PEACE SERVICE FEEDBACK

Rev. Manas received the following feedback from some of the faith leaders and participants who were at the Peace Service at Leigh Memorial on Monday 21 September. He has asked us to share them with you – LM leaders’ team.

Thank you for the wonderful and inspiring peace prayer service. It was the first of a kind I was witnessing and I was so delighted to see so many cultures and religions getting together for promoting a common purpose. Thank you once again for organising this wonderful event year after year and creating this space of love and unity. Hope to see you again next year. (Sobbuh Hemmati, Bahai)

Thank you and congratulations for successful program. Regards, Mahesh (Jain Dance group with five girls)

It is my deep pleasure to be there with you fine faithful people. May haii rabai bless you all. Regards, Azhar Edan (Mandaean)

It was such a pleasure & privilege to participate in your very moving service today! The prayers, songs and dances were inspiring as was the lighting of the candles, releasing the doves and of course the gourmet afternoon tea! We look forward to seeing them again on 21/09/16! (Circular Keys Chorus)

Thank you for another wonderful event this afternoon on behalf of all awake and caring souls, longing for more peace and understanding in our community, nearby and far away. Thank you for setting an example in the heart of Parramatta, spreading seeds and sparks that can be multiplied and spread to new places in the Uniting Church, many other places of worship and society at large, right now. With appreciation, Maria and Richard (Sydney Alliance)

I take it as an honour to be invited to offer a prayer for peace on behalf of the Jewish Community. And I do enjoy my encounters/conversations with your congregants and others who were invited today. It was a great success. The day set a good tone and felt the buzz afterwards as we shared food and conversation. I look forward to sharing with you again on 21st September 2016. Warmly, Kati (Jewish)

We enjoyed ourselves and the opportunity to play a part. I am very honoured that you invited me to give the Occasional Address. (Zoroastrian) Thanks for inviting me. You went to a great length to make the event spiritually entertaining. Mina (Sikh) Peace always! Manas

LEIGH MEMORIAL TOWER INSPECTION: PHOTOS (Part 2)

Having shown a few photos last week depicting the 'boom lift'/ cherry picker taking building inspectors to the top of the Leigh Memorial Tower, included in this week's newsletter are some photos from the top! These include fascinating 'birdseye' views of Macquarie Street and Parramatta's construction sites/ rapidly changing skyline, plus close-ups of the tower top itself, complete with our ageing gargoyles. Results of the inspection have indicated leaks in the copper roof of the tower, which was soldered in place when the spire was removed due to public safety concerns in 1921. Although the stonework and wooden louvres on the tower are also showing signs of age and wear, inspectors of the tower and building in general have described it as a "beautiful" example of late Victorian church architecture. The LM congregation property team will continue to provide updates re proposed strategies to deal with building's maintenance and photos taken during the inspection process will be stored in the Leigh Memorial archives - the PM Heritage Committee.

Three years ago volunteers from West Epping Uniting Church painted this wall white and last week Year 12 students from Tara added the mural at Thelma Brown Cottage.

Reflecting On Being A “CALD” Church. 1 Kings 19:1-8; Acts 10:34, 37-43; Luke 24:14-32.

Today I have taken leave of the lectionary. We should be looking at Mark 10:1-16. What I want to do this Communion Sunday is a little different. I would like us to reflect on our cultural diversity. It seems to me that this is a very appropriate things to do on a Communion Sunday: we come together in the breaking of bread and sharing of wine – and, of course, eating and drinking at a common table is often associated with hospitality. We only need to look around our neighbourhoods in Parramatta and Westmead to see that our society is full of people from different parts of the world. We can hear it in the languages which are spoken, the clothes we wear, and, of course, there are all the different kinds of food we eat. Once upon a time Australia, Parramatta and Westmead, and our churches were not like that. It has been said that the changes made to the immigration policy in 1973 has led to the “re-invention of Australia”. (By way of an aside, for all those cooks, the minister of Collins Street Baptist Church in Melbourne, Simon Carey Holt used to be a chef and has written a book celebrating cultural diversity and faith under the title of Eating Heaven: Spirituality at the Table. At the end of each chapter is a recipe!).

