Scriptural Reflection for the Week “Lord, make us turn to you, let us see your face and we shall be saved.” (see Psalm 80) Can you keep these words in your heart, on your lips, and always in your mind as Christmas 2018 approaches? It would be wise to do so. The world, and our sinful hearts, constantly beckon us to turn away from the thought of our true home, Heaven, and from God. So what does God do knowing us and all the tempta ons we face? God sends His Son, Jesus, the Messiah and Lord, as an infant born in a cave. Here we “see” His face. The face of one who is cold; homeless; a stranger in the land of His birth; and one who will be persecuted and put to death because His face reminds the comfortable ones of the ones they want to ignore. But to “see” His face in all of these offers salva on. How? Because to see Christ in the most afflicted and forgo en moves one to love—to move from a heart of stone to a heart of flesh. This Christmas, turn to “see” the face of God not just in the Na vity scene and creches in our churches, homes, and lawns, but in the suffering of a sister and brother who is sick, forgo en, abused, alone, and poor. Pray with your family when you sit around your Christmas dinner table: “Lord, make us turn to you, let us see your face and we shall be saved.” Advent Examina on of Conscience “I am the maidservant of the Lord; let it be done to me as you have said.” Will I truly make an offering of my very life as a gi to the

Lord this Christmas? Do I want the Lord to give priority to my way rather than

me accep ng His Way? Do I quickly lose faith when I am disappointed by

something that happens to me? In what ways can I bring Christ to birth in my family,

neighborhood, and work? Do I ask the Blessed Mother to make me strong as she was

when faced with life’s difficul es? An Act of Contri on “Lord Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Christmas Eve and Day Masses See page 2 of the bulle n for the complete Mass Schedule for both parishes. Your Christmas Gi to your Parish Please try to make your Christmas gi this year a truly sacrificial one. The Lord knows when we give from the fullness of our hearts. I have learned over the years that when I think I am going to miss what I give away to serve the Lord and His Church, it comes back to me many mes over. The Lord is never outdone in generosity!

The Feast of the Holy Family is next Sunday, December 30th. Invite a family member to a end Mass with you if you usually have to come alone. (Tell them you’ll take care of the collec on part for them!) May Jesus, Mary, and Joseph strengthen the bonds among all family members. One Final Thought “The season of Advent is like spring me in nature, when everything is renewed and so is fresh and healthy. Advent is also meant to do this for us—to refresh us and make us healthy, to be able to receive Christ in whatever form He may come to us.”

- St. Teresa of Calcu a

Dec. 23: The Gospel today tells of the Virgin Mary, pregnant herself, hurrying off to help her cousin Elizabeth. The model of good stewardship, she who had given herself to bear the Savior, gave her time and love to others as well.

Living Stewardship

Dec. 23: We are grateful this week for all stewards in both parishes who have the courage to follow the example of Mary by listening to God’s voice and saying “yes” to the tasks to which they have been called.

Sacrificing for One Another We demonstrate Living STEWARDSHIP in sharing our

blessings through our weekly offertory gi .

The Weekly Offertory Collection ideally is enough income to meet all parish needs. Today it offsets less than 50% of the necessary income; thus the need for more funds including annual giving (CMA), parish special event fees, parish program fees, along with bequests and miscellaneous donations make it possible to continue to do the good work of our Catholic Church.

Due to bulletin deadlines, weekly offertory totals are not available .

Pope Francis celebrates Mass for OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

Pope Francis celebrates Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday evening to mark the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. A working translation of the Pope's homily is below:

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior. For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness” (Lk 1,46-48). Thus begins the hymn, the Magnificat, through it, Mary becomes the first “teacher of the Gospel” (CELAM, Puebla, 290): she reminds us of the promises made to our fathers and invites us to sing the mercy of the Lord.

Mary teaches us that, regarding the art of mission and hope, lots of words and programs are not necessary. Her method is very simple: she walked and she sang.

She walked.

