Spring 2014

~ President’s Message ~

United Methodist Women

Our Two Cents Oregon/Idaho Conference

Your Conference Executive team met in January and we came away

so excited about the coming year.

1) Its “Undie Sunday” time again! This year, we’d like each unit to

again do an “Undie Sunday” drive but do it in your church and

support a local agency, or two! Then, let us know how it went and

who you were able to benefit with your “undies.” We’d love photos

of your signs and the boxes and bags of “undies.”

2) Plans are underway for a six-hour “Ubuntu Package" at Mission

u for individuals unable to attend the full or 2 day Mission u but interested in

community service and the Spiritual Growth study, "How Is It with Your Soul?" The

Ubuntu Package will begin with worship followed by a service project, lunch, and a

class. High school youth may participate with parents; activities and child care are

planned for younger children. Watch for more information. “The day of service is named for the Zulu term ubuntu, which means “I am human

because you are human.” In that spirit of solidarity, United Methodist Women members

live out their mission tradition of service with the local community. “…. from response

magazine.

3) We’re planning on taking Mission u on the road later this year. For many, trying to

get to Newberg or Boise for 2 to 4 days is a real challenge. We hope to offer a one day

mission event in a location nearer to you. This will be a trial run, and as we work the

bugs out, next year we hope to offer it in more locations.

4) Many of you have been having a Call to Prayer and Self Denial program and

offering. Did you know that monies from last year’s offering have returned to benefit

programs right here in the Oregon-Idaho Conference? Look elsewhere in the newsletter

for the details, or read page 12-13 of the February 2014 response magazine.

These are things the Conference UMW is planning. But, what are you doing in your

unit? We want to hear about and showcase your mission outreach projects on the

UMW Facebook page, the UMOI Connector,

even response magazine. Let us know! Send

your photos and stories to Jeannie Boese at:

[email protected]

Exciting news--we met our Conference wide

goal to Pledge to Mission!! Thank you all

for making that happen.

I’m looking forward to hearing of the ways

your unit is sharing faith, hope, and love in

action in your community.

Our Two Cents 2 Spring 2014

The United Methodist Women’s Annual Conference meeting date has been set. And those of you from Oregon

will be glad to know it is not on game day, but it is in Eugene, Oregon. The date is October 25 at Eugene First

United Methodist Church 1376 Olive Street.

I know October 25 is long ways off, but please get it on your calendar and plan to attend. We have a full day

planned for you.

This year as a project we will be helping with the Cesar Chavez Backpack Program that Eugene First helps with.

For some of you who do not know what the backpack program is---it is a program that provides food for children

living in poverty to have food over the weekend.

The following canned goods would be a great contribution to the backpack program:

Tuna

Chicken

Beef stew

Beans: black, pinto, kidney, refried, etc.

Soups

Vegetables: green beans, corn, peas, etc.

Fruit: peaches, pears, pineapple, etc.

No home canned please.

We know that United Methodist Women has always been on the forefront of Missions from the first 6 women in

1869 to the present membership of nearly one million, and, our PURPOSE has remained essentially the same. We

still seek wholeness for ourselves and for others especially women, children and youth.

Please bring the canned items to Eugene First Oct. 25.

Lynda Montgomery, Vice President

Lynda Montgomery

The Western Jurisdiction Leadership Team invite you to save the date and join in

worship in Salt Lake City. Hope to see you there!

Call to Prayer and Self Denial Grants awarded in Oregon-Idaho Conference

Two grants from the 2013 Call to Prayer and Self Denial Offering were given to projects in the Oregon-Idaho

Conference.

Skills for Success Employability Program, presented through Advocates for Survivors of Domestic Violence and

Sexual Assault of Hailey, Idaho received a grant. The funds will help low-income and/or unemployed community

members with financial education and credit counseling and matched saving accounts.

Adult Financial Literacy: Financial Fitness for Life and Money Smart, a program of Bienestar from Hillsboro,

Oregon, also received a grant to help adult residents grow assets

From: response Magazine, Feb. 2014.

Gertrude Boyd Crane Scholarship

Is there a woman in your church who is working towards an advance degree in a church related vocation? Please

encourage her to apply for the Gertrude Boyd Crane Scholarship offered through the United Methodist Women.

Applications are being accepted now for the 2014-2015 academic year. For full details and application form, go to:

umoi.org/umw and click on Gertrude Boyd Crane Scholarship.