Back in 1977 when the Uniting Church was formed it was still kind of assumed that people who came from an Asian or Pacific background were more likely to live over “there”. The new church was a coming together of three distinct church cultures – Presbyterian, Congregational and Methodist. What was not foreseen at that time was how culturally mixed our suburbs and churches would become. There have been 3 major statements the Assembly has made about our cultural and ethnic makeup since that time. The first declared that “we are a multicultural church”. That declaration was made in 1985; it was the first time that the church made explicit reference to the migrant cultures and a migrant-ethnic ministry. Some proposals were put into place which were designed to help us become more familiar with one another’s ways of ministry, worship and needs. This declaration was the first time the church included a reference to Aboriginal / indigenous people in a formal statement. The second statement was made in 2006: it was headed up “A Church For All God’s People”. Reading it now it seems as if this 2006 statement was a little subdued: it was inviting us to become “a true multicultural church”.

Page 13: Uniting Church Our in News Australia - Parramatta Mission€¦ · Back in 1977 when the Uniting Church was formed it was still kind of assumed that people who came from an Asian or

The underlying assumption was that we still had a long way to go in order to be the body of Christ which is made up of many people from many different cultures speaking many different languages. This 2006 statement said we should seek to “live cross-culturally” in order to become “a true multicultural church”. The third declaration made by the Assembly came in 2012: “One Body, Many Members -Living Life and Faith Cross-culturally”. By now the ideal of being a “true” multicultural church would take place “in the fulfilled reign of God”.

In the life of our congregations, in the life of the Mission, we are extraordinarily well placed to live out that kind of calling. So often relationships across cultures do not always flourish: it is said the greatest obstacle can be “fear” – I don’t know the language, I don’t know what is expected of me, I am not sure what to do or how to conduct myself etc. From the outset the church was made up of more than one culture. Think of the Pentecost story, for instance. Here in Parramatta, Westmead, western Sydney were are surrounded by so much cultural diversity. It might be worthwhile for us to pause for a moment and reflect upon some of the claims the Uniting Church has made in order to serve our being made up of different cultures.

(It is now said that we are a CALD church, meaning “ a culturally and linguistically diverse church”). Those 3 statements are based on the belief that:

*The cultural diversity / unity of the church is a gift of God. *That gift is a consequence of Jesus having “made peace between people of every race, culture and class”. * The “unity” which is to be found in a “culturally diverse church” is a foretaste of the reconciliation of all things in Christ. * The church is a “sign of and witness to the kingdom of God”. * The “multicultural Uniting Church” seeks to be “a sign of hope” to the surrounding society.

Clive Pearson.

WESTMEAD CONGREGATION

Our new flags are certainly eye catching. We used them on Tuesday on a brilliant spring day and here is a photo of a few of the congregation out on the verandah at Time Out Café.

The countdown clock is down to 2 days for our bus trip on October 6th and we will be travelling to go on the Hawkesbury Riverboat Postman. We are now booked in and are very excited. Don’t forget that we need to be at Westmead Car Park by 8.15 so we can leave promptly. We are also very grateful for our wonderful driver Parriss, who is driving us in the bus. NB As a number of us are away on this day on the bus trip, and others are away on holidays so we will cancel TOC for the Tuesday only.

The residents and staff of Mayflower nursing home were very grateful for their new crocheted and knitted blankets. A special service for the blessing of the blankets will happen on the 8th October.

We are starting to collect things for our Munch’n’Brunch (mini- fete) on 7th November. Please book the date and we look forward to providing food, fun and a good morning out!

And speaking of collecting things we are also taking donations of quality women’s clothing. Please bring all donations to the Office. Christine’s Office is looking a little like a store room but we have plenty of storage upstairs- so don’t hold back!

CHANGE OF TIME: Please note the cancellation of the opening of the backyard for Wesley Apartments. Unfortunately the work will not be completed in time. We look forward to the time when we can get together to celebrate the amazing work which has been done. The ‘health challenge’ affects so many of us but especially our musicians at present. Our prayers are with Don as he undergoes further treatment. And we are also very aware of Soo Ling’s father back in Malaysia. We pray for Soo Ling and her mother as they are in Malaysia as a family. This leaves Flora, Bruce and Rev Christine as our musicians- so we are very glad we have technology to assist us with music. People matters: Robyn H has also been facing some really difficult medical issues. She

and Greg really need extra prayers at this time, especially while they wait for the results of different tests and as she recovers from surgery on Tuesday.

We have many people who are not well or have particular medical

conditions and our prayers are with each of them. Please remember to pray each day around 9.00 am if you can for God’s Spirit to bring more opportunities for offering hospitality, sharing faith and offering care and compassion in the name of Christ. Especially pray for more able-bodied people to come and engage in the many tasks of the congregation in mission and ministry