This is how the Gospel presents her to us after the annunciation of the Angel. In haste – but not anxiously – she walked toward the house of Elizabeth to accompany her in the last trimester of her pregnancy; she walked in haste toward Jesus when there was no wine at the wedding feast; and with hair already greying with the passing of years, she walked toward Golgotha to stand at the foot of the cross: on that threshold of darkness and pain, she did not evade it or run away—she walked in order to be there.

She walked to Tepeyac to accompany Juan Diego and she continues walking the Continent when, by means of an image or holy card, of a candle or a medal, of a rosary or a Hail Mary, she enters a house, a prison cell, a hospital room, an old age home, a school, a rehabilitation clinic... to say: “Am I not here, I who am your mother?” (Nican Mopohua, 119). She, more than anyone, knows how to draw near. She is a woman who walks with the delicateness and tenderness of a mother; she feels at home in family life; she unties us in spite of the many wrongs we manage to generate; and she teaches us to remain on our feet in the midst of the storm.

In Mary’s school we learn to keep walking to reach the places where we need to be—beside so many lives that have been lost or have been robbed of hope.

In Mary’s school we learn to walk through the neighborhood and the city, not with slippers delivering magical solutions, immediate answers or instantaneous results; not with the power of fantastic promises of pseudo-progress which, little by little, succeeds only in usurping cultural and family identities and destroying the vital fabric that has sustained our people with the pretentious intention of establishing uniformity of thought.

In Mary’s school we learn to walk the path that nourishes our hearts with the multicultural richness that dwells on the Continent. When we are able to listen to our inner heart which beats in us and protects us—like that of a smoldering fire under what appears to be ashes—we then get a sense of God and His transcendence, the sacredness of life, a respect for creation, the bonds of solidarity, the joy of the art of good living, the capacity of being happy, and to celebrate unconditionally (cf. Encuentro con el Comité Directivo del CELAM, Colombia, September 7, 2017).

And she sang.

Mary walks bearing the joy of someone who sings of the wonders that God has done in his lowly servant. As she passes, like a good mother, she rouses the son giving voice to so many who, for one reason or

Please continue to bring non-perishable food items.

Jesus was born during the night of the year when darkness is the longest. The Savior of the world comes for the people in dark places and brings them light. Through your gifts of time, treasure, and talent “Light” has shown, bringing real, lasting and deep joy to the hearts of the poor who live in dark places in our neighborhood.

We thank all those who contributed to making Thanksgiving and Christmas so much better for our neighbors. We thank our volunteers who staff the food pantry, those who made deliveries, and those who have brought food on a weekly basis. We thank the teachers and students at our schools who collected so much food, and we thank organizations such as Long Island Cares and Island Harvest for their continuing commitment. We thank the businesses like Stew Leonard who made major contributions for Thanksgiving and Christmas. They have all brought “Light” to many.

another, felt that they could not sing. She gives the word to John—who leaps in his mother’s womb—she gives the word to Elizabeth—who blesses her—she gives to elderly Simeon the fulfillment of the prophesy—she teaches the Word to gibber his first words.

In Mary’s school we learn that her life was marked not by protagonism but by the capacity to make others be the protagonists. She offers us courage, teaches us how to speak, and, above all, encourages us to live in the audacity of faith and hope. In this way, she manifests the transparent face of the Lord who shows His power invites participation, and calls us to be His living temple. This is exactly what He did with the lowly Juan Diego and with many others whom He removed from anonymity and gave them a voice. He made known their face and story, and made them protagonists of that story— the history of salvation. The Lord does not seek self-centered applause or worldly admiration. His glory is in making His children the protagonists of creation. With a motherly heart, Mary seeks to raise up and dignify all those who, for different reasons and circumstances, were immersed in abandonment and oblivion.

In Mary’s school we learn the protagonism that does not need to humiliate, mistreat, despise, or mock others in order to feel valuable

or important. We learn that we do not need to resort to physical or psychological violence in order to feel safe and protected. It is a protagonism that does not fear tenderness or signs of affection and which knows that its best face is service. In her school we learn authentic protagonism, to dignify all who have fallen, and to do so with the omnipotent power of divine love.

In Mary, the Lord silenced the temptation to give protagonism the power of intimidation or the power for the loudest to assert themselves on the basis of lies or manipulation. With Mary, the Lord watches over believers so that their hearts do not harden and that they may constantly know the renewed and renewing power of solidarity that makes them capable of hearing God’s pulse in the hearts of all men and women.

