We are pleased to report that building work on the newInformation Commons is starting to make rapidprogress.

This flagship project, which is being supported throughdonations from alumni and friends, will be a fantastic additionto the current study facilities on campus. It will be open 24hours a day, and will give students far greater access to coretexts, computer facilities and individual and group study areas. It will also be fully accessible to users with disabilities, and hasbeen carefully designed so that all materials and surfaces areuser-friendly for visually and aurally-impaired users.

The Information Commons is due to open in early 2007.However, in the meantime, you can keep up to date with theall the latest developments on the project atwww.sheffield.ac.uk/infocommons, which includes livewebcams of the building work.

Before we ran our first campaign inOctober 2003, just six alumni were makingdonations to the University. Two and a halfyears later, more than 2,100 donors havejoined in our fundraising efforts to ensurethat future generations of studentscontinue to benefit from a first-classeducation at the University of Sheffield.

We are particularly grateful to all donors who made gifts toour Centenary Alumni Fund, raising more than £200,000 forstudent scholarships, new study facilities, and AlumniFoundation grants. The Alumni Fund is proof that collectively, your donations really do make a difference to the universityexperience of current and future students, no matter howsmall or large the gift.

Thank you so much for making an investment in the educationand development of young people. With your help, they will, like you, go on to become valued members of Sheffield’sworldwide “family” of alumni, and carry their Sheffieldexperience with them for the rest of their lives.

Sheffield students have always had a wide range of interests andtalents outside of their studies, making the University an excitingand fun place to be.

With an impressive selection of extra-curricular activities and aStudents’ Union which is consistently voted one of the top Students’Unions in the UK, the University of Sheffield has always offeredgreat opportunites for students to explore and develop their non-academic skills and talents. This is a tradition which will beformally recognised and celebrated this year, as the Students’Union celebrates its own Centenary.

Support from alumni and friends like yourselves means that theUniversity can continue to offer grants to help clubs, societies, volunteering and student welfare projects and enable them tothrive. Over the next few pages you can read how your donationsare helping current students to work together and contribute to adynamic, creative student community.

Students take up ‘Lifestyle Challenge’

An Alumni Foundationgrant helped to fundan exciting four-weekcampaign, led by theStudents’ Union, entitled the “LifestyleChallenge”. Thiscampaign challengedsix core studentlifestyle topics and ledmany students to stopsmoking, becomefitter, eat morehealthily, cut down on

drinking, reduce and control stress levels, andlive in a more ethical and environmentally-friendly way.

More than 2,000 Challenge packs were given outto students, containing information on each ofthe six Challenge areas, progress cards to enablestudents to track their progress over the fourweeks, and links to online advice and support.

During the four-weeks of the Challenge, theStudents’ Union also offered a wide selection ofstalls in the main foyer, providing advice on howto stop smoking and how to eat more healthily. The staff and volunteers on these stalls reporteda high amount of interest and positive feedbackfrom students.

“I would like tothank all formerstudents whosedonations made thisimportant campaignpossible, I would alsolike to take thisopportunity to thankall studentparticipants andmentors for theirhard work leadingup to, and during thefour weeks.” ElliottSanderson, thecampaign organiser

Sheffield Volunteering - Annual Sports DaySheffield Volunteering provides opportunities for staff andstudents to volunteer in the local community.

One of the projects which the Alumni Foundation has beendelighted to be able to help with a grant is their annual SportsDay. This event, now in its fifth year, involves over 270 childrenfrom four local schools - Westways Primary, NetherthorpePrimary, Springfield Primary and Porter Croft CE Primary –and provides pupils with opportunities to try hockey, athleticsand basketball in a non-competitive environment.

For the youngsters this event offers a rare chance to learnalongside pupils from other schools and play on professional-standard facilities.

Tuition is provided by professional coaches from SheffieldCity Council. Around 50 student volunteers help to escort the

children to and from school, supervise group activities, serverefreshments and help out with video and photography.

