Greetings from the East...

Hello Brethren and Ladies, Summer is almost over and it is time

for me to start wrapping up all the ideas

and goals that I had proposed for this year. Once again I want to thank all of

my Officers, Past Masters and Lodge

Members for all the support they give me.

We initiated two new Entered Ap

prentice Masons on July 24th and after coaching them during the month of

August they are already prepared to be

passed to the degree of Fellowcraft. It has been a while since I have coached,

but once again I have been reminded of

that quote, “to teach is to be taught twice.”

I want to thank the brothers that

spoke on their experience with Masonry at our Stated Meeting Dinner in August.

What better way for potential new can

didates to learn about Freemasonry than

to hear it directly from the mouths of

several of our distinguished members. I

have heard that two of the visitors joining us that night plan on submitting a

Petition for Degrees at our Lodge. Well done Brothers.

Unity Lodge donated the use of our

building to the young men of Valley Hills DeMolay on Saturday, August

24th. They held their Installation of

Officers in our Lodge Room and then following it they had refreshments and a

dance in the dining room…DJ, lights

and all. I supervised them all day and I cannot begin to tell what a pleasure it

was to see a young group, so well be

haved and so full of energy take over our lodge. It was a real pleasure to know

that we were helping them out, but an

even greater pleasure to spend time getting to know them, seeing and feel

ing all of their energy and witnessing a

well orchestrated, professional, moving and emotional Installation of young men

devoted to DeMolay. This was my first

exposure to their Chapter and I want to thank the brethren for the support we

were able to give this youth order.

I would like to congratulate Worshipful John Gowen, PM for receiving

Unity Lodge’s Mason of the Year

Award at the Scottish Rite on August 31st. The award was presented by Most

Worshipful John Lowe and it was great

to see so many members of Unity Lodge show their support and attend the event.

I would also like to congratulate Wor

shipful Don Taylor, PM for being selected as Grand Tiler for the Grand

Lodge of California for 2014. His instal

lation will be held on October 6th in the Grand Lodge Auditorium.

We will be holding a 1st Degree at

6:30pm on September 9th for Mr. Charles Sawyer so please come out and

show your support for him and our

Lodge as we can always use more side liners and it will give you an opportuni

ty to join in the fellowship that we hold

so dear to our hearts. I was told by a Past Master that this year it is my job to

bring this Lodge together, well that’s a

tough one to tackle with a bunch of stubborn old farts (myself included), but

I can say that I have worked hard at it

by showing up to events, spending time

and getting to know our brothers, wives

and widows, and just being myself. So I

am asking those brothers that have been sitting at home during our events to start

coming out, participat swallow your pride and enjoy the “gloriousness of

when brothers come together”. We all

know our time here is limited, so let’s not deny ourselves of seeing our family

one more time.

We will be holding our annual George Steven’s Picnic at Admiral

Baker Field on Saturday, September 21st

from 11am until 4pm at Pavilion #15 so come out and join us for some ribeye

steaks (my treat), chicken, hamburgers,

hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, chips, sodas and a selection of deserts.

Our grill masters Senior Warden Jahmal

Neff and Senior Deacon Enrique Castelo will be flipping some of the best

barbecue you have ever tasted. Also,

please remind your friends in The Daughters of the Nile, Eastern Star,

Amaranth and White Shrine that they

too are also invited to join us at this event. The cost is free and there will be

plenty or games and prizes to enhance

the fun. Unity Lodge will be participating in

this year’s Adams Avenue Street Fair,

along with the Al Bahr Shrine Clowns and Teddy Bear making machine, The

Lemon Grove Rainbow Girls, Job’s

Daughters Bethel #40, and Valley Hills DeMolay. We have eliminated the Beer

Garden in our parking lot and there will

be several kids rides in place of it. The youth groups will be serving Cotton

Candy, Popcorn, and Snow Cones with

supplies bought by Unity Lodge and the youth groups keeping all proceeds from

the sales of their snacks. Our Child ID

Booth will be up and literature on Freemasonry and the Youth Groups will be

available. I encourage you all to come

out, bring a friend and support us as this is one of our largest public events of the

year. We are fortunate enough to bring

all three youth groups together with our lodge and Shriners in one big Masonic

Event.

Our 164th Annual Communication will be held on October 4th-6th. The

Pillars and a Past Master will cast their

votes on legislation proposed to change

the California Masonic Code. Some

highlights of the legislation involve:

Changes/Transfer of Life Membership Funds, Pillars being responsible for

Master’s Lectures of and below their station, Privacy of Members’ infor

mation in public mailings, use of Cipher

by Officer’s Coach during ritual, presenting ID before depositing ballots at

Grand Lodge, requiring Pledge of Alle

giance at meetings, allowing EAs and FCs to participate in Funeral Services,

create a 25 year Award, Payment plan

for lifetime memberships, new ages/multiples for calculating lifetime mem

bership amount, Secretary emailing

minutes of lodge to avoid having to read them at meetings, Funeral Expenses,

Require the Treasurer-elect and Secre

tary-elect to be proficient in the Candidate’s Lecture of MM degree.

I look forward to seeing you all at

our upcoming functions and for the last time this year, due to the heat, I am once

again authorizing HAWAIIAN

SHIRTS/ATTIRE FOR SEPTEMBER’S STATED MEETING.