Mary, “teacher of the gospel”, walked and sang on our Continent and thus, the Guadalupana is not only remembered as indigenous, Spanish, Hispanic, or African-American. She is simply Latin American: Mother of a fertile and generous land in which everyone, in one way or another can find a leading role in the building of the Holy Temple of the Family of God.

Latin American son or daughter, brother or sister, sing and walk without fear, as your Mother did.

Page 8: UNITED THROUGH CHRIST WITH S V P P C

O n the last Sunday before Christmas, the Gospel turns our attention from the ministry of John the Baptist to the events that preceded his birth. The story of John the Baptist and his parents are reported only in Luke's

Gospel and establishes John's early connection to the Messiah. Today’s Gospel recalls Mary's actions: Mary goes to visit Elizabeth, her cousin, who is also with child. The major differences include the contrast between Zechariah’s unbelief and Mary’s belief!

When Elizabeth hears Mary’s greeting, she is filled with the Holy Spirit and recognizes the Messiah in Mary's womb. With joyful anticipation she sees the fulfillment of God's promise to give a Savior. Even John the Baptist, the unborn child in Elizabeth's womb, is said to recognize the presence of the Lord and leaps for joy!

Note that it is Elizabeth who is the one expressing honor at Mary’s visit. This would have been odd to early Christians who hear the Gospel – Elizabeth is an elderly woman in a culture that honors older people, so we would expect Mary to be the one to give her honor. However, the Holy Spirit helps reveal Jesus' identity and Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit and sings Mary's praise – “blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” (We sing these words of praise to Mary in the Hail Mary.)

The word "blessed" (makarios in Greek) literally means "happiness" and describes a kind of joy which is serene and unchanging (regardless of the circumstances of life!) This word also implies a blessing based on a right relationship with God and recalls Moses’ words to the Israelites—the blessing, in that case, was contingent on their obedience to God. Mary is being obedient, and her blessing, like her baby, grows out of that obedience. Elizabeth, moved by the Holy Spirit, is acknowledging the blessing that God has bestowed on Mary!

“Blessed is she who believed” - Mary’s belief is what brought about her blessing. Mary believed, in contrast to Zechariah, who did not believe and was struck mute. During her pregnancy, Elizabeth has been living with Zechariah, who because of his unbelief has been unable to speak. Now she receives Mary, who does believe and, if we were to continue to read the verses that follow, we would hear Mary respond to Elizabeth's greeting with her song of praise, the Magnificat. Both women recall and echo God's history of showing favor upon the people of Israel.

It is appropriate in this season of Advent that we consider the role of Mary in God's plan of salvation. Elizabeth describes Mary as the first disciple, as the one who believed that God's word to her would be fulfilled. Mary's faith enabled her to recognize the work of God in her people's history and in her own life. Her openness to God allowed God to work through her so that salvation might come to everyone. Because of this, Mary is a model and symbol of the Church. As we draw closer to the humble birth of Our Lord, let us be like Mary, and ponder ways to be open to what God has in store for us, and cooperate in God's plan for salvation. As we await Christmas, let us pray - Lord Jesus, fill me with your Holy Spirit and give me joy in seeking you more earnestly. Increase my faith in all your promises, my hope in the joy of heaven, and my love for You as my All.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock…” - Revelations 3:20

It is true. I stand at the door of your heart, day and night. Even when you are not listening, even when you doubt it could be Me, I am there. I await even the smallest sign of your response, even the least whispered invitation that will allow Me to enter.

And I want you to know that whenever you invite Me, I do come – always, without fail. Silent and unseen I come, but with infinite power and love, and bringing the many gifts of My Spirit. I come with My mercy, with My desire to forgive and heal you, and with a love for you beyond your comprehension – a love every bit as great as the love I have received from the Father ("As much as the Father has loved me, I have loved you…" (Jn. 15:10) I come - longing to console you and give you strength, to lift you up and bind all your wounds. I bring you My light, to dispel your darkness and all your doubts. I come with My power, that I might carry you and all your burdens; with My grace, to touch your heart and transform your life; and My peace I give to still your soul.

