Project descriptionThe National Horizons Centre is a state-of-the-art bioscience education, training, research and innovation facility at Teeside University.

Arranged over three levels, the NHC will house academics and business development staff from Teesside University, working in partnership with regional, national and international industry. The building contains a number of Category 2 Laboratories, as well as office space for research students and staff, plus welfare facilities.

This complex project entailed the installation of several specialist services, designed to provide and maintain the exacting environmental conditions required for a facility of this nature. These included the supply of special gases, fume cupboards, microbiological safety cabinets & UPS power systems.

Precise air pressure regimes were required to separate the corridors (positive pressure) from the laboratories (negative pressure) to prevent contamination. These conditions were achieved using VAV dampers on the ventilation systems, to constantly adjust the volume of air required, depending on the use of the fume cupboards or microbiological safety cabinets.

In order to deliver the required objectives, we used BIM Modelling to design the MEP Installation and worked closely with the client’s design team. Thanks to effective collaboration, the project has been a big success and the client is delighted with their new facility.

This is the first time I have worked with Integral but from the outset the two project engineers have been dedicated to getting this job to a completion. They embraced the clients vision for this nationally important facility; nothing was too much trouble to deliver the best job possible. I look forward to working with them on many projects in the future.
