Access Courses

A one year, full-time course designed to enable mature students (19+) who have been out of education to gain the qualifications, academic skills and knowledge necessary to progress onto a university-level programme. Access courses prepare you for the rigours of university-level study and focus on developing skills in research, essay writing and referencing, as well as achieving qualifications in English and maths that most universities require.

Higher National Certificates/Diplomas (HNCs/HNDs/HNs)

Usually studied part-time over two years, a HNC provides the opportunity to select units that meet your career ambitions. You can progress onto the second year of an honours degree or top-up to a HND following successful completion of the HNC. HNCs and HNDs are generally suitable for those already working in a role related to the qualification. HNs are new, two-year qualifications designed to ensure that students develop vital work skills specific to the industry they are studying.

Foundation Degrees

A Level 4 or 5 university-validated qualification usually studied full-time over two years, although part-time foundation degrees are available. This qualification combines academic study with work-based learning, and focuses on the skills and knowledge related to a specific job role or industry. Foundation degrees are the first two years of a full honours degree. You can opt to study an additional ‘top-up’ year to gain a full BA or BSc degree at Chesterfied College or a university.

Higher Apprenticeships

A Higher Apprenticeship is equivalent to a HND, foundation degree or full honours degree (depending on the level studied). They are ideal for those who are already employed and want to progress their current career further. For employers, Higher Apprenticeships provide the option to shape the learning and development of their staff to meet the specific needs of their business in a cost effective but impactful way.

Top-up Degrees

Equivalent to the final year of a BA or BSc (Hons) degree. This qualification is available to students who have completed a relevant HND or foundation degree and wish to progress to a full honours degree. The top-up degrees available at Chesterfield College are all validated by our partner universities.

Professional Qualifications

Professional qualifications are designed to help you develop specialist skills and knowledge in a specific field of work such as management, accountancy, human resources or marketing. These qualifications are suitable for those looking to gain qualifications for a specific career or wishing to develop exisiting skills to a higher level.

YOUR GUIDE TO QUALIFICATIONS STARTING YOUR CAREER

Careers Guidance Team

Our careers and guidance team are here to support you with decisions about your future career path and to help you plan your next steps. The team hold regular workshops for students on career-focused topics such as CV writing, interview techniques, job searching and managing your money. If you’re looking for advice about something more specific you can book one-to-one advice sessions. You will also have the opportunity to attend events throughout the year, including university and employer fairs.

Student Services

All students enrolled on one of our university-level courses have access to our student services team who are always available to help with any extra support you might need whilst studying with us. From bursary information to counselling, or any other issue you might need help with, we’re here to support you.

OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM

At Chesterfield College University Centre we ensure that you have the opportunity throughout the year to get involved with activities outside of your studies. The Xtra team offers a wide range of activities such as sports, volunteering and fundraising, and trips away from college.

All of our higher level courses also have an elected student representative who is responsible for listening to the views of other students and giving feedback to the college. They also have the chance to attend the Student Conference each year.

If you want to have your say on a range of topics that matter to students, you can join the Students’ Union. You can also apply for an NUS card to benefit from a wide range of discounts.

15

A ‘TYPICAL’ STUDENT

There’s no such thing as a ‘typical’ HE student at Chesterfield College. From 18 year olds who have just received their A Level results to adults returning to education later in life, we have a range of courses and flexible study options to suit everyone. When you join the Chesterfield College University Centre you will mix with young people, employed people studying part-time and parents fitting in a degree around family commitments.

Our University Centre isn’t ‘typical’ either. When you join college you will be part of a close-knit group of students, benefittingfrom small class sizes and more dedicated one-to-one time with tutors.

David (43)

HNC Civil Engineering

When I came for my interview I felt so comfortable and the people here really gave me the confidence to pursue my ambitions. Even though it’s been 20 years since I was last at school it feels like my mind is alive again, and I’ve got so much to look forward to in the future.

Sarah (40)

Access to Higher Education

The benefit of studying locally is the flexibility; it allowed me to gain work experience at the same time as my degree. If you’ve got lots of commitments, whether that’s as a parent or working full-time, you have the opportunity to really make the course work around you.

Studying at this level has helped me to climb the career ladder and get ahead at work. Doing the course also encouraged me to be more confident in my ability. Lecturers helped to do this but it was also the camaraderie with other students of all ages, it made me realise that age is no barrier.

YOUR GRADUATION

Your graduation will be one of the most memorable days of your life, and a cause for your family, friends, colleagues and classmates to celebrate with you as you reach the end of your studies.

Each year, Chesterfield College celebrates the achievements of our university-levelstudents with a graduation ceremony. Guests from conferring universities, including Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Derby, attend the graduation to award foundation degrees and full honours degrees to students on courses validated by a partner university.