Seeking Nominations For Charter For Racial Justice Award

Each year we seek nominations from around the Oregon-Idaho Conference to receive the Charter for

Racial Justice award. Since the Charter for Racial Justice was created and adopted by the United

Methodist Women in 1978, as an organization we have continued the urgent call for study and action

on the principle and goals. Does your church have an activity that in any way promotes racial

equality? Perhaps you have an interfaith group meeting at your church or even a bible study that

promotes racial awareness. What activity is your unit, your church or your organization involved in

that you could nominate to receive this Charter for Racial Justice Award? A nominations form and

full details are available at: umoi.org/umw and click on Charter for Racial Justice Award.

Application deadline is April 1, 2014.

Zimmerman Trust Grant

Several years ago, through the generosity of Mrs. Isobel Zimmerman, a trust was established and endowed to the

United Methodist Women to provide funds for educational opportunities or leadership development for a person(s)

of Native American or African American descent. Please look around your congregation—the projects these funds

could be used for are endless! The criteria and the application for the Zimmerman Trust Grant can be found at:

www.umw.umoi.org/umw. The deadline for applying is April 1, 2014.

Our Two Cents 5 Spring 2014

We Are Doing A New Thing

When Harriett Jane Olson spoke at the Oregon-Idaho Conference Annual Meeting last October, she observed that

change used to come in waves. The world changed and United Methodist Women responded to the change. Then

the world settled into a “new normal.” Today, change seems to be continuous. United Methodist Women must

respond to the changes but we don’t get time to settle into a new normal before the next challenge presents itself.

Perhaps this is what the prophet Isaiah was preparing us for: “Thus says the LORD…I am about to do a new thing;

now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” (Isaiah

43:16 – 19) Isaiah is warning that the world will be turned upside-down.

With the recent reorganization of United Methodist Women, each of the leadership teams is no longer required to

fill eleven positions. There are only four required positions: president, secretary, treasurer and chair of

nominations. Each leadership team has more flexibility to create a team that suits its needs. But, here’s the catch,

the Purpose hasn’t changed and the mission hasn’t changed. So the question becomes how do we find the people to

do the work?

There is no blueprint for the new structure. There is flexibility and room for creativity.

The conference mission coordinator for Social Action used to be able to rely on her counterparts in the districts and

local units. Today, there is no guarantee that such counterparts exist.

So instead of counterparts, I am looking for women interested in becoming part of the Oregon-Idaho Advocacy

Network. Members of the network don’t have to be part of a leadership team, but they can be. They may even hold

an office other than mission coordinator for social action. The only requirement is that members have a hunger for

justice and a willingness to take action.

Taking action does not have to be time-consuming or scary (but it can be). Action begins by becoming informed on

justice issues. Action can include writing or calling political leaders. It can also include testifying in favor of or

against a piece of legislation. Holding a candlelight or prayer vigil is taking action. And, yes, performing acts of

civil disobedience, as our UMW leadership did recently in Washington D.C., is taking action.

If you are interested in becoming part of this new network, please send me you contact information. You may also

let me know which issues are of special concern to you.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Website Updated Our web address: www.orid.org/umw.

Our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/OregonIdahoUMW

I have been working on making our website pages easier to use. Our home page is

much shorter, and I have created subpages for some of the information that used to be

on the home page. All of the subpages are listed in the column to the left of the main

content. Pages include each of the districts, our Reading Program, Social Action, Mis-

sion u, Photos, our Charter for Racial Justice nomination form and Charter Club form, Gertrude Boyd Crane

Scholarship information and application form, the Zimmerman Grant Trust information and application form,

“Our Two Cents” newsletters, our officers, and the 2014 calendar of events.

I try to keep the website up to date, but there is a lot of content and I don’t always manage it. If you see something

out of date, please let me know and I’ll try to fix it as soon as I can.

If you have suggestions for our website, please let me know, and I will take your suggestions into consideration.

The whole Oregon-Idaho Conference website will have a new look soon, including our pages.

Pledge to Mission, World Thank Offering, Special Mission Recognition, Gift to Mission and Gift in

Memory, these are the five channels of giving for the United Methodist Women to use in support of their

mission projects world wide. As we approach the seasons of Easter, Mother’s Day and Graduation, let us

pause for a moment and look at just one of these channels. Gift to Mission cards come in a variety of

subjects. How better to honor someone on their special day than with a Gift to Mission in their honor.

May God lift you up on Eagle’s wings and hold you in the palm of God’s hand.

Sometime ago one of my friends gave me a paper that had words of wisdom collected from many sources.

