County Record Book Judging

Record books are due to the County Office on September 14, 2009.

In 2008, County 4-H Council changed the program year from July 1 - June 30 to September 1 – August 31.

4-H teaches many valuable life skills and record keeping is very important for your future career and to be able to see your 4-H growth over the years. By participating in the County Record Book Judging you will receive a pin for your hat, comments on your record keeping abilities and you may also be able to apply for State 4-H Record Book Judging. Keeping a good record book now can have a lot of benefits to you later. San Mateo County offers numerous scholarship opportunities and you need your record book to apply for advanced stars.

The application and leader evaluation are available at http://cesanmateo.ucdavis.edu/4%2DH%5FProgram/4-H_Forms.htm and the record books are available on the State 4-H website: http://www.ca4h.org/4hresource/forms/index.asp

Record Book Training is offered by Record Book Key Resource Leader, Valerie Pimentel. Please email or call Valerie at [email protected], 650-726-5853, or Mary at [email protected], 650-726-9059 x 106, if your club would like to hold a training or to answer any questions.

On June 27th, the Junior Fair Board hosted a “Find A Buyer” clinic for livestock exhibitors. Anna and Katrina shared buyer letters they have used successfully and participants used a letter template to practice writ-ing to buyers. We also developed a presentation to use at service clubs (Rotary, Lions, Elks) so that livestock exhibitors can visit these clubs and share information about the auction and their projects. If anyone is interested in a copy of the presentation, please send me an email and I will send it to you. Sue Garcia, [email protected].

hard last weekend decorating a float for the Redwood City 4th of July Parade. To reflect the 75th anniversary of the fair, the centerpiece of the float is a multi-level birthday cake. The float decorations this year are made out recycled materials – plastic bottles were refashioned into flow-ers and spray painted. Members of Junior Fair Board will be riding on the float and we hope you will cheer them along.

Join Santa Clara County 4-H in a Great Cause!

Take Flight for Kids at San Jose Reid Hillview Airport Saturday August 8, 2009.

Take Flight is a huge flying festival at Northern California airports. We recruit about 75 volunteer pilots of small airplanes and helicopters, then provide free flights for about 750 young people with disabilities, at risk youth, homeless kids, foster kids, you name it. We take the young people flying for 20 minute flights, in this case over Sili-con Valley. Most of the kids get to fly the plane to experience the empowerment of being in absolute control of complex aircraft. About 200 nonprofit agencies are expected to join us and network with the crowds. We expect up to 4000 people to join us at Reid Hillview Airport on August 8th, making this the biggest aviation-based STEM science/technology/engineering/math festival in Silicon Valley.

Everything is FREE to all attendees, all volunteers, all booth hosts! Free admission, free parking, free BBQ at noon, free airplane rides to kids 8-17 years old (must be pre-registered online), free live entertainment, petting zoos, hot air balloon rides, helicopters, radio controlled aircraft, model rockets, science experiments, games, rides, fun, fun, FUN!

To reserve a (free) booth in this hottest gig in town, all you have to do is RSVP online. We'll take care of the rest: http://www.takeflightforkids.com/vendor.htm .For more info, check the website: http://www.takeflightforkids.com

Santa Clara County 4-H has been a part of this event and they are welcoming San Mateo County 4-H youth and adults to help out with a booth as well. Please call or email Mary Meyer if you are interested in being a part of "Take Flight for Kids"650-726-9059 ext. 106 [email protected]

Enter the Funky Nests Challenge! You find them in hanging flower baskets…an old boot…a garage shelf…or under a

bridge…birds build nests in the strangest places! That’s the theme for the newest environ-

mental challenge from our Celebrate Urban Birds project: Funky Nests in Funky Places! As

you may know, Celebrate Urban Birds is a free, year-round citizen-science project from the

Cornell Lab of Ornithology, focused on birds in neighborhood settings.

For the Funky Nests in Funky Places challenge, we want you to take photos, do a painting, write a story, or shoot a

video showing a bird’s nest built in some out-of-the-way or out-of-this-world place. When observing nests please be

sure to avoid touching them or disturbing the birds.

This one’s going to be fun, I think. We usually receive hundreds of entries for each of our challenges, and I can’t wait

to see what your sent us this time and where birds have chosen to build their funky nests! I'm also attaching a PDF flier

about the challenge you can print for yourself or pass along to others who might want to participate.

We have some great prizes, includig a Leica C-LUX 3 compact camera, bird feeders, shrubs for planting, and more.

The first 50 entrants will receive a copy of the "Doves and Pigeons" poster by Julie Zickefoose and we'll post selected

images and videos on the Celebrate Urban Birds website.

Here's how to enter: 1. Email your entry to [email protected]. Links are acceptable for videos.

2. Write “Funky Nests” in the subject line. 3. Include your name and mailing address. 4. Explain why you submitted your entry--what's the story behind it?