After the completion of the formal ceremony, we like to celebrate the success of our students together with family, friends and teaching staff. Former Access to HE student

“I came to college three years ago after taking a break from education to raise my children. When I felt that they were a little bit more independent, and I could fit studying back into my life, I started the access course before moving on to do the foundation degree. The fact that the courses were available on my doorstep made it possible for me to get the qualifications I need to build the career I want.

As part of the work-based learning module and work placements in the first and second year of the course, I worked with a mental health social worker and also spent time working in forensic mental health services.

This has opened doors for me and it has given me the opportunity to use my personal experiences to become a family and friends representative with forensic mental health services.

I start my final year of study in September to complete my degree at the University of Derby. I then hope to join the Think Ahead programme which will allow me to get the social work skills I need to work with people with mental health problems.”

Psychology and health studies student, Sarah Shirley, was inspired by personal experience to get the qualifications she needed to follow her dreams of becoming a mental health social worker.

RON MIDDLETON

"The best thing about my job is seeing people empowered by the subject I love. After working for 28 years in the industry, initially as a site engineer, then a project manager for multi-million pound projects,I saw education as a new challenge and a way of giving back to the industry by teaching the next generation.

I see a lot of progression from our students. They progress into a range of fields, from quantity surveying and structural engineering to architecture and design – the courses we offer really do open up the doors to a raft of specialisms and careers.

Students leave us very well prepared for either going on to further studies at university or going into working life – we relate all of the theory to real life, using practical examples of the types of things they will encounter during their careers.

MEET THE TUTOR

We work hard to maintain very good working relationships with industry contacts; they are always asking if we know of any students that might suit a particular role and also invite us to visit them and study up-to-date working practices.

Our residential field trips allow us to set practical examples out in the field, creating similar activities they would face at work. We also take the time to go on some team building activities too, high rope centres for example, to develop confidence and communication skills, which are vital for a successful career when working on site."

Level 4-5Full-time or part-timePTFT

“I started studying business at the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy at college which was great because it was very practical and hands-on which suited my learning style. The course provided me with great industry experience and helped me secure a part-time job at an accountancy firm.

It was during this course that I spoke to my tutor, Martin, about my long term career goal of owning my own business. He suggestedthat I use the Peter Jones course to fast track onto the HND to develop my understanding of business before venturing out on my own.

This route really suited me because I never actually wanted to go to university. I really like the flexibility available at college, I like the fact I can work part-time alongside my qualification and gain the vital industry experience I need for my career. Being close to home is a huge bonus too.

My part-time job in an accountancy firm has really helped me throughout this course. A lot of the assignments have to be related to a real business so it helps that I know how the company operates; this is a lot better than having to spend time researching other businesses.

I have learnt a lot throughout my time at college; I now feel prepared and ready to follow my passion of setting up my own cake shop.”

HND Business student, Lizzie Harrison, found that studying a university-level course at her local college gave her the flexibility to fit study around her working life.

WILL OVERTON

“I began my career as an engineering apprentice and by the time I’d finished my learning journey I ended up with an honours degree in chemical engineering. I was a chemical engineer for eight years before starting my own construction product business. Eight more years down the line I sold the business and found myself thinking, ‘well, what now for me?’ so I decided to go into teaching, and I’m so glad I did.

I gained a masters degree in education and actually began my teaching career in secondary schools teaching physics. I really enjoyed teaching the older Level 3 students so when an opportunity to teach electrical engineering evening courses at college arose I took it, and really enjoyed it. I’ve now progressed to teaching on theHigher Education qualifications with adult learners and I love it. I like teaching things that push me to my limit and these courses certainly do that.

MEET THE TUTOR

At Level 3 we look at working out how things work, for example ‘how does that memory stick or mobile phone work?’ At this level we ask questions like ‘how do I turn this memory stick into a mobile phone?’ It’s often the case in Higher Education that we know what the end result looks like but how do you get to that point?

The process of solving questions in this way is vital whenworking out in industry as engineers are always asked, ‘we have this product but now we want it to do that'."

JAMES THOMSON

"When I was at school there were no computers at all. Then, when on a short course at college, I used one for the first time and it blew me away. The fact I could create something of my own on screen fascinated me and from that point I was hooked.

When audio/video interaction made advances in technology I decided to further my studies with a degree in design and interactive media. I built up an extensive portfolio of work which was mainly web-based, including a lot of interaction and flash projects.

Since then I've worked in a variety of roles across the industry. I've experienced graphics and programming whilst managing a graphics company, and I've also worked in tech support for companies like Dixons and Currys.

I wanted to get into teaching because when I was at school there was little to no careers guidance, so I see this as an opportunity to open my students' eyes as to what careers are possible with the skills they are learning.

