EXAMINATION

INTRODUCTION

What is Examination?

In any academic context, an examination may be defined simply as the process of

testing knowledge or skill. The process could be single act or an entire exercise

whose outcome enables the examined to place the examinee on fail or pass status,

for eventual certification. An examination of this nature is clearly distinct from

those employed by agents of repression (ideologically speaking) or law

enforcement (ideologically speaking) to mean the act of moral interrogation of a

suspect, detainees or criminal, etc. the difference here lies in the motive of the

examiner. While the former is designed to access the amount of knowledge, skills

or competence of the examinee, the latter is designed to determine guilt or

innocence with a view of enforcement. In general, examination in the academic

setting may take the form of continuous assessment, orals (i.e. interviews), written

examination and practicals. An oral examination may be simply an interview or the

defense of a project presentation.

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT (C.A)

A continuous assessment is a periodic assessment given to students during the

course of the semester. The purpose is to keep students on their toes as well as

ensure that each segment of the course content has been properly taught. It may

take form of essays, term paper, assignment, attendance, written test, etc. The

continuous assessment contributes 40% of the total mark for each course.

ANALYSIS OF GRADES AND GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)

A student’s percentage score in any particular course is normally expressed by

letter grade which also has corresponding grade point as follows;

Table 1

Score (%) Grades Grade point

Page 18: University of Business Technology (UBUT) HANDBOOK

70-100 A 5

60-69 B 4

50-59 C 3

45-49 D 2

40-44 E 1

0-39 F 0

At the end of the programme students’ results are prepared reflecting total

units registered in the programme, total units passed in the programme, GPA,

course failed and degree classification according to the following scheme;

CGPA CLASS OF DEGREE

4.50-5.00 First class

3.50-4.49 Second Class Upper

2.40-3.49 Second Class Lower

1.50-2.39 Third Class

1.00-1.49 Pass

Less than 1.00 Fail

CALCULATION OF GPA AND CGPA

The GPA (Grade Point Average) is the summary of a semester result. It is

determined by the following procedures;

a. Determine your grade

and your grade point base on your score; (check table 1)

b. Determine the total

units.

c. Determine the total

grade point by finding the sum of the product of the course unit and the

grade point each course;

d. Determine the GPA by

dividing the total grade point by the total units(i.e divide step c by b)

Page 19: University of Business Technology (UBUT) HANDBOOK

e. Interprete your GPA

base on table 2.

For example, consider a student who takes seven courses in a semester with the

following details

Courses Units Marks

SSC 102 3 67

GST 102 3 46

What would be the GPA of the student?

Following the highlighted procedures, we have the table below;

The CGPA (cumulative Grade Point Average) is the summary of students’ results

at the end of session/ programme.

For example, if the student has the following results over four session

Year Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4

semester 1st 2nd 1st 2nd 1st 2nd 1st 2nd

GPA 2.67 3.42 3.62 3.56 4.23 4.24 3.38 4.04

What would be the CGPA of the student at the end of his academic

programme ?

This can be determined by find the weighted grade point average

Interpretation/Remark- second class upper credit.

NOTE.

in any course examination

ii. There is no repeat in

the course system. Therefore a student cannot re-register for a course

already passed.