When the project was initially set up, the four schools wereselected to take part on the basis that each had very limitedsports facilities and were located in residential areas whichhad high numbers of student residents and/or experience ofsocial / economic deprivation.

Where there had been instances of rivalry between localschools, teachers also hoped that an annual event would help tofoster better relations between pupils. The event also fostersgood community relations between students and local residents.

For the third successive year, Sheffield Volunteering has beenrecognised by the Higher Education Active Community Fund(HEACF) and the Careers Research and Advisory Centre(CRAC), as a Model of Good Practice.

This February the University’s student Japan Society staged a major national event, supported by the Alumni Foundation, that brought together other universitysocieties from across the UK to celebrate all things Japanese.

The Japan Day, `Breaking the Barriers,’ provided a rare opportunity for students, staff and the local community to experience a unique culture through liveperformances, including Japanese drummers, martial arts and dancing. People were also given the chance to get a taste of Japan with cultural stalls offeringtakoyaki and sushi.

One of the most popular Japanese musicians in the UK, Joji Hirota, performedthroughout the day. Joji worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company as a solopercussionist and co-composer for its production of `Macbeth´, which wasperformed at various venues in the UK, Japan and the USA, and also broadcast as afilm on Channel 4.

The event also featured an interactive talk with Japanese entrepreneur AyumuTakahashi, who shared many of his success stories and experiences of travelling the world.

All profits raised on the day were donated to the Sheffield branch of the `Make aWish Foundation´, as well as the `Japanese NGO´ charity in Japan.

A group of current students were giventhe opportunity of a lifetime toparticipate in the prestigious HarvardWorld Model United Nations conferencein Beijing this year.

The Sheffield delegation, “representing”the nation of Bahrain, joined almost1,400 other students from around theworld to debate today’s global politicalissues in a simulation of the real UnitedNations, and to realize the World MUN’svision of “gaining an understanding ofthe responsibilities and benefits ofglobal citizenry.”

The conference was gruelling and attimes highly intense, as nations andtheir allies formed blocs, and facedopposition and resistance. Ultimately, however, all the Committees on whichBahrain (Sheffield) sat successfullypassed draft resolutions; a fantasticresult.

The team all agreed that World MUN inBeijing was a phenomenal opportunitynot only to network and socialise withother students from all around theworld, but also to pick up transferableskills that will most certainly beinvaluable in their chosen careers.

“World MUN is an amazing, invaluable experience thathopefully Sheffield will continue toparticipate in for many years tocome. All of us would like to say ahuge thank you to all the donorswho made this possible!”

Henrietta Koomson, one of this year’sdelegates.

Will Christophers, President of theJapan Society at the University ofSheffield, said:

"The theme of the day was`Breaking the Barriers´, andwe hope that we encouragedpeople to believe they canachieve anything they set theirminds to, regardless ofcultural or personal barriers."

Students strut the catwalkfor Cancer Research UKAn Alumni Foundation grant recentlyhelped fund publicity and equipmenthire costs for a highly successfulstudent charity fashion show in aid ofCancer Research UK.

More than 70 students took part in thisshowcase event, using their skills asmodels, dancers, back stage

management, front-of-house staff andpublicity. The show combined dancenumbers – featuring performancesfrom the Streetdance and BreakdanceSocieties - with the modelling of a widerange of clothes donated by localretailers. Some numbers included avery effective comedy element, asdemonstrated enthusiastically by theboys in the “Full Monty” and“Baywatch” numbers!

An Alumni Foundation grant has helpedSheffield Links (the University ofSheffield division of St John’s Ambulance)to buy a potentially life-saving piece ofequipment that will be used for manyforthcoming University of Sheffield andSheffield community events.

The automatic external defibrillator(AED) will be taken out on duty bySheffield Links members who havereceived special training and could savevital minutes before an ambulance arrivesshould someone suffer a heart attack.

