ASTRONOMY:
Science that studies the celestial bodies.
BILL OF EXCHANGE:
Document in which a person promised to pay another person a sum of money on a specific date.
CANVAS:
Material for painting on, normally made of cotton or linen.
CARAVEL:
Fast, llight ship with square and triangular sails that can carry up to 60 tones.
CARTOGRAPHY:
Science of the study and drawing of maps.
COUNTER-REFORMATION:
Internal reform of the Catholic Church to combat the rise of Protestantism.
DIPLOMACY:
Work of people responsible for the international relations of a country or territory.
FRESCO:
Technique in which colours are dissolved in water and applied to a wet plaster wall.
HIDALGO:
Member of the Spanish lower nobility. Some were wealthy but others lived in poverty.
HUMANISM:
Intellectual movement that admired the Classical Age, considered human beings to be centre of the universe and used reason to explain reality.
INQUISITION:
Ecclesiastical tribunal, that persecuted false converts (people who onverted to Christianity but continued to practise their old religion).
MADONNA:
Italian word used to describe representations of the Virgin and Child.
MYTHOLOGICAL:
Of stories about the gods and heroes of the ancient world.
OIL PAINTING:
Technique in which colours are diluted in oil.
PAPAL STATES:
Territory under the political authority of the pope.
REFORMATION:
Religious movement begun by Martin Luther in the 16th century as a result of corruption in the Church. It led to the split of the Church into Protestantism and Catholicism.
RENAISSANCE:
15th and 16th century artistic style inspired by the classical art of Ancient Greece and Rome.
TEMPERA:
Tecnique in which colours are diluited in glue or egg yolk.
THEOCENTRISM:
Philosophical concept that considers God to be the central focus of all things.
TRIBUTE:
Tax.