I know you through and through. I know everything about you. The very hairs of your head I have numbered. Nothing in your life is unimportant to Me. I have followed you through the years, and I have always loved you – even in your wanderings. I know every one of your problems. I know your needs and your worries. And yes, I know all your sins. But I tell you again that I love you – not for what you have or haven’t done – I love you for you, for the beauty and dignity My Father gave you by creating you in His own image. It is a dignity you have often forgotten, a beauty you have tarnished by sin. But I love you as you are, and I have shed My Blood to win you back. If you only ask Me with faith, My grace will touch all that needs changing in your life, and I will give you the strength to free yourself from sin and all its destructive power.

I know what is in your heart – I know your loneliness and all your hurts – the rejections, the judgments, the humiliations, I carried it all before you. And I carried it all for you, so you might share My strength and victory. I know especially your need for love – how you are thirsting to be loved and cherished. But how often have you thirsted in vain, by seeking that love selfishly, striving to fill the emptiness inside you with passing pleasures – with the even greater emptiness of sin. Do you thirst for love? "Come to Me all you who thirst…" (Jn. 7: 37). I will satisfy you and fill you. Do you thirst to be cherished? I cherish you more than you can imagine – to the point of dying on a cross for you.

I Thirst for You. Yes, that is the only way to even begin to describe My love for you. I THIRST FOR YOU. I thirst to love you and to be loved by you – that is how precious you are to Me. I THIRST FOR YOU. Come to Me, and I will fill your heart and heal your wounds. I will make you a new creation, and give you peace, even in all your trials I THIRST FOR YOU. You must never doubt My mercy, My acceptance of you, My desire to forgive, My longing to bless you and live My life in you. I THIRST FOR YOU. If you feel unimportant in the eyes of the world, that matters not at all. For Me, there is no one any more important in the entire world than you. I THIRST FOR YOU. Open to Me, come to Me, thirst for Me, give me your life – and I will prove to you how important you are to My Heart.

Don’t you realize that My Father already has a perfect plan to transform your life, beginning from this moment? Trust in Me. Ask Me every day to enter and take charge of your life. – and I will. I promise you before My Father in heaven that I will work miracles in your life. Why would I do this? Because I THIRST FOR YOU. All I ask of you is that you entrust yourself to Me completely. I will do all the rest.

Even now I behold the place My Father has prepared for you in My Kingdom. Remember that you are a pilgrim in this life, on a journey home. Sin can never satisfy you, or bring the peace you seek. All that you have sought outside of Me has only left you more empty, so do not cling to the things of this life. Above all, do not run from Me when you fall. Come to Me without delay. When you give Me your sins, you give Me the joy of being your Savior. There is nothing I cannot forgive and heal; so come now, and unburden your soul.

No matter how far you may wander, no matter how often you forget Me, no matter how many crosses you may bear in this life; there

Page 11: UNITED THROUGH CHRIST WITH S V P P C

is one thing I want you to always remember, one thing that will never change. I THIRST FOR YOU – just as you are. You don’t need to change to believe in My love, for it will be your belief in My love that will change you. You forget Me, and yet I am seeking you every moment of the day – standing at the door of your heart and knocking. Do you find this hard to believe? Then look at the cross, look at My Heart that was pierced for you. Have you not understood My cross? Then listen again to the words I spoke there – for they tell you clearly why I endured all this for you: "I THIRST…"(Jn 19: 28). Yes, I thirst for you – as the rest of the psalm verse I was praying says of Me: "I looked for love, and I found none…" (Ps. 69: 20). All your life I have been looking for your love – I have never stopped seeking to love you and be loved by you. You have tried many other things in your search for happiness; why not try opening your heart to Me, right now, more than you ever have before.

Whenever you do open the door of your heart, whenever you come close enough, you will hear Me say to you again and again, not in mere human words but in spirit. "No matter what you have done, I love you for your own sake. Come to Me with your misery and your sins, with your troubles and needs, and with all your longing to be loved. I stand at the door of your heart and knock.

