Welcome to Physics Class! •Physics Regular and Honors

ABOUT ME – PROFESSIONALLY

HILTONIAN LAWS (CLASS RULES)

HILTONIAN LAWS (CLASS RULES)

HILTONIAN LAWS (CLASS RULES)

HILTONIAN LAWS (CLASS RULES)

HILTONIAN LAWS (CLASS RULES)

Follow ALL UHS and VCS Rules

TARDIES

• Per UHS Tardy Policy

• 1st tardy: Warning

• 2nd Tardy: Parent contact

• 3rd Tardy: Referral

• You are tardy if you are not in your seat when the bell rings

HALL PASS – NON-EMERGENCY

• Non-emergency passes include rest room, water, locker, etc.

• MAXIMUM of 3 per 9 weeks

• Raise your hand and ask for permission

• Reasonable time limit of 5 minutes

• UHS 10/10 Rule – NO exceptions

SO… WHO ARE YOU?!?

SO… WHO ARE YOU?!?

• Name & then Preferred Name (no funny business)

• Class (Senior, Junior, etc)

• How Do You Think You Learn Best

• Tactile/Kinesthetic

• Auditory

• Visual

• Life After High School - College & Career Aspirations

• Hobbies

• Extracurricular Activities

• One FUN (and clean) Fact About You

BELL RINGER

• In your own words, what is science?

• What is physics? The difference?

• Discuss with your elbow partner AFTER you have formulated your own answer and written it down in a few clear, concise statements.

• We will discuss as a class shortly.

BELL RINGER

• In your own words, what is science?

•What is physics? The difference?

•Science

• the state of knowing : knowledge as distinguished from ignorance or misunderstanding

BELL RINGER

• In your own words, what is science?

•What is physics? The difference?

• Physics

• the branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy and how they interact with each other. Physics includes mechanics, heat, light and other radiation, sound, electricity, magnetism, and the structure of atoms

ROOM TOUR• Where things are located and/or turned in…

• HW

• Tests

• Notebooks

• Graded work

• Pass

• Pencil sharpener

• etc

• My expectations for you

• FULL name and period on EVERYTHING

BELL RINGER

• How would you go about solving a word problem? List the steps on a piece of paper. Work with your elbow partner to hone it down to approx. 6-10 easy to follow (generic) steps. When complete, you should have two lists. Your original and the collaborated one.

SOLVING PHYSICS PROBLEMS

• I’d Guess…

• Its an acronym. Don’t tell your parents that you would guess on your physics tests and homework!

•I-D-G-U-E-S-S

SOLVING PHYSICS PROBLEMS

•I-D-G-U-E-S-S• Identify the physics principal(s) in the

problem

• Kinematics, projectile motion, waves, EM, optics, etc.

SOLVING PHYSICS PROBLEMS

•I-D-G-U-E-S-S• Diagram and/or graph what the problem is

describing

• FBD

• Projectile range

• Weight and friction

SOLVING PHYSICS PROBLEMS

•I-D-G-U-E-S-S• Givens – write down what you are explicitly

provided or inferred

• Velocity, acceleration, mass, initial and final conditions

• Starts from rest means V0 = 0 m/s

• Comes to a stop means Vf = 0 m/s

• Positive direction

SOLVING PHYSICS PROBLEMS

•I-D-G-U-E-S-S• Unknowns – write down what you do not know

or what you might need. Typically what the problem is asking you to solve

• Velocity, acceleration, mass, initial and final conditions

• The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not "Eureka!" ("I found it!") but rather "hmm....that's funny..."-- Isaac Asimov

SOLVING PHYSICS PROBLEMS

•I-D-G-U-E-S-S• Equation(s) – write down what equation(s) you

are sure you will need and possibly the ones are not too sure about (those in the same physics principal area)

• F = ma

• Vf = Vo + at

• U = PE + KE

• ~4 BIG ones per topic

SOLVING PHYSICS PROBLEMS

•I-D-G-U-E-S-S• Substitute / Solve – plug in your givens into

the questions and solve for the unknowns

• This may take multiple substitutions into several equations to completely solve

• Ex – many times you need to solve for t (time) before you can completely solve for what is being asked

SOLVING PHYSICS PROBLEMS

•I-D-G-U-E-S-S• Sanity Check– does your answer make sense?

• Are you in the right ball park under “normal” conditions?

• Does your numerical value & units make sense?

• Your family sedan can travel at 80 mi/h but not 80 m/s (179 mi/h)

• A person could weigh 200 lbs. but probably not 200 kg (441 lbs.)

• Your body operates around 98 0F but not 98 C (208 0F you’d be dead)

• You cant throw a ball with V0 = 3.0 x 108 m/s (that’s the speed of

light)

“SCIENTIFIC” OBSERVATIONS

• Color Cube Activity – Making Observations and Thinking Scientifically

• Do not remove the cover until told

• Table groups only & no single person group

• DO NOT PICK UP THE CUBE!!!! You can spin it only to see the other side

• If you have seen this before please don’t reveal the answer just watch quietly

• Write your facts and observations in your notebook or piece of paper that you will add to your notebook later

• Give me as many facts about the side of the cube that cannot be seen

• Winning group will get candy

• Winning means all the correct info (nothing extra) and in the fastest time

MATH PRE-TEST(PHYSICS IS MATH IN DISGUISE)

• You will need your own paper and pencil

• Don’t stress…………… seriously

• Not counting as a formal grade unless you blow it off

• Do the best you can – should be used to see where you stand mathematically

• Covers mostly algebra, a little trig, and some basic logic

• Do not guess if you do not know

• Do not use a calculator

• DO NOT WRITE ON THE PAPER GIVEN – Write on your own

• (assume this for the rest of the year unless stated otherwise)

• Numbering error – last one on first page should be 14 and there is no 17. 18 picks up again with the correct order

LABORATORY SAFETY

• I know I know… You have hear this info 100 times but its required and absolutely important

• Last page in your syllabus – MUST be signed and on file for you to participate

• Video

BELL RINGER

• What do you think makes a good teacher?

• What's the difference between a good and great teacher?

• I hope I stack up

TEACHING STYLE • Remind (formerly Remind101)

• Text/email reminders

• Parents too…

• I will not be able to see your/parents phone number or email through this service

• Parents too…

• Data rates apply and I’m not responsible

• Make sure you signup for the right class…

• Physics Honors

• Text @phyhon14 to (703) 687-9199

• Text @phyreg14 to (703) 687-9199

BELL RINGER

• Please start the learning style inventory assessment.

• Do NOT write on it. Please answer or jot down on your own paper.

• First section is 24 questions with 3 columns. Scoring at the end.

• Next section is a running total. Add up your total for each section.

• What style are you? Are you more than one? Surprised?

THE EOC• No Trig Required i.e. No Vector Components

• Designed to be taken without calculators

• You will have a formula sheet w/

• All high level formulas (not necessarily the derived ones)

• Constants

• Order of magnitude prefixes

• Conceptually Rigorous to Explain Scientific/Physics Phenomena

• What does conceptually mean in this case?

• First year – don’t know what to really expect

• Passing grade required to pass class? Summative points?

• VCS Curriculum Map

• What's on the EOC

• Excludes Honors Portions

• This does NOT mean we will not take the easy route… (esp for honors)

SYLLABUS

• Required

• Signed lab safety

• Suggested

• Movie parental permission

• Lab donation