Here are a few of them:

If you believe what you say, what you say is more believable.

The closer we walk with God, the clearer we see his guidance.

If you see someone without a smile today give them one of yours.

Anger is just one letter short of danger.

G-O-O-D without G-O-D becomes a “o”.

Little things done for God become great things.

A friend is the first person who comes in when the whole world has gone out.

When life looks hopeless look to the God of Hope.

For every minute you are angry you lose 60 seconds of happiness.

Your shoulder of encouragement can help lighten the heaviest burden.

People are like stained glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out;

But when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light within. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross

People who know how to brighten a day with heartwarming smiles and with kind word they say,

People who know how to gently impart the comfort it takes to cheer somebody’s heart

People who know how to always come through when there’s anything they can possibly do,

People who know how to willingly share, who know how to give and who know how to care, who know how to

let all their warm feelings show.

Are people that others feel lucky to know. (Amanda Bradley)

Design your own Assembly! Make It Happen! Assembly in April this year is a grass roots event that will help

you find your individual voice for mission. The town hall meeting, core workshops and general workshops are

described online at Assembly2014 so you can plan your own Assembly. No need to sign up for the workshops

in advance, they will be first come, first served. Visit the workshops page online to read the detailed

descriptions. On the right hand side you'll see links to the Experience Hall and film festival.

You can follow the issues and spiritual goals that interest you the most. You can make your own plan ahead of

your arrival. What is your interest?

Here are a few suggestions:

Attend workshops such as Social Justice as a Spiritual Pursuit, How is it With Your Soul? Fresh Approaches to

Reading the Bible.

Watch the film Herman's House at the film forum. Attend Resisting the Rollback of Civil Rights, Creating

Inclusive Congregations and Dismantling Racism.

Watch the films Gasland and Chasing Ice at the film forum. Attend the Challenging Fracking and What do

Race and Class Have to do with Climate Change?

Attend the workshops on Domestic Violence, Getting Men Involved and Women Helping Women, Watch the

film I Believe In You, Faith's Response to Intimate Partner Violence at the film forum.

Attend the core workshop Tending to Body, Heart and Mind and Earth. Love like you've Never Been Hurt,

Caring for Our Elderly Parents, and for young women 18-25, Sexuality, Self-Image, Self-Love.

And, these are only a few suggestions.....

If you haven't registered for Assembly 2014, there is still time! Just go online to Assembly 2014 to

register. Or, go to Oregon-Idaho Conference UMW website and click on the link to Assembly 2014

registration. There are still rooms reserved under Oregon-Idaho Conference, at a discounted rate at Courtyard

by Marriott, Louisville phone 502.562.0200.

Our Two Cents 8 Spring 2014

There are lots of tidbits to share with you this time. Please review these items so you can stay up to date on the

latest information.

A NEW membership brochure is available: “We Are United Methodist Women”. FREE, item M5218.

(This new brochure combines and replaces the information found in “Membership Joys” and “Join United

Methodist Women”.)

A NEW 13-page booklet has been developed to tell the history of UMW: “On a Path for Mission”. FREE,

item M5219. Each unit should have a copy of this booklet for reference. (This replaces the green

“United Methodist Women in Mission”. )

Two important resources have been updated: “Guidelines for Leading Your Congregation 2013-2016

Women’s Ministries” $3.25 per copy, item M3205 and “Social Principles of the United Methodist

Church 2013-2016” $2.99 per copy, item M3206.

All of the items listed above may be ordered from the Mission Resource Center at 1-800-305-9857 or ordered

on-line at www.umwmissionresources.org (e-store)

Those of you who have subscribed to the 2014 Sample Mailing will receive your first shipment in early April!

Your package will contain the new texts for Mission u that will be used this summer.

Pop quiz! (True or False?) Study books used for Mission u can be counted toward your Reading Program

results. It’s TRUE. The texts can be counted in their corresponding category of the program.

Looking for a comprehensive list of Reading program books covering the titles eligible for credit during calendar

year 2014? You can find it online at http://www.umwonline.org/groups/readingprogram/ (We are also planning

to add the list to our own UMW Conference page for your convenience.)

You asked for this! Most of the 2014 Reading Program books are now available on both Kindle and Nook!

Using e-books is as easy way to save time and money. The savings are usually 15-20% off the usual retail price

for a bound book. But bear in mind, each time you purchase an e-book for your electronic reader, UMW loses a

small commission on that sale. You can remedy this by being generous in your individual Pledge to Mission. (I

think an extra $1.00 for each book you download would be a reasonable amount to consider.)