The defibrillator is also allowing SheffieldLinks to take on more duties around

Sheffield and to represent the University within the wider community. The firstduty the defibrillator was taken on was in the city centre at the recent SheffieldUnited promotion victory parade. There were thousands of fans outside the townhall and was exactly the sort of event Sheffield Links can now cover due to theirnew purchase.

The defibrillator will go out into the community again at events like Fright Nightand After Dark. The defibrillator will also allow for a higher standard of care to beoffered at University sporting events and any other University event that SheffieldLinks are involved in.

Centenary Law campaign

Young legal eagles take on EuropeThanks to the generous support of our law alumni, four brightyoung law students at Sheffield were helped to pit their legalbrains against some of the best in Europe.

Students Jessica Peake, Paavo Kotiaho, Danielle Paton, andGabrielle Wenham (pictured, L-R, with their team coach SorchaMacLeod) beat off fierce competition from the Universities ofCambridge, Durham and Hull to secure their place in the finalsof the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition inApril. The competition is considered to be the most prestigiousinternational moot court competition in Europe.

The finals were held at the International Court of Justice inThe Hague, The Netherlands. Donations raised from ourCentenary Law campaign enabled the four students to covertheir travel costs, and compete against students from morethan twenty other countries.

The competition involved the team taking part in ahypothetical case involving international law. This year thecompetition raised issues of responsibility for torture, nationality and jurisdiction. Teams had to submit extensivewritten arguments (memorials) and then orally defend thembefore a panel of international lawyers acting as judges.

The team eventually finished a very respectable 15th overall, out of 24 countries taking part, and Jessica earned anindividual nomination in the category of “Best Oralist.”

Sorcha MacLeod, lecturer in Law at the University of Sheffieldand the team’s coach, said: "It was a great honour forSheffield to be representing England in such aprestigious law final. Defeating top universities suchas Cambridge in the English national finals was agreat moment for the students. They all worked reallyhard to reach the finals, and they can be very proud ofthis achievement.”

Law campaign scholarshipsThe Law campaign also helped us to create two extraCentenary scholarships for undergraduates. Farhat Bi andChristopher Rafferty are currently in their first year, and weredelighted to be informed that they had been selected toreceive these special awards.

“Doing a dual degree (Law with French) has meantthat I have needed to buy a lot more books andmaterials than for a single degree, so the scholarshipmoney has really helped me to cover these costs,” saysChris. “Also, if I’d needed to get a job I would havefound it extremely difficult to keep up with such ademanding course, so in that respect this scholarshiphas had a great impact. I’d like to thank all donors fortheir generosity and to let them know that it is verymuch appreciated, and to encourage others to donateto such a worthy cause.”

“I’m extremely grateful for this scholarship, as it hashelped me to keep afloat and enjoy my first year atUniversity,” agrees Farhat. “The Alumni Fund is agreat scheme which has helped many students like me,and I look forward to the time when I can do the samefor other new students.”

Medical campaign fundscontinue to nurturestudent research talentDonations from our 2003 anniversarycampaign for medicine are continuingto make an impact through BMedScistudentships, in conjunction withgenerous ongoing support from theHarry Bottom Charitable Trust.

This year, the three talented youngresearchers benefiting from thegenerosity of our medical alumni are(pictured L-R) Jennie Hall, EmilyStedman and Rob Penson.

Jennie is working in General Practiceand Primary care and is looking at “Theimpact of polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS) upon health-related quality oflife: a qualitative analysis.”

“Research has always been of vastinterest to me, and its importance inthe advancement of medical practicesis paramount. PCOS has also alwaysbeen of particular interest as I haveseveral family members and friendswho are affected by the syndrome. Inaddition to the physical effects, I feelassessing and understanding thepsychological, social and emotionaleffects of an illness is essential in theeffective treatment and management ofpatients.

