Mrs. Corbett ACCEL. ALGEBRA 2 2016-2017 Course Description: This is a complete high school algebra 2 course that satisfies the State of Minnesota’s mathematics requirement for high school graduation and prepares students to continue their study of math in pre- calculus. The IB learner profile is used as a guide in developing and implementing the curriculum. Being a mathematics course, an emphasis is placed on developing inquirers and thinkers while trying to have students reflect upon what they have learned. Methodology: In MYP, teachers work collaboratively to develop a variety of techniques, focusing on approaches to learning, especially critical thinking and reflection. Students take responsibility for their learning through individual and group work, addressing unit and guiding questions, expanding on their critical thinking skills/problem solving skills, and building on their self-advocacy. Units of Study: I. Foundations for Functions II. Linear Functions III. Linear Systems IV. Quadratic Functions V. Polynomial Functions VI. Exponential and Logarithmic Functions VII. Rational and Radical Functions VIII. Properties and Attributes of Functions IX. Probability and Statistics X. Sequences and Series XI. Trigonometric Graphs and Identities Supplies for Class: 1. Pencil/Pen 4. Graphing Calculator (ex. TI-84) 2. 3-subject notebook or 3-ring binder 5. Holt Algebra 2 book/CD-ROM 3. Pocket Folder or 3-ring binder 6. ACCEL. ALGEBRA 2 2016-2017

Course Description: This is a complete high school algebra 2 course that satisfies the State of Minnesota’s mathematics requirement for high school graduation and prepares students to continue their study of math in pre-calculus.

Trigonometric Graphs and Identities

Supplies for Class:

1. Pencil/Pen 4. Graphing Calculator (ex. TI-84) 2. 3-subject notebook or 3-ring binder 5. Holt Algebra 2 book/CD-ROM 3. Pocket Folder or 3-ring binder 6. SPPS iPad

*If you are unable to purchase a graphing calculator and qualify for free/reduced lunch can check one out from the library at a replacement cost of $120.

Teacher Information: [email protected] 651.744.3860 http://highlandsr.spps.org/Page/1814

Expectations: Students will be expected to adhere to the following classroom principles:

1. Respectful – I will demonstrate respect for myself, others, school, and the community

2. Responsible – I will be a responsible member of my school community

3. Safe – I will help create a school environment where every student feels safe

Everyday: - Show respect at all times for yourself,

classmates, and teachers - Participate – take notes, ask questions, and

participate in discussions - Be prepared and on time - Be present and engaged with your class (no cell

phones should ever be out) - Share your thoughts/ideas. We want to

know what you tried. YOU MATTER!

Test Days: • Show respect for yourself, classmates, and teachers • Study guides will be available in the form of unit organizers and practice tests • Stay silent until all tests are turned in • Try your best and be willing to correct mistakes!

Math Review: ! Trust the process – you will

become a better mathematician!

! Be reflective ! Use math vocabulary

Need Help: Please ask for help, don’t stay lost. Use all your resources! Holt tutorial videos, textbook, notes, upper classmen, and friends.

Assessment Methods: I will regularly use both formative and summative assessments to gauge and guide student success. Formative assessments will be routine, informative and on going. Among other strategies, I may choose to use exit cards, math review, visual checks for understanding (thumbs up, note cards, etc.), quick writes, discussion, or practice problems. Quizzes within a unit might also be used to evaluate student progress and adjust instruction. Summative assessments will commonly take the form of chapter tests, unit tests, and/or group or individual projects. Cumulative final exams may also be given. Class work/Assignments: Assignments will be given daily, and will be checked for completion and correctness in various manners. Additionally, students are expected to be active participants in their learning. Mathematics may be challenging, and one topic does build upon another. Therefore, daily participation is a must, and you will struggle if you get behind in your course work. Skills you learn in one unit are going to be crucial to your success in future units. If absent, it is the student’s responsibility to ask me for missed assignments! Math Review: When students arrive to class each day they will have 2-3 math review problems to work on. Math review is used to fill in the “gaps” that students may have. They emphasize error analysis, vocabulary, conceptual understanding, and reflection.

Tutoring:

I am available for help most days before school (7:00 am) or approximately 3 days a week after school (until 3:00 pm), by appointment. I can be most easily reached via e-mail at [email protected]. You can also try my phone line at 651.744.3860. However, I am only the first resource to assist you in your education. You will find that your textbook, online resources, classmates, and other resources will be very valuable. I will do everything in my power to help you succeed… all I ask is that you do the same!

Grading Scale and Percentages (According to HPSH Grading Policy)

A = 93.0 – 100.0 A- = 90.0 – 92.99 B+ = 87.0 – 89.99 B = 83.0 - 86.99 B- = 80.0 - 82.99 C+ = 77.0 – 79.99 C = 73.0 – 76.99 C- = 70.0 - 72.99 D+ = 67.0 – 69.99 D = 63.0 – 66.99 D- = 60.0 – 62.99 N = 00.0 - 59.99

Formative: 30% Summative: 70%