Brethren and families; Traditionally August is

the month we typically go dark. It gives the members of Unity lodge an oppor-tunity to schedule and take vacations. Ritual practices are not the rou-tine, but the exception in August and even though some still follow this tradi-tion, it has become less and less significant. Peo-ple and their families take vacations when it best fits their lifestyle, work re-quirements, or even their kid’s schedules. This was evident by my trip to Ja-pan in July. Japan is truly a country of heritage, tradition and honor. Even though I did not spend a lot of time in the history aspect of Japan during this trip I did have an op-portunity to visit the Ki-

yomizu Kannon-do Temple in Ueno park on one of my excursions to one of Tokyo’s three Hard Rock Cafes. As humongous and modern as Tokyo is, the Japanese still managed to maintain many beautiful green areas in the form of parks throughout the city and this was no exception. The grounds of the park were very well kept and clean and most parks have some sort of shrine or temple included within their boundaries, like Ueno Park. An interesting tradition I experienced was the prayer walls which can be found out-side the temples of Japan. Here visitors write out their prayer wishes and hang them on the wall to be answered. With 99% of them being written in Kanji, it resembled art

notified as more infor-mation is provided. Thank you to Worshipful Hal Scott and our architect Worship-ful David Terry, who have been working hard to expe-dite the planning and ap-proval pieces of the remod-el.

During October 4th – 6th Worshipful Glunt, Brother Bumgarner and I will attend The Grand Lodge of Califor-nia Free & Accepted Ma-sons 164th Annual Commu-nication to cast our votes for this year’s resolutions. Our Brother Worshipful Don Taylor will be there as well as Grand Tiler of California Free &Accepted Masons.

Greetings Unity,

I hope you have enjoyed your summer and had a chance to get out and have some fun in the nice weath-er. Thank you Worshipful James and Worshipful Ste-ve for a month off. Now it’s time to get back to work. Congratulations to our new-est Entered Apprentice Ma-sons: Aaron Cathcart, and Gilberto Sabina. Welcome Brethren! We are looking forward to your progression in Masonry.

Next year’s calendar has been completed and sub-mitted to the building man-

ager. Since joining the fraternity, there has always been brothers available to support my development as a Mason and help me along my journey as a lodge of-ficer, so in this instance I would like to thank Wor-shipful Terry Allison for his help with putting together next year’s calendar. The incoming Wardens and I will meet later this month to finalize our programs for the year as well. At this point we have no specific dates for our planned re-model, but it is possible that we may not always have full access to the building. Everyone will be

If anyone would like this year’s proposed resolutions they are available on the Masons of California Web-site or you can request them through the pillars.

I hope to see you all at our picnic at the end of this month. There will be good food and great company.

Installation of 2014 offic-ers will be Sunday Decem-ber 15th.

more than just the random cluttering of notes it actu-ally was.

My family knows all too well of my collection of beer glasses from various Hard Rock Cafes through-out the world and I was ecstatic that I had three within striking distance on this trip. I was lucky enough to visit and have a beer in the Uyeno-Eki and Roppongi Hard Rock Cafes in Tokyo as well as the one in Yokohoma. This brings my count to 34 Hard Rock Cafes visited with 14 of them being outside the USA.

I also had the oppor-tunity to take in a Japa-nese Professional base-ball game, which was also right up my alley. I went to Jingu Stadium, home of the Tokyo Yakult Swal-lows who took on the

Hanshin Tigers. Each team had about 3 to 5 Americans on their ros-ters so I recognized a few of them. The Tigers showed no mercy to the lowly Swallows beating them 10-0 behind a grand slam by the Ti-gers Japanese catcher in the 7th inning. Every-one loves fireworks and in the USA the firework festivities are after the game. In Japan, they stop the game after 5 ½ innings and the fire-works show begins. Once it’s over the game resumes, odd? Perhaps not as odd as cheer-leaders at a baseball game? Yes, they had cheerleaders and the girls would come out every inning just before the home team would

bat. Cheering? The fans never shut up either, well, ok they did take took turns, but the stadium was never quiet. The main fan cheering sections were in the left field bleachers for the visitors and right field for the home team. They had drums, trumpets, flags and song leaders. They did take turns as it is considered in bad taste to cheer when your team was in the field, you only cheered when your team was up to bat. My trip to Japan wasn’t a long trip but it was to a part of the world where I had not been before.

How about that dinner we had on August 14? I was trying to keep it simple thinking we would have a

(Continued from page 2) smaller than usual crowd. Well I was wrong on the crowd as I counted 47 and I heard no nega-tive comments about the food ei-ther. We all loved the fruit, bru-schetta, lasagna, spaghetti and tiramisu. Our meeting in Sept, fall-ing on the 11th and Sept. being constitution month I thought it would be good to eat like they did in the 18th century. Wow, the food all looked and sounded terrible. I guess I am glad to live n the 21st century and I would be a skinny boy if I lived in the 1700s. So, I know it’s a stretch (relating to America’s history) but we are go-ing Cajun for Sept 11th. Don’t forget about the end of the sum-mer Unity lodge picnic either, that’s coming up 10 days after our meet-

ing on the 21st. Everyone loved go-ing to Admiral Baker Field so the Master decided, let’s do it again. Same place too, right next to the pool and the parking lot in pavilion #15. We will run from 11am to 3pm and it should be fun for all. Don’t forget to come out to the Ad-ams Ave. Street Fair on the week-end of Sept 28/29. We plan on having the Child ID booth, Al Bahr Shrine Clowns, Al Bahr Shrine Sa-maritans Teddy Bears and Masonic youth groups selling snow cones, cotton candy and popcorn along with some interesting kid ride at-tractions.

Until next month Steve Bumgarner
