Dear fellow inmates, Yup, its August and all the Augustinian things that go with it. School starts, (just seems so early anymore) lots of fairs, and of course IU football… which should be a promising year. The UClub is gearing up for its annual forays of good times for all. Let 'em roll. Speaking of which a tip of the ole UClub hat to Lu Cregar, Cyril Siewert, Marilyn Brinley, Susan Platter, and with any luck at all, Barb Aspy as these folks are chairing the program events. A special BIG DOF to Kate Kroll and selection committee for bring-ing in Joe & Ruth Miller as our new Co-Vice President's. More new stuff will be coming along, so stay tuned. As you have all probably heard; the CHICKEN held a news conference, where he finally broke his silence, and stated firmly… I crossed the road so the stupid opossum could see that it can be done! August's birth flower is gladiolus, or 'sword lily.' Gladiolus represents remembrance, calm, integrity, and infatuation. With gladiolus, the recipient's heart is being "pierced with love." The other August flower is the poppy. A red poppy signifies pleasure, a white poppy is given for consolation, and a yellow poppy wishes wealth and success. Glads, as they are often called, are native to tropical and South Africa and are any plant of the genus Gladiolus. The plant has sword-shaped leaves with one-sided spikes of funnel-shaped, bright flowers. “Love At First Sight” is the meaning of this flower when offered as a gift.

Peridot is the birthstone for August. It is said to host magical powers and healing properties to protect against nightmares and to bring the wearer power, influence, and a wonderful year. As peridot is a gemstone that forms deep inside the Earth and brought to the surface by volcanoes, in Hawaii, peridot symbolizes the tears of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes. Today, most of the peridot supply comes from Arizona; other sources are China, Myanmar, and Pakistan. This gemstone comes in several color variations ranging from yellow-ish green to brown, but most consumers are attracted to the bright lime greens and olive greens.

WE HAVE A WINNER! CONGRATULATIONS to contest winner Jennifer Hubacher, Director of Public Relations, at Gar-den Villa Health!

It was a hot summer night. Carolyn Anderson, Su-zanne Roberts, Mary Emison and Deb Cordrey, were right there in the thick of it at the Monroe County Airport for the Sec-ond Annual Chamber of Commerce “Trade Show in a Briefcase” event! The show featured numer-ous Bloomington business’s, groups and associations all peddling their goods and working the crowd of over 500. There was a hot air balloon and a BBQ cook-off contest between the areas best smokers, as well as some splendid “adult beverages!”

The University Club booth received over 100 entries in their contest to win a 3-hour rental of the Presidents’ Room. Jennifer Hubacher was the lucky win-ner! These Chamber of Commerce events are a terrific way to get out there and let people know about our wonderful Club.

The University Club is delighted to have the new IMU Director, Hank Walter, as our keynote speaker this year. Hank has deep roots in Bloomington and IU through his family. His late father-in-law, Dick Rubin, was one of the original faculty members at SPEA where he worked for 33 years. His wife, Elizabeth, grew up in Bloomington, and has two degrees from IU. His mother-in-law also received her master’s degree from IU and worked for the IU Foun-dation before taking a job at the Monroe County Public Library. “We’ve been to Bloomington twice a year for a number of years now,” Walter said. “I really feel connected to IU through my family.”

Hank has leadership experience at two Big Ten Universities. He spend 12 years as asso-ciate director for programs at the University of Illinois’ union and has served as chief op-erating officer of the University of Wisconsin’s union since 2005. “The IMU is an icon in the college union profession,” he said. “It is one of those special places that other unions have benchmarked themselves against. It’s got a national and international reputation. It’s an honor to be a part of that.” We think this is a special place too! Thanks Hank!

The 24th Head Baseball Coach, Chris Lemonis, is our honored guest speak-er at the first “Speaker Series Lunch-eon” this season. Chris will be look-ing back at the 2015 season and giv-ing us a sneak peak of what he has in

store for 2016.

Chris expressed what this job means to him. “Believe me, it’s kind of a dream job,” Lemonis said. “Just to have the beautiful stadium and the

beautiful campus, and how they’ve had success. There’s a lot of good things here.” Coaching at IU not only put Lemonis in charge of one of the best teams in the country the past two seasons but also provides his family a home in a town far different than Louisville. Lemonis said the small town, family feel, of Bloomington suits his family better than the urban layout of Louisville. “I don’t know if there’s a better city in the country than Bloomington.” Obviously Coach Lemonis is

really excited to be here! And we’re excited to meet him!

The University Club of Indiana University was formed in 1912 to be a central focus for interchange and understanding among faculty, staff, alumni, their spouses, IU Retirees, and members of the community. That same year, New Mexico became the 47th state; the oversea railroad first arrived in Key West; Tokyo gave 3000 cherry trees to Washington D.C. to symbolize friendship; the Carpathia arrived in New York harbor with 708 survivors from the RMS Titanic; Harriet Quimby became the first woman to fly across the English Channel; Woodrow Wilson became President; and Tarzan the Ape Man first appeared in an Ed-gar Rice Burroughs’ novel. The spirit of those early days lives on through the vitality and energy of our 642 current members. Members provide the ideas and talent that make up the quality and depth of our programs and special events. Whether your reason for being a member is making connections, utilizing the club facilities or the programming, one thing is still the same today as it was 103 years ago… Members make the differ-ence and are the driving force of our continued growth. That makes membership in the University Club a timeless investment for the future. It’s time for our Regular Members (not Life Members) to renew for the 2015—2016 year. Please complete

and mail the form on the next page. Regular Memberships are due NOW PLEASE!. Thank you! (Life and Meadowood Membership renewals will go out later in the summer and will be due by September 15th.)

Membership is Timeless

Call my friend Deb at the Club and renew today!

Ah aaaaaa! It’s not too late - REALLY!

You can still renew your membership and enjoy all the special upcoming events.