Open to Me, for I THIRST FOR YOU…"

"Jesus is God, therefore His love, His Thirst, is infinite. He the creator of the universe, asked for the love of His creatures.

He thirsts for our love… These words: ‘I Thirst’ –

Do they echo in our souls?” St. Teresa of Calcutta

FOR THE CHRISTMAS SEASON

Page 13: UNITED THROUGH CHRIST WITH S V P P C

Most Reverend John O. Barres Bishop of Rockville Center

Sincerely in Christ,

To the People of God of the Diocese of Rockville Centre: Merry Christmas to you and your families! Christmas is a powerful time of unity and communion for our families, and every Christmas is a time for our families to open even more deeply to the healing and transforming power of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of the Holy Family. The Holy Family not only transformed but revolutionized the world and history through humility, poverty, adoration, and trust in the plan of God, and a complete dedication to the Glory of God. Mary’s silent adoration and awe teaches us to see through everyday human events and appearances to the presence of Christ in every situation. Joseph teaches us rock solid trust and bold docility in the shifting terrain and unexpected events of daily life. The shepherds teach us simplicity, humility, and reverent adoration. The Infant Prince of Peace teaches us that God’s Mercy is the beating heart of the Gospel and the beating heart of the Crèche scene. Mercy is the Foundation of the Church’s mission to the world. We approach the Prince of Peace this Christmas for special gifts of peace in our families, special gifts of peace for our Church and special gifts of peace for the World. In the Mystery of the Nativity, we marvel and give Glory to God with the Shepherds and the Wise Men. We realize in the image of a poor, homeless family and the image of a poor, vulnerable baby that God’s logic in the Incarnation overturns and confounds the narrow logic of human power and calculation. “Families transform the world and history.” The Holy Family continues to transform our marriages and our families—right in our daily experiences of the joys, crosses, crises, and the unresolved issues of every marriage and every family in a fallen world. In the midst of the weaknesses and failures of daily family life, we remember the Glory of God that radiates from the manger lifting our families, despite their daily imperfections, to transform the world and history through faith, holiness, and a missionary spirit. When we pray and meditate on the Crèche at Christmas, we experience a spiritual rebirth and fresh insights into our daily family routine and our daily family spiritual, emotional, and relational patterns. We allow the ruts of sin and selfishness in our families to be purified with daily patterns of prayer, grace, and conversion. We remember that personal conversion sends ripple effects throughout a family. The Crèche leads us to a deep experience of Mercy and Forgiveness in our families. And we remember that the confessionals in our churches are “Doors of Mercy” and forgiveness for our families. I invite you to take advantage of the gift of reconciliation by participating in the confessions offered at your parish during this holy season. During this Christmas season, I want to thank you and your families for transforming the world and history with Christ’s love.

Many Gather in His Name — United in PRAYER Through Our Prayer, Devotion & Scripture Study Ministry!

Faithful are united here in prayer nearly every day throughout the year, not just at Mass but on weekdays and weekends as well, spending time with Jesus in silent prayer in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and in guided prayer through a variety of prayer groups and special devotional groups. They are sharing their faith with scripture study and in our “In Home Prayer Programs.” Many individuals, families and visitors from Franklin Square, Elmont, Garden City South, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties and beyond come to pray in our Adoration Chapel, Holy Family Prayer Room, Church, and Sienna Center. With over a dozen different ways to praise, our parishioners and guests participate in a variety of groups dedicated to devotions, prayer, and bible study that meet during the day and at night in both our parishes throughout the year as part of this ministry. All are Welcome to join!

The statue is brought to the home and a family prays the Rosary and other prayers together for the week. Our Lady has visited 49 homes this past year.

Cup of Prayer travels from family home to family home where family members and individuals pray for much needed vocations to the priesthood, the intentions of priests and own family intentions for the week. The Cup was in 47 family homes this last year.

Statue of Our Lady of Sorrows has just begun travels in recent months visiting homes in our Parish Family and hosted by the Legion of Mary. If you are interested in participating in any Prayer Group or In Home Program, contact the SCS Parish Office for additional information. Take home a bulletin or read on line to know more!