“Without this scholarship, I wouldn’thave been able to realise my ambitionto undertake a BMedSci Researchdegree. I am extremely grateful to thealumni who contributed to support ourscholarships and I sincerely can’t thankyou enough for giving myself, and otherstudents these wonderfulopportunities.”

Rob is working in the Medical CareResearch Unit in School of Health andRelated Research looking at "Visitingthe emergency department: why dopeople attend and are the reasonschanging?"

"Before my training started and duringthe early part of it I was involved in theclerical side of the NHS. This has givenme some insight into the system andhow it does (or doesn't) work, and I'musing my BMedSci to further that

insight by working with the School ofHealth and Related Research. I'minvestigating how people view and usethe emergency care services. I'mpleased to say the University has givenme a scholarship to do this, and I'd liketo take the opportunity to thank you forfunding it. The money you donatemakes a real difference to students andtheir education."

Emily is working in academicAnaesthesia and researching "Usingnovel nociceptin agonists andantagonists to explore the NOP-N/OFQpathway within the microcirculation."

“This drug is an exciting new discoverywith possible clinical applications inpain relief. So far I have found thisproject to be very interesting andenjoyable but a lot of hard work!

“Alongside this project I aim to attend afew conferences, gain some valuable labskills and hopefully get some of my workpublished. Without the grant I havereceived I would not have been able totake advantage of this opportunity. Iwould like to take this opportunity toexpress my gratitude to everyone for thesupport given to me this year which hasallowed me to further my studies in newand exciting ways.”

Scholarshipsupport: investing in thedevelopment ofyoung minds

Thanks to your continuing support, we arehelping a growing number of talented youngpeople to realise their potential. The University ofSheffield has a long and proud tradition ofeducating bright students from disadvantagedareas and backgrounds, stretching right back toits opening in 1905.

With your help, we can also provide them withthe financial support they need to be able toconcentrate on their studies, and achieve theiracademic and personal ambitions.

“The University will bring the highest educationwithin the reach of the child of the working man.”– from a local poster raising funds for theUniversity’s Royal Charter in 1904.

NOREC scholarship forMechanical EngineeringWe are extremely grateful for thecontinuing support of our friends atNOREC Ltd, whose annual scholarship(which this year they have verygenerously increased) is helpingtalented young engineering students toget the most out of their final year.

Sarah Tomlinson, this year’s NORECscholar, tells us more about how thisaward has transformed her final year atuniversity.

Many congratulations on receivingthe NOREC scholarship, Sarah. Whatdifference do you feel it has made toyour studies in your final year?

The biggest difference is that I didn’thave to worry about whether I couldafford essential items for my course, likebooks. It also meant that during thesecond semester of this year I have beenable to quit my job, giving me more timeto study and relax. Having a chance torelax may seem like a strange advantage, but having time to relax has enabled meto perform much better than I wouldotherwise have done.

It has also meant I could use some of themoney I earned from my former part-time job to put towards my summervoluntary work in Ecuador, working withstreet children. Last time I did avolunteering project like this I gained

many skills which helped me with mywork and university life. I have no doubtthat this project will be the same – forinstance, before I go to Ecuador I will belearning Spanish for 4 weeks!

I would like to say a huge thank you toNOREC for this scholarship. I havebenefited immensely from it, far morethan I had expected.

Can you tell us a bit more about yourfinal year project?

It involves looking at the grip on rugbyballs. This is done using a finger frictionrig, which measures the normal andfrictional forces when a finger is runalong each different rugby material. This project has involved makingimprovements to the equipment andvalidating it, then testing the balls in dryconditions and then in moist conditions. The aim is to improve the understandingof the interaction of the human skin withsports materials.

You won an award for yourcoursework, didn’t you?

Yes, I won the Steel Rolling Guild awardat the end of my third year, for mycontribution to the department. I amthe chair of the mechanical engineeringsociety, organise the departmental balland I’m also the Sheffield Universityrepresentative on the IMechE SouthYorkshire Young Members Panel.

