PROJECT TITLE : UNIVERSAL DRUM HANDLER
INTRODUCTION
DRUM HANDLERs
Only thoroughly trained and competent persons are permitted to operate DRUM
HANDLERs. Operators should know what they are lifting and what it weighs. The rated
capacity of mobile DRUM HANDLERs varies with the length of the boom and the boom
radius. When a DRUM HANDLER has a telescoping boom, a load may be safe to lift at a
short boom length and/or a short boom radius, but may overload the DRUM HANDLER
when the boom is extended and the radius increases.
All movable DRUM HANDLERs must be equipped with a boom angle indicator; those
DRUM HANDLERs with telescoping booms must be equipped with some means to
determine the boom length, unless the load rating is independent of the boom length. Load
rating charts must be posted in the cab of cab-operated DRUM HANDLERs. All mobile
DRUM HANDLERs do not have uniform capacities for the same boom length and radius
in all directions around the chassis of the vehicle.
Always check the DRUM HANDLER's load chart to ensure that the DRUM HANDLER is
not going to be overloaded for the conditions under which it will operate. Plan lifts before
starting them to ensure that they are safe. Take additional precautions and exercise extra
care when operating around power lines.
Some mobile DRUM HANDLERs cannot operate with outriggers in the traveling position.
When used, the outriggers must rest on firm ground, on timbers, or be sufficiently cribbed
to spread the weight of the DRUM HANDLER and the load over a large enough area. This
will prevent the DRUM HANDLER from tipping during use. Hoisting chains and ropes
must always be free of kinks or twists and must never be wrapped around a load. Loads
should be attached to the load hook by slings, fixtures, or other devices that have the
capacity to support the load on the hook. Sharp edges of loads should be padded to prevent
cutting slings. Proper sling angles shall be maintained so that slings are not loaded in
excess of their capacity.
All DRUM HANDLERs must be inspected frequently by persons thoroughly familiar withthe DRUM HANDLER, the methods of inspecting the DRUM HANDLER, and what can
make the DRUM HANDLER unserviceable. DRUM HANDLER activity, the severity of
use, and environmental conditions should determine inspection schedules. Critical parts,
such as DRUM HANDLER operating mechanisms, hooks, air or hydraulic system
components and other load-carrying components, should be inspected daily for any

maladjustment, deterioration, leakage, deformation, or other damage.
PROBLEM DEFINITION :
In the present age of industrialization material handling using modern material handling
equipment has become an absolute necessity.but in some cases the conventional methods of
material handling such as the fork lift cannot be used for example unloading of a drum or barrelfilled with liquid.
Drum handling is necessarily a tedious activity if considered individually by using manual
methods or the DRUM HANDLER, because tilting a drum filled with oil/liquid without spilling is
difficult . This needs a specialized equipment which can do the emptying of the drum easily and
fast without any wastage.
i
SOLUTION:
The universal DRUM HANDLER is an ideal solution to the above problem where in one
can do the following functions:
a) Holding the drumb) Tilting the drumc) Transporting the drumd) Rotating the drum (Sometimes necessary for mixing purpose)This present unit is an prototype model of the actual system only reduced in capacity (drum
weight and size)rest functionality is duplicated. .due to economic considerations.

THE UNIVERSAL DRUM HANDLER comprises of the following parts :

a) Base Frame : The Primary base frame is the base element provided withcastor wheels, The primary base is made of mild steel square tube and mild
steel plate. It supports the entire assembly of the DRUM HANDLER system
b) Vertical motion system: The vertical motion system comprises of the screwand nut , lifter screw held in two ball bearings and nut connected to the
carrier. Rotation of screw is converted to translation of the drum tilter unit
up or down
c) Drum Gripper arrangement :The drum gripper arrangement is in the formof two LH and RH clamp heads , Rh head is fixed andf the Lh clamp head
moves to and fro to achieve the clamping and de-clamping arrangement.
The clamp screw is translated to and fro by rotating the clamp nut using
clamp motor.
Specifications of the motor and gear box are as follows
Motor : 12 Volt DC , 50 watt
Gear box : worm gear box 1:55 ratio
d) Drum tilting / rotation mechanism : This system is used to enable the tiltingor rotation of the drum . this is achieved by means of a spur gear ring
driven by a pinion on the tilting motor. Rotation of the drum can be done
keeping the tilting motor running.
e) Power to the system is given by 12 V DC battery /12 v DC sourcef) Direction control is achieved by using a 2-Pole 2-way (DP/DT) switch.

WORKING
The Working of the UNIVERSAL DRUM HANDLER is best explained using
following procedural steps:
1. DRUM LIFTING / TRASPORTATION:The drum to be lifted is approached by moving the DRUM HANDLER
using wheel castors , the gripper motor is started to bring the gripper
jaws inwards to clamp the barrel.
The rack arrangement is actuated using pinion and handle
arrangement to lift the drum.
The drum is moved to the desired location by moving the DRUM
HANDLER using castor wheels.
2. DRUM TILTING :The drum to emptied is approached by moving the DRUM HANDLER
using the castor wheels. The gripper motor is started to bring the
gripper jaws inwards to clamp the barrel. After the drum is securely
gripped the tilting motor is started to tilt the drum to desired angle to
facilitate the drum poring activity.
3. DRUM ROTATION:The drum to be rotated is approached by moving the DRUM HANDLER
using the castor wheels. The gripper motor is started to bring the
gripper jaws inwards to clamp the barrel. After the drum is securely
gripped the tilting motor is started to rotate the drum to desired no. oftimes.

ADVANTAGES :
1. Conventional lifting is possible.2. Tilt to right hand side possible.3. Tilt to left hand side possible.4. Drum rotation to 360 degrees is possible5. Tilt angle is lockable as self locking worm gear box is used for tilting and
gripping
6. Low cost automation.
APPLICATIONS:
1. Liquid material transport.2. Industrial fluids transport3. Agriculture fluids transport4. Garbage Trucks ..etc.
