3 April 2010 Highlights

Our Members Say it Best!

Spring Concert Peter Schafhalter, San Bruno 4-H Club

Last year the San Bruno 4-H club did a Spring concert at Greenhills Marymount Greenhills Retirement Center as a community service. Please check our website: http://sb4h.sanbrunocal.com/events509.html. It was so success-ful that we would like to repeat it again and open participation for every 4-Her in the county. Do you like to pay your instrument, sing, dance, do magic or recite in front of an audience? If yes, please contact us under [email protected]. We are planning to do the concert around the first week-end in May. Last year we had a planning meeting and 2 rehearsals. I hope a lot of people will join us in this fun event.

4-H Million Trees Update submitted by Tom Webber, 4HMT project leader

The 4-H Million Trees Project is ready for Earth Day 2010. For the second year, 4HMT is one of the Earth Day projects recommended by the U.S. Department of

Agriculture, the governmental home of 4-H. This really helps publicize the project nationwide to 4-H clubs and units (such as 4-H Afterschool and Military 4-H). Since a goal of 4HMT is to encourage all 6 million 4-H youth to plant trees to slow global climate change, it is very important to get out the word that all 4-Hers are invited to become project participants.

2010 is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, this year all clubs are encouraged to plant at least 40 trees this April. San Mateo County 4-Hers in the 4-H Million Trees Project will meet at Elkus Ranch on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 10 am to 12 noon, to plant some redwood trees. This project is sponsored by Youth Service Amer-ica’s “Get UR Good On” program, and will take place on Global Youth Service Day. All 4-Hers are invited, so please contact us now at [email protected] if you would like to join us for this event!

Every day something good happens in the 4-H Million Trees Project. We recently learned that 4HMT was one of eight U.S. youth projects selected for SeaWorld’s Environmental Excellence Awards (http://www.seaworld.org/conservation-matters/eea/). The $10,000 prize will help 4HMT to support many 4-H tree planting projects. In addition, SeaWorld/Busch Gardens will fly three 4-Hers in-volved in the project to Tampa, Florida for the Earth Day 2010 ceremony!

So far, over 27,000 4-H youth in 44 states and provinces have planted 102,000 trees. Please make plans now to get some trees in the ground to help slow global climate change!

Favorite Foods Day 2010 submitted by Dan Hogan, Belmont 4-H Club Favorite Foods Day 2010 was really fun and participation was terrific. The “just for fun” decorated cake contest saw 9 terrific entries! The winners were: 1st place to Kate Lyn and Sarah Sutherland of Canada

Club for their mouse cheesecake 2nd place to Mallory Moore of Pacifica Club for her

Yellow Farm Cake 3rd place to Leanna Morford for her Confetti Cake

with party blowers. All the cakes were beautiful. Thanks to everyone for participating in this contest! For the official “Favorite Foods” event, 26 entries were judged. Everything tasted great, all the presenters did a fabulous job, and looked very professional! Medalists were: Theresa Anselmo, Burlingame/San Mateo Club, “Aunt

Grace’s Jello Delight” Amy Sherrard, Canada Club, “Baklava” Amy Sherrard, Canada Club, “Red Velvet Cupcakes” Kate Lyn Sutherland, San Carlos/Eaton Hills Club,

“Homemade Four Cheese Ravioli”

Congratulations to all the entrants on your fine cooking and your bravery in entering the event and going through with it all the way through the presentation. We had zero “no-shows,” which is spectacular. The Favorite Foods Day committee (youth and adult) worked very hard to put on this event: Committee chairs Dan Hogan and Linda Gilbraith; youth chairs Robin Hogan and Leilani Hanaike, and committee members Justin Olague, Alyssa, Hannah, and Michele Higdon, and many people who participated the day of the event and in promoting the event ahead of time to the clubs. We had a ton of great activities, including a slate of science activities from SET and an all-day workshop on cookie decorating let by the San Carlos/Eaton Hills Fancy Cookies project.

Finally, thanks to all our judges, without whom the day could not have happened. If you want to have another great FFD in 2011, start thinking of creative ideas now and be ready to join the committee next year!

Make a Pop Tab Bracelet using this tutorial (looks complicated but is very easy once you understand the weave) http://diyfashion.about.com/od/diyjewelrymaking/ss/Pop_Soda_Tab_Bracelet.htm I did notice when I tried to make this bracelet that using soft ribbon will keep this bracelet pliable. I used leather strips and it was stiffer, it was still pretty cool but probably would be a better belt. (Wendy Rotchstein)

April is the Month of the Military Child Would your club like to show support for your local military youth? April is the Month of the Military Child and Operation: Military Kids would like to challenge 4-H clubs to draw, color, decorate poster boards or create computer generated posters that have a message that "speaks out for military kids" in the local community. The theme of the posters can vary greatly and may include information about the number of military children from your local community, the personal sacrifices that they make and opportunities available to assist or support them. The posters could then be displayed throughout your community, at libraries, schools, businesses, etc. during April, Month of the Military Child. OMK has funding available to help your club purchase supplies for this poster project. For more information contact Sylena Wise at 530-752-8585 or email [email protected].

Service Project Ideas

Are you looking for a service project? Check out http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/ and click on the links to the Million Pillowcase Project. The project lasts through December 2010. The basic pattern is the easiest and is suitable for beginning sewers. Look at the link for a store near you that is accepting the pillowcases. They are donated to the homeless, foster children, cancer patients and others so they can be designed for boys, girls, and adults. In Tuolumne County, 4-H leaders donated leftover fabric and members sewed the pillowcases at their "Everything but Animals" Field Day.

Earth Facts for Earth Day - April 22, 2010

Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to watch a TV for three hours - it's equivalent to half a gallon of gaso-line. Earth Day is a relatively new holiday and was first celebrated on April 22 in 1970. More than 20 million Americans participated in this first Earth Day celebration Earth Day was founded by a senator of Wisconsin and the day is credited for creating the environmentalism movement. April 22 is the first official day of Spring in the Northern hemisphere and of Fall in the Southern hemisphere and was chosen to be Earth Day for this reason. Never underestimate the importance of recycling: if every newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year. Unfortunately only 27% of all American newspapers are recycled. More than 20,000,000 Hershey's Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of tinfoil. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it. Only 11% of the earth's surface is used to grow food. The world's first national park was started in 1872 at Yellowstone National Park in the US. The first proclamation of Earth Day was made by the mayor of San Francisco in 1970. A highlight of the annual Earth Day ceremony at the United Nations is the ringing of the Peace Bell that was given to the UN by Japan. It is made from coins given by school children to further peace on our planet.

Happy Earth Day!

Quote of the Month

People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out,

but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed

only if there is a light from within.
