP Office and the EAP website.

In addition to program-specific requirements, all applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

• Serious academic goals and a clear plan for integrating EAP studies into the student’s UC degree program

• Social and cross-cultural sensitivity; maturity; ability to adapt successfully to a different environment and a new education system; ability to assess and exhibit appropriate behavior in a variety of situations

• Willingness to abide by program regulations

• Endorsement by the Campus EAP Selection Committee and completion of all campus-specific requirements (an interview may be required)

HOW TO APPLYStudents must submit a complete application to the Campus EAP Office. Applications are due about six to eight months before the programs begin. Application information, exact deadline dates, and other details are available at your Campus EAP Office and on the EAP website at eap.ucop.edu.