5. One entry per person, please.

Deadline for entries is July 31, 2009. Visit the Celebrate Urban Birds website for more information and to read the

terms of agreement regarding all entries. Thanks for taking the challenge!

Sincerely, Karen Purcell, Project Leader (607) 254-2455 [email protected]

Are you interesting in establishing a pen pal rela-tionship with a student in Kenya? California 4-H has made a contact with a school administrator who oversees a Catholic school in Kenya and will estab-lish a pen pal program so that students 13 to 17-years-old can communicate with one another and share information about their lives. Please contact Pat English,[email protected] or 530-754-8520 if you are interested in communi-cating with a Kenyan youth.

Greetings for Military Kids Is your club looking for a fun service project to help military children? Well look no more! Operation Military Kids (OMK) supports California's military youth by providing them with Hero Packs. One of the items we include in each pack is a letter of support and encouragement written by another California youth. If your club would like to write letters to military kids or learn more about how your club can get involved in the OMK hero pack project, please

contact Sylena Wise at the CA 4-H State Office, [email protected].

Volunteer Opportunities:

Army Reserves need 4-H's help with some upcoming Yellow Ribbon Reinte-gration Program (YRRP) Events. The 63rd RSC/RRC is preparing for the upcoming YRRP events that focus on preparing, sustaining, and reintegrating our Soldiers and Families throughout their deployment cycles. If you would like to showcase your 4-H club or volunteer your time by providing fun youth activities for military kids during the event please contact Sylena Wise at 530-752-8585 or [email protected]. Help Staff 4-H Booth at California State Fair

Once again The California 4-H Foundation is recruiting 4-H members and leaders to help staff the 4-H booth at the California State Fair (August 21 - September 7). This is a great opportunity for 4-H members and volunteers to share with the public their 4-H experiences, as well as, the wide range of pro-jects and leadership opportunities that are available to youth through participa-tion in the California 4-H Youth Development Program. Small 4-H projects are welcome to accompany you (robots, rabbits, arts/crafts, service dogs, etc.) to give the public a "feel" for what types of projects are available. Examples of service projects also make for good stories to share with the public. Please feel free to bring photo albums or record books with you to show anyone who may be interested in learning even more about your 4-H project. Parking passes and fair admission tickets will be provided to 4-H members and adults who sign up for a 2-hour shift. A maximum of 4 youth and 2 adults per shift will be allowed. Further, each shift must have an adult or older teen in the booth at all times. To sign-up, please visit http://www.ca4h.org/wrp/statefair/.

Are you planning a service-learning project for next year?

Each year the California State 4-H Office provides funds to members and volunteer leaders for service-learning projects through the California 4-H Ser-vice Learning RFP. Groups can request up to $5,000 to fund activities that address significant environmental, economic and/or social issues af-fecting California's youth, families, and communi-ties. The Service Learning RFP application and in-formation is available on the web at: http://www.ca4h.org/citizenship/funding/index.asp. Ex-amples of past projects are also listed. The applica-tion is due September 15, 2009.

4-H club support funding

4-H club support funding is available through the Bob and Pat Dean Memorial Legacy Fund for Cali-fornia 4-H members or volunteers. Funding is in-tended for activities that meet the following criteria: 1) enable youth to develop citizenship, leadership, or life skills; 2) support the development of new and innovative 4-H projects benefiting 4-H members; 3)increase public awareness of the 4-H Youth Devel-opment Program; 4)expand the reach of the 4-H Youth Development Program (new youth, new au-diences); provide continuing benefit to the appli-cant's local 4-H Club or project. YOUTH LIVESTOCK & SMALL ANIMAL DEPARTMENT

THE SAN MATEO FAIR IS PERMANENTLY MOVING TO JUNE IN 2010!

JUNE 12-20, 2010

Dear Livestock Exhibitor, Now that Fair dates are no longer tied to the San Mateo County

Fair horseracing meet, Fair Management and the Board of

Directors have met and the Board authorized moving Fair dates

to June in 2010.

We believe that by moving the Fair dates earlier in the summer it

will allow us to expand our partnerships with San Mateo County

schools and businesses that are otherwise unavailable late in the

summer.

Many Fairs in the industry are currently discussing date moves.

We have also faced challenges in obtaining some vendors during

the Fair due to overlaps with other Fairs. Moving the Fair to

June opens many opportunities as we look forward to celebrating

our county’s excellence for many years to come.

We realize that moving dates significantly impacts our Exhibitors

and when they must purchase animals. So we wanted you to have

this information first!

This schedule provides key dates in 2010. If you have any

questions, please contact our staff at 650-574-3247.

We look forward to celebrating 75 years of the San Mateo County

Fair this year, and many more to come. Department Code: YL Entry Fees: Large Animals $7.00 per animal Small Animals $4.00 per animal Bedding Fees: Cattle $100.00 per animal Hogs, Sheep & Goats $30.00 per animal Turkeys & Chickens $10.00 per pen Rabbits $5.00 per pen