MEET THE TUTOR

Essentially we tell them ‘if you want to do this for a living, this is what you have to do’. It’s so rewarding to see students' achieve those goals too. We have former studentsout in California developing games while others are working on networks and systems for big names like Cisco.

It’s surprising how transferable the skills that our students gain are. For instance, learning programming logic can be utilised in a wide range of careers now, not just gaming – the same logic can be used to create apps as well."

MATT PEARSON

"My working life began in the sport and fitness industry before my teaching career developed. My first foray into educating others was as an assessor on a variety of fitness qualifications. I liked that so much I began to take on further roles such as a casual lecturer and became the fitness suite manager at Chesterfield College. Then came an opportunity for me to take my teacher training qualifications which led me to become a full-time lecturer, a role I felt I did really well in.

Things progressed from there really, I’ve taught from Level 1 right up to Higher Education and then I decided to take the opportunity to train fellow educators through teaching/workforce development. I then moved into solely lecturing on the teacher training qualifications so in a way I’ve almost come full circle. It’s great because I know exactly what all of my students are going through.

The Post 14 PGCE we offer opens so many doors for people, whether they are current practitioners looking to progress their careers or someone looking for a complete career change. It’s often the case that students have skills in a particular industry, we’re simply giving them the theories, strategies and qualifications to be able to deliver that knowledge in a training environment.

MEET THE TUTOR

Student feedback is really positive. It’s a demanding qualification but the satisfaction and career opportunities make it all worthwhile. It’s an applied qualification so whilst attending evening classes on a part-time basis, students undertake a number of hours each year in a teaching environment in order to build up vitally important experience and a portfolio of teaching that proves to be hugely beneficial when progressing their career.

We’ve seen a majority of students either gain full-time employment in teaching/training or progress in their current teaching career. We’ve also seen a number of students fall back in love with learning and take their studies further, progressing onto masters degrees."

Scarlett Brocksopp is a work-based tutor with Learning Unlimited. She tells us why she decided to study for a Certificate in Education with Chesterfield College and the benefits of gaining a teaching qualification.

Certificate in Education student

Meet Scarlett

“I wanted to develop my teaching abilities because my job has changed from simply assessing the progress of apprentices to delivering more one-to-one teaching. I also knew that the qualification would give me more options to develop my career in the future.

Training to teach at the same time as working has been the best way to get the qualification for me. It might be a less traditional way into teaching but I really believe that using my day- to-day experiences, as well as learning from other people on the course and the tutors, has been really beneficial. The added bonus is that you avoid the debt of taking time out to study full-time.

Since I started the course I’ve been able to teach in a variety of settings with groups of different sizes. I am already incorporating technology into my sessions much more which is having a really positive impact with the learners I work with.

I am inspired by the sessions my tutors run for us, they are really engaging and effective. I come away from them thinking ‘I want my teaching to be like that’.

I haven’t studied at university level before so getting used to the academic writing and referencing was a bit of a challenge at first, but support from tutors and staff at the university centre has been amazing and now it’s become second nature.”

Part-timePT Level 5

James Taylor – Quality & Inspection Engineer and Higher Apprentice at Accrofab. Ed Ashworth – Operations Director at Accrofab.

In Conversation

Meet James and Ed

Ed: You’ve achieved a lot since you have been with us – why were you so keen to choose an apprenticeship route after school?

James: Yes I am really pleased with how things have worked out with my apprenticeship. After my A Levels I started working at Accrofab as a higher level apprentice, studying for my Level 3 NVQ Fabrication and Welding at the same time as studying for my HNC. I am now doing an HND and I will be topping that up to a degree, later this year.

Choosing an apprenticeship has given me the experience and the qualifications I need. I have been able to improve my practical abilities as well as learn thetheory behind it because of the things I am getting involved in on a day-to-day basis. I feel like I already have lots of responsibility in my role, which is great.

Ed: I think that is because you are working in a full capacity as part of the business. This isn’t just a training role. We really value what apprentices bring to the business and although we have had apprentices for the past four or five years, as our first higher level apprentice you have opened our eyes to thepotential for developing young people into management roles through apprenticeships.

James: Management roles are definitely where I see myself at the end of my studies. I don’t think I would be able to get there as quickly without the work experience side of my apprenticeship. My confidence has grown massively since I started. There are hidden benefits to an apprenticeship; I have met all kindsof people and learnt from a variety of situations that I know will be really worthwhile as I develop my career. I feel like the company has really invested in me as well.

Ed: We’ve supported you all the way and we will continue to do that because you are a valuable asset.

Apprentices are really valuable because they learn skills specific to our business. If we took on a graduate they might have the theoretical knowledge but without the work experience they still need training to apply those skills.

James: That is why higher level apprenticeships are such a good idea. You can get the same qualifications as studying full-time at university with the added benefit of the hands on experience that employers need.