Liturgical Ministry — Serving God in Worship & Sacramental Prep Some are called to serve in ministry at Mass during week, weekends, Funeral Masses and Services, and Prayer Services in a variety of different ways. While we have five areas of ministry, those serving in this ministry are probably most familiar to us all. Our priests and deacons are very present at Mass; but we also see the Altar Servers, Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, and Ushers. Members of music ministry include our Cantors, Choir Members and Musicians. Behind the scenes our altar, sanctuary and surrounding environment is set

up and taken care of by Sacristans. Our Consolation Ministers serve at Funerals; and our Adoration Ministers, are guardians of the Blessed Sacrament as Regular Adorers. Others serving in this ministry prepare hundreds of children and adults for the Sacraments of Baptism, Holy Eucharist, Reconciliation/Penance, Confirmation and Mar-riage as Catechists, Aides, Faith Formation Volunteers, RCIA Facilitators, and Pre-Cana Couples. There are over 300 dedicated individuals that make an annual commitment to serve Our Lord through the Liturgical Ministry and give their TIME regularly on a weekly basis throughout the year!

Suppor ng the Good Works of Ministry

depends on the sacrifice and generosity of many to be able to meet parish needs and continue the many good works of ministry offered through our parish and Catholic Church. We are grateful to all who give and share not only their time and talent in meeting the daily needs of our parish but also those who gift their TREASURE (resources) to ensure good works of ministry continue in the parish. It costs a weekly average of $35,000 to run our parish and we appreciate your support.

Page 15: UNITED THROUGH CHRIST WITH S V P P C

We are all stewards of the Church as children of God called by our Baptism to be disciples of Jesus. As disciples and good stewards we give our TIME, share our TALENTS, and gift our TREASURE of resources. We SACRIFICE for one another, united through prayer, raising our voices together in worship of Our Lord at Mass weekly and living our faith daily. As followers of Jesus we are reminded of His sacrifice for us at Mass and through scripture.

Good stewards are responsible for managing resources (human and financial) for the good of the whole in all we do especially related to our faith. Living stewardship means loving God, caring for God’s people and His creations, including earth and the environment. Living Stewardship is far beyond funding, it is a way of life.

LIVING STEWARDSHIP IS A WAY OF LIFE!

We consider a family a group of people, adults and children, that reside in the same household, share meals and do things together. All are individuals that are united in heart through their t ime together, memories and family activities.

The Parish Family of Saint Catherine of Sienna consists of adults and children that come together weekly in the same sacred space to the Table of the Lord at Mass; they share nourishment of the soul through the Holy Eucharist; they are united in spirit, prayer, and heart, and participate in many of our spiritual and social activities throughout the year. Many participate from different age groups, interests, both weekly

and seasonally.

Our Parish Family consists of households with single people, married couples, parents and children, multi-generational families who are residents not only of Franklin Square but

also surrounding communities who have chosen to belong to our Church and become registered members. Not registered? If you wish to register, please contact the Parish Office.

SCS Safety & Security Awareness Program

As many know, our Safety & Security Task Group began its work in January 2018 and continues to move forward with Action Plans in an effort to provide a safe and secure environment for all to worship, pray, gather, meet and socialize in the many spiritual and social activities and events of our parish. Over

the last months, there have been new policies and improved procedures implemented with updated security controls and security equipment installed including new locks and alarms...and much more!

In today’s world we must be diligent in our effort to have security and safety measures in place throughout the parish complex. In years past our Office Staff and Camp Sienna Staff were issued SCS ID Badges so children could identify them. The use of ID Badges is common in our local schools and many offices now. To strengthen our efforts and for all our adults, children, parishioners, and guests to be able to more easily identify who is who, we too will issue SCS ID Badges. As of this month you will see not only our Priests, Deacons, Parish Ministry Leaders, Office and Maintenance Staff wear official badges but also our Sacristans and Faith Formation Volunteers.

We are able to do this work due to the generosity of a major benefactor and other donations secured this year. There will be more coming in 2019 with additional safety and security equipment upgrades and safety training. We all must work together being the eyes and ears of the parish to help keep our parish safe and secure.