You’re just about to graduate – whatare you hoping to move on to next?

I’m hoping to start my PhD in October, within the Sports Engineering department.

You’ve obviously really enjoyed yourcourse – are there any other thingswhich you’ve particularly enjoyedduring your time at Sheffield?

Yes, definitely. I’ve made some reallygreat friends here and had the chance tobe involved in some great experiences aswell as getting a good degree – such asgoing to Swaziland as a teaching assistantwith the student run charity Tenteleni. Ihave continued to help and support thischarity on my return to England.

I have also really enjoyed working withschools, as an ambassador, and being amember of the University Swing Society.

Centenary Alumni Fund creates record number of new scholarships

We are delightedto announce that, thanks to thesuccess of theCentenary AlumniFund, we will beable to help 27students with

Centenary Scholarships starting in the next academic year,in addition to the many students who are receiving ongoingsupport. This is almost four times as many awards as wehave been able to give out in the past, so thank you verymuch for your contribution to this fantastic achievement.

Pictured are some of the students who have received ourregular faculty bursaries this year. Jemma Marsh (1st year,English and History – seated, second from right) says:

“I don’t know what I would have done without the AlumniBursary- it has helped me so much this year. As a result ofreceiving it I have not found it necessary to get a job, andso instead can really focus on my studies and also enjoymy time here at Sheffield to the fullest. It has also meantthat rather than getting work in Easter I could participatein a charity sponsored hitch-hiking trip from Sheffield toRiga to raise money for an orphanage there.”

Alumni bursary student takes a walk onthe wild side

Thanks to an AlumniFund bursary, third-year Zoologystudent VictoriaFeest was able totake a trip of alifetime to furtherher degree.

Victoria (pictured second from right) joined a group of fellowstudents on a field trip to the jungles of Borneo, where theywere studying the diversity and co-existence of theParashorea tree with other tree species. As part of the trip, the group were also able to observe the jungle wildlife at closequarters, including bats, monkeys and orangutangs.

“I had an absolutely amazing time in Borneo – it was by far thebest experience of my university life,” says Victoria. “I made alot of new friends and learned a lot. It would not have beenpossible to do this without the alumni bursary I received, and Iam very grateful to have been given the opportunity for suchan adventure. Thank you so much to all the alumni who madethis possible for me.”

Victoria hopes to enter a career working with animals aftershe graduates this summer. Thanks to your support, herBorneo experience will get her one step closer to this dream.

Legacies to Sheffield University of Sheffield in America

Unexpected hardshipbursaries for the futureof EconomicsSheffield Economics graduateBrian Sellars (Economics BA 1964),who sadly died in November 2005,surprised his old department witha generous gift of £15,000 in hisWill.

Mr Sellars decided that he wouldlike to help local Sheffieldstudents to study economics, byproviding annual hardshipbursaries of £1,000 to deservingcandidates. By making thisbequest Mr Sellars will beremembered in the Economicsdepartment for many years tocome.

Local legacy enhancesmedical teachingMr Walter Hukin, a Sheffielder, lefta very generous legacy of nearly£20,000 in his Will to support theUniversity’s Medical Faculty. Hewanted his gift to be used to“support innovation in teaching”.This bequest has now been usedin the refurbishment andequipping of the new AcademicUnit of Medical Education at 85Wilkinson Street. This house has astrong historical link to theUniversity, as it was once lived inby Mark Firth, the benefactor ofFirth College. Mr Hukin’sgenerosity will ensure that thevery best teaching facilities areavailable for today’s medicalstudents.

The University of Sheffield in America Inc. is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) whichreceives tax-deductible donations on behalf of the University. American alumni havebeen contributing to the Centenary Alumni Fund campaign since it was launched inautumn 2004.

So far, 122 Sheffield alumni living in the States have raised the impressive total of$94,000.

We would like to thank every single person who has helped to make this possible.