Attention holders of the UMW Handbook for 2013-2016: Additional text has been added to pages 121, 137 and

147. In all 3 cases, the text is exactly the same wording for each page. Added: “g. No elected or appointed

leader of the (district/conference/jurisdiction) organization will hold any other office beyond the local unit

of United Methodist women.” Copy this information onto each corresponding page of your handbook for

future reference. If your unit does not have a handbook you may purchase one at the Mission Resource Center.

It is also available free of charge if you download it from the UMW website.

Did you notice the fresh look to the UMW website? Check it out. www.Unitedmethodistwomen.org

Nominations is a year round process! We say that almost automatically now, but let’s remember what it means. It

means that at any time of the year we are multi-tasking—soliciting recommendations at District events, following

up with phone calls or visits to fill our Talent Banks, updating our Term and Tenure records, evaluating Leadership

Team members, listening carefully at team meetings for new leadership needs.

It also means that at this time of year we are in an intensifying part of the cycle! We know that election of District

officers happens in the fall, and that our slates must be presented to the membership (usually via newsletter) 30 days

before that, and that the slate must be presented to the District Leadership Team before that—which often means

during the summer, at mission u. (If our election is at a different time, the timeline also changes.)

So now is the time when we are determining openings on the team, identifying potential leaders, deciding on first

choices for each opening, and assigning Nomination team members to contact each candidate.

And we remember that the practice of confidentiality prevents misunderstandings and protects the feelings of all

women involved.

How is the process going for you? Please contact me with questions I can help you with.

Blessings,

Karen Morray, Chair of Nominations

Congratulation to each District and the Oregon-Idaho United Methodist

Women!! We exceeded our pledge to Mission again!!!!

A wise politician once said. "It takes a village to raise a child". To me it could be

stated, "It takes United Methodist Women to help change the world". There are so

many issues needing our attention, and, yes, our money. Sometimes the needs feel

over whelming.

When we act together, not only as a conference but nationally, we are able to make a

difference. Hats off ladies for a job well done.

Our pledge to mission for 2014 is $130,000. Last year we gave over $130,000. I have

faith we can do it again.

This year as we live our United Methodist Women's pledge - as a community of

women - remember we are expanding concepts of mission through our prayers,

service and giving.

See you at Mission u. Sandy Flaherty, Treasurer

On your mark, get set, and go for the gold in adult learning experiences. The dates for Mission u 2014 are July

10 - 13, George Fox University, Newberg, Oregon and July 24 -27, Nazareth Retreat Center, Boise, Idaho.

Under the banner theme of “Mission u: Learning Together for Transformation of the World” are three studies:

• How Is It with Your Soul? (Spiritual Growth)

• The Church and People with Disabilities (Issue)

• The Roma of Europe (Geographic)

Leading How Is It with Your Soul? will be the Rev. Sandra Kimbrow and Sheila Sundahl. Framed within the

four verbs, “pray,” “learn,” “mentor” and “transform,” this study examines the historical setting of that important

question in Methodist class and band meetings and the perspectives on the four verbs from different cultural

contexts. Study Leaders for The Church and People with Disabilities are Dr. Roger Boe and the Rev. Janine

DeLaunay. Topics of Awareness, Accessibility, and Advocacy range from Biblical perspectives, overviews of

living with and adapting to varying disabilities, completion of an accessibility audit, and multi-sensory worship

and education. Returning this year to facilitate The Roma of Europe is Helen Van Nice. This history of

the Roma explores their treatment in contemporary European culture, their lifestyle, and their spirituality;

investigates ways that the church and other organizations work with them; and presents opportunities for

response and advocacy.

Focus sessions will complement the study topics and include:

• the Wesley Class Meetings during which “Salvation, fellowship, and discipleship were emphasized..” (Sin Ho

Kim, PhD candidate at Drew University)

• the Roma community in the Northwest

• an agency providing services for persons with disabilities and

• the Charter for Racial Justice.

Like last year, there will be a community project.

Unlike previous years Mission u 2014 is offering a one-day, 9 AM to 3 PM service and learning opportunity on

Saturday, July 12. Called the Ubuntu at Mission u 2014, the experience is intended to enroll individuals unable

to participate in either the two-day or four-day Mission u format. Please see the Ubuntu package flyer and

registration form in this publication for further information and promotion in your units and districts.

And about the Ice Cream Social, this year the spotlight will be on Assembly 2014.

Registration forms are in this issue. Aim for the gold and register now.
