4-H Members Plant 1,000 Oak Trees in Parkfield: There were 60 volunteers who helped plant 1,000 Valley Oak Tree saplings on the Varian Ranch, Saturday, February 2nd. Mr. Jack Varian was pleased to have so many volunteers come out and help. We transplanted six inch seed-ling trees from pots, and covered the root ball with gopher guards to protect it from rodents. Black nylon tarps with holes protected the trees from non-native grasses to help them grow. Mr. Varian will have a drip irrigation system put in place to help the trees grow faster. Mr. Varian said the pur-pose of this project was to replenish Parkfield with its native trees. Cerro Alto 4-H members who brought shovels and dug many holes were: Ashley Bentley, Susan Bentley, Calvin Levisay, Savannah Levisay, Susan Levisay and our foreign exchange student from China, Sam. Other 4-H clubs who helped were Chaparral, Estrella, Heritage Ranch, Independence Ranch, Ranchita Canyon, Pozo, and Santa Margarita. It felt good helping our planet repopulate our native trees. Reported by: Calvin Levisay, Cerro Alto 4-H Club Jr. Leader.

8 MARCH 2008

The Secret to Growing Giant Pumpkins is:

Giant pumpkin growers know “the secret.” The only way to grow really big pumpkins is to start with really good seeds. That’s what last year’s winner of the Great Pump-kin contest, the Evans family, did by specially selecting seeds from known giants to produce over 1,000 pounds of pumpkins for the contest.

So how do you get your hands on a few of these price-less seeds? San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau will be hosting a Giant Pumpkin Seed Trading and Growing Workshop at the Farm Bureau confer-ence room on March 26th from 10 a.m. – Noon. This meeting and exchange will be an excellent opportu-nity for giant pumpkin enthusiasts to come meet and learn the secrets of growing giant pumpkins from the growers themselves.

Two new giant pumpkin records were set in 2007. The California record was broken with a 1,535 pound pump-kin weighed-in at the Elk Grove weigh-off, and the world record was broken by a 1,689 pound pumpkin grown in Rhode Island.

Last year, the San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau, with the support of our sponsors Coast National Bank, Farm Supply and Kellogg Garden Products awarded $2,500 in cash and prizes to winners of the second annual SLO Co. Great Pumpkin contest. Including $250 to the heaviest pumpkin grown by a 4-H club member. The third annual Pumpkin contest will be no different. You can expect heavier pumpkins and bigger prizes. Who knows maybe one of the San Luis Obispo County growers will break the California record. Go to www.slofarmbureau.org/Events/Great-Pumpkin.htm for more information.

The Rolling Hills 4-H Club is off and running. We have started a Gardening Group, a Poultry Group, Outdoor Adventures, Leadership Development, Swine Group and are soon to have a Sewing and Rabbit Group.

This fall the gardening group picked apples at Creekside Farms and made cold pressed cider. The outdoor adventures group toured the Guadalupe Cultural Arts and Education Center and hiked the dunes. We also hiked Madonna Mountain and enjoyed the beauti-ful view. The poultry group is busy getting their pens built and plan to buy and incubate chickens for this year’s Mid-State Fair.

The Rolling Hills 4-H Club Christmas party was held at the McPhee’s Bowling Lanes and the club donated to Toys for Tots. All in all it was a good start for 2007. We have 20 members and a great group of adult leaders. Anyone interested in joining should come to the general meetings that are held on the third Tuesdays of the month at the Church of the Nazarene, Room 20, Johnson and Southwood Drive in the city of San Luis Obispo. Children ages 8-18 are welcome. Submitted by: Mary Mitchell-Leitcher, Community Club Leader

Heritage Ranch 4-H Horse Group Goes to the Equine Affaire in Pomona

This month the Heritage Ranch 4-H Horse group has done some exciting things. First we went to the Equine Affaire in Pomona for 2 days. Then we went to this big tack store called the Broken Horn.

At the Equine Affaire we saw a lot of cool horse breeds and other stuff. We also watched the Extreme Cowboy Race. That was really fun and exciting.

The next day we went to Broken Horn, which is a two story tack store. We had a ton of fun there and bought some stuff for our own horses.

Thanks for reading this month’s Heritage Ranch 4-H Horse group report. Happy trails, Ali Einolander