The money raised is already being put to good use, 3 new students started theirundergraduate degree courses here in Sheffield this academic year with the help ofa ‘US Alumni Bursary’. They will continue to receive help from the US alumni fundfor the duration of their studies.

1. Amanda Rogers, English Literature - Amanda is a US citizen who transferred toSheffield from De Paul University in Chicago. Her visa limits the number of hoursshe can legally work in the UK, so this bursary will make all the difference to heropportunities to succeed.

2. Asim Din, Law - Asim is in the first year of his demanding LLB course.

3. Elspeth Twiss, Medicine - This bursary was provided by alumna Kathleen Bailey(French and Music 1956) in memory of her husband and fellow Sheffield graduateHarry Bailey (MB ChB 1956). Elspeth has worked extremely hard to help fund herplace at Sheffield Medical School, but is finding it difficult to balance the pressure ofwork against a highly demanding course of study. With this extra help, Elspeth willbe able to make the most of her time.

This September we plan to help more students in the same way, and to providesome capital to help build the Information Commons, our new state of the artlibrary and learning centre for students (see page 3). We look forward to reportingback in the next Donor News to tell you more.

“The grant given to me was agodsend. I was able to save themoney and put it towards myhouse payment for the next year.”Amanda Rogers

"I was so happy to hear I had beensuccessful in receiving fundingthrough the Sheffield AlumniBursary. This bursary will be souseful to me during my years atUniversity. It will allow me to focuson my studies, without a part timejob interfering too much.” Elspeth Twiss

A generous helping hand for Cancer ResearchJames Guildford Dudley left £6,438, “to the University of Sheffield, for the furtheranceof its research work into cancer.” This well-planned gift arrived at just the right timefor Breast Cancer research underway in the Academic Surgical Oncology Unit.

The Unit had just secured some Medical Research Council funding for a new studentshipposition to investigate the role of angiopoietins in the development of new blood vesselsin breast cancer. However the studentship funding did not include sufficient provisionfor equipment and materials for the research. The additional funds from Mr Dudley’sbequest have helped to provide all the materials to enable this research to go ahead.

Keri Bramford-Hale, the research student for this project, says: “Research costs a lotof money. Without this kind of additional support we wouldn’t be able to make suchprogress in understanding diseases like breast cancer. This is what I have alwayswanted to do, and I am extremely grateful that there are generous people who wantto support this kind of work.”

Bequest boosts BiblicalStudiesIn her retirement, Mrs Elizabeth Browntook occasional courses in theUniversity’s Department of BiblicalStudies. As a mature student she startedto take lessons in Hebrew which she verymuch enjoyed. In her Will, she left alegacy of £5,000 to be used to “supportthe study of Hebrew” in the Department.Part of the gift is being used to establish aprize in her memory whilst theremainder is providing additional libraryresources. The books purchased willeach include a commemorative book-plate acknowledging her legacy.

Helping future generationsto follow in your footstepsKathleen Honor Rogers (English LiteratureBA 1934, MA 1935, Diploma in Education1935) recently left a very generous gift of£14,000 to the University’s AlumniFoundation. The Alumni Foundation is acommittee of staff, alumni and students, which meets three times a year todistribute alumni donations to deservingstudents and university projects. Theflexibility afforded by Miss Rogers’ untiedgift will enable the committee to apply thefunds where need is greatest.

During her retirement Miss Rogerspursued her interests in Yorkshire historyand, in particular, the development ofEnglish surnames in the region. MissRogers chose to support the continuationof these interests, by making another giftof £14,000 to the University’s NationalCentre for English Cultural Tradition(www.sheffield.ac.uk/natcect), whichspecialises in researching local andnational culture.

For more information about leaving alegacy to Sheffield, please contact HelenScarlett, Development Manager on tel: 0114222 1074, email: [email protected].

“I speak to lots ofdifferent peopleabout the plans theyare making tosupport Sheffield intheir Will - fromsimple enquiriesabout our charity
